Discovering a hobby can lead to amazing results, as Maria Martinez, an 11-year-old with a heart of gold, has proven.
Just over a year ago, Maria came across the world of clothes-making, thanks to one of the Christmas gifts she received. Little did she know that this newfound ability would become a source of joy and purpose, not just for her, but also for countless furry friends.
“I got a gift permit at Christmas to start clothes-making lessons,” Maria said. “I really liked it.”
After mastering the basics, an idea came to her mind during a visit to a local exhibition. Surrounded by pet owners and their pets, Maria had an idea that would change lives. Why not create lovely bandannas (头巾) for dogs and cats and use them to support animal shelters?
With great interest and the support of her grandmother, Maria turned a corner of their home into a busy working room. Together, they made many beautiful bandannas, each one filled with love and care.
But Maria’s wish went far beyond creating decorations. She began donating her works to shelters like Claws Forever in Fall River, hoping to catch the eye of some people who can take these dogs and cats home.
Maria also began selling them through word-of-mouth and at various events. “At first she started just donating the bandannas because it took her much time to make them. Then she got more skilled and was able to buy cloth with some extra income that she was making from it,” her mom, Crystal, said. “Maria is a really kind giving person and she doesn’t want for much of anything. It makes her feel good to donate. We are proud of her.” Ranging from $3 to $7, money from her sales is now donated to shelters, too. A few weeks ago, she donated more than $200 to the Kingston Animal Shelter.
“They were happy and really grateful, which made me feel really good inside,” said Maria. “It makes me happy to see how it’s impacted the people and dogs.”
24.What makes it possible for Maria to start her charity?

B.To protect dogs and cats from the cold.
C.To attract more people to take in the animals.
D.To help rescue homeless dogs in the streets.
27.What is Crystal's attitude to Maria's behavior?

