Text 1
W: Hi, Stewart. It’s nice to see you here. Are you also
looking for the book for our science class?
M: No, not really. I want to buy a story book.
Text 2
M: Mary. I’m sorry. I can’t pick you up at the airport
this afternoon. I have to visit an important
customer.
W: That’s okay. I can go home by taxi.
M: Thank you, dear. I’ll be home early and let’s eat out
tonight.
Text 3
W: Doctor Anderson’s office. May I help you?
M: I’d like to have Doctor Anderson examined my
teeth. Can I come tomorrow?
W: Let me see. I’m afraid Doctor Anderson won’t be
able to see you tomorrow. What about Thursday
then?
Text 4
W: Excuse me, could you show me the way to the
cinema, please?
M: Sorry, but I’m a stranger here myself.
Text 5
M: Jane, why are you here in the office? I thought you
were leaving for New York today.
W: Yes, but my flight is not until this evening.
M: I see. Then I can give you a ride to the airport after
work.
W: Thank you, Kevin. That’s very nice of you.
Text 6
W: fExcuse me, I’m lost. How do I get to the market?
M: You’re a bit far from there. I hope you are not in a
hurry.
W: No, I just need to buy some food. Which way should
I go?
M: Go straight the following blocks, then turn left and
walk about 2 blocks. gThe market is on the right
side of the street. You can take a bus at the next
crossroads.
W: gHow long does it take if I walk there?
fifth year.
W: Where do you study?
M: In London. I enjoy living in London.
W: pI sometimes travel to different parts of Britain
with my boss to do interpreting for him. Next
week, he has a conference in London.
M: Will you have time to call and visit me while you’re
in the area?
W: Yes, I’d love to.
M: I’ll give you my phone number. Ring me in the
evening.
W: Thank you. We’ll be able to have more time to catch up.

Welcome aboard our city tour bus. rFirst, let me
tell you about the tour. We’re going to travel through
the most historic parts of the city for about an hour,
with lots of chances for you to take photos or just
enjoy the wonderful buildings like the City Hall and
the Royal Theater. Then, we’ll drop you off at the
museum. You have about two hours there. sAt 11:30,
we’ll start for our next destination—the Stanley
Market. You may buy some fruit and cheese from the
marketplace and have a light meal in the park nearby.
But please, please, please come back on time at 1:30 p.m.
We can’t wait for any latecomers. tNow, I’ll give you
some instructions on safety.
65
M: gAround 30 minutes.
W: gThat’s not far away. Thank you.
Text 7
W: David, have you heard the news? Our school team is
in the finals.
M: I know. hI watched the match on TV last night.
W: Do you think they were good?
M: They certainly were. A group of us have decided to
go and support them in the finals. Will you come
along, too?
W: I’m not sure. When is it?
M: iIt’s on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 and we’ll get
at the school gate at 3:00. So, are you coming?
W: No. I don’t think so. I’ve got piano lessons at 2:30
every Saturday.
M: Can’t you have it on another day?
W: But my mother really likes it.
M: Come on, Lisa. This is the finals. Our school team
has been working hard and they need our support.
W: jWell, let me talk with my mom first, okay?
M: Once you have made a decision, just give me a call.
Text 8
W: Oh. That’s the second bus that has gone on my
phone. I wonder where all the people come from.
M: kI really think they should let more people on at
this time of the day when there’re so many people
going to work.
W: mBut they won’t allow people to stand on the bus.
You know, too dangerous.
M: I don’t mind that. Look.
W: lI think that is an 11, isn’t it?
M: No, I’m afraid not. It’s 17. I think I’ll go by
underground tomorrow.
W: mNo, not me, I can’t stand all stuck in standing.
Besides, I need to look at the scenery.
M: I see what you mean. Oh. Here comes a number of
them, two, no, three. Anyway, we are sure to get on
one of them.
Text 9
W: Hi, my name is Anne Smith.
M: Hi, I’m Bill Harrington.
W: Mr. Harrington, I need to ask you a few questions
before I show you what we have. First, what price
can you accept?
M: Somewhere between 800 and 900 rent a month?
W: Okay, did you have a particular place in mind?
M: oWell, I would like to live somewhere near the
university or at least on the bus line. I have a
class to attend early in the morning.
W: Okay. Are there any other things you would like to
have? For example, a dishwasher, a swimming pool
or an air conditioner?
M: I would certainly like to have a dishwasher and
something of like this air conditioning would be
necessary. Oh, Yes. And two bedrooms will be nice.
W: Okay. pHere are photos of the flats that meet your
requirements.
M: Thank you. This one past the street looks nice. I
would like to see it and the one on Main Street.
W: pSure, let me get the keys and we can go right
away.
M: pGreat. Thank you.

Hi, everybody. Welcome to the Sea Life Centre. This
is an extremely exciting place with so many things to
see. qIt costs £4 with grown-ups and £2 for children.
It opens at 8:30 a.m. every day of the year except the
25th and 26th of December when the centre is closed.
rSpecial attractions to the children include the
hourly feeding times for all the different fish. Starting
66
at 9:30 a.m., you can see everything here from the
biggest fish to the smallest. sEvery morning from
10:00, there are short films for children in the Sea
Life Theatre.
Someone is always there to answer questions about
what she’s seen. tThe latest attraction of the centre is
a big glass passage you can walk through all around
you. You’ll see fish swimming sometimes even over
your head. You certainly have a fierce possible view
of the underwater world children like. It’s really
amazing for grown-ups, too. I’m sure you have a good
time here.
Text 1
M: Jenny, you can just drop me here.
W: But we’re two streets away from the office.
M: It’s fine. I had a big breakfast and feel like a bit of
walk.
Text 2
W: Hello, George. You look tired. Didn’t sleep well last
night?
M: No, not at all. I had to work flat out to meet the
project deadline. Now I’m really feeling a bit run-
down.
Text 3
W: John, can’t we go someplace and talk? It’s so noisy
in here.
M: Well, there’s a small park across the street. It’s
usually not crowded at this time of day.
Text 4
W: We’ve got to do something about the neighbor’s dog.
M: Why? Has he been into your flower garden again?
W: The flower garden, the garbage can and yesterday
he started digging holes in the yard.
Text 5
M: Hello, we have a reservation in the name of
Mr. Jones. Is there any table by the window?
W: Sorry, we’ve got this corner table for you. It’s quiet
here, not close to the door.
Text 6
W: fDave, don’t forget we are invited out to dinner
tonight.
M: Oh yeah, I almost forgot. What time?
W: 7:30. gWe should leave the house by 6:30. You
know how bad the traffic is that time of night.
M: It’s informal, isn’t it?
W: Yeah, gyou can wear your new sports jacket, the
one I got you as an anniversary gift.
M: Okay, well, I’ve got to go. gI’ll try to get home a
little earlier today.
W: Good.
Text 7
M: We need to decide exactly when we’re going to
move. Any suggestions?
W: hI think July would be the best time. Our sales
are always down that month. We could move all
the office equipment at a weekend, do everything at
once.
M: I think a weekend’s too short. iMaybe we should do
it department by department.
W: What do you mean?
M: iWell, each week a different department would
move. That way, there would always be people
here to handle customer inquiries, phone calls and
so on.
W: iUm, that’s a good idea.
Text 8
W: So Mr. Peter Cells, I’d be curious to know what were
the early connections in your life that led you into
