Get rid of mosquitoes, but how?

It may seem difficult to avoid mosquitoes, as most of the areas in the world are 33 populated with them. People who live near 34 of water, such as lakeside, may experience more mosquitoes. But there are several measures you can take to reduce their numbers.
Mosquitoes need less than a centimeter of water to lay eggs. A female can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. So, check your 35 to see if there is anywhere that collects water. Water can easily collect in small 36 —a child’s toy, a trash can lid, or a cooking pot.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself. Put screens in your doors and windows or keep them closed. And cut down on time spent outdoors between the early evening and the early morning. Mosquitoes are most 40 during that time.

Based on this trend, eco-communities are being designed with a green 42 in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia is one of them.

Peanuts to This
Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real talk I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became obvious that there were two people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
But now, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I should have a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my decision to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!
56.What did the author’s classmates think about his report?
A.Adequate. B.Ridiculous. C.Boring. D.Puzzling.
57.Why was the author confused about the task?
A.He knew little about American history.
B.He followed the advice and flipped a coin.
C.He forgot his teacher’s instruction.
D.He was new at the school.
58.The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means _______.
A.annoyed B.ashamed C.ready D.eager
59.In the end, the author turned things around _______.
A.by redoing his task B.through his own efforts
C.with the help of his grandfather D.under the guidance of his headmaster