If you're in a public restroom, you may not want to hang around too long, because lots of airborne pathogens(病菌) are hanging around, too.
Researchers conducted flush(冲洗) tests in a public restroom with both a toilet and a urinal."After about three hours of tests involving more than 100 flushes, we found an increase in the measured aerosol levels … with the total number of droplets generated by flushing in each test ranging up to the tens of thousands," said study co-author Siddhartha Verma.
For the study, the researchers placed a particle counter(粒子记数器) at various heights of the toilet and urinal to get the size and number of droplets generated by flushing. They did the same with a covered toilet.
Droplets were found at heights of up to 5 feet for 20 seconds or longer after beginning a flush, the findings showed. The investigators found fewer droplets when the cover was closed before flushing, but the number wasn't much less. This suggests that aerosolized droplets(飞沫) escaped through small gaps between the cover and the seat.
Verma noted that both the toilet and urinal generated large quantities of droplets under 3 micrometers in size, causing a significant risk of spreading if they contain infectious microorganisms."Due to their small size, these droplets can remain floating for a long time," Verma explained in a university news release.
The researchers reported a 69.5% increase in measured levels of particles between 0.3 and 0.5 micrometers in size; a 209% increase for particles(颗粒) sized 0.5 to 1 micrometer; and a 50% increase for particles between 1 and 3 micrometers.
According to study co-author Masoud Jahandar Lashaki, "The significant accumulation of flush-generated aerosolized droplets over time suggests that the ventilation(通风) system was not effective in removing them from the closed space even though there was no obvious lack of airflow within the restroom."
Co-author Manhar Dhanak, pointed out that the study suggests that "combination of enough ventilation in the design and construction of public spaces would help prevent aerosol accumulation in closed areas such as public restrooms."
28.What does the underlined word “generated”in paragraph 2 mean?
A. discovered B. carried C. produced D. observed
29.What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 6?
A. The number of particles in smallest size increases least.
B. The number of particles in medium size increases most.
C. The number of particles escaping has nothing to do with their size.
D. The particles escape through small gaps between the cover and the seat.
30.What might be Manhar Dhanak’s suggestion to authorities?
A. To reduce high-occupancy areas.
B. To design and operate better public spaces.
C. Don’t hang around a public restroom too long.
D. To construct public spaces with better ventilation.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Public restrooms are not clean enough for people.
B. The ventilation system in public restrooms is poor.
C. The particles in restrooms may contain infectious microorganisms.
D. People shouldn’t stay in public restrooms too long for the sake of safety.
D
The impacts of climate change on people’s health around the world, including deaths due to heatwaves and the consequences of food insecurity, have become a big concern since five years ago.
All 16 indicators of the health impacts of a warming world are worsening, the Lancet Countdown report shows. “Climate change-caused shocks are claiming lives, damaging health and disturbing livelihoods in all parts of the world right now. That means no continent or community remains untouched,” says Ian Hamilton at University College London.
The report found that between 2000 and 2018, the number of heat-related deaths each year in people aged over 65 jumped by almost 54 percent to 296,000 globally. Most were in Japan, China, India and Europe.
More than half of 196 countries saw an increase in the risk of people exposed to wildfires between 2016-2019, compared with 2001 — 2004. Based on areas rather than people, Australia saw one of the biggest increases in wildfire risk between the same periods.
Due to the greenhouse gas-intensive (气体密集的) nature of beef production, the researchers also looked at the health impacts of eating it. They found deaths from excess red meat consumption hit 990,000 in 2017, up 72 percent since 1990.
The team behind the report urged governments to make sure the carbon-cutting plans they submit to the United Nations ahead of the COP26 climate top next year-known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) — are not just obvious, but factor in health.“At the moment health is not featuring among the NDCs in the way that it needs to,” says Hamilton.
32.What’s the effect of climate change?
A.It greatly affected people’s livelihood.
B.It made great differences to plant growth.
C.It hurt developing countries more seriously.
D.Only a small number of countries escaped it.
33.Who is the major victim of high temperature?
A.The elderly.
B.The youth.
C.People from Australia.
D.People around the equator.
34.Why does the greenhouse gas-intensive nature of beef production bring harm to people?
A.People suffer from extreme climates.
B.People who eat too much red meat may die.
C.People can’t get enough rest as usual.
D.People have fewer animals than ever before.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.People’s efforts to the environment have paid off.
B.Carbon-cutting plans haven’t been put into practice.
C.NDCs hasn’t clearly indicated Carbon-cutting plans.
D.Further efforts are needed about Carbon-cutting plans.

Tiffany’s difficulties began last year when she had guests at her home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Her husband had been in medical school and was now in the second year of his medical residency. Because of the long work hours required of him, he was not able to help her as much as they both would have liked, and so most of that which needed to be accomplished during this holiday season, in addition to the care of their four young children, fell to Tiffany. She was becoming overwhelmed, and then she learned that one who was dear to her had been diagnosed with cancer. The stress and worry began to take a heavy burden on her, and she slipped into a period of discouragement and depression. She sought medical help, and yet nothing changed. Her appetite disappeared, and she began to lose weight. Her family and friends prayed for her and tried desperately to help. They delivered her favorite foods in an attempt to keep her physically healthy, but she could take only a few bites and then would be unable to finish.
On one particularly trying day, her husband attempted in vain to persuade her with foods she had always loved. When nothing worked, he said, “There must be something that sounds good to you.”
Tiffany thought for a moment and said, “The only thing I can think of that sounds good is homemade bread.”
But there was none on hand.
The following afternoon Tiffany’s doorbell rang. Her husband happened to be home and answered it. When he returned, he was carrying a loaf of homemade bread. Tiffany was astonished when he told her it had come from a woman named Sherrie, whom they barely knew. She was a friend of Tiffany’s sister Nicole and had been introduced to Tiffany and her husband briefly several months earlier when Nicole and her family were staying with Tiffany for Thanksgiving. Days later, Tiffany began to regain her appetite and feel hopeful about the future and she owed it to that loaf of bread from Sherrie.
Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks.

