Most of us have memories from childhood that go something like this: You’re not leaving the table until you eat all your vegetables. How lucky we were to have nutritious food, even if we had to learn to like it.
According to the Houston Health Dement, for nearly one quarter of children living in Houston, Texas, the choice to eat healthily doesn’t exist. They are unable to obtain fresh produce, relying entirely on canned and packaged goods. A lack of fresh meat and produce in your diet can lead to increases in depression and obesity (肥胖) and greater risks of heart disease and cancer. A poor diet is also tied to poor performance in school for young children.
Annie Zhu was shocked to find out so many children in Houston lived in food deserts. She was also shocked to see how much fresh food supermarkets throw away every day. So she and her twin sister Shirley went to work. First, they partnered with the Houston Health Department to distribute food at community centers. With the help of a food rescue organization Second Servings, they collected surplus (过剩的) food from grocery stores and began organizing monthly markets. They even connected with human service agencies to provide help beyond food. Lastly, since fresh food needs to be picked up right away, they developed a text-messaging app Fresh Hub, which tells people when and where the markets are.
Each month, Fresh Hub organizes high school students who wear green shirts and go to set up stands of fresh produce, baked goods and packaged meats. The Zhu sisters and the green dream team have distributed over 1,500 pounds of food. And while families are collecting food, volunteers are entertaining kids with art projects that teach healthy eating.
At the end of the day, Annie says they are happy to be making a difference. “Frustration over the unfair circumstances built into society led us to meet incredible people,” says Annie. “I know I'm not alone on this journey to help the underserved-and I know my journey has only just begun!”
4. What issue in Houston do the Zhu sisters focus on?
A. Poor access to fresh food for kids. B. Kids’ dislike for green vegetables.
C. Food supplies in supermarkets. D. Childhood obesity and illness.
5. What is Fresh Hub supposed to do?
A. Serve as a healthy food provider. B. Collect fresh food from grocery stores.
C. Inform users of fresh produce available. D. Publish authoritative information on food.
6. What are the volunteers assigned to do during the event?
A. Sell fresh produce to the underserved.
B. Distribute as much free food as possible.
C. Raise awareness of a healthy diet among kids.
D. Look after kids and provide them with healthy food.
7. How does Annie Zhu feel about their efforts to help the underserved?
A. Puzzled and curious. B. Frustrated and anxious.
C. Surprised and excited. D. Delighted and satisfied.

Animals being extinct from the Earth is a serious issue. When this happens in order to use their fur or skin for fashion, it is even worse, since it's not even for a matter of human survival. That's why a London zoo decided to make a powerful statement at the Siamese crocodile enclosure (鳄鱼围栏).
When visitors come in expecting to see a crocodile, they' re greeted with the handbag instead, making a very effective and powerful point about illegal wildlife trade and the harm it takes on the species involved.
A sign by the enclosure reads, “This bag used to be found swimming in slow- moving rivers and streams across Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade.”
Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range. A huge part of the dec line of population is due to humans using their wetland habitat for rice farming, and things only took a turn for the worse when large- scale hunting for their skin for commercial purposes began in the 1950s.
The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was confiscated at a UK airport according to Benjamin Tapley, leader of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL London Zoo.
Tapley told The Huffington Post “We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world. At ZSL, we are working globally with governments and local communities to protect wildlife, support law enforcement(执法) that targets illegal trade networks, empower local communities affected by IWT and reduce demand for threatened wildlife.”
8. Why does the sign say this handbag used to swim?
A. It is made of a crocodile's skin. B. It is made into a crocodile shape.
C. It is light enough to float on water. D. It was kept in flowing river at first.
9 What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Wildly hunting of Siamese crocodiles. B. Destruction of Siamese crocodiles’ habitats.
C. Commercial value of Siamese crocodiles. D. Causes to make Siamese crocodiles endangered.
10. What does the underlined word “confiscate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Found. B. Made. C. Seized. D. Stolen.
11. What do Tapley's words focus on?
A. The harm IWT caused. B. The purpose to show the handbag.
C. The importance of wildlife protection. D. The crisis endangered animals are facing.
D
Cows love having an open area of grassland. But in some parts of the world, this is only feasible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being kept inside is not always enjoyable for the cows, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cow owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specially. The program simulates (模 拟) grassland in summer and was designed for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cows see red most easily but have a hard time telling the difference between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
The cow owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being used around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the“ structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the animals
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”
12. What does the underlined word “feasible” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Influential. B. Possible.
C. Necessary. D. Meaningful.
13. What’s the result of cows wearing the VR headsets?
A. They could tell the difference between blue and green.
B. Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
14. What’s Izzet Kocak’s possible attitude towards the VR headsets?
A. Satisfied. B. Opposed.
C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
15. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field.
B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality.
D. A cow with good moods can produce more milk.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.

Each month Fresh Hub organizes high school students who wear green shirts and go to set up stands of fresh produce, baked goods and packaged meats.

The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was confiscated at a UK airport, according to Benjamin Tapley, leader of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL London Zoo.
Tapley told The Huffington Post, “We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

The cow owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw the shock and disbelief on their faces. I couldn’t help but approach Luella, tightly holding her hands and saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded at me, still appearing puzzled by the devastating sight. My family volunteered to help hers clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees from the yard. To uplift Luella’s spirits and bring her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Yet now, they were all gone. Determined to restore the beauty that once thrived, I suggested that we rebuild the garden. Luella agreed delightedly. With each bulb carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the sprouting of a new friendship between us, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give. You may receive something unexpected in return.