Many factors can interfere with a good night’s sleep — from work stress and family responsibilities to illnesses. You might not be able to control the factors that interfere with your sleep. However, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Start with these simple tips.
1. Stick to a sleep scheduleSet aside no more than eight hours for sleep. The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours. Most people don’t need more than eight hours in bed to be well rested. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle. If you don’t fall asleep within about 20 minutes of going to bed, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing. Read or listen to soothing music. Go back to bed when you’re tired. Repeat as needed, but continue to maintain your sleep schedule and wake-up time.
2. Pay attention to what you eat and drink
Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Discomfort might keep you up. Caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. The stimulating effects of caffeine take hours to wear off and can interfere with sleep. And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy at first, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
3. Create a restful environment
Keep your room cool, dark and quiet. Exposure to light in the evenings might make it more challenging to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs. Doing calming activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath or using relaxation techniques, might promote better sleep.
4. Limit daytime naps
Long daytime naps can interfere with nighttime sleep. Limit naps to no more than one hour and avoid napping late in the day. However, if you work nights, you might need to nap late in the day before work to help make up your sleep debt.
5. Include physical activity in your daily routine
Regular physical activity can promote better sleep. However, avoid being active too close to bedtime. Spending time outside every day might be helpful, too.
6. Manage worries
Try to resolve your worries or concerns before bedtime. Jot down what’s on your mind and then set it aside for tomorrow. Stress management might help. Start with the basics, such as getting organized, setting priorities and delegating tasks.
60.What can be learned from the passage?
A.It’s not hard to control the factors interfering with our sleep.
B.The longer we sleep, the better we feel.
C.It’s better to remain in bed when you fail to fall asleep.
D.Stress can contribute to bad sleep.
61.According to the article, which of the following encourages better sleep?
A.Do physical exercise before going to bed. B.Drink alcohol to get sleepy.
C.Avoid long naps during the day. D.Do some indoor activities.
62.This article is most likely to come from ____________.
A.a travel magazine B.an advertisement
C.a health magazine D.an informal letter
C
The woods are turning orange. Drifts of dry leaves are growing on forest floors and flying into street corners. From a distance, it is beautiful. But the air is still warm and summery. This turning and leaf fall is not the usual gradual preparation for winter in temperate zones(温带) but a stress response by trees trying to preserve water. We are now in a false autumn, caused by heat and drought. And it feels wrong.
There is, therefore, something deeply disturbing about such a graphic alteration of familiar rhythms. Droughts are not unknown to the UK, of course, and too many parts of the world are certainly familiar with far more severe versions. But increasingly they are occurring in the context of a climate emergency, and record-breaking heat. And the beauty of a false autumn, specifically, has an emotional effect, a deep weirdness, something mysteriously suggestive of evil or danger
Cultures across the world contain ceremonies for the propitiation(宽恕) of the weather; a sense of responsibility for the natural world—and the belief that it will punish us if we fail it—is as old as humanity. One of the reasons why the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1798 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is so effective is the directness with which it links the shooting of an albatross(信天翁)—the destruction of innocent wildlife—to a terrible change in the weather: no rain, just burning, death-dealing sun. We may not understand the mechanism, but at an instinctual(本能的) level it feels right.
And in a similar way it has not really been a surprise to hear that birds are struggling. In London, young swifts (雨燕) were seen falling out of the sky. Fewer—and too early—nuts and berries mean some animals will not live through this winter. Older trees, with their longer roots, will hopefully survive, but young trees may not—all that promises further warming. There will always be a degree of uncertainty about the causes of specific weather events, but we cannot deny that we have not taken care of the albatross. Now we must hope we are doing enough to make sure that these fearful golden days are pot an autumn of autumns.
63.According to the passage, what is a disturbing sign of “a false autumn”?
A.Tree leaves are turning orange and fall gradually in winter.
B.Birds are struggling to fall out of the sky in London.
C.People worldwide are careless of droughts and heat in the UK.
D.Nuts and berries-ripen earlier but yield less than before.
64.Why is Coleridge’s 1798 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner so effective?
A.Because people across the world sympathize with the albatross.
B.Because it directly links destruction of wildlife to extreme weather.
C.Because we are certain about how the weather shifts instinctually.
D.Because he is an established Romantic poet curious about nature.
65.Which of the following is implied by the underlined sentence (Line 6, Paragraph 4)?
A.This autumn must be seen as a warning to take instant action.
B.Plants and animals are bound to survive in spite of their fear.
C.The writer appreciates and looks forward to such golden days.
D.Abundant environmental protection has already been ensured.
66.What is the overall tone of the passage?
A.Optimistic. B.Concerned. C.Humorous. D.Ironic.
Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Tips to Keep Your Personal Items Safe While Travelling
You might be surprised to hear that even in the limited space of an airplane, thefts still do occur. In a case reported, two men on board a flight were arrested after being suspected of stealing cash from fellow passengers’ mid-flight. 67 While airlines don’t advertise the fact, they’re not as rare as you may think. There are some tips to ensure you don’t become the victim of such crimes.
68 This is especially important if you have a black, featureless bag. For example, you can sew a symbol on it or write your initials on the bag.
Keep your valuables such as cash, your ID and passport, and jewellery in a small bag that you can place under the seat in front of you. Rest your feet on your bag to make sure no one gets close to the bag. 69 It takes just a few seconds for experienced thieves to steal your bag, so never give them the opportunity by leaving it unattended.
70 For example, you can divide your cash into three portions and keep some in your small bag, some in a pair of jeans that’s rolled up in your checked baggage, and some in your toiletries bag (化妆包). In this way, even if you lose one stash of money, you will not be left with absolutely no cash.
A.To ensure you get enough storage room, try to board the flight early.
B.Bring it with you whenever you leave your seat.
C.Thieves won’t spend too long on locked bags as it may draw attention to themselves.
D.Cases like this are known as in-flight, or mid-flight thefts.
E.Keep your cash or credit cards in different hiding places.
F.Make sure your bag is easily recognizable so thieves can’t just switch it out with a similar looking bag.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
Fallas Festival is one of the most unique festivals celebrated in Spain. Happening from March 14 to 19 in Valencia, the city is filled with tall colorful statues called ninots, people dancing on the streets to the beat of the drum, traditional foods and a lot of fun! It is a celebration of the end of winter and the start of spring. These impressive ninots are made over many months and will be set on fire in a annual ceremony called La Cremá at the end of the four days. It’s a beautiful way to greet the new season with some heat!
It is very important to know how burning beautiful statues started. Though the origins of the Las Fallas de Valencia are uncertain, the most well-known opinion dates back to centuries ago. In celebration of the coming of spring, carpenters (木匠) would burn traditional lamps used to light up workshops in the darkness of winter that were no longer needed. These lamps were called “parots”. The creative Valencian craftsmen would also dress up their parots as customers that have given them trouble in the past, and later on, it became a tradition to find the most inventive parot. As the years went by, people became more creative and the annual tradition lives on to this day.
Nowadays, Valencia celebrates this festival mainly in 4 days. The streets are filled with extremely great energy — with larger-than-life figures parading the city and people dancing on the streets to the sound of music. During these days there are special events called The Mascleta, Nit de Foc, La Planta, and La Cema. To enjoy the full experience of Las Fallas, we strongly recommend attending all of these events.

