New Space Missions in 2024
ESA’s Hera mission
The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch its Hera spacecraft in October on a mission to return to an asteroid (小行星) system visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022. Hera is designed to collect data on the targeted system, called Didymos. The spacecraft is expected to closely examine the physical properties of Didymos and measure detailed effects of DART’s crash.
Europa Clipper
NASA hopes to launch its Europa Clipper mission in October. This orbiter is designed to carry out close examinations of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Specifically, the mission will look for signs that the icy moon might hold the right conditions to support life. NASA says the orbiter will fly in orbit around Jupiter and perform repeated close flybys of the icy moon.
Boeing’s Starliner test flight
NASA and Boeing have said they plan to launch the first crewed test flight of the company’s Starliner spacecraft. NASA says it is targeting May 2024 to have Starliner ready for flight. The launch date is to be set later.
The spacecraft completed its first unscrewed flight test to the International Space Station (ISS) last May. But Boeing has experienced several technical difficulties with Starliner during the mission and has worked with NASA to fix the problems as it prepares for the planned crewed flight.
SpaceX Starship test
SpaceX, another NASA’s partner, has been successfully using its rockets and spacecraft to transport astronauts and materials to the ISS since 2020. But the company will be seeking a successful test flight in 2024 for its super-heavy Starship spacecraft.
SpaceX experienced two failed Starship tests in 2023 — one in April and the other in November — which resulted in explosions. The April explosion caused major damage to the launch structure in the state of Texas. SpaceX has said it has been examining the issues related to the explosions and plans to carry out another test of Starship as soon as possible. But it will have to wait until the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completes its investigation of the launch site damage and approves a new test.
21.Which of the following plans to collect data about Didymos?
A.NASA. B.FAA. C.SpaceX. D.ESA.
22.When is Europa Clipper scheduled to launch?
A.In April. B.In May. C.In October. D.In November.
23.What do we know about SpaceX Starship?
A.The date for its third test flight is unclear.
B.It has succeeded in sending astronauts to the ISS.
C.The reason for its first failure has been identified.
D.Its second test flight damaged the launch structure.

The National Heritage Responders is a volunteer network of around 100 experts in cultural heritage conservation from around Puerto Rico. They assist individuals and institutions in figuring out how to save important objects and buildings after disasters. Their crisis hotline has been busier than ever in recent years because of more frequent and severe weather brought on by climate change. In 2023, there have been around 70 calls so far, up from fewer than 10 in 2008, when the hotline first appeared.
Ann Frellsen, the Atlanta-based book and paper conservator, is a longtime heritage responder volunteer with more than three decades of experience in helping out cultural institutions after disasters. She was among those sent to Puerto Rico over several visits starting a couple of months after two hurricanes hit it in 2017.
After providing initial support via the phone, Frellsen and her team came in to help La Casa del Libro and other local institutions in crisis with equipment, supplies and advice. In fact, much of the advice the hotline provides is via phone or video-chat; volunteers are sent out into the field in certain cases, on an as-needed basis.
“There were no stoplights and signs on the highways because they’d all been blown away,” Frellsen said. She added that figuring out how to reach the more than 20 institutions that needed assistance in Puerto Rico was challenging—not to mention the on-the-job hazards.
When Frellsen isn’t heading into disaster zones to help save artifacts (文物) from fires, hurricanes and floods, she trains others in the heritage conservation field to do the same. Some of the participants may eventually take the test to become National Heritage Responders. But at this moment, they are deep in a hands-on training exercise, based on an imaginary situation cooked up by Frellsen and her co-trainers.
24.What can we say about Puerto Rico?
A.It calls on people to keep in contact. B.Natural disasters are increasing there.
C.It works hard to build highways. D.The weather is really nice there.
25.What can be learned about the National Heritage Responders?
A.It teaches individuals how to protect themselves.
B.New volunteers can join it with no tests required.
C.Victims all over the world can contact it by hotline.
D.It sends experts to the disaster areas when necessary.
26.What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Dangers. B.Skills. C.Trainings. D.Rights.
27.What are Frellsen and her team busy doing at present?
A.Taking various tests. B.Entering a new disaster area.
C.Conducting a practical exercise. D.Restoring priceless artifacts.

