Having retired from the job at the brewery (啤酒厂), Harold Fry is leading a simple life with his wife Maureen when an unexpected mail arrives. The sender is a former woman colleague Harold hasn’t heard about for twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice (临终关怀医院) and is writing to say goodbye. Harold immediately writes a reply and walks eagerly to the nearest mailbox to send it.
However, there is something inside him that makes him give up the thought of posting and despite Maureen’s disagreement, he starts to walk to the faraway Berwick to meet Queenie in person, lasting 87 days.
I first heard about this book The Unlikely Pilgrimage (特别之行) of Harold Fry when I was watching the interview of author Santa Montefiore. This book was a part of her reading list at her friend’s suggestion, so I decided to buy it in the bookstore during this summer. And undoubtedly I made the right choice!
The book has been divided into several chapters and it is more of a collection of short stories. In each chapter, Harold comes across different people, from a garage girl to a manager in the café, each telling a story and influencing Harold in some way. As chapters progress, you get to see a change in Harold.
When Harold makes this long single journey through the countryside, he eats wild berries and sometimes camps in fields, but my favorite parts are that he often engages (使参与) himself in his past. He looks back to his life, his father, wife, son, and Queenie. I felt this is a reminder for all of us to have a moment of our own during our busy schedule.
For a first novel, Joyce has written an incredible story. From the title of the book to the characters, everything is well organized. The story has the energy of an adventure and at the same time, it’s emotionally inspiring.
I don’t think the adapted film is better than the paper book. It’s one of those books where you feel the characters and their lives not by discussing, but only by reading it.
24. What is the text?
A. A book review. B. A moving story.
C. A travel guide. D. A diary.
25. How did the author first hear of the book?
A. From a bookshop owner. B. From a book.
C. From a friend’s recommendation. D. From an author’s interview.
26. Which part of the book does the author most appreciate?
A. Harold’s work experience. B. Harold’s experiences in fields.
C. Harold’s reflection on past life. D. The challenges Harold faces along the way.
27. How does the author suggest truly appreciating the book?
A. By discussing it with others. B. By watching a film adaptation.
C. By reading to feel the characters’ lives. D. By relating it to one’s own life experiences.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. C

Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it subtly tempting you to walk through each aisle and fill your cart without even realizing it.
Grocery store design is a carefully crafted art from both psychological and marketing standpoints, according to Reeves Connelly, who studied architectural design at the Pratt Institute. He explained there is a specific reason why fruit and vegetables are often located at the front of the store, “You’ll grab the fruits and vegetables first and then hopefully feel less guilty about buying junk food later on.” Meanwhile, essential items such as milk and eggs are placed at the back of the store to ensure customers walk through other aisles with many unhealthy options like snacks and sodas, potentially increasing the likelihood of impulse purchases.
There’s also a reason why you often feel lost in local supermarkets. Shockingly, they move things around. Reeves explained, “They are very much aware that these strategies become less effective after you visit the store a few times and get a better sense of where everything is, so they’ll regularly move the products to different aisles to confuse you. The practice is not limited to a specific store but is employed across various retail chains.”
“Their little tricks always work on me,” one regular shopper admits, “I walk in to get three things and end up spending $300; that’s why I hate grocery shopping,” he said. On the other hand, some shoppers are proud to declare they have never fallen into the trap. “That’s why I always keep a shopping list on me,” another shopper shared. “I’ve started having my groceries delivered. If I have to go to the store, I never grab a cart. If I can’t carry it, I’m not buying it,” he added.
28. What is the purpose of the supermarket layout?
A. To encourage healthy lifestyle. B. To save consumers’ shopping time.
C. To provide multiple goods for choice. D. To promote non-essential consumption.
29. What does the underlined word “practice” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Distributing junk food in different areas.
B. Putting milk and eggs at the back of aisles.
C. Rearranging products in supermarkets regularly.
D. Placing fruit and vegetables at the front of the store.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Shopping baskets are better than heavy carts.
B. Most shoppers are trapped in marketing tricks.
C. Grocery delivery can help improve supermarket sales.
D. Taking a shopping list can be a smart move to avoid impulse buying.
31. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A business magazine. B. A psychology report.
C. A research paper. D. A shopping guidebook.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. D 31. A
【解析】