Get rid of mosquitoes, but how?
Almost everyone who spends time outdoors has experienced mosquitoes. These bloodsucking insects give itchy bites and can spread disease. But how can you avoid them and protect yourself?

It may seem difficult to avoid mosquitoes, as most of the areas in the world are 33 populated with them. People who live near 34 of water, such as lakeside, may experience more mosquitoes. But there are several measures you can take to reduce their numbers.

Based on this trend, eco-communities are being designed with a green 42 in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia is one of them.

Eco-conscious builders use bamboo wherever possible because it grows fast and does not require 46 to grow.
Energy efficiency is one of the 47 concerns in eco-communities, such as Dockside Green.

A.annoyed B.ashamed C.ready D.eager
59.In the end, the author turned things around _______.
A.by redoing his task B.through his own efforts

C.Humorous. D.Ironic.

A man who kept a 400-pound tiger in his apartment in Harlem, New York has been fined $2,500 and forbidden from owning animals for ten years.
Brian Jackson, 31, had bought the Bengal tiger, named Ming, when it was just a three-month-old cub. It had been living in his fourth-floor apartment for three years, eating raw meat provided by Jackson, who worked as a butcher. Neighbours had often complained of strange smells and loud noises.
Jackson’s unusual pet came to light because he had had to go to the hospital with cuts and bites to his arm. The tiger had attacked him in an apparent attempt to capture and kill a cat that he also kept in the apartment.
Police officers removed the tiger to a New York animal shelter.
A neighbor said, “We liked having Ming here. He was cool. My worry is that he won’t like the country. He’s a city animal, and he likes jazz and hip-hop.”

The annual whale festival in Hermanus, South Africa, starts today. The coastal town, located on the Western Cape about 1.5 hours from Cape Town, is famous for whale watching. It is one of the best locations in the world to witness large numbers of southern right whales moving in the season. The festival, which is the only eco-arts festival in South Africa, attracts over 130,000 visitors.
Hermanus also has the world’s only “Whale Crier”, whose job is to go around and tell people where they may see whales — with his horn. Fortunately, the timing of the festival almost guarantees a whale sighting — as close as a few meters from shore!
The whales are, of course, the main attraction of the festival, but many more terrific activities are available. The seaside environment, with the surrounding mountains, makes an ideal setting to enjoy the festival’s musical performances and fantastic seafood. For those who desire more adventure, there’s open water swimming, a night run and sports challenges. Other activities include an old car show, arts and crafts stalls and entertainment for kids. With something for everyone, what more could one ask for?
Questions:
14. What is the reason for so many visitors choosing to watch whales in Hermanus?

【原文】M: Mom, my teacher wants us to tell the class about where our parents work.
W: What will you tell them about your parents?
M: I will tell them that my dad is a chef and cooks in a nice restaurant. But I don’t know about you because I’m not sure where you work.
W: I work from home.
M: What kind of work do you do from home?
W: I am a medical transcriptionist.
M: What does that mean?
W: It means that I listen to a doctor talking about a medical report and then I write it down for the doctor. This way doctors have something to look at the next time they see their patients.
M: Why doesn’t the doctor write it down himself?
W: Doctors are very busy with patients and don’t have time to write everything down.
M: You do all of this here at home?
W: Yes, I receive the tapes from the doctor and then I write the reports down on our computer.
M: Do you get paid like Dad does at his job?
W: Yes, I get a paycheck for my work every two weeks. The pay is good actually. Money isn’t as tight as it used to be.
M: Why do you want to work at home?
W: For many reasons actually, but above all, I need flexible working hours to make sure I’m able to take care of my family.
M: Now I understand and can explain it to my class. I’m proud of you, Mom! I love you!

A.by redoing his task B.through his own efforts

And the beauty of a false autumn, specifically, has an emotional effect, a deep weirdness, something mysteriously suggestive of evil or danger.
C.Humorous. D.Ironic.