Campaigners opposing the building of new wind farms often point to the possibility that the blades of wind turbines (涡轮机) can cut careless birds to bits. No one doubts that wind turbines kill some birds. But a new analysis of American data, published in Environmental Science & Technology, suggests the numbers have little impact on bird populations.
Wind power has expanded dramatically in America over the past 20 years. Many studies have analysed the effects in specific locations or on specific bird species. But few have looked at the effects on wildlife at the population level. Dr. Katovich, an economist at the University of Geneva, used the Christmas Bird Count, a citizen-science project. Volunteers count birds they spot over Christmas, and the society edits the numbers. Its records stretch back over a century.
Dr. Katovich assumed, reasonably, that if wind turbines harmed bird populations, then the numbers seen in the Christmas Bird Count would drop in places where new turbines had been built. He combined bird population and species maps with the locations and construction dates of all wind turbines in America, with the exceptions of Alaska and Hawaii, between 2000 and 2020. He found that building turbines had no obvious effect on bird populations. That reassuring finding held even when he looked specifically at large birds that many people believe are particularly easy to be struck.
Dr. Katovich didn’t limit his analysis to wind power alone. He also examined oil-and-gas extraction (提取). Like wind power, this has boomed in America over the past decades. Comparing bird populations to the locations of new gas wells revealed an average 15% drop in bird numbers when new wells were drilled, probably due to a combination of noise, air pollution and the disturbance of rivers and ponds that many birds rely upon. When drilling happened in places designated by experts as “important bird areas”, bird numbers instead dropped by 25%. Such places are typically migration hubs, feeding grounds or breeding locations.
Wind power, in other words, not only produces far less planet-heating gas than fossil fuels. It appears to be significantly less damaging to wildlife, too. Wind turbines might look dramatic, but their effect on birds isn’t.
28.What does a new analysis find about wind farms?
A.They take the lives of careless birds. B.They improve birds’ living conditions.
C.They do little harm to bird populations. D.Their harmful effects on birds vary a lot.
29.How did Dr. Katovich make the finding?
A.By counting bird numbers in different locations.
B.By relating bird numbers to turbines’ distribution.
C.By researching perfect places to build turbines.
D.By studying the decline of birds near turbines.
30.What contributes most to the drop of bird numbers?
A.The wide spread of wind turbines. B.The over-development of farming.
C.The lack of environmental concern. D.The drilling of wells for oil and gas.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wind Turbines and Birds Can Co-exist B.Oil Drilling Shares the Sky With Birds
C.Several Factors Lead to Bird Decline D.Campaigners Oppose Bird Disturbance
D
Minimizing the environmental damage that new roads cause is generally regarded as a good thing. But to do that, it helps to understand just how new roads cause the damage of which they are accused.
Recently, a group of researchers led by Dr. Gonzalez conducted an experiment and proved that immigration is good for the health of animal populations. A road destroys only a small part of the habitat, thus destroying just a few local populations of creatures. So the argument that road-building itself is bad for biodiversity is not self-evidently correct. Those who nevertheless hold this view say that apparently separate local populations of animals are, in fact, parts of much larger populations connected via migration.
According to this theory, when a local population struggles to move about — because of an epidemic, for example — individuals from neighboring communities can fill the gaps.
The implications of the theory are straightforward. Cut local populations off from each other and each is more likely to disappear. And roads are good at doing just that. Testing the theory with experimental roads, however, would be expensive. Dr. Gonzalez’s brainwave was to do the whole thing on a much smaller scale.
The team studied moss-covered rocks. On some rocks the researchers left the moss untouched; on others they made “roadways” across to leave the moss isolated. After waiting six months, they found that in the disturbed habitats nearly all the bug population had declined compared with undisturbed moss, and 40% of the species had become extinct.
The real test came in the second part of the experiment. In this, the researchers removed moss much as before, but they left narrow moss paths to bridge the no-bug’s-land between islands. The islands with bridges did far better than isolated islands — a result that supports the notion that population exchange is necessary to keep an ecosystem healthy.
Whether these results can be translated to large-scale ecosystems remains uncertain. But if they can, they would cause more, not less, concern about the ecological effects of road-building. On the other hand, they also suggest a way out. In Britain, tunnels are often built under roads for animals of regular habits, such as badgers (獾), to be able to travel their traditional routes without having to fight with traffic. Extending that principle, perhaps special bridges might be a cheap way of letting man and nature rub along a bit better.
32.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Calling on us to stop building roads for a healthy ecosystem.
B.Warning us of potential dangers of animal immigration.
C.Informing us of the environmental damage caused by new roads.
D.Suggesting a new way to avoid the damage caused by new roads.
33.Dr. Gonzalez’s experiment found that __________.
A.building roads is expensive
B.immigration is good for animals
C.roads cut off animal immigration
D.tunnels should be built under roads
34.How does the author present his point?
A.By analyzing facts. B.By giving examples.
C.By providing scientific findings. D.By comparing possible effects.
35.According to the passage, which of the following statements will the writer agree with?
A.The impact of road-building is not as serious as we thought.
B.Road-building is beneficial to animal immigration.
C.Environmental damage caused by road-building is still uncertain.
D.Environmental damage caused by road-building might be lessened.

