For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the notice board that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was“Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, to him it couldn’t be worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts (疑惑),but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never became different again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a wonderful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

What vegetable can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone? The answer is chilies (辣椒).
Many of us in China enjoy adding chilies to our food, but did you know that this spicy (辣的) vegetable could also be dangerous?
A 34-year-old US man recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili people have known so far. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered (遭受) from serious headaches in the following days, reported BBC News.
In fact, eating spicy food also causes stomachache and headache.
But if chilies are harmful, why do people like to eat this vegetable? So what makes people love chilies so much? Here are two reasons. One reason is that he human body is influenced by natural chemicals (化学物质) that produce “a sense of happiness”, noted BBC News.
The other reason is that chilies do good to people’s health. Scientists found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and bring less death risk at an early age. So, don’t worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are actually good for us.

Homework, exams and most importantly, test scores – the things you have to worry about seem endless. You are not alone. In China, many students are stressed out by excessive (过多的) workloads. But there might be good news for some of them.
On Oct 28,2019, the Education Department of Zhejiang province published a draft (草案) regulation on cutting student workloads. The law has started a hot discussion.
Among the many clauses (条款), one guideline stands out. It grants (允许) primary school pupils the right to leave their homework unfinished after 9 pm, and junior high school students after 10 pm, with parents’ agreement.
Children in Zhejiang will likely welcome the move. However, the draft has met objections, largely from parents. Although parents don’t want their children overwhelmed (压倒) with homework, many have expressed their worry about the results of workload reduction(减少).
There is a very practical reason for the objections: gaokao, the “all-important” national college entrance exam. If schools reduce homework, “the parents, who want their children to stand out from their peers(同辈)and score higher, must provide them with more after-school training,” Zhang Yi, a primary school teacher in Hangzhou, told Beijing Youth Daily.
Chu Zhaohui, a researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, also doubted the feasibility (可行性) of such guidelines. “These measures are not practical in the current social situation,” he said to People’s Daily. “Even if schools make changes, it is difficult to change the pursuit (追求) of scores in a test-oriented (应试的) educational environment.”
Chu suggests that it would make better sense to change the system of college admissions, “In many other countries, the performance of students is assessed by professional institutions rather than government. For some top colleges, students’ scores only account for 25 to 40 percent of their assessments. So students won’t spend so much of their time on scores,” Chu said.
9. What does the underlined word “objections” in Para. 4 mean?
A. 赞成 B. 批评 C. 反对 D. 讨论
10. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. Most parents in Zhejiang are against the draft because of practical reasons.
B. If school reduce homework assignments, the students can score higher in tests.
C. The junior high school students can leave their homework unfinished after 10:00pm.
D. If the pursuit of scores is not changed, it may be hard to make students less stressed out.
11. The passage is written in a _____ tone.
A. angry B. serious C. funny D. worried
12. Chu Zhaohui does NOT express his ideas by _____.