M: Sixteen hours.
W: You’ll be too tired. The plane only takes two and a half hours.
M: Mom, planes are bad for the environment. They will add to global warming.
W: But they are convenient.
M: We should put the planet before our own comfort.
W: That’s fine. Can I pay for your train ticket then?
M: Okay, but I’ll have to hang up now and call the ticket office. My friend says they are selling out fast.
W: Hold on, I think your sister wants to talk to you.
M: Tell her I’ll ring her back when I’ve sorted out my ticket.
W: Okay, goodbye then.

The boy ran home quickly and used some old boxes to make a simple home for the dog. He went out to the dog and set it up, and the dog quickly went inside to hide from the rain. A week later, the boy was walking home when a huge snowstorm suddenly started. He couldn’t see the roads clearly because too much snow was falling. But then he heard some barking.
A.Her love for dogs. B.Her clothes-making skills.
C.The joy of receiving gifts. D.Grandma’s suggestion.
25.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Christmas gifts. B.Pet owners.
C.Dogs and cats. D.Lovely bandannas.
26.Why does Maria give decorations to shelters?
A.To make herself known to more people.
B.To protect dogs and cats from the cold.
C.To attract more people to take in the animals.
D.To help rescue homeless dogs in the streets.
27.What is Crystal's attitude to Maria's behavior?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful.
C.Mixed. D.Worried.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第四段“After mastering the basics, an idea came to her mind during a visit to a local exhibition.Surrounded by pet owners and their pets, Maria had an idea that would change lives. Why not create lovely bandannas (头巾) for dogs and cats and use them to support animal shelters?”(掌握了基本知识后,在参观当地的一个展览时,她想到了一个主意。 以及最后一段中““It makes me happy to see how it’s impacted the people and dogs.””(“看到它对人们和狗的影响,我很高兴。”) 故选A项。
根据划线单词句中“Why not create lovely bandannas for dogs and cats…”(为什么不为狗和猫制作可爱的大手帕……)
根据第六段“But Maria’s wish went far beyond creating decorations. She began donating her works to shelters like Claws Forever in Fall River, hoping to catch the eye of some people who can take these dogs and cats home.”(但玛丽亚的愿望远不止制作装饰品。
根据倒数第二段中“Then she got more skilled and was able to buy cloth with some extra income that she was making from it,” her mom, Crystal, said. “Maria is a really kind giving person and she doesn’t want for much of anything.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.D 31.A
28 C 根据题干定位到第2段“... with the total number of droplets generated by flushing in each test ranging up to the tens of thousands” 可知这里语义为冲水测试中被怎么出来的飞沫,结合语义,应为“产生,制造”的意思,故答案是C。
29 B 根据题干定位到第6段“a 209% increase for particles(颗粒) sized 0.5 to 1 micrometer”可知答案是B。
30 D 根据题干定位到最后一段“combination of enough ventilation in the design and construction of public spaces would help prevent aerosol accumulation in closed areas such as public restrooms”可知答案是D。
31 A 根据文章首段“If you're in a public restroom, you may not want to hang around too long, because lots of airborne pathogens(病菌) are hanging around, too.”
【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.D
根据第一段中的“The impacts of climate change on people’s health around the world, including deaths due to heatwaves and the consequences of food insecurity, have become a big concern since five years ago. (自五年前以来,气候变化对世界各地人民健康的影响,包括热浪造成的死亡和粮食不安全的后果,已成为人们关注的一大问题。)”可知气候变化严重影响了全世界人们的健康,生存和粮食安全,也就是说,气候变化严重影响了全世界人们的生计。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“The report found that between 2000 and 2018, the number of heat-related deaths each year in people aged over 65 jumped by almost 54 percent to 296,000 globally. (该报告发现,在2000年至2018年期间,全球65岁以上人群每年与热有关的死亡人数激增近54%,达到296000人。)”可知老年人是高温的主要受害者。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“They found deaths from excess red meat consumption hit 990,000 in 2017, up 72 percent since 1990. (他们发现,2017年过量食用红肉导致的死亡人数达到99万人,自1990年以来增长了72%。)”可知,因为过量食用红肉而死亡的人数增加了,所以过量食用红肉可能会导致人死亡。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。由文章最后一段“The team behind the report urged governments to make sure the carbon-cutting plans they submit to the United Nations ahead of the COP26 climate top next year-known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) —are not just obvious, but factor in health.“At the moment health is not featuring among the NDCs in the way that it needs to,” says Hamilton.

