Possible answer:
A: The first painting is interesting because it shows a real-life situation and there is a lot
of detail showing the women and the fish. The women also seem tired. B: I agree. Perhaps
this is something that they do every day—it is not surprising or exciting. Therefore, the
painter decided to paint this scene using colours that are dark and depressing. A: Yes, you’re
right. When I look at the second painting, I feel relaxed. I can imagine the two birds singing
sweetly in the tree. B: That’s true. Even though the colours in the second painting are similar
to those in the first one, the natural scene and the landscape in the background are
definitely more pleasing.
4. Have students write several sentences about what kind of paintings they like best and
explain the reasons, using verb-ing and verb-ed forms.
I like the Impressionist works best. Many realistic works are more like photos rather than
paintings to me. The Impressionist works provide viewers with a lot of imaginative space to
interact with the works, leaving us wandering around the farmlands, ponds and plants.
Seeing this always makes me excited.
5. Have students finish Part C in workbook
1) It seems that he is not very pleased to see us.
2) The research proved more difficult than expected, but the success of the experiment
was encouraging.
3) Jack sat on the couch, looking completely relaxed.
4) Though living far away from each other, my friend and I stay connected through the
Internet.
5) The teacher’s love for his students was very moving.
6) The journey to the top of the mountain was really challenging.
