Unit1. Passage1. Anxiety isn’t funny. When we feel worried or afraid, the last thing we feel like doing is laughing. Finding humor can be difficult when we live with anxiety. However, if we begin to look for humor, we can find that laughter can be a great coping skill. Researchers have discovered that laughter has many benefits. Among the ways laughter lifts us by increasing our overall well-being and boosting our mental health. When we live with anxiety, our stress hormones pulse through us. This makes us feel tense and anxious. Although there are no quick solutions for anything in our life, a good laugh can instantly begin to reduce these harmful stress hormones that are mixed with anxiety. Laughter gets to work immediately, and a regular “diet” of laughter continues to decrease anxiety over time. The act of laughing is similar to deep breathing in its ability to increase the oxygen in our bodies. Combined with reducing stress hormones, the increased oxygen in our bodies helps lead to muscle relaxation. All of this helps reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety. Laughing feels good. It’s addictive and we can keep wanting more. When we laugh regularly, our anxiety begins to decrease. When we have humor and give ourselves a chance to laugh a little bit for even a short while each day, we distract our focus. Rather than seeing the world within or without as a worrying place, we start to see it as a good, safe, and perhaps even fun place. We start to see beyond the anxiety. Sure, the anxiety lingers (徘徊) for a while, but every time we laugh, we can reduce it. Introducing intentional laughter into our life decreases our stress hormones. Breathing deeply during the act of laughing relaxes muscles. Thinking about something funny shifts our focus to new things. Having humor regularly helps our outlook become more positive. 1.What can make us feel nervous? A.Pulsing stress hormones. B.Lacking sense of humour. C.Tiredness and sleepiness. D.Feeling eager to get something. 2.Why is deep breathing mentioned in Paragraph 3? A.To compare it with taking exercice. B.To suggest people do it more often. C.To show its importance to the body. D.To explain how laughing reduces anxiety. 3.What does Paragraph 4 focus on in terms of laughter? A.Its functions. B.Its concept. C.Its causes. D.Its disadvantages. 4.Who might need to read the text most? A.A person who has developed a bad habit. B.A person who tends to feel nervous easily. C.A person who is fond of humorous stories. D.A person who can’t get along well with others. Passage2. Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct(改正) it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances(机会) to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转)door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 1.Happiness is for_________. A.those who have large and beautiful houses B.those who have cars C.those who have a lot of money D.all people 2.When you do something wrong, _________. A.you may correct it B.you will have no chance to challenge yourself C.anybody will laugh at you D.you will be happy 3.Which is the title of the passage? A.Do Something Good to Others B.Happy and Lucky C.Happiness D.Life and Success Passage3. You can choose happiness regardless of your situations. You can choose to be happy no matter what challenges life brings you. Let the following simple strategies (策略) guide you back to your natural happy state. Make lemonade (柠檬水) when life gives you lemons. Besides happiness, trouble will also be part of life. It’s how you choose to react to your situations that make the difference. If you look at something hard enough, you’ll see the positive side of it. Do what you love doing. Do you have a lifelong dream or desire? If so, start working towards it. Taking baby steps towards a goal will help you feel like you’re accomplishing something. You’ll find drive and determination to reach that goal when it’s something you love doing. Use one of your talents. One reason why so many people are unhappy is that they’re not doing what they're called to do with their God-given talents. Each of us has a purpose in life. You have natural talents to help you achieve your purpose, so use your talents effectively. Call a friend who you know is positive and cheerful. Talk about your feelings and listen to their advice. Usually, people allow themselves to go deeper and deeper into self-depression. The truth is that you don’t have to be sad. You can decide to be happy. You just have to make up your mind to do so. Gratitude is the quickest cure for sadness. When you focus on w has wrong with your life, you forget to look at what’s right and good. Take a step back and reflect on your life. Do you have children or family to be thankful for? Yes, they may not be the person we’d like them to be, but imagine life without them. Now, be thankful that you have them in your lit. Let your feelings out on paper. Often you’ll find that just getting your feelings down on paper will allow you to work through them, helping you feel better about yourself and your beautiful life! 1.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph? A.To expect readers to ignore themselves. B.To start a discussion among readers. C.To carry out a challenge among readers. D.To introduce the topic to readers. 2.What can be inferred from paragraph 2? A.Trouble is part of life. B.Lemonade is very delicious. C.Life is full of sweetness and bitterness. D.Lemons can only be used to make lemonade. 3.Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “God-given” in paragraph 4? A.Different B.Excellent. C.Natural. D.Learned. 4.Which of the following strategies is NOT mentioned in this passage? A.Do many activities. B.Be grateful. C.Call a cheerful friend. D.Use one of your talents. Passage4. The idea that you can use humour, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humour, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy. Treat the blues with a sense of humour, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you,and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger. Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling. Anyway, adding humour, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humour, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier. 1.What can laughter increase according to the author? A.Cognitive ability. B.Good relationships and happiness. C.A sense of humour. D.Illness. 2.What does the author think the old should do? A.They should have a good rest. B.They should play like children. C.They should prevent cognitive falling. D.They should take part in physical play. 3.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Humour, Laughter and Play for Health B.Always Keep Our Body Healthy C.Have an Active and Happy Life D.Let Our Body and Mind Relax 4.What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Playing an important role. B.Keeping people in high spirits. C.Quickly influencing other people. D.Preventing illness from spreading. Passage5. Who’s in control of your life? Who’s pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde put it,“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsening lives to keep getting their fix, we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval. But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think.People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they’re more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting tired and probably pleasing no one in the process. So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life. 1.It can be concluded from the passage that . A.it’s better to follow others’ opinions B.it’s important to accept others’ comments C.we shouldn’t change our own decision D.we shouldn’t care too much what others think 2.What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph? A.The price of taking the drug is freedom. B.We may lose ourselves to win the approval of others. C.We need to pay for what we want to get. D.Changing opinions may cost us our freedom. 3.What Oscar Wilde said implies that . A.most people have a variety of thoughts B.we have thoughts similar to those of others C.other people’s thoughts are more important D.most people’s thoughts are affected by others 4.The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by . A.discussing questions B.making suggestions C.analyzing causes and effects D.providing examples and facts Passage6. “Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection. The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems. The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development. “The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities. “I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeling challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.” 1.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.Humor could benefit people’s health. B.Joyful women can live longer than happy men. C.Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily. D.Humor makes people pay more attention to their health. 2.The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________. A.men have poor memories as they age B.men become less humorous as they grow older C.men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older D.men take part in fewer social activities as they age 3.How does the author show the research findings? A.By listing data. B.By giving examples. C.By stating arguments. D.By making experiments. 4.Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with? A.Humoriess people have an unhappy childhood. B.Children must learn to be humorous at an early age. C.Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life. D.Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education. Passage7. At a comedy night at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, members of the school’s StandUp Comedy Club bring lots of laughter to their classmates with funny speeches and humorous body movements. These college students’ humour entertains busy, young people and eases their stress. Yet the club member Ariella Shua says comedy is serious work. Every comedy starts as an individual project—each member writes their own material. Then they try it out in weekly club meetings where all club members read the material, go joke by joke and see what works and what doesn’t. Nothing unsatisfactory will be compromised (妥协).In this way comes a satisfying comedy. Ariella joined the club last year. Now she does not go anywhere without bringing something on which she can take notes. “Whenever I just have a thought in my head that seems like ‘Oh, this is strange.’ or when I see something or overhear someone saying something in the library, I just put it down,” Ariella explained. “Later, when I’m trying to write my own material, I go through my notes to see if there is anything that I can use.” President of the StandUp Comedy Club Nicholas Scandura finds that writing is one of the many skills he has developed since joining the club. “Writing jokes is really fun and it takes a lot of critical thinking,” he said. The club gives its members a sense of community. When they meet, they share funny experiences, tell jokes and laugh. Over the past ten years, standup comedy clubs have become common on college campuses in America. Nicholas said, “Now everyone wants to do it because the culture of standup has gotten a lot of media attention and become more popular.” Last year, Harry Kuperstein joined the club and discovered the club was a natural fit. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world. Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he would need as a medical doctor. “Having jokes ready to go might help smooth over interactions between doctors and patients and make you a better public speaker,” he said. 1.What can a successful comedy be described as according to the text? A.A group effort. B.A personal project. C.A satisfying task. D.A compromise result. 2.What habit has Ariella formed since joining the club? A.Taking notes in class. B.Creating her own style. C.Becoming a good observer. D.Going to the library regularly. 