【难度】0.4
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章讲述了气候变暖导致秋天变成了“虚假秋天“,呼吁人们将这种现象视为警告,采取措施阻止全球变暖现象进一步恶化。
63.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“The woods are turning orange. Drifts of dry leaves are growing on forest floors and flying into street corners. From a distance, it is beautiful. But the air is still warm and summery. This turning and leaf fall is not the usual gradual preparation for winter in temperate zones(温带) but a stress response by trees trying to preserve water.(树林正在变成橙色。一堆堆干树叶生长在森林的地面上,飞到街道的角落。从远处看,它是美丽的。但是空气仍然是温暖和夏天。在温带地区,这种转变和落叶并不是通常的渐进过冬准备,而是树木试图保存水分的应激反应。)”可知,本来秋天树叶变黄落下。现在冬天树叶变黄落下,人们误把冬天当秋天,就是虚假秋天。“虚假秋天”的令人不安的迹象是树叶在冬天逐渐变成橙色并逐渐落下。故选A。
64.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“One of the reasons why the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1798 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is so effective is the directness with which it links the shooting of an albatross(信天翁)—the destruction of innocent wildlife—to a terrible change in the weather: no rain, just burning, death-dealing sun.( 浪漫主义诗人塞缪尔·泰勒·柯勒律治(Samuel Taylor Coleridge) 1798年的诗歌《古水手之歌》如此有效果,原因之一是它直接将射杀信天翁——对无辜野生动物的毁灭——与可怕的天气变化联系起来:没有下雨,只有灼热的、令人死亡的太阳。)”可知,柯勒律治1798年的诗歌《古水手之歌》如此有效是因为它将野生动物的毁灭与极端天气直接联系起来。故选B。
65.词句猜测题。根据划线词所在的句子“Now we must hope we are doing enough to make sure that these fearful golden days are pot an autumn of autumns.(现在,我们必须希望我们正在做的足够多,以确保这些可怕的黄金日子成为一个真正秋天中的秋天。)”可推知,划线的句子暗示我们今年秋天必须被视为一个警告,要立即采取行动阻止气候变暖进一步恶化。故选A。
66.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“We are now in a false autumn, caused by heat and drought. And it feels wrong.(我们现在正处在一个由炎热和干旱造成的假秋天。这感觉不对。)”,文章第二段“There is, therefore, something deeply disturbing about such a graphic alteration of familiar rhythms.( 因此,这种对熟悉节奏的形象改变令人深感不安。)”、文章第三段“Cultures across the world contain ceremonies for the propitiation of the weather; a sense of responsibility for the natural world—and the belief that it will punish us if we fail it—is as old as humanity.( 世界各地的文化都有庆祝天气平息的仪式;对自然世界的责任感——相信如果我们辜负了自然世界,自然世界就会惩罚我们——和人类一样古老。)”和文章最后一段“Now we must hope we are doing enough to make sure that these fearful golden days are pot an autumn of autumns.(现在,我们必须希望我们正在做的足够多,以确保这些可怕的黄金日子成为一个真正秋天中的秋天。)”可知,文章讲述了气候变暖导致秋天变成了“假秋天”,呼吁人们将这种现象视为警告,采取措施阻止全球变暖进一步恶化。由此可推知,作者写这篇文章的整体基调是担心的。故选B。

