Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for living. One night, I took a fare (出租车乘客) at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, sanding on the side way was a small woman in her 80s with a big suitcase.
After I helped her into the taxi she gave me an address and asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It is not the shortest way,” I answered quickly. “I don’t mind,” She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I looked in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off he meter (计价器). “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house, where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At last, she said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the destination. It was a grey low building.
“How much do I owe you?” She asked, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I said. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held on to me tightly and whispered a “Thank you”. I squeezed her hand and walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I didn’t pick up any more passengers, but drove aimlessly, lost in thought. What if that woman had come across an impatient driver? What if I had refused to drive through downtown? Great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly refused me. “I’m not sporty; stop trying to get me to do sports,” Julianna said. I had suggested it because some of my happiest recent memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to work out some of her growing pains on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always refused by her.
Still, I was undeterred. I believed that doing some sports would help Julianna manage her emotions. I’ve seen how sports help with stress. It worked for me when I was a teenage girl.
Midway into summer, we stayed at home, and Julianna and I felt really bored. “Do you want to play tennis?” I asked her at lunch one afternoon. Sure, she said. At that time, we were both eager to spend as much time as possible out of the house.
Arriving at the court, we set down our bags, picked up our rackets (球拍), and headed to our sides of the court. The net was like the growing divide between us — I desiring connection and my teenage daughter longing for independence.
I started by hitting a ball over the net, and Julianna took a big swing and missed. We repeated this several more times. I didn’t tell her she was holding the racket too close to the neck or she should step more into her forehand. My daughter wanted the chance to figure these things out for herself. We repeated the pattern of me hitting the ball and her missing it a few times before she finally got it back over the net. “This is fun,” she said with a mixture of surprise and delight and then she smiled widely.
Now we always find time to play tennis. We’re both eager for an activity that can ease tensions between us in daily life. It’s nice to have a place where both of us can release our negative moods and let them go.
24.Why did the author persuade her daughter to play tennis?

C.It would help her daughter make more like-minded friends.
D.It would be good for her daughter’s emotional management.
25.What does the underlined word “undeterred” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Not dishonest. B.Not sure. C.Not discouraged. D.Not surprised.
26.What did the author do when her daughter missed the ball?
A.She stood close to the net. B.She repeated hitting the ball.
C.She changed ends with her daughter. D.She instructed her daughter immediately.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mom Coaches Teen Daughter in Tennis
B.Mom Helps Teen Daughter Express Her Emotions
C.Mom Encourages Teen Daughter to Be Independent
D.Mom and Teen Daughter Find Some Peace on the Tennis Court

Sometimes we fail to give enough attention to the heroes closest to us. That was the case with my family. My family knew my father had been a WWII soldier. But because he didn’t discuss his experience, we didn’t dig too deeply.
We lost him this past Christmas and when sorting out (整理) his things at home, we discovered what a truly great hero he was. He was once in college and majored in engineering. At the beginning of the war, he was drafted into the army, responding to the call. Just a few years later, he honorably left the army and returned home. He had also been awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
How I wish we had taken the time to learn more about his stories in the war! He would have answered questions if we had done a little research and known what to ask. Fortunately, there was one family member who took time to do just that. This cousin was interested in WWII. And he researched the areas where my father served. We now know a small part of my father’s story from this cousin. We learned that the Silver Star Medal was awarded to my father because he carried a wounded soldier to safety through a minefield (布雷区). And he was once in several well-known fights.
This year, Memorial Day has a deeper meaning for my family because we have known more about my father’s service in the army. Many activities were held by my family in memory of my father. We’re also grateful to that cousin who took the time to find out more.
I hope you can do the same while your heroes are still with you. Find out as much as you can. Even if they don’t like to talk about their experiences and sacrifices (牺牲), chances are that they’ll answer direct questions if you do a little digging. You’ll be richly rewarded with a family story for generations to come.

