(1) What is Vincent van Gogh’s painting style like?
Vincent van Gogh employed thick, unmixed paint, which resulted in vivid colours, similar
to those in the Impressionist paintings. However, his works had strong lines, as opposed to
the softer edges of Impressionism. He was known as a Post-Impressionist.

Sentences showing comparison: Although the paintings had very different settings, it was
their similarities that stayed with me long after I left the Musée d’Orsay—similarities which
can be seen throughout the Impressionists’ paintings. Everyday subject matter was the main
focus of their works, as opposed to the history paintings that had traditionally dominated
European art. They employed free brushwork and used colours to show the effect of light on
things, creating paintings that were far less realistic than the works that came before.
Possible answer: Both the Louvre Museum and the Musée d’Orsay are located in Paris. The
Louvre houses more than 7,500 paintings ranging from the 13th century to 1848. The
Musée d’Orsay is different from the Louvre in that it is mainly devoted to French art
between 1848 and 1914.
4. Have students answer the first question of A3 on page 32.
I think the painting in the middle is most likely an Impressionist painting because it is
probably a normal everyday scene for the painter. The boat and its surrounding scene are
just an impression of what the painter saw so they are not painted in clear detail— the soft
edges of the boats, factory chimneys, sea and sky seem to mix together. This tells me that
the painter used the Impressionist free brushwork technique. The painter also used light
and vivid colours to express his or her feelings.
5. Have students find more information about the painting in the middle in the first question of A3.
This is Claude Monet’s masterpiece, Impression, Sunrise. This work was painted from a hotel
window at Le Havre in 1872. It was one of the nine works that he showed at an exhibition in
1874. Of all those displayed there, this was probably the most famous picture because it
gave rise to the name of the movement.