Tips to Keep Your Personal Items Safe While Travelling
【答案】67.D 68.F 69.B 70.E
【难度】0.65
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些好的方法以帮助我们在旅行时更好地保护个人物品安全。
67.根据空前“In a case reported, two men on board a flight were arrested after being suspected of stealing cash from fellow passengers’ mid-flight.(据报道,在一起案件中,一架飞机上的两名男子因涉嫌在飞行途中从其他乘客那里偷钱而被捕。)”以及空后“While airlines don’t advertise the fact, they’re not as rare as you may think.(虽然航空公司不宣传这一事实,但它们并不像你想象的那么罕见。)”可知,空处和在飞行途中的偷窃相关。选项D“Cases like this are known as in-flight, or mid-flight thefts.(像这样的案件被称为飞行中或飞行中盗窃。)”与上下文内容相一致,指的是在飞行中盗窃。故选D。
68.空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“This is especially important if you have a black, featureless bag. For example, you can sew a symbol on it or write your initials on the bag.(如果你有一个黑色的、毫无特色的包,这一点尤其重要。例如,你可以在上面缝一个符号,或者在包上写上你名字的首字母。)”可判断,本段讲述的是要让自己的包很容易辨认。选项F“Make sure your bag is easily recognizable so thieves can’t just switch it out with a similar looking bag.(确保你的包很容易辨认,这样小偷就不会把它换成一个看起来很像的包。)”与下文内容一致,指的是要确保自己的包很容易辨认。故选F。
69.根据空前“Keep your valuables such as cash, your ID and passport, and jewellery in a small bag that you can place under the seat in front of you. Rest your feet on your bag to make sure no one gets close to the bag.(把你的贵重物品,如现金、身份证、护照和珠宝放在一个小袋子里,放在你前面的座位下面。把你的脚放在你的包上,确保没有人靠近你的包。)”以及空后“It takes just a few seconds for experienced thieves to steal your bag, so never give them the opportunity by leaving it unattended.(经验丰富的小偷只需要几秒钟就能偷走你的包,所以千万不要给他们机会,把包放在无人看管的地方。)”可知,本段讲述的是要看好自己的包,不要让自己的包离开自己的视线。选项B“Bring it with you whenever you leave your seat.(当你离开座位的时候带上它。)”是上文内容的自然延续,同时引出下文内容。故选B。
70.空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“For example, you can divide your cash into three portions and keep some in your small bag, some in a pair of jeans that’s rolled up in your checked baggage, and some in your toiletries bag (化妆包). In this way, even if you lose one stash of money, you will not be left with absolutely no cash.(例如,你可以把你的现金分成三份,一些放在你的小包里,一些放在一条牛仔裤里,卷在你的托运行李里,还有一些放在你的洗漱包里。这样,即使你失去了一笔钱,你也不会完全没有现金。)”可知,在本段中,作者主要建议我们不要把现金等放在一起,分下来放,这样即便丢失一份,也不会失去全部。选项E“Keep your cash or credit cards in different hiding places.(把现金或信用卡藏在不同的地方。)”与下文内容一致,指的是不要把现金放在一起。故选E。

V. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
72.请随时按照你的方便联系我,安排面试时间。
【答案】Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to set up a time for our interview.
【难度】0.85
【详解】考查祈使句和固定短语。“请”是please,句子是祈使句,其后跟动词原形,“随时做某事”是feel free to do sth.,“按照你的方便”是at your convenience,“联系我”是contact me,“安排”是set up,用不定式表目的,“面试时间”是a time for our interview,因此整句话翻译为“Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to set up a time for our interview”。故答案为Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to set up a time for our interview.
73.学生们正要冲去食堂,老师突然来宣布一个好消息。(about)
【答案】The students were about to rush to the canteen when the teacher suddenly announced good news.
【难度】0.65
【详解】考查时态,从句和短语。根据句意可知,用一般过去时,结合提示词about可推断,用固定句型:be about to do sth. when...“即将做某事,这时候……”,主句主语the students,是复数,谓语用复数were about to rush to the canteen“正要冲去食堂”,从句主语the teacher“老师”,suddenly“突然地”,谓语announced“宣布”,good news“好消息”,故译为The students were about to rush to the canteen when the teacher suddenly announced good news.
74.艺术家们赞不绝口的中国山水画展现了对人与自然和谐关系的追求。(praise n.)
【答案】Chinese landscape paintings, which win high praise from artists, show the pursuit of a harmonious relationship between man and nature.
【难度】0.65
【详解】考查短语、时态、语态和定语从句。 landscape painting山水画,风景画;the pursuit of……的追求;harmonious relationship和谐关系;between...and...在……和……之间。句中先行词为Chinese landscape paintings,在非限定性定语从句中作主语,所以用关系代词which引导。且与动词praise之间为被动关系,所以用被动语态。陈述客观事实,用一般现在时。根据句意,故翻译为Chinese landscape paintings, which are highly praised by artists, show the pursuit of a harmonious relationship between man and nature.
75.遍布街头大大小小的咖啡馆错落有致,满足了都市人适应快节奏生活的需求。(adapt)
【答案】Large and small cafes are scattered all over the streets, meeting the needs of urban people to adapt to the fast-paced life.
Large and small cafes are scattered all over the streets;“满足……需求”可表达为短语meet the needs of,根据提示词,“适应”可用动词短语adapt to表示,“都市人”翻译为unban people,“快节奏生活”译为the fast-paced life,“满足了都市人适应快节奏生活的需求”在句中作结果状语,可用现在分词表示,即meeting the needs of urban people to adapt to the fast-paced life。故答案为Large and small cafes are scattered all over the streets, meeting the needs of urban people to adapt to the fast-paced life.