【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“They are very much aware that these strategies become less effective after you visit the store a few times and get a better sense of where everything is, so they’ll regularly move the products to different aisles to confuse you. (他们非常清楚,在你逛了几次店,对所有东西的位置有了更好的了解之后,这些策略就会变得不那么有效,所以他们会定期把产品挪到不同的通道,让你感到困惑。)”以及后文“is not limited to a specific store but is employed across various retail chains.”可知,“定期在超市重新摆放产品”的做法并不局限于特定的商店,而是在各种零售连锁店中使用。故划线词意思是“定期在超市重新摆放产品”。故选C。
【30题详解】

Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go.
The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test.
The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones.
This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking.
A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others.
People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes.
The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.
32. The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean “_______”.
A. result. B. damage. C. mistake. D. improvement.
33. Which of the following can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total.
B The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones.
C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones.
D. The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test.
34. According to the study, teens who use their phones to their right ears a lot do worse in _______.
A. matching numbers. B. reading signals.
C. remembering shape. D. learning words.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings.
B. Facts About Cell Phone Use at School.
C. Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens.
D. Teen’s Cell Phone Use Linked to Memory Problems.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I woke up early on my birthday, excited to go to school and see my friends. Although my parents were not wealthy, they always tried to turn special occasions into beautiful memories with each other.
I was about to leave for school when my mother stopped me. “Wait a minute! We have something special for you!” my mother announced and offered me a shoebox. My eyebrows raised in surprise. This gift was surprising because the box looked like one of my favourite brands. When I lifted the lid, I screamed in delight.
“Happy birthday, baby!” my mom said as I grabbed the popular basketball shoes and tried them on.“I got them from Mr. Byrne’s thrift shop (旧货店), but they look pretty new, right?” “I don’t care where they came from, Mom. They are amazing! Thank you so much!”I held them fondly. “I can’t wait to show them off at school!”
Of course, I received lots of praise at school. Suddenly, Brandon, one of my classmates, shouted, “Look! There’s something written here!” I looked carefully and saw the words “To my dearest boy…” on a sole (鞋底).
“Your mom probably wrote them,” Brandon stated.
I shook my head. “My mom’s handwriting is not like this. It must be from the old owner.”
I wondered about the words the rest of the day. Someone had really loved my sneakers, and maybe these shoes held much meaning to someone else.
After school, I walked to Mr. Byrne’s store and asked around. The older man said, “Oh, they were brought in by a kid named Samuel. He lives in a red house nearby. Mrs. Gherkins’ son, I believe.”
“Do you know why he sold them?”
“Most people bring stuff here because they need money,” Mr. Byrne stated.
I walked out of the store, thinking about how sad the boy probably was. I wanted to know what happened, so I looked around that street and soon spotted the red house.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I returned home barefoot (赤脚的) and my parents were surprised.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I walked up to the front steps and knocked on the door. Out came a kid, calling himself Samuel. After greeting, I came straight to the point, asking why the shoes went to the thrift shop. From Samuel’s hesitant words, I knew the fact that his family needed money badly because of his father’s sudden illness. Thus, Samuel had to give up the precious birthday gift. Moved by what he said, I took off the shoes and handed them to Samuel without hesitation, wishing his family all the best. Tears in eyes, Samuel thanked me again and again.
Paragraph 2:
I returned home barefoot and my parents were shocked. Before they could say anything, the whole story came pouring out. “The amazing shoes have been back to the owner, Samuel! There’s special meaning to him!” I asked my parents to forgive me for my immediate action without referring to their opinions. Instead of scolding (训斥) me, my parents went over and hugged me tightly, praising me for what I had done. Later on, I got another special pair of shoes for my birthday. Such a “small” but beautiful memory inspired me to be a better person.

Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it, subtly tempting you to walk through each aisle and fill your cart without even realizing it.

B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones.
35 Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings.
B. Facts About Cell Phone Use at School.
C Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I walked up to the front steps and knocked on the door.
