B After watching her father struggle with pain and other health issues for years before he was diagnosed(诊断)with two tick-borne(蜱传播)illnesses,Muriel Metko,a biology graduate in University Of Wisconsin Eau Claire (UWEC), knew she wanted a career in medicine. Metko also knew, with its strong biology program,UWEC would give her the foundation and guidance she needed to pursue her dreams of studying medicine and specializing in infectious disease. As she prepares to graduate, her plans still include medical school, but thanks to a newly discovered passion for research, she also now plans to earn a doctorate along with her medical degree. Thus she can practice medicine and engage in research. During her second year in college, Dr. Phillips, professor of chemistry, asked her to join his research team. She enjoyed it so much that when that first project ended, she joined Dr. Dahl's chemistry lab. As a student researcher, Metko has presented their research at a national conference and is working with Dahl on an academic paper for publication. Last summer,Metko worked in Mayo Clinic, where she watched clinicians and researchers cooperate to develop the best diagnostic tools and treatment plans for patients. Her experience here solidified her future career path. “Prior to going to Mayo Clinic, this was just a career I had read about,” Metko says of physician-researchers. “I'd met medical doctors and Ph.D.s,but never someone who was both. Here were living examples of such people, who practiced medicine and spent time in their lab advancing the field, doing exactly what I want to do.” Bright as her future is Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues, but with a positive attitude to life, she's actively received treatment and got through. “With a major in biology and two minors in chemistry and pre-professional health sciences, all the courses taken at UWEC have given me a solid foundation to pursue graduate studies and earn my M.D.- Ph.D.,"Metko says. 24. What contributed to Metko's initial idea to pursue a medical career? A. Her desire to become the breadwinner of her family. B. Her university's latest education-aid program. C Her poor living conditions in childhood. D. Her father's sufferings from diseases. 25. How was Metko's love for research inspired? A. Through hands-on engagement in a project. B. Through frequent class interaction activities. C. Through her professor's specific guidance. D. Through her required courses in college. 26. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?. A. Serving as a clinician. B. Working in Mayo Clinic. C. Acting as a doctor and researcher. D. Developing efficient medicines. 27. Which of the following best describes Metko? A. Ambitious and optimistic. B. Humorous and courageous. C. Generous and sensitive. D. Talented and demanding. C The general understanding of slow fashion is that it is sustainable (可持续的) fashion with a slightly different focus-speed. In 2007, when author Kate Fletcher coined the term “slow fashion”, she called on consumers, designers and brands to slow down and care about quality. Natural clothing materials and low-impact manufacturing (制造) are large parts of the sustainable fashion movement. This movement has invited a closer look into what sustainability looks like and how a change in thinking and practices could influence the fashion industry. Slow fashion is considered to be a continuation of sustainable fashion. Today, it is distinguished by quality, locally manufactured clothing, producing clothes on a smaller scale and with slower production times. Mindfulness is paid to workers, the environment, and cultural connections. Slow fashion was a reaction to the rapid development of the fast fashion industry, which focuses on cheap, stylish, mass-produced clothes that have a huge impact on the environment. People had begun to notice the instability of the fast fashion model—from the employment of workers to pollution. However, fashion isn’t always like this, and slow fashion aims to take us back to where it began, even before the Industrial Revolution. When Kate first described slow fashion, she wanted it to focus on quality instead of quantity, in addition to the environmental ideals that were associated with sustainable fashion. Though Kate presented slow fashion as an opportunity to create an effective relationship between designer, production and consumer, it has developed over time to function even more. No longer is slow fashion only a theory on connection and better products; now, it includes consumer lifestyles and ethical production. As consumers learn more about the troublesome practices within the fashion industry, the circles of sustainability are growing closer. Social media has only helped slow fashion brands reach more consumers. Adopting a slow-fashion way of living may seem frightening if consumers are new to the movement; however, it doesn’t have to be difficult. 