A.he organized his father’s things left
B.his cousin told him his father’s story
C.they spent the past Christmas together

A.By killing enemies in a minefield.
B.By keeping details in battles secret.
C.By saving a soldier from real danger.
D.By taking part in some famous fights.
6.Which of the following can best describe the author’s father?
A.Active and easygoing. B.Helpful and proud.
C.Fearless and talkative. D.Brave and modest.
7.What does the author suggest we do in the last paragraph?
A.Share family stories with children.

C.Show respect for national heroes.
D.Be grateful to those helping us.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to restrain (限定, 限制) her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower—however faultily—like that.
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrong placed in “beautiful” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t pretty. It’s beautiful.
8.What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten?
A.The author’s unwillingness to go to school.
B.The teacher’s terrible attitude to the author.
C.The teacher’s ignorance of the author’s mistakes.
D.The author’s failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
9.What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Reduce. B.Gain. C.Awaken. D.Inspire.
10.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A.The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
B.The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C.The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
D.The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
11.Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White?
A.Generous and kind. B.Enthusiastic and careful.
C.Honest and brave. D.Far-sighted and tolerant.

As a mother and a professional working full time, I spent all of my 30s saying yes. Saying yes to things I wanted to do, but a lot of the time saying yes to things I disliked. This was a people-pleasing technique that would affect people’s opinion of me: the woman who could do it all, so that I can obtain a nice fame in their mind.
Little did I know that I was also developing an autoimmune(自身免疫的) disease, which I have to believe was my body’s way of telling me to slow down. I had severely swollen joints and brain fog but I pushed through so that I could look in the mirror at the end of the day and feel “accomplished”. The only things I was accomplishing were bad health and bed habits.
And then a series of events changed everything: serious medical issues and losing my job. It took all that to help me see how intensely burnt out I was. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I had to be next instead of being present in the moment. But now, I wake up each day knowing that everything on my schedule has been purposefully agreed to.
Looking back, I had the capability to suffer the pressure to say yes. I also felt it necessary to say yes, from driving people to the airport to seeing family every Friday night. I always wanted to solve everyone’s problems and offered sound and immediate solutions. It was one big “yes” to everything.
I was everyone’s cheerleader, but forgot how to cheer for myself along the way. But saying no is being my own cheerleader. And it’s not saying no to caring for family and friends. Instead, it’s a minor change in mindset, taking a pause before automatically agreeing. I take a breath, do a quick count of my energy and ability before jumping in.
8.Why did the author say yes to things she disliked?
A.To please her boss. B.To prove her profession.
C.To push herself to the limit. D.To earn herself a good reputation.
9.How did the author deal with the changes in her body?
A.She got rid of bad habits. B.She thought little of them.
C.She slowed down her life pace. D.She paid more attention to her health.
10.Which word can best describe the author?
A.Purposeful. B.Stubborn. C.Reflective. D.Encouraging.
11.What will the author do before saying yes?
A.Find a cheerleader. B.Evaluate her situation.
C.Breathe in some fresh air. D.Seek help from her friends.

Rollins College’s graduate, Elizabeth Bonker gave a powerful speech at the school’s graduation ceremony using text-to-speech technology. “You have a voice. Use it,” she advised graduates. It seems funny that a non-speaking autistic (孤独症患者) encourages you to use your voice. However, her moving speech touched not only her fellow classmates but also the worldwide audience with a powerful message of hope.
Throughout her academic career, Elizabeth has studied hard to reach her goals at school and in life. She wrote a book, I Am in Here, which highlights the abilities of people like her with non-speaking autism. She also founded a non-profit organization called Communication 4 All.

