Jo is fifteen and lives in Parkville. When Jo’s grandparents first came to
Parkville, it was a quiet village. They had a small house, close to fields and hills.
Parkville was near Arnwick, a city with a population of 10 million. People from
Parkville moved to Arnwick to find jobs. However, it was expensive to live in the
city centre, so the government built flats outside the centre. Soon, Parkville became
part of Arnwick, and the population of Arnwick became even larger. It is very
crowded, and rubbish is also a problem.

The human population on the earth grows larger each year. As a result, more
and more food needs to be produced in order to feed everyone. Because of climate(气
候) change, this task is becoming even more difficult.
In the past, when farmers tried to grow more food, they would use methods
that weren’t always healthy for the environment.

Ⅹ
To solve this problem, some scientists carried out a research project. They spent
several years talking to farmers. They wanted to see what problems farmers were
having and how these problems could be solved. This led to the creation of special
robots. These robots move around on farms and collect much information about
plants. They can take pictures of plants and check each plant’s growth.
In the past, though farmers did have information about the environment and the
weather, they didn’t have the time or ability to check each plant. Now, with these
robots, they can.

By collecting more information about plants, scientists believe that computers
can help farmers know how their plants will grow. For example, if robots can find
which plants are ill, farmers can quickly take them away before they are able to hurt
other plants. The information will also allow farmers to only fertilize and water the
plants in need. And then they can be much stronger and healthier. So studying each
plant could end up saving time and money.

(2023·福建中考)In the past nine years, Li Jin, who was born in Guangxi
but raised in Sanya, has made great efforts to protect the waters of Sanya city in
Hainan. He is now spreading the knowledge of environmental protection through new
media platforms(媒体平台).
Around 2014, he began doing volunteer work to clear rubbish from the beaches
and officially registered(注册) as a volunteer in May, 2017. Li Jin immediately
took the lead in a cleanup activity on the Sanya River.

In April, 2021, he used his own money to set up a volunteer service centre
which has 1,170 registered members who take part in activities without asking for
payment. So far, he has spent about 3,800 hours on volunteer activities in over 550
events. More than 2,300 people have joined in with his encouragement. They’ve
drawn the attention of both the adults(成年人) and the children to the importance of
protecting the oceans and beaches. Since it was set up, his centre has organized 51
beach-cleaning activities that have seen about 1,800 people join in. In 2021,
because of Li’s growing influence in environmental protection circles, the city
government invited him to make a number of short videos, in which he uses simple
words to explain how to protect the environment. Several of the videos have been
watched millions of times.
“My volunteer work would be meaningless if I got paid. But the work itself is of
great value. So I will continue doing the environmental protection work,” he said.

Is the world too crowded? Well, that’s a hard question to answer. It’s all a
matter of perspective(视角). In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any
direction and not see another human being. In Macao, 60,000 people live in every
square mile!
The world’s population doesn’t stay the same. It has been increasing at a very fast
rate. That’s in part because in each generation(一代), there are more people who
like to have children than in the last generation.

Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 460 million. In
1900, the world’s population was under 2 billion. Right now it is doubling every 40
years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you are a parent, there
will be twice as many people on the earth as there are now. Wow! Now that’s a lot of
people! Soon the world’s population will probably reach 10 billion. Some people
worry about that! But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on
the earth equals(等于) too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people
there are, the more resources will be needed. We have to think carefully about how
we live and use the earth’s resources.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern
communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago,
but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Pollution comes in
many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Men have been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many
years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people.
When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another
place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world,
but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes
our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from
burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the
air. Pollution by SO2, is now one of the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is
caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will
be less air pollution.
The earth is our home, so we must take good care of it. It means keeping the
land, water and air clean.
