①When I was a boy, I had the craziest bus ride to school every day. First I had to get up early, eat my breakfast and walk across a wooden bridge. Then I waited for the bus to arrive. When it got there, I climbed in. I was always one of the first ones on the bus. Even though I lived only four miles from school, my bus ride would last about 45 minutes!
②First the bus went in the opposite direction for six miles, parked and waited for another bus, which we would then board. The new bus started up a long mountain road, stopping at every house to pick up more children. Finally, it arrived at the high school to drop off the older children before going to my school. It didn’t go straight there, but instead went down another road to pick up even more children. I usually got to school just before the first class bell rang.
③Luckily, the ride home was different. This time, the children who were picked up last were the first to be dropped off. Since my house was along the way, I got dropped off after just 10 minutes or so. I remember I would run across that old bridge, because I was so happy to be home again.
④Looking back now, I can see my whole life here has been one long bus ride. It has been full of stops, starts, twists (曲折) and turns. Some of the passengers are mean, but most are kind.
⑤Sometimes the road has been smooth, other times it has been hard. Through it all, though, I know that one day I will be going home again. Try your best to enjoy the ride this life gives you.

When September comes, the new term begins. Parents are all excited because their kids are going back to school. There’s nothing better than this. Looking back at the online-class period, what woke up the parents every morning was not their alarms, but their kids’ coming online classes. Cooking meals, signing-in(登陆) learning apps and handing in homework pictures were daily activities for parents to get everything ready for kids. At the same time, the parents had to pay full attention to their kids because there’s no difference between giving a kid an electronic product and ▲ .
What a coincidence! In ancient times, the new term started around White Dew(白露) in September, too. People used to have “four big ceremonies in life” which included the ceremony of “starting school, becoming an adult , getting married and burial”. The ceremony of starting school was a big thing. It showed everyone’s best wishes for a kid.
Not every kid could go to school. Most of them had to work. But if you were a boy, your father could send you to school. How does it feel when someone listens to you without interrupting (打断) you? This is called active listening and it’s a great way to understand other people’s feelings and build trust between friends.
Active listening means trying to understand how someone feels by listening carefully to what they’re saying and by paying attention to their body language. Annie, aged 11, explains what it means to her. “When my friends tell me something important, I listen to what they’re trying to say. I can tell by their voice and the look on their face if they’re upset or happy. This makes me feel like I understand them better.”
Listening closely to someone without interrupting or giving your own opinion shows that you’re interested in what they’re saying, even if you don’t agree. This helps to avoid mistakes(避免错误)and arguments and can strengthen (加强) friendships. It’s also a good way to improve your empathy (共情) skills because you’re learning to see the world through someone else’s eyes. Samaritans is an organization that supports people by listening to their worries. It says, “Really listening to people makes them feel valued(被尊重的)and understood, and being able to listen carefully to others helps you be someone who others feel they can turn to and trust.”
How can you be an active listener? Listen carefully to what your friend is saying, and avoid jumping in with your own thoughts and feelings. If you really want to talk, making a listening sign like nodding your head instead. Ask questions or say things that need more than a yes or no answer, like “Tell me more”. Try looking for clues (线索) about how they’re feeling in their face and body too. “Active listening is a skill and it takes a lot of practice,” says Samaritans, “but don’t give up, and remember you can only do your best.”
48. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. Living environment. B. School days.
C. Unexpected events. D. Interpersonal communication.
49. What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A. Other people’s feelings. B. Annie’s friends.
C Friendships. D. Others.
50. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How can you be an active listener? B. When should one be an active listener?
C. Why should you be an active listener? D. Who is an active listener?
51. What can we know about active listening according to Samaritans?
A. It is as important as asking questions. B. It makes others accept your ideas easily.
C. It makes you be an active person easily. D. It is a skill and takes lots of practice.
52. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to build trust between friends. B. How to avoid mistakes and arguments.
C. How to be a good listener. D. How to improve your empathy skills.

Growing Up with Reading
Reading can make us a better version of ourselves and it has a lot of advantages. Reading can not only help us get a lot of knowledge, but also help us open up our eyes. At the same time, it can make ourselves feel more confident and improve ourselves.
I have already read Journey to the West. The Monkey King uses a magic stick to fight against the bad people. I’m interested in reading this book because the Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up. It is so good that I can’t put it down. After reading it, I know the importance of cooperation and responsibilities.
So I suggest that everyone should read more books, especially classics, in their spare time. And I hope that everyone can get into the habit of reading, which can bring us a lot of pleasure.