Dr. Bhuvana, a special educator and therapist, once taught at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. During her classes, she observed that some students did not absorb the content as well as others or lacked understanding of specific topics. At times, they nodded their head but they did not actually grasp the meaning. She realized she needed to make a change instead of just sticking to the traditional teaching methods. Parents were impressed by the improvements in their slow pupils and suggested Dr. Bhuvana start a special school for such children.
Dr. Bhuvana came to the rescue of students with developmental disorders. In 1998, she opened Bridges Learning Vidyalaya to teach students with autism (自闭症) and other developmental disorders. I felt anxious when going into my room from school. Every day, my room was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my peaceful harbor. Today was no exception.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. But I was still doubtful about it. Yesterday, around the mouth of my favorite figurine (小雕像) was a chocolate cookie. Obviously, Callie had enjoyed the cookie so much that she wanted to share it with my angel.
I looked around for Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her, but I heard the TV blaring (发出声音) in the other room. As I examined the family room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all over the floor, but none of them seemed to be mine. Maybe she hadn't entered today. I was so hopeful that I breathed a sigh of relief.
I pushed my room door open and saw damage! There were a few headless dolls, some broken blocks, and a few juice-stained stuffed animals. “She did it again!” I screamed in anger. My mother ran up to me, embarrassed. She promised to put a Callie-proof lock on my door tonight. I felt better, because I knew that soon my room would truly belong to me. However, I was still angry with my little sister so I went into the family room to tell her how she had made life unpleasant for me. “Callie... ” I started. “Hooray!” she shouted.

In the middle of the night, a baby chimpanzee (黑猩猩) is having nightmares. Chantal, his caretaker, tries to calm him down. She works at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, in the Republic of the Congo, in Africa. The chimp’s name is George. He was taken from his mother by hunters. Finally, he was rescued and taken to the sanctuary (鸟兽保护区), where Chantal helped him make friends with other chimpanzees. “We rescue chimps from terrible conditions and help them to live in the wild like other chimpanzees,” Chantal said, “They need to learn chimp behavior.”
Chimpanzees meet a lot difficulties because people cut down forest and illegal (非法的) wildlife trade. Their population, numbering in the millions a century ago, could be down to 172,000. This makes the work of the Tchimpounga Sanctuary even more important.
When opening in 1992, Tchimpounga had space for 60 chimpanzees. It has been made larger to the size of a hundred football fields, and provide home around 150 chimps. Many live on islands with thick forest in the Kouilou River. In that environment, the chimps are prepared for a possible return to the wild. The sanctuary also works with the government to reduce illegal trade in animals. Tchimpounga’s head veterinarian (兽医) Rebeca Atencia said, “We have effectively reduced the arrival of orphan (孤儿) chimpanzees to Tchimpounga. We’ve received only one orphan chimp over the past three years.”
The chimps have shown that they understand the sanctuary staff’s efforts. “Saving the life of a chimpanzee is very gratifying,” Atencia says. “Chimpanzees know when you’re helped them or saved their life. Sometimes, they thank you with a hug.”
As the leader of Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), Atencia also works with people who live near the sanctuary. These people depend on the forest for food and building houses, and their growing population is a danger to chimps. JGI helps the people in these places get healthcare, clean water, and others. This makes them less dependent on the area’s natural resources and reduces illegal trade in chimps. At present, there are islands within the sanctuary where the chimps can be safe from wild chimpanzees and hunters. And they’ re still under the care of the sanctuary staff.
4.What happened to chimps after they were taken to the sanctuary?
A.They got together with their mothers.
B.They were trained to comfort social workers.
C.They were taught how to live a usual life.
D.They were used for scientific experiments.
5.How does Rebeca Atencia probably find the sanctuary’s work?
A.It was dangerous and cost a lot of money at first.
B.It has received lots of support.
C.It hardly saves adult chimps.
D.It is a success.
6.What does the underlined word “gratifying” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Challenging. B.Interesting. C.Pleasing. D.Tiring.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Supporting local people is good for chimp protection.
B.More efforts should be made to care for wild chimps.
C.The chimp population in the sanctuary has grown quickly.
D.People near the sanctuary depend on tourists to increase income.