28. What does sustainable fashion mainly focus on? A. The lifestyle of the workers. B. The thinking of the fashion styles. C. The science of choosing clothing materials. D. The environmental influence of the fashion industry. 29. What is the disadvantage of the fast fashion industry? A. It produces clothes of low quality. B. It has a lot of instable influence on society. C. It encourages producers to earn the most profit. D. It changes the basic function of the fashion industry. 30. What did Kate say about slow fashion in the text? A. It was quality-based and eco-friendly. B. It was multi-functional and productive. C. It was aimed to balance nature and human. D. It was effective to change consumer lifestyles. 31. Which of the following is suggested in the text? A. Looking at the key factors of fashion industry. B. Paying attention to workers’ working conditions. C. Practicing the styles of the fast and slow fashion. D. Involving more people in the slow fashion movement. D The cold, wet weather of winter often puts out any wildfires that are still burning, but not in the far North areas, such as Alaska, Canada, and other parts of North America. Some forest fires just don’t die in these places. Think of the fires as “zombies” (僵尸): Scientists do. When summers are warmer than normal, some fires can hide through the winter. They burn dead plant matter and soils under snow. In May 2021, scientists reported their work to a scientific journal. The scientists saw that zombie fires are rare but they could become more common as the world warms, the study warns. “Some years, new fires were starting very close to the previous year’s fire,” explains Rebecca Scholten. She studies Earth and environmental sciences at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The new fires made scientists wonder how often fires might survive the winter. The scientists started by combing through firefighter reports. Then they compared these with satellite images of Alaska and northern Canada. The scientists looked for fires that began close to fires from the year before. They also focused on blazes starting before the middle of summer. Random lightning or human actions spark most fires in the area, Scholten says. But those fires happen later in the year. Zombie fires accounted for less than 1 percent of the total area burned by fires from 2002 to 2018. But it changed from year to year. Take 2008, for example. A zombie fire burned Alaska that year. It caused almost one-third of fire damage that year. One clear pattern emerged: Zombie fires were more likely to happen after very warm summers. High temperatures may allow fires to reach more deeply into the soil. Such deep burns are more likely to survive to spring. The zombie fire threat could grow. The climate is warming. Forests in the far North already are warming faster. “We’re seeing more hot summers and more large fires and intense burning,” Scholten says. Plus, zombie fires could cause more issues. The fires release huge amounts of greenhouse gases. These trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround the Earth. Scholten’s research could help fire management. Firefighters would know to check for them after warm summers. 32. What may lead to zombie fires according to the passage? A. wet weather B. hotter summers C. low temperatures D. cold winters 33. What can we learn about zombie fires from Paragraph 2? A. Where flames broke out provided the clue. B. Changing climate plays a role in the zombie fire threat. C. Zombie fires are less likely to happen after very warm summers. D. It is of little use comparing firefighter reports with satellite images. 