As a university student, I decided to learn French. For some reason I really liked the language, but I was not very good at learning it. The grammar 1 me a lot and even drove me crazy. My only advantage was 2 —I got an A in every word test I took. After two years of studies, I struggled to communicate in 3 French and signed up to study in France to complete my degree. It was the 4 term I would ever have.
The moment I arrived in France, I felt like I was starting from scratch (从头开始). The French I’d learned in university wasn’t practical for everyday conversations. It is difficult for me to get around, read emails and talk with my classmates. I was often nervous at school, worried about 5 I could understand my teachers in class. I only 6 a little around my eight roommates, who were willing to speak French slowly to me and didn’t seem to mind my 7 .
I chose to study three courses—reading & writing, grammar and history. The history class was a big challenge for me. The teacher spoke so 8 that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded every single word he said in class, but 9 helped. I had no idea what the class was really about. Years have passed, but I never forget how hard 10 was for me to manage to get my degree. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as my success.

②About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people could know midday. On cloudy days or at night, it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
③In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. In 1927, the first quartz (石英) clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. Nowadays, satellites can send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
④There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed and not being late for school or work.

Many inventions have changed people’s life. My robot cleaner is one of them.
It’s a round smart appliance, just like a big cake with three wheels at the bottom of it so that it can move freely. It’s as smart as a human being because it can clean the floor itself in a house. What’s more, it works with electricity, so it is better for the environment. Above all, it’s more convenient for us to use it because we can control it by using our mobile phones.
In my opinion, the robot cleaner is a great invention and our good friend. It saves time and helps us live a better life. Why not have a try and buy one for yourself?
