A study found that first-borns have an average (平均的) IQ that is three points higher than people who fall into a different place in the birth order, perhaps because first-borns often help younger brothers and sisters, which improves their own skills. In 2007, an international organization of CEOs found that 43% of CEOs are first-borns, 33% are middle children, and 23% are last-borns. First-borns are more likely to be doctors and astronauts and get higher pay. If first-borns are more successful, last-borns are usually more agreeable. They are also more likely to be funny, possibly to get attention from all the bigger people at the dinner table. Mark Twain and Stephen Colbert were both the youngest in large families, and Jim Carrey was the youngest of four. According to a 2007 Time magazine article, “The power of Birth Order”, last-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen. Then there are the middle children: we have not ignored (忽视) them! Many middle children are short of one-on-one time with their parents. They often feel short-changed: the oldest gets more rights, and the youngest is spoiled (宠坏的). Though they may be ignored, middle children are more likely to grow into easygoing adults. Many factors make us who we are, but if the research is correct, birth order may be one of the most important factors. 36. Who is most likely to be a CEO? A. A first-born. B. A second-born. C. A third-born. D. A last-born. 37. What can we learn about Jim Carrey? A. He was likely to be given low pay. B. He was likely to be agreeable. C. He was a first-born. D. He was a middle child. 38. What does the underlined word “short-changed” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Unfair. B. Lucky. C. Comfortable. D. Satisfied. 39. What can we learn from the research? A. Birth order has no influence on IQ. B. Birth order matters a lot at the dinner table C. Birth order may decide who we are. D. Birth order is a factor in making us powerful. 40. What would be the best title for the text? A. Where Is Your Place in the Family? B. Who Improves Your Social Skills? C. What Makes You Successful in Life? D. How Can You Grow into a Big Man? 【答案】36. A 37. B 38. A 39. C 40. They found that he had a risk for liver (肝脏) disease. The DNA also showed that Beethoven caught the virus hepatitis B (乙肝病毒) in the last months of his life. The virus hurts the liver. The findings suggest Beethoven’s liver problems were enough to cause the liver failure widely believed to have killed him. The musician was also believed to have been a heavy drinker, which can influence the liver. The musician himself wrote that he wanted doctors to study his health problems after he died. Axel Schmidt is a researcher who helped lead the research. He said that Beethoven’s sicknesses had “sometimes prevented his creative work”. Schmidt added that for many doctors, “it has always been a mystery” what exactly killed him. Since his death, scientists have long tried to piece together Beethoven’s medical history. And they have offered many explanations for his many health conditions. But new examination technology and methods now make it possible to revisit (再次讨论) health and death information by studying ancient DNA. The DNA were collected from hair cut from Beethoven’s head. Getting enough genetic (遗传的) material was difficult because DNA in hair gets cut up into very small pieces. But finally, after using up almost 3 meters of Beethoven’s hair, the team finished it. The question of what caused Beethoven’s hearing loss remains unanswered, said Ohio State University’s Dr Cooper. He said that the mystery might continue forever because DNA can not show us everything about our health. However, Cooper added that the mystery is part of what makes Beethoven so interesting and popular. “The fact that we can’t know is OK,” he said. 41. What did researchers find by examining Beethoven’s DNA? A. Why he kept fit in the last months. B. How he caught the virus hepatitis B. C. What might have caused his death. D. What he drank most while young. 42. It is still a mystery to people ________ according to the passage. A. why Beethoven couldn’t hear B. what stopped Beethoven from creating music C. how many explanations there were for Beethoven’s death D. what made it possible to revisit Beethoven’s death information 43. What difficulty did scientists have in examining Beethoven’s DNA? A. The technology was out of date. B. It was hard to collect enough DNA. C. There wasn’t enough time to do research. D. It took a lot of time to find Beethoven’s hair. 44. What did Beethoven ask doctors to do? A. Examine his DNA later. B. Develop his creativity. C. Keep his mystery forever. D. C Birth order—does it matter? Are you different because you are the first, second, or third child in your family—or maybe the last of nine? 37 What can we learn about Jim Carrey? A Where Is Your Place in the Family? B. Who Improves Your Social Skills? C. What Makes You Successful in Life? D. How Can You Grow into a Big Man? D Researchers who examined DNA from famous German musician Ludwig van Beethoven have found something new about his health.
