Day 1
Kwanzaa is a celebration of AfricanAmerican history and culture. It begins on December 26th and continues until New Year's Day, January 1st.
During the festival, a family member, usually the youngest child, lights candles in a special candleholder. Each night a candle is lit. Traditionally there are three green candles, three red candles and a central black candle. They represent the seven Kwanzaa principles(原则). The principles are believed to play a big role in building strong, successful families, neighborhoods, etc. In the evenings, adults share stories and explain how to follow the seven principles in daily life. On the sixth day, which falls on New Year's Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large meal.

In 1966, Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa. He was studying the history of Africa at that time. Dr. Karenga wanted to create a holiday to bring AfricanAmericans together and celebrate their history and culture. He called the holiday “Kwanzaa”. In fact, the name comes from an African language, and it means “first fruits of the harvest(收获季节)”.

Day 2
There's no better way to experience a place than through its food. My hometown is home to the world's largest food festival—The Taste of Chicago. Growing up here, I've been to the festival many times with my family.
As one of America's best food festivals, The Taste of Chicago dates back to 1980. A group of restaurant owners suggested the idea of a food festival. Jane Byrne, the thenmayor of Chicago, agreed. And the city has been hosting the event ever since.
At first, The Taste of Chicago was a oneday event held on the fourth of July and about 25,000 people enjoyed it along Chicago's North Michigan Avenue. Popularity of the event was high. So the next year, organizers decided to move the location to Chicago's famous Grant Park. Also, it grew to be a tenday event.
Today the festival is held for five days every July and it is the city's biggest event. About four million people go there every year. Lots of restaurants from across the city come together to show off their menus. There are also different activities and events including concerts, rides and games.
The festival is free to get in, but if you want to enjoy the food, you must buy food tickets. The tickets come in strips(条) of 14 for $10 and you can use them for tastesize and fullsize portions(份). If you want to try as many new taste experiences as you possibly can, ask for a tastesize portion. You'll get it for anywhere between one and six tickets and up to twenty for a fullsize portion.
