The proposal for a new Indonesian capital city has
been in the cards ever since the country gained
independence in 1945. The political and economic crises
which followed have long delayed the plan, but the
current president,Joko Widodo,now appears determined
to make the move a reality. The government officially
confirmed that the capital will be moved from Jakarta to a
new location within Kalimantan, part of the island of
Borneo in Indonesia.
A number of factors are likely to have influenced the
decision to forge ahead with the move, but it seems likely
that Jakartas environmental problems are chief among them.
Built on swampy(沼泽的)ground,Jakarta is sinking,in
some parts at a rate of 20 cm a year. Experts predict that
most of North Jakarta could sink beneath the sea by 2050.
Whats more,Jakarta is rarely mentioned without reference
to its extreme levels of traffic jams and air pollution. There
could be other reasons too. John McCarthy,an expert on land
use in Kalimantan at the Australian National University
Crawford School, points to a potential desire to spread
wealth throughout Indonesia. “Jakarta is the most highly
developed core of Indonesia which attracts all the money and
opportunities from other areas,”he says. “I think theres
logic in splitting the economic and political capital.”
But the location of this new political center is
proving controversial. Some environmental groups are
concerned that the chosen location in East Kalimantan
will increase logging and destruction of nearby forests,
home to orangutans and other endangered species.
Indonesias Planning Minister previously told reporters
that the new capital will be a sustainable“forest city”that
wont result in the destruction of protected forests, but
how exactly this would work has not yet been explained.
Despite these challenges, the government is now
putting its plan in motion. But even if this new capital is
built,Jakarta will still need protection. Home to millions of
people, the city simply cant be neglected.
7. What is the Indonesian governments new plan? D
A. Building a forest city.
B. Developing resources of Borneo.
C. Electing a new president.
D. Relocating the capital city.
8. What may be the main reason for the governments
decision? B
A. To reduce land pollution.
B. To seek a better living environment.
C. To make full use of swampy ground.
D. To balance the economic growth between citi
es.
—174—
9. What worries some groups about the governments
choice? B
A. It may cost a lot of money.
B. It may destroy the local ecosystem.
C. It may disrupt many residents normal life.
D. It may cause the decline of the old capital city.
10. What does the underlined word“neglected”probably
mean? A
A. Ignored. B. Ranked.
C. Repaired. D. Damaged.

练案[8] 必修第二册 UNIT 2 WILDLIFE PROTECTION
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2023·日照市校际联合考试)
Every year from May to July, tens of thousands of
Tibetan antelopes from regions in Qinghai, the Tibet
autonomous region, and the Xinjiang autonomous region
make their way to the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve in Qinghai
to give birth. The mothers and newborn Tibetan antelopes
make the return trip around August.
This journey is rather tough. More than 90 percent of
the female animals give birth every year, but only about
30 percent of the newborns survive. Many of them die on
the return journey, unable to withstand the predators(捕
食性动物)and diseases. The government has adopted
some hightech methods to assist in the safe return of
newborn antelopes and protect the species.
In 2013,with the help of the Beidou Navigation
Satellite System,researchers discovered and confirmed
the largest Tibetan antelope “birth room”on the Qinghai
Tibet Plateau, and they mapped the migration routes of
Tibetan antelopes. Since late 2018,a solarpowered drone
has been used to monitor the migration herds.“The solar
powered drone has a long flying time with highresolution
cameras, which gives us a new understanding of many
specific routes during the migration of Tibetan
antelopes,” said Wu Xiaomin, an expert from the
Shaanxi Institute of Zoology. “For example, the nomads
(游牧民)put fences on the grassland to protect the
grass, but sometimes these hinder the normal activity of
the Tibetan antelopes.”
To clear the way for the Tibetan antelopes, the
government of Tibet has taken action in recent years to
give more protected space to wildlife. They relocate
nomads from places at altitudes above 4,800 meters to
other places in the region.
Known as“plateau elves”,Tibetan antelopes have
adapted to the unique and severe natural conditions of the
QinghaiTibet Plateau. According to Wu, the Tibetan
antelope is recognized as an important indicator species of
the natural ecosystem.
The population of Tibetan antelopes has grown.
“With a recorded low population of fewer than 20,000 in
Qinghai, the number has now reached over 70,000,”said
former Qinghai governor Xin Changxing at an event to
mark World Environment Day.
1. What can we learn about Tibetan antelopes? D
A. They travel to Hoh Xil to find partners.
B. Only 30 percent of them give birth every year.
C. Their yearly trip to the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve
takes about one month.
D. The newborns are threatened by diseases and predators.
2. What is the solarpowered drone mainly used for? C
A. Locating the Tibetan antelope “birth room”.
B. Recording Tibetan antelopes daily activities.
C. Watching over the migrating Tibetan antelopes.
D. Mapping the migration routes of Tibetan ant
elopes.

Cultural heritage is the common treasure of mankind. It provides a
strong symbol of the past from which we can reflect on the present and
future. Cultural heritage is unique and cant be replaced once it has
gone. Therefore,it is important to protect cultural heritage because
preserving it promises great benefits for the future.
The public should promote the awareness of cultural heritage
protection. Countries should team up with one another to work out
practical plans regarding cultural heritage protection. As senior students,
we can help protect cultural heritage by making visitors respect its history.
Every little effort counts. It is my firm belief that only with joined
efforts can we have a better tomorrow.