34. What conclusion will be possibly made based on the last paragraph? A. It is important to understand zombie fires. B. Zombie fires are likely to be under control soon. C. Firefighters cannot do much to stop the zombie fires. D. We still have much to learn about the warming climate. 35. Which of the following could be the suitable title of the passage? A. “Zombie“ wildfires do great damage to land B. “Zombie” wildfires release greenhouse gases C. “Zombie“ wildfires sparked by human actions D. “Zombie” wildfires reappear after wintering underground 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Public Speaking Public speaking can be defined as the act of making a speech in front of a group of listeners. The types of public speaking are deliberately structured with three general purposes: to inform, to persuade and to entertain. An informative speech has a purpose to inform, or give knowledge to its audience. ___36___For persuasive speech, the speaker would try to change the mindset, perception, or behavior of the audience for their own good. Thus, the speaker needs to look for common ground with the audience and try to relate to what they might agree on. The last type is a ceremonial speech. No matter how well you know the person you are giving speech about, try not to say bad things about them, even if it is meant to be a joke. ___37___Sparing some time to practice will help build confidence and help determine how long the presentation will last. Aside from it, knowing who the audience will be is quite necessary. Try to get as much information as possible regarding this particular area related to the audience. Knowing the “battlefield” in advance will give the speakers a huge advantage. Language is the main aspect a speaker needs to pay attention to while giving a speech. ___38___A speaker needs to choose their words carefully and make it clear to the audience what they mean. Often, when given a speech, the audience look up to the speaker to give them something new and useful. ___39___Language and delivery alone will not be sufficient if the speaker does not have the body language. The movement and gesture of a speaker also affect the audience. While closing the speech or presentation, speakers can restate their main points, just to remind the audience of the important things that have been said. ___40___ A. It needs to be used clearly. B. These speeches mark special occasions. C. The important thing to watch about is not to put in too much information. D. The key of perfecting anything is through practice, including public speaking. E. They can also end it with a special message and encourage the audience to ask questions. F. Knowing how public speaking is done is a key part in understanding the importance of it. G. She was born in August and her name is Aida. Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly, She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf. I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts. There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold. Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging time, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses. It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me by saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150词左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语己为你写好。 Paragraph 1: I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 临江中学高三(上)11月月考试卷 英语 注意事项: 1. What does the man always do on Saturday? But one company in the US is going to make your traditional wallets cool again, by bringing them into the digital age. Armenian firm Volterman’s Smart Wallet takes security to a new level. It’s fitted with different technology. In a smart wallet, there is an alarm, a GPS tracker, and even a camera. If your phone and wallet become separated, the alarm will warn you so that you don’t leave it behind. And if your wallet is lost or stolen, the GPS tracker can help you reach it. But perhaps the most unusual feature of the Volterman Smart Wallet is the built-in front-facing camera. “If someone dares to open your wallet without your permission, the little camera will take a picture and send it to your mobile phone,” the founder said. Once your wallet is stolen, you will find it easily by receiving the picture of the thief. The Volterman is really the world’s most powerful smart wallet. It’s also lightweight and thin, making it perfect for travel. No more international roaming charges (漫游费). Also, it works wirelessly. Here were living examples of such people, who practiced medicine and spent time in their lab advancing the field, doing exactly what I want to do.” Bright as her future is, Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues, but with a positive attitude to life, she's actively received treatment and got through. C. Her poor living conditions in childhood. 