Cats don’t live by the rules, and spend most of their time just doing what they want. For the cat owner Zack King, his cat Billy’s life was enigmatic. Free-spirited felines(猫类) who like to spend time outdoors are often gone for hours at a time, leaving their owners wondering where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to. However, King soon discovered that his beloved cat was serving as a “postcat”.
Billy comes and goes as he pleases through a cat door. One day in October, when Billy was inside, King noticed a folded piece of paper covered in a plastic wrap in his collar. King carefully unwrapped it and was surprised to find a note from his neighbors. “Your cat likes to come to visit us when he is outside,” it read. “He will sit at the door and run into our house. We have no idea where he comes from. He always wants people to give him lots of scratches(挠痒). What’s his name? Does he have an owner?”
King wrote a note back, attached it to Billy’s collar, and hoped it would make it to the original sender. “We’re so glad he’s making friends with the neighbors,” it read. “His name is Billy.” It wasn’t long before Billy came back with another note, and now months later, the neighbors are still pen friends. “We both like watching movies online and cooking at home,” King said. “We have no idea what the neighbors look like. We could ask for details but there’s no need—it’s nice to have some privacy sometimes.”
“I was frustrated as the nights got colder and darker. Billy is spending more time indoors and sweet exchanges have become less frequent,” he says. “To be honest, a closed door and a sensitive alarm can ensure the safety of our houses. But they can prevent neighbors from having healthy friendships. To break the ice, we just need a cat and a note.”
4.What does the underlined word “enigmatic” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Mysterious. B.Boring. C.Tough. D.Ordinary.
5.Why did King’s neighbors write a note?
A.To know the identity of the cat. B.To express his dislike of the cat.
C.To express his thanks for the cat. D.To ask King to take the cat back.
6.What can we learn from the last but one paragraph?
A.King has met with his neighbors before.
B.King hopes to thank the neighbors in person.
C.King shares common hobbies with his neighbors.
D.King has communicated with his neighbors online.
7.What does King imply in the last paragraph?
A.We should make friends with neighbors.
B.We should ensure the safety of our houses.
C.We should respect the privacy of neighbors.
D.We should keep pets to stay safe and healthy.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. He was a quiet man and he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world cither. He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
The summer before my eighth grade, I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field to get rid of weeds (杂草) with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job is a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine as I wished. My labor lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I thought it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.
The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something from my work. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and thought of his words “A job is a big step to growing up”.
I understood immediately that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard work of my parents! In university I had a part-time job at a shop that sold doughnuts and coffee. Situated on a block where several buses stopped, it served the people who had a few minutes to wait for their bus.
Every afternoon around four o’clock, a group of schoolchildren would burst into the shop, and business would come to a stop. Adults would glance in, see the crowd and pass on. But I didn’t mind if the children waited for their bus inside. Sometimes I would hand out a bus fare when a ticket went missing — always repaid the next day. On snowy days I would give away some doughnuts. I would lock the door at closing time, and we waited in the warm shop until their bus finally arrived.
I enjoyed my young friends, but it never occurred to me that I played an important role in their lives — until one afternoon when a man came and asked if l was the girl working on weekends around four o’clock. He identified himself as the father of two of my favorites.
“I want you to know I appreciate what you do for my children. I worry about them taking two buses to get home. It means a lot that they can wait here and you keep an eye on them. When they are with the doughnut lady, I know they are safe,” I told him it wasn’t a big deal, and that I enjoyed the kids.
So I was the Doughnut Lady. I not only received a title, but became a landmark.
Now I think about all the people who keep an eye on my own children. They become, well, Doughnut Ladies. Like the men at the skating rink (滑冰场) who let my boys ring home. Or the bus driver who drove my daughter to her stop at the end of the route at night but wouldn’t leave until I arrived to pick her up. Or that nice police officer who took pity on my boys walking home in the rain when I was at work — even though the phone rang all the next day with calls from curious neighbors. “Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?”
That wasn’t a police car. That was a Doughnut Lady.
4.According to the passage, the author sometimes ________ .
A.Sold bus tickets to the children. B.Did business with the children’s help.
C.Provided schoolchildren with warm shelters. D.Called the children’s parents to pick them up.
5.By saying “... it wasn’t a big deal,” (in paragraph 4) the author meant that________.
A.She hadn’t done anything very significant.
B.She hadn’t made a lot of money from the children.
C.She hadn’t spent plenty of time with the children.
D.She hadn’t found it hard to get along with the children.
6.According to the author, those who________ are Doughnut Ladies.
A.work in the doughnut store for a while B.are always ready to extend a helping hand
C.provide free doughnut store for the door D.are curious about the happenings around
7.What does the passage suggest?
A.Taking responsibility is a virtue. B.Devotion co-exists with reward.
C.Running a business requires skills. D.Acts of kindness are never too small.