One might hope that children’s capacity for boredom would be matched by an appetite for all things new — If only parenting were so easy. 36 Here are expert-approved tips on how to get your kids to attempt new things without frightening them off.
Start with what they know. Take something your kids already like or are good at, and push them to try it in a new environment or a slightly different way. If you want your kids to feel confident about their strengths and use that as a springboard to try something new, think: 37 How can you help them advance in that? There is no need to learn a new thing — you just create an opportunity to push your kids to try something new with the skill they know.
Make a list. Ask your children what new things they want to try out or have them write a list. Help them figure out what it is that they are worried about when they avoid new things. 38 It’s a way to help them feel in charge of their emotions and understand the connection between thoughts and actions.
39 You should both recognize your children’s fears and express certainty that they can handle the task. It is important to project confidence in your children. Say you believe they have capacity to handle those challenges and tolerate the discomfort or worries or negative feelings that might come along with doing new or scary things.
Consider if they are doing enough. You should also do some reflecting of your own. Do your children really need to try tofu or martial arts? If your kids are functioning overall, they are doing the basics and they have some friends, then be encouraging. 40 Sometimes doing that stops you from focusing on the things they are doing.
A.Sympathize and encourage.
B.Be tolerant and open-minded.
C.What are your kids comfortable with?
D.Why are your kids fascinated by new things?
E.Don’t overstress on everything they are not doing.
F.Sometimes the act of identifying and naming fears can help decrease them.
G.Trying new things is difficult for many children, whether a different food or skill.

I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears?
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence.

W: I didn’t catch the sports news on TV last night. Who was the winner?
M: Nadal lost to Federer in the last minute.
W: That’s surprising. I thought it was Djokovic who would win the game.
M: He came close.
2.B
W: Good morning, Blue bird Restaurant. How can I help you?
M: Hi. I’m Isaac Reed. I’m calling to make some changes to the existing reservation. I booked a table for tonight, but I won’t be able to make it.

W: Hi, this is Laura Sanders speaking. I can’t take the call now. Please leave a message.
M: (beep) Hi, Laura. This is Joseph. Sorry, I can’t go to the open concert with you in the evening as planned. I have to go to a neighboring town with my boss on business.
4.B
M: I’m starving. Do you want to grab dinner together?
W: I’d like to, but I can’t. I have to meet a client after work.
M: Okay, maybe another time. I’ll ask John then.

W: What’s going on? We’ve been trapped in traffic for half an hour. It seems as if it’s going to rain.
M: The Google Maps on my phone shows a car accident just happened.
W: Oh my! Do you think we’ll make it to the cinema in time?
M: I’m not sure. Try a different route?
W: That won’t be easy. According to the map, the shortest route passes near City Stadium, but it’s closed for construction.
M: Seriously? Well, it looks like we have no choice but to wait for the police to finish their job.

W: Do you feel like joining our study group for the science project?
M: Sure. That would be great. When and where do you guys meet?
W: We usually meet at the library on Thursday afternoons.
M: Well, that’s tomorrow. But I will have a basketball practice then.
W: Oh, I didn’t know you were so serious about playing basketball. So, is it at this time every week?
M: Normally, it’s on Fridays. But our coach is going on a business trip this Friday afternoon.
W: That’s alright. We’d be happy to see you in the group next week.

W: Certainly. Shall we do it now?
M: Well, if you’re done with your lunch, then now is a good time.
W: Oh, yes. I already finished it ten minutes ago.
M: Okay. So, I’ve seen the teaching plan you made, and it looks richly detailed. But I’ve noticed that there aren’t scheduled cultural activities for the next month.
W: Actually, I have made two plans: a three-hour tour around the boat museum or a two-hour trip to the local theater. Our students’ parents have yet to determine which one to choose. I’m going to meet them after my math class this afternoon.
M: But the parents won’t go with the children, right?
W: Of course not. They just want to take part in the discussion.
M: Good. Let me know how it goes.

