A's and B's were a kingdom I could never enter. Once my teacher, Miss Mills, gave me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, "Wow! This time, I'm going to pass." The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was carpet. I wrote that one down: c-a-r-p-e-t. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came neighbor — I wrote down the letter n. Then rhythm — I knew there was an r. Suburban — I wrote s-u-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D minus. Where did the words go? Some people talk about information sliding off your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever Now I know I have dyslexia(诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see the as teh, and bird as brid. My brain learns differently. A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I know that even if I learn differently, I can still be filled with greatness. Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and co-author of children's books, I tell children that everyone has something special inside. It's our job to find out what that is, get it out, and give it to the world as a gift. 1 What was the writer's problem in grade school? A. He had trouble spelling. B. He often got the C minus. C. Many colour-related phrases are common in our speech. Let's see where they came from. •The Blues The phrase is a short form of "blue devils", which also stands for sad feelings. This expression is also used to describe a type of jazz music that became popular in the south of America. •Black Sheep of the Family The phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is unacceptable. In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market, because their fleece(羊毛) could not be coloured. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member of the group. •A Red-letter Day A Red-letter Day is a day when something really exciting and memorable(值得纪念的) happens. It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends. •Green with Envy Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the colour green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks who connected it with sickness caused by envy. When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced too much bile(胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish colour. That is green with envy. 根据短文内容补全下面短文(每空一词)People use colours to express their feelings and describe the world. We often 1 many colour-related phrases in our speech. Dragon Head-Raising Festival China is a country with a long and rich history. 1 Double Second Festival (Dragon Head-Raising Festival or Longtaitou Festival) is one of them. This special day is on the second day of the second month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It stands for the start of spring and farming.   The dragon plays an important role in Chinese culture. Dragon culture is one of the most popular cultures in China. 2 People celebrated Dragon Head-Raising Festival with many customs about the dragon in ancient times.  On the special day, people put ashes(灰烬) around their houses. 3 People believed that if the dragon went into their houses, they could have good luck all year round and have a good harvest. On the special day, people ate special food. 4 For example, people ate noodles called "dragon whisker noodles" (longxumian)and dumplings called "dragon's ears". On the special day, people sent gifts to each other, picked vegetables, welcomed wealth and went on a spring outing.   5 Today people rush to have their hair cut, especially have their children's hair cut on Dragon Head-Raising Festival. They want to make themselves have new looks and have a good year. A. The food was usually named after the dragon. B. Why is it called "dragon lifting its head"? C. It has many colorful holidays and festivals. D. Chinese people call themselves descendants (后代) of the dragon. E. They thought the dragon could be led into their houses with the help of the ashes. F. Even though many of the customs have faded away (消失), the tradition of cutting hair is becoming more and more popular. Screen-Free Days I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. Jokingly, I said to the group, "What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones?" They laughed, and one of them said, "No way, Mr. White. That would be too much." I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset. According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parent drop-offs — they can't use their own "screens" at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day. It's clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That's why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days. During the course of the year,we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without "screens". For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is "out of date". Others have designed something completely new. Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape (密室逃脱)games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on "likes" they've got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones. After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important. While technology is already part of our world,it shouldn't play such an important role in a learner's life. 1 How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day? ___________________________________________________________________ 2 Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days? ___________________________________________________________________ 3 What fun activities can the students have at school? ___________________________________________________________________ 4 How did the students feel after the first screen-free day? ___________________________________________________________________ 5新考法·创新性设问What do you think of the idea of screen-free days? Why do you think so? ___________________________________________________________________ U1 拓展阅读 一、阅读理解 【解题导语】 作者上小学时拼写困难,未能充分发挥学习潜力,但现在他认识到自己即使有诵读困难症也能取得成就。 根据第二段中的"My confidence failed me"可推知,C项符合题意。 A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself...I can still be filled with greatness"可知答案为D。 When I was 12 years old, my mother sent me to a Chinese school"可知,young符合语境。 When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced   too muchbile, giving his or her skin a greenish colour. 1 hear/use/find 根据第一段中的"Many colour-related phrases are common in our speech"可知,此处可以用hear/use/find来表示与颜色相关的短语在我们的讲话中很常见。 2 sadness/unhappiness 根据The Blues相关内容中的"The phrase is a short form of ‘blue devils’, which also stands for sad feelings"可知,空处所填内容在意思上与"sad feelings"相近。 3 worth 根据Black Sheep of the Family相关内容中的"In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market"可知,此处说的是:所以在市场上,黑羊不如白羊值钱。 4 needed/required 根据A Red-letter Day相关内容中的"It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends"可知,"红色字母日"(重要纪念日)来自于在日历上用红色标记一个需要记住的特殊日子的惯常做法。 Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the colour green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks who connected it with sickness caused by envy"可知,空处表示"与……有关",应用"have something to do with"结构。 3E 上文中的"people put ashes (灰烬)around their houses"与E项中的"with the help of the ashes"相呼应。 During the course of the year,we have built in  several   screen-free days (that require us to make different  plans for our students about how they will communicate with  one another and the world around them without "screens"). 1 They spend about six hours on screens every day. 2 Because they want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. 3 They can have fun activities like card games and room escape games. 4 They were surprised they enjoyed it. 5 I think the idea of screen-free days is very good for students' eyes, because the screens are full of radiation.(答案合理即可) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