My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting out, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our voice.
It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was too heavy. “I have to pull over.” Autumn said. She tried to enter the far right lane (车道) to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car was out of control, then worse — it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late. We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.
“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can’t.” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone. “There’s been an accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber’s eye. Another woman came close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way.” The woman mentioned she was a nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber’s cut was an eye specialist. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the tests at the hospital made sure we had no serious injuries. We’d left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使) in my eyes.
24.How did the author and her two daughters feel after setting out?
A.They were worried about the weather. B.They enjoyed themselves greatly.
C.They thought it was a long journey. D.They felt lucky to take the journey.
25.What’s Autumn going to do when the rain poured?
A.To stop by the roadside. B.To follow the truck closely,

27.What can be the best title for the text?

Growing up in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s, Ghuan Featherstone only remembers riding a horse with his parents at a nearby park when he was eight years old.
But ever since, he’s been chasing that sense of freedom and power he felt on the horse that day. “I felt like I could conquer anything,” Featherstone, now 51, said in a Story Corps interview last month with Jordan Humphreys, a 13-year-old horseback rider. After serving in the Army for eight years, Featherstone remained determined to realize his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy.
When he returned to Los Angeles, he learned to ride at stables known as “The Hill” in Compton. Riders there would jump on their horse backs and take their horses into the city streets. In 2012, a fire burned down The Hill. What had become a shelter for the youth was suddenly gone. Sensing the void (空缺) after the fire, Featherstone opened his own stables, Urban Saddles, in 2019 to create a space where he could teach kids like Humphreys to care for and ride horses.
As a black man, Featherstone is against prejudice. People of color are often prevented from pop culture and historical representations of the cowboy. His stable has helped keep the cowboy lifestyle alive in the streets. “Riding through the streets on horseback has given me a way to connect with others in the community,” said Humphreys. “It makes them happy seeing us on a horse and then they may be smiling, and I believe that when we come through, we give them a sense of hope,” he added.
If there’s one lesson Featherstone hopes to convey to kids, it’s a respect for all life. “We’re respecting the animals and we’re respecting each other,” he said.
32.What made Featherstone want to become a cowboy?
A.His love to his parents. B.The duty of saving the world.
C.The serving years in the army. D.His childhood riding experience.
33.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A.The life of being a cowboy.
B.The dream of being a cowboy.
C.The course of opening Urban Saddles.
D.The place of teaching kids like Humphreys.
34.Which can be one of the purposes of Fetherstone’s opening his own stables?
A.To teach the black kids to ride horses.
B.To help the kids to learn to respect all life.
C.To make money by teaching the kids to ride.
D.To train the cowboys to become more hopeful.
35.Which of the following words may best describe Fetherstone?
A.Smart but careless. B.Slow but productive.
C.Diligent and broad-minded. D.Determined and kind-hearted.