W: Marc, I just saw a boy in front of us casually throw an empty bottle on the road. Can you imagine that? Our schoolteacher Miss Watson told us this sort of behavior is completely unacceptable.
M: You’re right. We can pick it up ourselves, or catch up with him and remind him not to do that again.
W: I’d go with the latter. It’s necessary to let everyone know how important it is to keep our environment clean.
M: I agree with you. You’re such a great girl and Miss Watson will be proud of you. But we must be polite and respectful when talking to him. Maybe he just couldn’t find a waste bin.
W: I don’t think so. I did see many rubbish bins around here. It’s worth mentioning that there is one at every bus stop. Do you remember the bin that we put the candy wrappers in at the last stop? That’s convenient.
M: Yeah, you’re right. Anyway, let’s go now.

Hello, everyone. I have to announce with a heavy heart that our beloved library will close its doors after you leave today. This decision was not made lightly. The board of directors thought that it was necessary for the following reasons. For starters, the rise of modern technology has resulted in fewer visitors to the library. People turn to online resources more often. Second, the cost of running the library has become too high due to its structural repairs and outdated services. Third, the library collection has become out of date. With a limited budget, we have found it difficult to keep a collection that can meet your needs. Our library had quite a long history and first came into use on March 29th, 1954. Over the years, it has built up a collection of nearly 10, 000 books. It is a sad day for us, but the decision has been made. We really hope to see you again someday.

根据第一段“Campaigners opposing the building of new wind farms often point to the possibility that the blades of wind turbines (涡轮机) can cut careless birds to bits. No one doubts that wind turbines kill some birds. But a new analysis of American data, published in Environmental Science & Technology, suggests the numbers have little impact on bird populations. (反对新建风力发电厂的活动人士经常指出,风力涡轮机的叶片可能会把粗心大意的鸟儿切成碎片。没有人怀疑风力涡轮机会杀死一些鸟类。但发表在《环境科学与技术》上的一项对美国数据的新分析表明,这些数字对鸟类种群的影响很小。)”可知,新的分析表明风力涡轮机对鸟类种群几乎没有影响。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“He combined bird population and species maps with the locations and construction dates of all wind turbines in America, with the exceptions of Alaska and Hawaii, between 2000 and 2020. (他将2000年至2020年间美国除阿拉斯加和夏威夷以外的所有风力涡轮机的位置和建造日期与鸟类种群和物种地图相结合。)”可知,通过将鸟类数量与涡轮机分布联系起来,Katovich博士得出了这一发现。故选B项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Comparing bird populations to the locations of new gas wells revealed an average 15% drop in bird numbers when new wells were drilled, probably due to a combination of noise, air pollution and the disturbance of rivers and ponds that many birds rely upon. When drilling happened in places designated by experts as “important bird areas”, bird numbers instead dropped by 25%.
再结合最后一段中“It appears to be significantly less damaging to wildlife, too. Wind turbines might look dramatic, but their effect on birds isn’t. (它对野生动物的伤害似乎也要小得多。风力涡轮机可能看起来很引人注目,但它们对鸟类的影响却并非如此。)”可知,A项“风力涡轮机和鸟类可以共存”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

根据第一段“Minimizing the environmental damage that new roads cause is generally regarded as a good thing. But to do that, it helps to understand just how new roads cause the damage of which they are accused.”(把新建道路对环境造成的破坏降到最低通常被认为是一件好事。
根据第二段“Recently, a group of researchers led by Dr. Gonzalez conducted an experiment and proved that immigration is good for the health of animal populations.”(最近,冈萨雷斯博士领导的一组研究人员进行了一项实验,证明了移民对动物种群的健康有益。)
根据第二段“Recently, a group of researchers led by Dr. Gonzalez conducted an experiment and proved that immigration is good for the health of animal populations.”(最近,冈萨雷斯博士领导的一组研究人员进行了一项实验,证明了移民对动物种群的健康有益),第三段“According to this theory, when a local population struggles to move about — because of an epidemic, for example — individuals from neighboring communities can fill the gaps.”(根据这一理论,当当地人口难以移动时,例如由于流行病,来自邻近社区的个人可以填补空白。)和第五段“After waiting six months, they found that in the disturbed habitats nearly all the bug population had declined compared with undisturbed moss, and 40% of the species had become extinct.”( 等了六个月后,他们发现,与未受干扰的苔藓相比,在受干扰的栖息地,几乎所有的虫子数量都减少了,40%的物种已经灭绝。)
根据文章最后一段“In Britain, tunnels are often built under roads for animals of regular habits, such as badgers (獾), to be able to travel their traditional routes without having to fight with traffic. Extending that principle, perhaps special bridges might be a cheap way of letting man and nature rub along a bit better.”(在英国,人们经常在道路下方建造隧道,让像獾这样的有规律习性的动物能够沿着它们的传统路线行走,而不必与交通争抢。

To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully, just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow. Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship.