【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. A 【解析】 【分析】本文是记叙文。本文讲述Metko从医的经历,介绍了她从事医学的初衷,学习经历等等。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段的内容可知,看着父亲在疼痛和其他健康问题上挣扎多年,然后被诊断为蜱传播疾病,Muriel Metko知道自己想从事医学事业。因此看到父亲遭受疾病的折磨促使Muriel Metko有了追求医疗事业的最初想法。故选D。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的“During her second year in college, Dr. Phillips, professor of chemistry, asked her to join his research team. She enjoyed it so much that when that first project ended, she joined Dr. Dahl's chemistry lab.(在她大学的第二年,化学教授菲利普斯博士要求她加入他的研究团队。她非常喜欢它,以至于当第一个项目结束时,她加入了达尔博士的化学实验室)”可推断,通过亲身参加项目,Metko对于研究受到鼓舞,加入了达尔博士的实验室。故选A。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段的“ “Prior to going to Mayo Clinic, this was just a career I had read about,” Metko says of physician-researchers. “I'd met medical doctors and Ph.D.s, but never someone who was both. (“在去梅奥诊所之前,这是我知道的事业”,梅特科说到了医生—研究员。“我见过医生和博士,但从来没见过两个都是的人”)”可知,this指代“physician-researchers”,也就是既是医生也是研究员的人。故选C。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Metko also knew, with its strong biology program, UWEC would give her the foundation and guidance she needed to pursue her dreams of studying medicine and specializing in infectious disease.(梅特科也知道,凭借其强大的生物学项目,UWEC将为她提供基础和指导,以实现她学习医学和专门研究传染病的梦想)”可推断,Metko是一个有抱负的人,再根据最后一段的“Bright as her future is, Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues, but with a positive attitude to life, she's actively received treatment and got through.(虽然她的未来是光明的,梅特科克服了许多挑战,如无尽的健康问题,但以积极的生活态度,她积极接受治疗并克服这些困难)”可推断,Metko是一个积极乐观的人。故选A。 C The general understanding of slow fashion is that it is sustainable (可持续的) fashion with a slightly different focus-speed. 28 What does sustainable fashion mainly focus on? 【答案】28. D 29. B 30. A 31. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了慢时尚的概念,作为可持续时尚的一种延续,强调质量、本地制造、小规模生产和环保理念,旨在应对快时尚行业的弊端,通过社交媒体传播,鼓励消费者采用慢时尚生活方式。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Natural clothing materials and low-impact manufacturing (制造) are large parts of the sustainable fashion movement. (天然服装材料和低冲击制造是可持续时尚运动的重要组成部分。)”可知,可持续时尚主要关注的是使用天然服装材料和低影响的制造方式,这主要是为了减少对环境的影响。因此,可持续时尚主要关注的是时尚产业对环境的影响。故选D项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“People had begun to notice the instability of the fast fashion model—from the employment of workers to pollution. (人们已经开始注意到快时尚模式的不稳定性——从雇佣工人到污染。)”可知,快时尚行业的一个缺点是它对社会有很多不稳定的影响,包括工人就业和环境污染等方面。故选B项。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“When Kate first described slow fashion, she wanted it to focus on quality instead of quantity, in addition to the environmental ideals that were associated with sustainable fashion. (当凯特第一次描述慢时尚时,她希望它除了与可持续时尚相关的环境理想外,还关注质量而不是数量。)”可知,凯特认为慢时尚是以质量为基础且环保的。故选A项。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“Social media has only helped slow fashion brands reach more consumers. Adopting a slow-fashion way of living may seem frightening if consumers are new to the movement; however, it doesn’t have to be difficult. (社交媒体只会帮助慢时尚品牌接触到更多的消费者。如果消费者是这场运动的新手,那么采用慢时尚的生活方式可能看起来很可怕;然而,这并不一定很难。)”可知,社交媒体帮助慢时尚品牌接触到更多的消费者,作者指出采用慢时尚的生活方式并不一定很难,这暗示了文章是建议让更多的人参与到慢时尚运动中来。故选D项。 D The cold, wet weather of winter often puts out any wildfires that are still burning, but not in the far North areas, such as Alaska, Canada, and other parts of North America. “Zombie” wildfires reappear after wintering underground 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. A 35. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章解释了什么是“僵尸火”、“僵尸火”发生的原因及其危害等。 【32题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段的“Some forest fires just don’t die in these places. Think of the fires as “zombies” (僵尸): Scientists do. When summers are warmer than normal, some fires can hide through the winter.(在这些地方,有些森林火灾是不会熄灭的。把火灾想象成“僵尸”:科学家就是这样认为的。当夏天比平常温暖时,一些火灾可以隐藏整个冬天。)”可知,热的夏天可能会导致僵尸火灾。故选B。