A.To find a place to settle down.
B.To reach the destination on time.
C.To kill time before the hospice opened.
D.To see the city for last time.
6.What can we learn from the story?
A.Giving is always a pleasure.
B.People should respect elderly people.
C.A small act of kindness brings people great joy.
D.Strangers are family you haven’t known yet.
7.Which of the following describe the author best?
A.Positive and energetic. B.Helping and humorous.
C.Sensitive and patient. D.Kind-hearted but demanding.

B.My strange driving experience

根据第二段中的“She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I looked in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off he meter (计价器). (她说,‘我不急。我要去临终安养院。’我看了看后视镜。她的眼睛湿润了。我悄悄地把手伸过去,关掉了计价器)”可知,这位老太太要独自一人去临终安养院,她的内心是非常悲戚的,出于对她的同情,作者关掉了计价器,想给她一些温暖。故选B。
5.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house, where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. (在接下来的两个小时里,我们开车经过了她和丈夫新婚时居住的街区。她让我在一所破旧的房子前停下,她小时候在这里跳过舞。有时她会让我在某个特定的大楼前放慢车速,然后坐着凝视着黑暗,一言不发)”可推知,老人想经过她曾经生活过的街区,重温她曾经的美好回忆,在去临终安养院前最后一次看看这座城市。故选D。
6.推理判断题。根据本文讲述的故事,尤其是最后一段最后一句“Great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. (美好的时刻往往在我们浑然不觉的时候出现,美丽地包裹在别人可能认为微不足道的事情中)”可知,作者得知这位老太太要独自一人去临终安养院默默等待生命的终止,他对她非常同情,免费带她最后看一眼充满回忆的地方,这给她带来了一些慰藉。因此,故事告诉我们哪怕是微不足道的善举也能给别人带来美妙的时刻。故选C。
7.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I looked in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off he meter (计价器). (我看了看后视镜。她的眼睛湿润了。我悄悄地把手伸过去,关掉了计价器)”可知,作者从后视镜看到老人的眼眶湿润,于是悄悄关了计价器,打算免费带她一程,这说明了作者是一个内心敏感的人,能够捕捉到别人的情绪。根据第三段中的“For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house, where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. (在接下来的两个小时里,我们开车经过了她和丈夫新婚时居住的街区。她让我在一所破旧的房子前停下,她小时候在这里跳过舞。有时她会让我在某个特定的大楼前放慢车速,然后坐着凝视着黑暗,一言不发)”可知,作者带着这位老太太慢慢地经过有她无数回忆的地方,一点也没有表现出不耐烦,由此可知,他是一个有耐心的人。故选C。
8.标题归纳题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for living. One night, I took a fare (出租车乘客) at 2:30 AM. (20年前,我以开出租车为生。一天晚上,我在凌晨两点半接了一位出租车乘客)”和最后一段中的“Great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. (美好的时刻往往在我们浑然不觉的时候出现,美丽地包裹在别人可能认为微不足道的事情中)”可知,本文主要讲述了20年前作者开出租车送一位80多岁的老太太去临终安养院的故事,这个经历非常难忘,哪怕20年过去了,作者也依然记忆犹新。由此可推测出,A项“我永远不会忘记的一次出租车之旅”最适合作本文标题。故选A。

