My daughter was getting married and I didn’t want to live six hours away, so we made the move. Once we moved, we were made unneeded and it was a mad race to get work. I ended up at here at Cheddar Gorge and Caves. Cheddar Gorge is like nothing else in the UK. It’s a unique phenomenon, because although there are other caves in the country, you don’t have the gorge elsewhere. This is a major geological feature, it’s three miles long and there’s just this natural, raw beauty. I can sit at my desk in guest services and look out at part of the gorge. It’s amazing. The Cheddar Gorge spirit is strong. You know, not having worked here or heard about the area, you come here and it gets under your skin in the right way. You become part of it, it becomes part of you. I’m very passionate about it. And there’s the amazing wildlife, the geology, the prehistory — Cheddar Man is still one of the greatest finds in the UK. Every day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves is different. You’ve got the rock sports side of things, the climbing, the caving. We take people through the caves on tours and we have pre-history, which we do with the museum, whereby we have schools come in and do demonstrations with them. We will dress up as genuinely as we can to reproduce the time period of the Cheddar Man, which is the Mesolithic period, so 10,000 years ago. We do fire lighting, for example, and hopefully it’s inspiring to the young people! It’s really cool to be in the museum garden and have part of the gorge as the background while you’re doing it, so you can really submerge yourself in that moment. My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge or across to the reservoir. The view is amazing. Yes, you can see pictures of it, but honestly you have to be there to fully appreciate it. You might hear some buzzards or see some sheep or goats while you’re up there, just to enhance the experience! 4. PAUL HEMINGTON originally moved to Cheddar Gorge to __________. A. settle down in the countryside B. be closer to his daughter C. land a job as a tour guide D. take part in a competitive race 5. The underlined phrase “gets under your skin” is closest in meaning to _________. A affects you deeply B. bothers you greatly C. increases your strength D. improves your skin condition 6. Which of the following falls into Paul’s job descriptions? A. He goes to the school to give lectures on pre-history. B. He demonstrates to young people how to climb rocks. C. He participates in recreating the scenes in the Mesolithic period. D. He decorates the museum garden to make it look like the gorge. 7. What does PAUL HEMINGTON talk about in this article? A. How he adapts to the local way of life. B. What major local attractions are worth seeing. C. Why Cheddar Gorge ranks first as a natural wonder. D. What makes Cheddar Gorge so special to him. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“I moved to SOMERSET mainly for my family. My daughter was getting married and I didn’t want to live six hours away, so we made the move. (我搬到SOMERSET主要是为了我的家人。我女儿要结婚了,我不想住在六小时车程以外的地方,所以我们搬了家。)”可知,PAUL HEMINGTON搬到Somerset主要是为了和家人团聚,因为他的女儿要结婚,他不想离得太远,所以他们做出了这个决定。故选B。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线短语后面的内容“You become part of it, it becomes part of you. I’m very passionate about it.(你成为它的一部分,它也成为你的一部分。我对此充满激情。)”可知, PAUL HEMINGTON认为Cheddar Gorge以正确的方式渗透到自己的内心。自己成为它的一部分,它成为自己的一部分。因此推断Cheddar Gorge对他产生了深深的影响。故选A。 根据倒数第二段中“We take people through the caves on tours and we have pre-history, which we do with the museum, whereby we have schools come in and do demonstrations with them. We will dress up as genuinely as we can to reproduce the time period of the Cheddar Man, which is the Mesolithic period, so 10,000 years ago. We do fire lighting, for example, and hopefully it’s inspiring to the young people! It’s really cool to be in the museum garden and have part of the gorge as the background while you’re doing it, so you can really submerge yourself in that moment.( 我们带人们参观洞穴,我们有史前历史,这是我们和博物馆一起做的,我们让学校来和他们一起做示范。 根据第三段中“Cheddar Gorge is like nothing else in the UK. It’s a unique phenomenon, because although there are other caves in the country, you don’t have the gorge elsewhere. (Cheddar Gorge在英国是独一无二的。这是一种独特的现象,因为尽管这个国家还有其他洞穴,但你在其他地方没有峡谷。)”以及第四段中“The Cheddar Gorge spirit is strong. (The Cheddar Gorge的精神是很强劲的)以及第五段中“Every day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves is different. (在Cheddar Gorge和洞穴的每一天都不一样。)”以及第六段中“My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge or across to the reservoir. (我最喜欢的地方是当你走过山顶时,你可以回头看到峡谷或对面的水库。)”以及通读全文可知,整篇文章都围绕PAUL HEMINGTON对Cheddar Gorge的热情和对其自然美丽、野生动物、地质学和史前历史等方面的认识和喜爱进行了描述。因此,他谈论的主题是Cheddar Gorge对他来说有什么特别之处。故选D。 C One day, there’ll be no need for you to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles (纳米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush. Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones an a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter. The tooth- cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles. When there’s a tooth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth’s surface. If there’s a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses. The new device is just a proof of concept. The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager. 8. What is special about the tooth cleaner? A. It’s water-resistant. B. It looks like a toothbrush. C. It’s appearance-changeable. D. It contains skinny bristles. 9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The bristles’ formation. B. The working principle. C. The virus-killing process. D. The magnets’ motion. 