3.How can the club help Harry in his opinion? A.By easing his stress of being a doctor. B.By preparing the ground for his career. C.By changing his way of communication. D.By developing his interest in public speaking. 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Laughter Is Serious Work B.Humour Is an Edge in Jobs C.Comedy Comes with Learning D.Clubs Influence One’s World View Passage8. Is smile just a facial expression? Of course not! It is not only used to express pleasure, affection, and friendliness, but also the commonest way to show our good will perfectly without saying anything. It is a timeproven fact that smile is a universal symbol that can be understood by the people of every nation in the world. One day while shopping, I met a clerk who seemed quite unfriendly and not at all concerned about my intended purchase. I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store. On the outside stood a young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in an instant a beautiful, brilliant smile covered his face. The magic power of that smile made all bitterness within me melt, and I found the muscles in my own face happily responding. “Beautiful day, isn’t it?” I remarked when passing. Then, obeying an impulse (冲动), I turned back. “I really owe you a debt of gratitude, ”I said softly. His smile deepened, but he made no attempt to answer. His companions—a Mexican woman and two men were standing nearby. “Carlos, he speaks no English, ”the woman volunteered. “You want me to tell him something?” “Yes, ”my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, “please tell him I said, ‘Thank you! ’” “Thank you?” the woman seemed slightly confused. I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave. “Just tell him that,” I insisted. “He’ll understand, I am sure !” Although I have never seen that young man again, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I was conscious of the power of smile, and I practiced the art diligently. 1.Why did the author go angrily out of the store? A.He was unsatisfied with the goods. This makes us feel tense and anxious(当我们生活在焦虑中,我们的压力荷尔蒙会在我们体内涌动。 故选A项。 2. 根据第三段中的“The act of laughing is similar to deep breathing in its ability to increase the oxygen in our bodies. Combined with reducing stress hormones, the increased oxygen in our bodies helps lead to muscle relaxation. All of this helps reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety(笑的行为类似于深呼吸,能够增加我们体内的氧气。 It’s addictive and we can keep wanting more. Sure, the anxiety lingers (徘徊) for a while, but every time we laugh, we can reduce it(笑感觉很好。 故选A项。 4. When we feel worried or afraid, the last thing we feel like doing is laughing. Finding humor can be difficult when we live with anxiety. However, if we begin to look for humor, we can find that laughter can be a great coping skill.(焦虑并不好笑。 Passage2. A.Do Something Good to Others B.Happy and Lucky C.Happiness D.Life and Success 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 【导语】这是一篇演讲稿。 根据第二段“when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct(改正) it.(当你做错事时,你周围的人会帮助你纠正它)”可知,你做了错事的时候,可以在亲人朋友的帮助下改正它。故选A项。 3. 根据文章三个段落的首句“Happiness is for everyone.(幸福属于每个人)”“In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it.(事实上,只要你用心,幸福就在你身边)”及“Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. Passage3. It’s how you choose to react to your situations that make the difference. If you look at something hard enough, you’ll see the positive side of it.(除了快乐,麻烦也是生活的一部分。 Use one of your talents.下面段落“One reason why so many people are unhappy is that they’re not doing what they’re called to do with their God-given talents. Each of us has a purpose in life. 根据第二段中的“When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. 根据第三段第三句“Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. 文章属于总分总结构,根据第一段中的“The sense of humour, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy. ”和最后一段“Anyway, adding humour, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humour, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier. 故选A。 4. 根据第二段第三、四句内容“Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. C。 Passage5. A.discussing questions B.making suggestions C.analyzing causes and effects D.providing examples and facts 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.D 4.C 【导语】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。 根据文章最后一段“So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think.(那么我们怎样才能夺回控制权呢? 根据文章第三段“But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves.(但是,就像任何药物一样,这是要付出代价的。 和“The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting tired and probably pleasing no one in the process.(试图取悦所有人的人最终只会感到疲惫,而且可能在这个过程中谁也取悦不了。)” 根据文章第一段“As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”(大部分的人是其它人。 C。 Passage6. 【答案】1.A 2.B 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段“Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection. Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.(研究发现,幽默感强的女性即使生病也能活得更长,尤其是那些有心脏问题和感染的女性。 故选A。 2. 根据第三段“The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged.(研究结果表明,对于女性来说,那些在幽默思维方式上得分较高的人,死于各种原因的风险降低48%,死于心脏问题的风险降低73%,死于感染的风险降低83%。 根据第三段“The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. A.Laughter Is Serious Work B.Humour Is an Edge in Jobs C.Comedy Comes with Learning D.Clubs Influence One’s World View 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 根据第二段“Every comedy starts as an individual project—each member writes their own material. Then they try it out in weekly club meetings where all club members read the material, go joke by joke and see what works and what doesn’t. 根据第三段中的“Whenever I just have a thought in my head that seems like ’Oh, this is strange.’ or when I see something or overhear someone saying something in the library, I just put it down (每当我脑子里有一个想法,好像是“哦,这太奇怪了。” 根据最后一段中的“Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he would need as a medical doctor (成为一名活跃的会员也帮助他培养了未来作为一名医生所需的技能)”可知,俱乐部活动帮助 Harry努力提高未来要成为一名医生所需要的技能,即让他为未来的职业做准备,故选B项。 4. 根据第一段“These college students’ humour entertains busy, young people and eases their stress. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world Passage8.