The woman bringing Mandarin to Uganda
Wang Lihong Sooma, who moved to East Africa from China more than two decades ago, is determined to teach Ugandans how to speak Mandarin(普通话). 36 The first 30 teachers have now completed their training and have started holding Mandarin classes in schools across the country.
Forty more teachers are now enrolled (入学) and classes start at 8:00 and finish at 22:00 from Monday to Friday. 37 However, Pavin Mulokwa, a teacher from Mbarara, sees it as an opportunity to broaden her job prospects. Another trainee, Praise Twebaze, agrees and hopes it will enable him to travel too.
38 Gao Yahui, who has been teaching Mandarin in Uganda for a year, says it has changed her understanding of Africa. From Xi’an city in central China, the 39-year-old left her husband and child behind to come and teach but was warned by her family and friends not to because of “diseases and war”. “ 39 When I go back to China, I will introduce the real Africa to the people in China and change their way of looking at Africa.”
Wang’s goal is to have 100 teachers trained up and teaching Mandarin in 60 Ugandan schools by 2023. She sees it as a win-win situation, giving the example of how Chinese have benefited from learning English. “ 40 We learnt their technology and skills and then we developed.”
A.They learn our language.
B.I just think in the same way.
C.We learned their language and we understood them.
D.When I came here, it changed my fixed ideas about African people.
E.It is not just Ugandans who see this course as a life-changing opportunity.
F.She and her husband are organizing nine-month courses for teachers to learn Mandarin.
G.To become fluent and be able to teach a language within nine months is a huge undertaking.
36.根据该空上一句“Wang Lihong Sooma, who moved to East Africa from China more than two decades ago, is determined to teach Ugandans how to speak Mandarin(普通话).( 20多年前从中国移居东非的王丽红·索玛(Wang Lihong Sooma)决心教乌干达人说普通话。)”和下文“The first 30 teachers have now completed their training and have started holding Mandarin classes in schools across the country.(首批30名教师现已完成培训,并开始在全国各地的学校开设普通话课程。)”
根据下文“However, Pavin Mulokwa, a teacher from Mbarara, sees it as an opportunity to broaden her job prospects. Another trainee, Praise Twebaze, agrees and hopes it will enable him to travel too.(然而,来自姆巴拉拉的教师Pavin Mulokwa认为这是一个拓宽自己就业前景的机会。另一位学员普雷兹·特韦伯兹对此表示赞同,并希望这也能让他去旅行。)”可知,乌干达的一名教师把学习汉语看成是拓展职业前景的机遇。G项“要在9个月内掌握一门流利的语言并能够教授它是一项艰巨的任务。”提到在九个月内学会汉语是一项艰巨的任务,符合此处语境。故选G项。
38.该空承上启下。根据下文“Gao Yahui, who has been teaching Mandarin in Uganda for a year, says it has changed her understanding of Africa.(在乌干达教汉语已有一年的高雅慧(音译)表示,这改变了她对非洲的理解。)”
39.根据该空前“From Xi’an city in central China, the 39-year-old left her husband and child behind to come and teach but was warned by her family and friends not to because of “diseases and war”.(来自中国中部城市西安,39岁的她离开丈夫和孩子来这里教书,但她的家人和朋友警告她不要来,因为“疾病和战争”。)”的was warned by her family and friends not to because of “diseases and war”和该空后的“When I go back to China, I will introduce the real Africa to the people in China and change their way of looking at Africa.”(当我回到中国时,我要把真实的非洲介绍给中国人民,改变他们对非洲的看法。”)”
根据上句“She sees it as a win-win situation, giving the example of how Chinese have benefited from learning English.(她认为这是一个双赢的局面,并举了中国人如何从学习英语中受益的例子。)”

Besides, mobile payments are lightning-fast compared to traditional payment methods. You can pay for your purchases swiftly, reducing waiting times at checkout counters.