A.Tennis was as popular as ping-pong.
B.They had a good time playing tennis together.
根据第二段中的“I believed that doing some sports would help Julianna manage her emotions. I’ve seen how sports help with stress. It worked for me when I was a teenage girl.(我相信做一些运动可以帮助朱莉安娜控制自己的情绪。我知道运动是如何缓解压力的。当我还是个小女孩的时候,这对我很有效。)”可知,作者认为进行体育运动有助于女儿管理情绪,青少年时期的作者深有体会,由此可知,作者之所以要说服女儿从事体育运动是因为她认为体育运动对她女儿的情绪管理有好处。故选D项。
25.词义猜测题。根据第一段中的“But my suggestion was always refused by her.(但我的建议总是被她拒绝。)”
根据倒数第二段中的“I started by hitting a ball over the net, and Julianna took a big swing and missed. We repeated this several more times. I didn’t tell her she was holding the racket too close to the neck or she should step more into her forehand.(我一开始把球打过了网,朱莉安娜挥了一大步,没打中。我们又重复了几次。我没有告诉她,她把球拍拿得离脖子太近,或者她应该更多地用正手击球。)”可知,在作者女儿Julianna没有击中球,他们又重复了几次,而且作者并没有告诉她应该如何击球,由此可知,在作者女儿没有击中球的时候,作者重复击球。故选B项。
27.主旨大意题。根据尾段“Now we always find time to play tennis. We’re both eager for an activity that can ease tensions between us in daily life. It’s nice to have a place where both of us can release our negative moods and let them go.(现在我们总是找时间打网球。

【答案】8.C 9.A 10.C 11.D
根据第二段“The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes.(字迹潦草的字迹让我母亲很担心,所以有一天,当她在一次家长会上遇到怀特老师时,她问她为什么从不纠正我的错误。)”
根据第三段“The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. (孩子们刚刚开始对使用单词和造句感到兴奋。)”可知,孩子们刚开始对遣词造句感到兴奋;结合画线词所在句中的“that enthusiasm with red ink.”可知,Mrs. White不想用红墨水来打击孩子们的积极性,即降低孩子们的热情。由此可推知,dampen应意为“减弱”,与A项意思相近。故选A。
根据第五段内容尤其是“Eventually the ‘e’ s and ‘a’ s that were wrong placed in ‘beautiful’ settled into their right places.(最终,在“beautiful”一词中放错位置的“e”和“a”找到了正确的位置。)”

【答案】8.D 9.B 10.C 11.B

She leaped off the sofa and hugged my knees with such happiness that I could only look down at her and smile. After all, she was only three and learning about the world in her own way. And she always chose to explore and destroy my room because she loved me, her big sister.

【答案】4.C 5.D 6.C 7.A
根据第一段中““We rescue chimps from terrible conditions and help them to live in the wild like other chimpanzees,” Chantal said, “They need to learn chimp behavior.””(“我们把黑猩猩从恶劣的环境中解救出来,帮助它们像其他黑猩猩一样在野外生活,”尚塔尔说,“它们需要学习黑猩猩的行为。”)
根据第三段Rebeca Atencia说的话“We have effectively reduced the arrival of orphan (孤儿) chimpanzees to Tchimpounga. We’ve received only one orphan chimp over the past three years.(我们已经有效地减少了孤儿黑猩猩到达Tchimponga的数量。在过去的三年里,我们只收到了一只孤儿黑猩猩。)”和第四段“The chimps have shown that they understand the sanctuary staff’s efforts. “Saving the life of a chimpanzee is very gratifying,” Atencia says. “Chimpanzees know when you’re helped them or saved their life. Sometimes, they thank you with a hug.””(这些黑猩猩已经表明,它们理解保护区工作人员的努力。“拯救一只黑猩猩的生命是非常gratifying,”Atencia说。“黑猩猩知道你什么时候帮助了它们或救了它们的命。有时候,它们会用拥抱来感谢你。”)可知,减少孤儿黑猩猩的行动很有成效,黑猩猩还会感激你,可得出Rebeca Atencia认为保护区的工作进行地很成功。故选D项。
6.词句猜测题。根据第四段中“The chimps have shown that they understand the sanctuary staff’s efforts.”(这些黑猩猩已经表明,它们理解保护区工作人员的努力。)以及“Chimpanzees know when you’re helped them or saved their life. Sometimes, they thank you with a hug.”(黑猩猩知道你什么时候帮助了它们或救了它们的命。
根据最后一段中“As the leader of Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), Atencia also works with people who live near the sanctuary. These people depend on the forest for food and building houses, and their growing population is a danger to chimps. JGI helps the people in these places get healthcare, clean water, and others. This makes them less dependent on the area’s natural resources and reduces illegal trade in chimps.”(作为珍·古道尔研究所(JGI)的负责人,Atencia还与住在保护区附近的人们一起工作。 故选A项。

