However, on Wednesday, they announced that they would give up the sport. With an average age of 60, the diving grandpas have much experience in diving. They started as a group of local diving lovers. They went swimming in the city’s rivers, and later they tried their hand at diving. The hobby has now lasted for more than thirty years. Videos on the Internet have drawn lots of tourists from across the country to the Shizilin Bridge over the Haihe River, where “diving grandpas” perform diving. However, some inexperienced divers, trying to follow“ diving grandpas”, have met with accidents and got themselves injured. Some of the grandpas have begun volunteering to keep order for the crowds that come to see the performance on the bridge. However, accidents still continued to happen. As reported, members of the Blue Sky Rescue team in Tianjin said that they rescued 14 people at the risk of drowning or other injuries in just two days. The grandpas then made a difficult decision. They stopped diving off the bridge. They also prevented inexperienced locals and children as well as tourists from diving from the bridge . C Believe it or not, humans have been in debt to Earth Overshoot Day this month. Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 8th. As of that day, we had used as much from nature in 2016 as our planet can provide in a whole year. In other words, we have run out of this year's “ecological budget”, and for the rest of the year we'll be eating into our “savings”. Global Footprint Network has been watching Earth Overshoot Day since 1971. This year, the day came five days earlier than it did last year (Aug.13th), 11 days earlier than the year before last year(Aug.19th) and is the earliest date yet. Global Footprint Network said that humans now use 1.6 Earths' worth of crops, forest, livestock, energy and other resources every year. By the 2030s we will be using more than two Earths' worth of resources every year. The situation is more and more serious and the world needs to find a better balance in how to use the Earth's resources. Overshoot Day is a red light warning of trouble ahead. “That is, we're using up what our planet does for us, so year after year, there is less for us to use, ” Stuart Pimm, an American professor of ecology, explained. “Less forest, fewer fish in the ocean, and less productive land.” Two of the main causes are overpopulation and pollution. Small actions make a big difference and all of us play an important role in creating  a better world where we live. Even a few simple changes around our home can reduce waste, from taking a shower instead of a bath to using our own reusable bags at a store instead of ones that are made of plastics. In this way we can reduce waste and pollution. Let's start today to live greener in no time. 28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A.Earth Overshoot Day is coming earlier and earlier. B.Earth Overshoot Day falls on Aug.19th. C.Humans will have to spend more money for the rest of the year. D.Humans have used as many resources this year as we did last year. 29.According to Global Footprint Network, which of the following is TRUE? A.By the 2030s there will be no resources left on Earth. B.Humans need to find better ways to use resources properly. C.Humans use more than 1.6 Earths' worth of resources every year. D.Aug. 13th is the earliest date of Earth Overshoot Day since 1971. 30.Which one can't help us reduce waste? A.Taking a shower. B.Taking a bath. C.Using reusable bags. D.Recycling waste water. 31.Which can be the best title for the passage? A.Living a Saving Life B.Aug.8th—an Important Day C.Small Actions Make a Big Difference D.Eating up Our Planet D What’s your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them. Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality (性格) more than anything else, CBC News reported. “We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study. But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster. In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it. By comparing the answers to the questionnaires and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water. Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained. 32.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph? A.Dislike. B.Fear. C.Put up with. D.Adapt to. 33.What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study? A.What we eat actually helps to develop our personality. B.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females. C.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food. D.People are wrong to treat " spicy" as a kind of taste rather than a feeling. 34.Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study? A.Because their taste has become less sensitive. B.Because they love the burning feeling. C.Because they want to challenge themselves. D.Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns. 35.What’s the main idea of the passage? A.What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality. B.Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality. C.One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste. D.Different people have different taste. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tea originated (起源) in China over two thousand years ago. Today, the country owns over 2, 000 kinds of tea. 36 Some kinds of tea, such as Huang Shan, refresh the sense of taste with their special flavor, while others, such as spicy chai, are added with spices (香料). 