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段的“Some years, new fires were starting very close to the previous year’s fire(有些年份,新的火灾发生的地点与前一年的火灾非常接近)”和“The scientists looked for fires that began close to fires from the year before.(科学家们寻找的是前一年附近发生的火灾。)”可知,火灾发生的地点提供了僵尸火灾的线索。故选A。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“Plus, zombie fires could cause more issues. The fires release huge amounts of greenhouse gases. These trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround the Earth. Scholten’s research could help fire management. Firefighters would know to check for them after warm summers.(另外,僵尸火灾可能会引发更多问题。大火释放出大量的温室气体。它们将热量困在地球大气中。大气层是环绕地球的一层气体。Scholten的研究可能有助于火灾管理。在温暖的夏天之后,消防员会知道要检查它们。)”可知,根据最后一段可能得出的结论是了解僵尸火灾很重要。故选A。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Think of the fires as “zombies” (僵尸): Scientists do. When summers are warmer than normal, some fires can hide through the winter. They burn dead plant matter and soils under snow. In May 2021, scientists reported their work to a scientific journal. The scientists saw that zombie fires are rare but they could become more common as the world warms, the study warns.(把火灾想象成“僵尸”:科学家就是这样认为的。 Public Speaking Public speaking can be defined as the act of making a speech in front of a group of listeners. It tends to be less formal and more personal than the other types of speeches. G. Thus, the speaker needs to know how to deliver their speech to fulfill the audience‟s expectation. 【答案】36. C 37. D 38. A 39. G 40. E 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文,短文介绍了公共演讲类型的目的以及成就完美演讲所注意的几点技巧。 【36题详解】 由第二段“ An informative speech has a purpose to inform, or give knowledge to its audience”可知,一篇内容丰富的演讲有一个目的,就是向听众提供信息或传授知识。所以小题1要告诉读者要注意什么。故C选项“重要的是要注意不要输入太多的信息”符合句意。故C选项切题。 【37题详解】 由第三段“Sparing some time to practice will help build confidence and help determine how long the presentation will last. Aside from it, knowing who the audience will be is quite necessary. Try to get as much information as possible regarding this particular area related to the audience. Knowing the “battlefield” in advance will give the speakers a huge advantage”可知,抽出时间练习将有助于建立信心,并有助于确定演讲的持续时间。除此之外,知道观众是谁是非常必要的。应该尽可能多地了解与观众有关的特定领域的信息。提前了解“战场”将给演讲者带来巨大的优势。所以本段主要再告诉读者“完善一切的关键在于实践,包括公开演讲”也就是小题2所要说明的内容。故D选项“完善一切的关键在于实践,包括公开演讲”符合句意。故D选项切题。 【38题详解】 由第四段“A speaker needs to choose their words carefully and make it clear to the audience what they mean.”可知,一个演讲者需要仔细选择他们讲的话,让观众明白他们的意思。所以小题3要起到承接下文的作用说明“它需要被清楚地使用”。故A选项“它需要被清楚地使用”符合句意。故A选项切题。 【39题详解】 由第四段“Often, when given a speech, the audience look up to the speaker to give them something new and useful.”可知,通常,当演讲时,听众会抬头仰望演讲者,希望他能给他们一些新的有用的东西。所以小题4要说明当听众会抬头仰望演讲者,希望他能给他们一些新的有用的东西。这时演讲者应该知道怎么去做。故G选项“因此,演讲者需要知道如何发表他们的演讲来满足听众的期望”符合句意。故G选项切题。 【40题详解】 由第四段“While closing the speech or presentation, speakers can restate their main points, just to remind the audience of the important things that have been said”可知,在结束演讲或陈述时,演讲者可以重述他们的要点,只是为了提醒听众已经说过的重要事情。所以小题5要与前一句一同说明,在结束演讲时可以什么样的形式结束。故E选项“他们也可以用特别的信息来结束演讲,并鼓励听众提问”符合句意。故E选项切题。 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15 小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Debra Ferrell got the standard well wishes on Facebook on her 53rd birthday, but she got some _____41_____ messages too. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck. David’s face lit up with joy. Stroking the scarf softly, David excitedly kissed me in the check, beaming at me “Thank you. Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received.” Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Jane with a spring in his steps. I felt relieved and content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone-chilling wind. Wearing a smile on my face, I continued my chores that morning. Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Jane could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift?” David ventured in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane’s house with the scarf in his hand, I felt a burst of pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane, a scarf to keep warm, and for David, a taste of happiness of giving. 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲出去:dash out/rush out ②忍受:bear/endure ③送礼物:give sb. sth. as a gift/present sb. with sth. 情绪类 ①兴奋:excitedly/feverishly ②满足:content/satisfied 【点睛】[高分句型1] Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Jane with a spring in his steps.