【答案】4.A 5.A 6.C 7.A
根据画线词后面一句“Free-spirited felines(猫类) who like to spend time outdoors are often gone for hours at a time, leaving their owners wondering where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to.(喜欢在户外度过时光的自由奔放的猫科动物通常会一次离开几个小时,让它们的主人想知道它们去了哪里或在做什么。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中纸条的内容“We have no idea where he comes from. He always wants people to give him lots of scratches(挠痒). What’s his name? Does he have an owner?(我们不知道他来自哪里。他总是想让人们给他挠痒。他叫什么名字?他有主人吗?)”可知,邻居写纸条想知道Billy来自哪里、有没有名字和主人,由此可推测出,邻居想知道关于这只猫的身份。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“To be honest, a closed door and a sensitive alarm can ensure the safety of our houses. But they can prevent neighbors from having healthy friendships. To break the ice, we just need a cat and a note.(老实说,紧闭的门和灵敏的警报器可以确保我们房子安全。但它们会阻止邻居建立健康的友谊。为了打破僵局,我们只需要一只猫和一张纸条。)”可知,Zack King认为紧闭的门和灵敏的警报器会阻止邻居之间建立友谊,而借助猫和纸条,我们就可以打破这种局面,由此可推测出,他认为我们应该和邻居交朋友。故选A。

Dad never complained (埋怨) about unfairness and he has worked for so many years! In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.
4.What can we know about the author’s father?
A.He lived a rich life. B.He was well-educated.
C.He was an outgoing man. D.He worked at a young age.
5.What was the author hired to do by a neighboring farmer?
A.Wash tractors. B.Watch the field.
C.Deal with harmful weeds. D.Recognize different chemicals.
6.What does the underlined word “reluctant” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Delighted. B.Content. C.Unwilling. D.Stressed.
7.What can we infer from the article?
A.The author gave the money to his father.
B.The author finally understood the meaning of growth.
C.The relationship between the author and his father was not good.
D.The author has always been happy to put his money into the household.

根据第四段中“My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine as I wished. (父亲的话让我意识到,我的收入可能不会如我所愿。)”和“I thought it was not fair that I had to contribute my money .(我认为让我拿钱出来是不公平的。)” 由此推知,在第五段““How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my income.(“你挣了多少钱?”爸爸问。我很惊讶,reluctant to say my income.)”

但在最后一段中“I understood immediately that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard work of my parents! Dad never complained (埋怨) about unfairness and he has worked for so many years! In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.

C.Running a business requires skills. D.Acts of kindness are never too small.
【答案】4.C 5.A 6.B 7.D

根据第四段““I want you to know I appreciate what you do for my children. I worry about them taking two buses to get home. It means a lot that they can wait here and you keep an eye on them. When they are with the doughnut lady, I know they are safe,” I told him it wasn’t a big deal, and that I enjoyed the kids.(“我想让你知道,我很感激你为我的孩子们所做的一切。我担心他们坐两辆公共汽车回家。他们能在这里等着,你看着他们,这对我来说意义重大。当他们和卖甜甜圈的女士在一起时,我知道他们是安全的。”我告诉他这没什么大不了的,我喜欢孩子们)”可推知,这位父亲非常感激作者照顾孩子,作者的回答“这没什么大不了的”是想表达她做的事不是特别重要,只是一件小事罢了,故选A。
6.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Now I think about all the people who keep an eye on my own children. They become, well, Doughnut Ladies. Like the men at the skating rink (滑冰场) who let my boys ring home.

【答案】32.D 33.C 34.B 35.D
