Feeling overloaded by your todo list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.
In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two largescale(大规模的)surveys about how Americans spend their time.Together, the surveys included more than 35,000 respondents. The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective wellbeing—but only up to a point.People who had around two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the freetime“sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.
Part of finding this seemingly tricky “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing“productive”things (like exercising)or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV).Study participants believed their wellbeing would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively.Though that experiment was hypothetical, which is one limitation of the new research, it's certainly in line with other research showing that being in a state of “flow” can be good for people's mental health.
Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. Many traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun.Engaging in a bit of lowkey cardio, like walking and jogging, can help reduce stress.Freetime activities like reading or cooking are also known to put people in a state of “flow”.
1.What does the underlined word “elixir” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Magic solution.
B.Physical power.
C.Psychological test.
D.Relaxed atmosphere.
2.How did the researchers carry out the new study?
A.By doing largescale online surveys.
B.By giving interviews and mental tests.
C.By comparing respondents' backgrounds.
D.By conducting experiments and analyzing data.
3.What is a distinct finding of the new research?
A.Doing unproductive things leads to unhappiness.
B.Being in a state of “flow” benefits people's mental health.
C.Man's wellbeing is positively related to the free time they have.
D.How people spend their free time affects their sense of wellbeing.
4.What is the focus of the last paragraph?
A.The importance of reducing stress.
B.Easy and fun activities to kill time.
C.Further explanation of being productive.
D.The benefits of engaging in freetime activities.
(2024·福州市高中毕业班质检)We all have things that we want to achieve in our lives—getting into the better shape, building a successful business, raising a wonderful family, and so on. 1 At least, this is how I approached my life goals until recently.
What I'm starting to realize, however,is that when it comes to actually getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a much better way to do things. It all comes down to the difference between goals and systems. 2 Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week. Now for the really interesting question:If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get results?I think you would.
3 In the last 12 months,I've written over 115,000 words. The typical book is about 50,000 to 60,000 words,so I have written enough to fill two books this year. All of this is such a surprise because I never set a goal for my writing.I didn't measure my progress in relation to some benchmark. 4 I never said,“I want to write two books this year.” What I did focus on was writing one article every Monday and Thursday.I focused on my system and the process of doing the work. And after sticking to that schedule for 11 months, the result was 115,000 words. In the end,I enjoyed the same(or perhaps better)results.
Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress.Goals can provide directions and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a welldesigned system will always win.Having a system is what matters. 5
A.None of this is to say that goals are useless.
B.If you're a writer,your goal is to write a book.
C.Forget about predicting the future and build a system.
D.I never set a word count goal for any particular article.
E.Committing to the process is what makes the difference.
F.And for most of us,the path to those things starts by setting a specific goal.
G.As an example,I just added up the total word count for the articles I've written this year.

The New Year holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So,when the doorbell rang,I was sure some of the packages had arrived.I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there.I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel,so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us.She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion.Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten.Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did,but with much less fear.Angelica the calico was courageous.
So,I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar(地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety(摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths.I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn't explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around.Though I knew I was stretching it,I figured that Angelica would count as my companion.I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above.Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.

根据第二段中的“researchers analyzed data from two largescale surveys”和第三段中的“They conducted several smaller online experiments.”
根据第三段中的“Part of finding this seemingly tricky‘sweet spot’ has to do with how people spend the extra time they have”可知,新的研究的一个独特发现是人们如何度过空闲时间决定了他们是否快乐,故D项正确。]
根据最后一段首句中的“what feels‘productive’ is up to you”和后面列举的具体活动可知,尾段内容主要是对productive的进一步解释说明。]
provide sth.for sb. 故填for。
故填was launched。]
动词intend后常接动词不定式,be intended to do sth.“打算做某事”,故填to inspire。]
分析句子结构可知,“attracting 60,000 teams ________ involving millions of students and teachers”在句中作状语,且空格前后内容之间为并列关系,故填并列连词and。]
根据时间状语In the past decade可知,此处应用现在完成时,又因GNHD与add是主动关系,故填has added。
10.achievement/achievements [考查名词。
I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight was broken,as were my eyeglasses and my phone.I turned on the phone and it lit up! Sadly, however,no signal. If only I could get the stillfunctioning phone up through the door,it might connect to the Internet,so I could shout at Siri from down below for help.In the daylight,I could make out Angelica was mewing at me from above.
It seemed my companion,Angelica, was my last hope. She kept her eye on me.Waving the phone,I instructed “Angelica! Catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer,I cast the phone upward.Miraculously,Angelica managed to catch it with her paws as it shot through the door and laid it right by the entrance.Once it connected to the Internet,I yelled at Siri to call the emergency services. With them on the line,I screamed out my situation. When the heavy footsteps came near,I knew I was saved.I no longer wonder if it was Angelica who rang the doorbell that day.
