B (2023·浙江省浙里卷天下) As I walked into my new high school for the first time,I felt uncertain, nervous and lonely. I missed my old friends terribly. My head hurt with the thought of making new friends all over again. What will my new friends be like? Will we like each other? Will I even make a friend? These questions were on my mind,as I walked over to a group of girls. I didnt know anyone in my new school. It seemed like everyone was watching me,as if every head was turning towards me,waiting for me to make a wrong move. I nervously said “hi”in a low voice, waving my hand at the group. Expecting them to start laughing and making fun of me,I was surprised when they waved back and asked me to sit with them. As if a switch had been turned off,all the anxious thoughts that had been killing me were gone. A feeling of acceptance and excitement rushed over me as I happily chatted with the six girls, telling them more about myself. Looking back at how anxious I was upon entering my new school for the first time,I now feel stupid, for I had been losing my sleep over something so small. Being myself and being polite had worked out for me just fine. Being confident proved to be the key that fit perfectly into the lock on the door of friendship, the same door that I                                                                    had been too scared to even knock on before. —154— I had never expected that by the end of the day I would have any friends at all,let alone six. What I learned from my experience was to welcome everyday surprises with open arms and to accept the good or bad feelings that fill our hearts, the same place where love lives and where new friends are welcomed. 4. Why did the author mention those questions in Paragraph 2? B A. To express her needs. B. To show her nervousness. C. To show her hunger for knowledge. D. To express her doubts about friendship. 5. What was unexpected to the author? B A. Being accepted by all the students. B. The invitation from the group of girls. C. Being laughed at by the group of girls. D. The attention all the students paid to her. 6. What advice might the author give to new high school students? C A. Get enough sleep. B. Keep in touch with old friends. C. Believe in yourself. D. Avoid saying something stupid. 7. What is the best title for the text? C A. Every dog has his day B. Every bean has its black C. Each new day holds a surprise D. Each one thinks in his own way C (2024·九省联考适应性测试) In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People,Dale Carnegie wrote:“I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument—and that is to avoid it.”This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place. Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal(言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win,you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions—like, say, tennis tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments. However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate(阐述)an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise objections(异议)and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it. These tools can help you win every argument—not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to “win”an argument. 8. What is the authors attitude toward Carnegies understanding of argument? A A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncertain. 9. Why do many people try to avoid arguments? B A. They lack debating skills. B. They may feel bad even if they win. C. They fear being ignored. D. They are not confident in themselves. 10. What does the underlined phrase “spell out”in Paragraph 3 probably mean? B A. Defend. B. Explain. C. Conclude. D. Repeat. 11. What is the key to“winning”an argument according to the author? D A. Sense of logic. B. Solid supporting evidence. C. Proper manners.                                                                        D. Ever since then, whenever it comes up in conversation,I am met with the following question:“What is FYSOP?”1. A FYSOP stands for FirstYear Student Outreach Project, which focuses around a week of service to the city of Oxford and its various neighborhoods. 2. C They volunteer for the Oxford community at local sites helping out schools, parks or nonprofit organizations. Students are divided into groups and led by student leaders. These leaders ensure that each place is prepared and that the students get there safely. 3. G In this way the incoming students are able to reflect on what it means to give back and to be a part of the community. These conversations are important for incoming students because of the change they experience starting out in college. 4. D Students obtain valuable volunteer experiences and meet new people. Also,FYSOP participants get to move in a week earlier than most other students. This means that you get to skip out on the hurried move in schedule and might even get a slightly cheaper flight than if you were moving in with the other 140,000 college students. 5. E Through my personal experience,I met some of my best friends, got a better understanding of the layout (布局)of Oxford, and really enjoyed volunteering at various nonprofits. If you are not, maybe consider staffing FYSOP in the future. A. Heres a brief introduction. B. Heres why it has been established. C. The participants are all incoming students. D. There are so many bonuses being a part of FYSOP! E. If youre an incoming student,FYSOP is worth looking into. F. Both the community and the students benefit a lot from the project. G. Campus is a 25minute walk from my hall, which is across the river and down Fleet Street. There,in The London School of Economics and Political Science(LSE),I take courses in social policy, philosophy and public policy, public management and behavioural economics. In the first few weeks we covered how to measure wellbeing, how to distribute health care resources, and the origins of the welfare state,to name only a few. Ive had great support from my academic adviser, who I was told is really somebody and highly respected in the field of social policy. I learn loads of things each day and more importantly, what I learn feels relevant. Looking back,I can better understand the work I did in the government, and how the approaches Ive learned work or fail in other situations. After one term,I can feel my viewpoint change from 50 feet to 50,000 feet. Probably the most difficult part of attending graduate school overseas isnt the education itself but rather the act of “putting the previous life on hold”. I think this is especially true for students who have already started their professional life or are a couple of years older. But there are plenty of benefits, and I feel that time at LSE passes faster than I realize. Already,Ive made friends with students from dozens of other countries, which brings great advantages and fun. Perhaps what unites us is the great British tradition of meeting each other at the end of the week for entertainment at the cafe. In fact,Im about to make my way there now. 1. His life attitude varies with time. 3. Which might be the hardest for overseas students? D A. Dealing with the heavy study load. B. Gaining an understanding of British traditions. C. Being used to the local educational system. D. Leaving ones former life behind temporarily. 4. What message about the author is implied in the last paragraph? A A. He is going to join a gettogether for fun. B. He decides to go after his professional life. C. He wants to make friends with more students. D.
