properly. There are now forty dogs working with
children aged from six to eighteen.
M: I hope the children love them.
W: Of course they do. I’ve got some pictures. mI’ll show
them at my presentation tomorrow morning.

M: nEmily, thank you for taking time out of your
busy schedule to answer a few questions.
W: It’s my pleasure.
M: People say you’re doing unpaid work in the new
season of My Fair Lady. Is this what the show
business has become?
W: No, not really. oAll of my acting in the new season
is unpaid, but the crew is paid. This is to raise
money for the post-production of the show.
M: I notice you’ve tried many different kinds of things:
film, TV and even theatre.
W: pYeah, that’s how I was trained at university. I
work on anything that excites me.
M: Tell us about the six months you recently spent at the
workshop of the Film Centre.
W: qIt was an unbelievable experience—teaching
young actors and actresses and working with some
great acting artists. qIt was also great to work
in various labs such as directors, writers and
so on. It’s very helpful for making you a really
well-rounded and active member of the film and
television industry.
M: Thank you very much, Emily. We look forward to
your new season.

rHi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of
our club. We’ve been fortunate to have got good
advice from some famous athletes on how to improve
our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear
something different. We’re honored to have Emma
Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer
from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma
worked for a football team in Manchester, sthen for
a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally
ended up working here in Vancouver. tEmma says
it’s challenging to be a health expert because people
can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack
scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change
their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much
confusing information online. It’s really important to
hear what experts say, and that’s why we’ve invited
Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything
we should eat, but she will teach us to make better
choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

M: Okay, thanks, Professor Jackson.

W: This neighborhood really needs a library. How can
we get one?
M: I think we should have a meeting to talk about it.

Text 4
W: Hi, Jim. How’s your new job going?
M: It’s very exciting. And I’m really learning a lot, but
it’s also quite tiring. I feel like a good break this
weekend.
Text 5
M: Amanda. What skill would you like to develop?
W: Well, I want to learn to play the guitar. I love writing
songs, you know. And I think it would be lovely if
I could play my own music and entertain people.

M: Hello, City Bank. Can I help you?
W: fHi, I’m calling for information on opening a
savings account.
M: Have you had any accounts in our bank before?
W: No, I don’t think so.
M: Then you have to go in person to one of our branches
and talk to a clerk there.
W: I see. Is there a bank near Brown College?
M: gWe have one branch at 135 Dudley Road and one
at 512 Kingfield Street.
W: gI think I will go to the one on Dudley. Thank you.

W: Good morning. Frank Sampson’s.
M: Good morning. This is Peter Clifford from Smart

now. Would you like to leave a message or call
back later?
M: What time is the meeting over?
W: iWell, it started at one o’clock and it usually lasts
about two hours.
M: All right. In that case, could you please tell him
to check his email? I’ve sent him an important
document. I’m waiting for his reply.
W: Certainly. Anything else, sir?
M: jYes, I’d like to know what would be the best time
for us to meet before Friday. I must meet him this
week. Please tell him to include the time in his reply.
W: Do you want to meet him in our office or in your
office, sir?
M: Oh, either is fine.
W: All right, sir. I’ll tell him when he is back.

M: Hi, Annie. That’s a very lovely bunch of flowers.
W: kIt’s for my sister. It’s her graduation day today.
M: It must have cost you a fortune.
W: I paid $60 for it, but it’s worth it. kJane worked
very hard for her degree over the last four years.
Today is a very important day for her. And I want
it to be special.
M: That’s very nice of you. mI wish it were our
graduation day too.
W: mAnother three years and we’ll be done too.
M: Where are they going to hold the graduation
ceremony?
W: In the Conference Hall at 2 p.m. It’ll be a big
ceremony.
M: lI guess you should be there early, otherwise you
won’t get a seat.
W: Yes. I’ll try to find a seat close to the stage. I want to
take some good pictures of my sister.
M: Have fun, Annie. Give Jane my best wishes.
W: Thanks. Bye, Steve.
Text 9
W: nOh, I can’t believe it. Peter, I haven’t seen you

W: Can you turn the music off? I can’t concentrate on
my study.
M: Sorry, Jane. I thought you had finished your final
exam already.
W: Not until this Thursday.
Text 4
M: Hi, Julia. Are you here on holiday?
W: Yes, it’s a beautiful town and it’s so sunny here.
So sad it’s my last day here.
Text 5
M: Hi, Lee, I know you are from Seoul. I heard there
are animal cafés in your city. Is that true?
W: Yes, actually there is one near my apartment.
I often go there. It’s great fun working on the
computer surrounded by lovely animals.
Text 6
W: Do you know what I want to do next summer? gMy
goal is to climb Black Mountain.
M: gAre you serious? Black Mountain is too hard to
climb. Don’t you need special equipment, such as a
time to sit down?
M: I was leaving, but I can join you for a few minutes.
W: Great. So tell me how is your family?
M: Well, it keeps getting bigger. oWe have four kids
now, all boys.
W: Four boys? I suppose they keep you busy.
M: They sure do. The baby is only one month old, so
Sally is not working right now. And what’s new with
you and Jim?
W: Believe it or not. He’s home with the kids.
M: You’re kidding.
W: No, I’m not. pJim chose to work from home, so we
could spend less on child care. I love it, because he
does all the shopping and cleaning.
M: Good point. Yikes, it’s already 12:30. I have to
go now. qI have an important meeting this
afternoon. Tell Jim I said hi. And I’ll call you, so
we can have dinner sometime.
W: Great. And say hi to Sally and the kids. See you.
M: See you.

Good evening, everyone. I’m Jennifer Green. Thanks
for joining us. rIn today’s edition of Perfect Life, our
guest is Brock Bastian, a social psychologist from the
University of Melbourne. Professor Bastian’s research
focuses on pain, happiness and morality. sRecently, he
published a book on the role of pain in promoting
pleasure. The title of the book is The Other Side of
Happiness. In this book, he argues that as we seek
to escape pain or sorrow, we’re weakening ourselves
and may lose our adaptive ability to deal with pain in
the future. sPainful experiences are in fact vital for
our development and how we face the unavoidable
challenges ahead and they play a key role in helping
us develop our ability to feel truly happy. tNow, let’s
welcome Professor Bastian to talk about his ideas in
the book.