37 And since then the drink has been people’s leading drinking habits far beyond Asia. It is the most widely consumed drink on Earth today along with water and coffee. In Chinese history, tea was first discovered by Chinese Emperor Shennong in 737BC, when a soft wind carried some leaves into a pot of boiling water. However, the oldest dependable evidence comes from ancient plant remains found in 2016 in Xi’an and western Tibet. It shows that tea was grown at least 2, 100 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty. 38 Generation after generation of tea makers experimented with different brewing (冲泡) techniques, leaves, and ceremonies. 39 China’s tea culture has become one of the most popular, diverse, and unique traditions in the world. 40 The inclusion (包含) of the country’s traditional tea-making process on the UNESCO list will obviously generate practical benefits for tea makers in the country and across the world as more resources are given to protect and preserve such old tea culture and technical practices. A.Water is very important for making tea. B.People had better drink it when it is hot. C.They are different in taste, sweet and purpose. D.That has contributed to today’s tea culture full of life. E.It was most likely used as medicine during that period. F.China is already the world’s largest tea exporter (输出国). She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical(有魔力的). It was time to go home.”Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed(叹气). As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path. Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn't want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I'm going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots, of competitions. But when I'm in a race, I'm not really thinking about winning. I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water...” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really have something magic about it. The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. A.Living a Saving Life B.Aug.8th—an Important Day C.Small Actions Make a Big Difference D.Eating up Our Planet 28.A 29.B 30.B 31.D 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了8月8日是地球生态超载日,这一日期正变得越来越早了。文章介绍了人类对地球资源的消耗情况,建议人们从小事做起,减少浪费和污染。 28.细节理解题。根据第二段中“This year, the day came five days earlier than it did last year(Aug.13th), 11 days earlier than the year before last year(Aug.19th) and is the earliest date yet.(今年比去年(8月13日)提前了5天,比前年(8月19日)提前了11天,是最早的一天)”可知,地球生态超载日越来越早了。故选A。 29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The situation is more and more serious and the world needs to find a better balance in how to use the Earth's resources.(情况越来越严重,世界需要对如何使用地球的资源找到一个更好的平衡)”可知,B选项“人类需要找到更好的方法来正确使用资源”正确。故选B。 30.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Even a few simple changes around our home can reduce waste, from taking a shower instead of a bath to using our own reusable bags at a store instead of ones that are made of plastics.(即使是在家里做一些简单的改变也能减少浪费,从用淋浴代替泡澡,到在商店用我们自己的可重复使用的塑料袋代替塑料包装袋)”可知,泡澡不能帮助我们减少浪费。故选B。 31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Believe it or not, humans have been in debt to Earth Overshoot Day this month. Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 8th. As of that day, we had used as much from nature in 2016 as our planet can provide in a whole year. 32.A 33.C 34.B 35.B 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。研究说明人们喜欢吃辣味的食物跟一个人的性格有关。 32.考查词义猜测。根据第二段第一句“ Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it”中的while意为“而,然而”,表示对比,故loathe应该与love意思相对。A项Dislike意为“不喜欢”,符合语境。 故选A项。 33.考查推理判断。根据第四段中最后一句“ This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding roller coaster”以及倒数第二段中的 “ those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water”可知,研究发现那些倾向于看动作片和冒险的人可能会更喜欢辣味的食物。故C项正确。 34.考查细节理解。根据文章最后一段第一句“Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it.”可知,人们喜欢吃辣的食物是因为人们喜欢燃烧的感觉。故选B项正确。 35.考查主旨大意。根据第二段最后一句“But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality (性格) more than anything else, CBC News reported.” Tea originated (起源) in China over two thousand years ago. In Chinese history, tea was first discovered by Chinese Emperor Shen nong in 737BC, when a soft wind carried some leaves into a pot of boiling water. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.” 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny's speech first. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 67.One possible version: Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. Jenny thought to herself, “How could I explain about the watch and its magic? No one could believe it.” Jenny just returned the watch and looked at him, feeling sorry for what she had done and saying in a low voice, “No, I didn’t steal your ‘magical watch’. I picked it up yesterday, but……” Miss Walker smiled to Jenny and continued, “But you planned to return the ‘magical watch’ after your speech, right? ” Jenny nodded and for a moment remained silent. Miss Walker continued, “I believe you would do like that, my brave girl.” Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. Jenny walked slowly and collected all her courage to stand in front of the whole class. Suddenly she saw Miss Walker’s encouraging eyes. Jenny took a deep breath. “I am going to talk about swimming......” Ten minutes later, the whole class stood up applauding Jenny’s wonderful speech. Jenny made it even without the“magical watch”. She came to know that confidence never goes with anything but belief. Jenny smiled happily.
