One day a teacher entered the classroom and gave the students a surprise test. He gave out the paper and asked his students to turn the page and begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the page.
The teacher saw the expression on everyone’s face and said, “I want you to write what you see there.” The confused students got started on the hard task. At the end of the class, the teacher took all the answer papers and started reading each one of them. All of them described the black dot and tried to explain where it was on the paper.
After all had been read, the classroom was quiet. The teacher began to explain, “I am not going to grade you according to this. I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot. The same happens in our lives. We have a white paper to enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a gift filled with love and care. We always have reasons to celebrate — friends that help us or jobs that support our lives.”
“However, we keep focusing only on the dark spots, the health problems, the lack of money or the bad relationship with a family member. The dark spots are really annoying, but they are very small. Take your eyes away from the black spots in your life. Enjoy each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a positive life!”

How do we know about things happened thousands of years ago, when there were no videos or photos? One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese civilization (文明) are known as oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文). This year is the 120th anniversary of their discovery.
More than 3,000 years ago, people in the Shang Dynasty (c. 16th ---11th century BC) liked to ask the fortune tellers (占卜师) about the future. For example, what will the weather be like next week? Where should I go to make money? Will my wife give birth to a boy or a girl? From work to love, people asked questions about many topics. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone, heat it up, and read the cracks (裂纹) in it to find an answer.
Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us a great deal about how people lived during the Shang Dynasty. “They help us understand the origins (起源) of Chinese philosophy (哲学) and thought, and figure out where our culture comes from.” Song Zhenhao, a leading oracle bone expert, told China Daily.
In addition to telling us about ancient Chinese culture, the oracle bones are also key to the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. Many of the characters we used today are similar to those used 3,000 years ago. “The oracle bone inscriptions, as the earliest-known mature (成熟的) form of Chinese characters, represent the beauty and uniqueness of a language that has been passed on consistently (持续地),” said Chen Nan, a professor at Tsinghua University.
In 2017, UNESCO added oracle bone inscriptions to the Memory of the World Register (“世界记忆”名录). They are indeed a valuable memory of ancient China.

You’d be surprised how much confusion there is about basic food facts.
The Innovation Center of U.S. Dairy paid for an online survey. It asked questions of people all over the country and found something a bit surprising. Seven percent of all American adults have the wrong idea about chocolate milk. They think it comes from brown cows.
If you do the math, that works out to 16.4 million misinformed milk-drinkers. That is more people than the whole population of Pennsylvania. And all of these people do not know that chocolate milk is milk, cocoa and sugar.
The survey has attracted great attention. For decades, observers (观察者) in agriculture (农业), nutrition(营养) and education have complained that many Americans have little education about agriculture. They don’t know where food is grown, or how it gets to stores. In the case of chocolate milk, they don’t even know what’s in it.
In some populations, there is much confusion about basic food facts. A team of researchers interviewed fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders at a school in a city in California. They found that more than half of the students didn’t know that onions and lettuce were plants. Four in 10 didn’t know that hamburgers came from cows. And 3 in 10 didn’t know that cheese is made from milk.
Researchers say these basic lessons are important for kids to learn how to eat healthily. It could be important in dealing with problems like heart disease and being unhealthily overweight. “We still have kids who are surprised that a French fry comes from a potato.” she said, “_______________________________________________” She also suggests that parents and schools should encourage them to get closer to the food they eat every day.