10. How does Steager feel about the future of the device? A. Uncertain. B. Unfavorable. C. Concerned. D. Positive. 11. Which of the following would be the best title? A. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth Cleaner B. Magnetic Nanoparticles for Tooth Growth C. A New Concept for Automatic Health Care D. An Antibacteria Liquid Tooth cleaner for Adults 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种利用纳米粒子和磁力的新概念自清洁牙齿技术。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones an a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.(Steager是宾夕法尼亚大学费城分校一名工程师,而 Hyun Koo 则是那里的发明家和牙科研究员,他们找到了一种方法,可以将纳米颗粒形成长而细的刷毛,非常类似于牙刷上的刷毛。但这些刷毛能够变形以适应它们遇到的任何表面)”可知,牙刷的特殊之处是其刷毛能够改变形状。故选C。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段的“The tooth- cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center.(这个牙齿清洁机器人依靠两块磁铁工作。一块磁铁位于牙齿的一侧,另一块位于另一侧。纳米颗粒悬浮在两块磁铁之间的液体中。当磁铁关闭时,纳米颗粒在液体中随机移动。而当其中一块磁铁启动时,纳米颗粒会聚集到该磁铁的中心附近)”可知,第三段详细描述了牙齿清洁机器人的工作原理,通过磁铁使纳米颗粒成形并打扫牙齿。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The new device is just a proof of concept. The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager.(这个新装置只是一个概念验证。研究人员还需要将其变成人们愿意使用的产品。“从这里到那里还有很多工程要做,但每一个好主意都需要有一个开始。”Steager说)”可知,Steager认为虽然还有好长的路要走,但这个新装置是一个好的开始。由此可推知,他对该装置的未来持积极态度。故选D。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第二段“Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones an a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.(Steager 是宾夕法尼亚大学费城分校的一名工程师,而 Hyun Koo 则是那里的发明家和牙科研究员,他们找到了一种方法,可以将纳米颗粒形成长而细的刷毛,非常类似于牙刷上的刷毛。但这些刷毛能够变形以适应它们遇到的任何表面)”可知,文章主要介绍了由工程师Steager和研究者Hyun Koo开发的一种利用纳米粒子形状变化来清洁牙齿的机器人装置的设计原理和潜力。所以“一种变形机器人洁牙器”适合作本文的标题。故选A。 D Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless, which is an old joke in the US. However, Susan Goldin-Meadowin, author of the book Thinking With Your Hands, has a rather different view. “Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians,” she laughs. “Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing.” The gesture under discussion here is the so-called “co-speech gesture”. It is much more abstract (抽象) than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for “Silence!” or raising a finger to mean “Great!”. Like words, such symbolic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, experimental subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words - while their hands will make a running movement. The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar and differ from place to place just as spoken ones do. And the co-speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they are on the edge of getting it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea. “Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention,” Susan Goldin-Meadow in adds. “Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both.” 12. What does Susan Goldin-Meadowin really want to tell us in paragraph 2? A. Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman. B. Italians are very talkative and gesture too much. C. It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other. D. Co-speech gestures are used by all of us unknowingly. 13. What can we say about sign languages? A. They are as abstract as co-speech gestures. B. They are usually learned by human beings naturally. C. They have distinctly structured words and grammar. D. They vary from culture to culture and person to person. 14. What does the author suggest teachers do in the passage? A. Put enough trust in students. B. Encourage students to tell the truth. C. Observe the co-speech gestures carefully. D. Teach as many tricky problems as possible. 15. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Co-speech gestures play a vital part in communication. B. Symbolic gestures differ greatly from co-speech gestures. C. Co-speech gestures are more difficult than sign languages. D. Symbolic gestures have great potential for practical applications. 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了一种身体语言co-speech gesture及其用途。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing. (会议口译员在他们的小房间里做手势,尽管没有人看着他们。即使是天生失明的人在说话时也会做出手势,包括彼此之间。在电视剧《王冠》中,戴安娜王妃被警告说,她的手可能会暴露出她的真实情绪,这可能是危险的,必须把它们绑在一起,这样她才能学会不用手势说话。)”这几个例子可推断,Susan Goldin-Meadowin认为这种co-speech gesture是下意识的,而且所有人都会用。故选D项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题,根据第三段“The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar and differ from place to place just as spoken ones do. (co-speech gesture 也不是手语。手语它们有明确定义的单词和语法,并且像口语一样因地而异。)”可知,手语有明确的单词和语法。故选C项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“For example, teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that ındıcates they are on the edge of getting it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea. (例如,鼓励教师自己使用手势,并观察学生的手势。一些在棘手的数学问题上失败的学生可能会做出一种暗示,表明他们即将得到它;他们应该与那些手势表明他们茫然人区别开来教。)”可推断,作者会建议教师细致观察学生手势,来确定学生是否真正理解而更好地分开教学。故选C项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both. (Co-speech gesturing不仅仅是关于缺乏控制。它是关于思考和交流的,对两者都有帮助。)”可知,本文主要是说明co-speech gesture在交流中的重要作用。所以A项Co- speech gestures play a vital part in communication.(Co-speech Gestures 是交流的重要组成部分。)符合语境。故选A项。 第二节 (共5个小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nowadays, many people tend to use comparisons as a force to beat themselves up. B PAUL HEMINGTON, 57, is the Assistant Operations Manager at Cheddar Gorge(切达峡谷) and Caves cheddargorge.co.uk I moved to SOMERSET mainly for my family. A. affects you deeply B. bothers you greatly C. increases your strength D. improves your skin condition 6. C One day, there’ll be no need for you to brush your teeth by hand. 第二节 (共5个小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nowadays, many people tend to use comparisons as a force to beat themselves up.
