Most of us have memories from childhood that go something like this: You' re not leaving the table until you eat all your vegetables. How lucky we were to have nutritious food, even if we had to learn to like it.
According to the Houston Health Department, for nearly one quarter of children living in Houston, Texas, the choice to eat healthily doesn't exist. They are unable to obtain fresh produce, relying entirely on canned and packaged goods. A lack of fresh meat and produce in your diet can lead to increases in depression and obesity (肥胖) and greater risks of heart disease and cancer. A poor diet is also tied to poor performance in school for young children.
Annie Zhu was shocked to find out so many children in Houston lived in food deserts. She was also shocked to see how much fresh food supermarkets throw away every day. So she and her twin sister Shirley went to work. First, they partnered with the Houston Health Department to distribute food at community centers. With the help of a food rescue organization Second Servings, they collected surplus(过剩的) food from grocery stores and began organizing monthly markets. They even connected with human service agencies to provide help beyond food. Lastly, since fresh food needs to be picked up right away, they developed a text- messaging app Fresh Hub, which tells people when and where the markets are.
Each month, Fresh Hub organizes high school students who wear green shirts and go to set up stands of fresh produce, baked goods and packaged meats. The Zhu sisters and the green dream team have distributed over 1,500 pounds of food. And while families are collecting food, volunteers are entertaining kids with art projects that teach healthy eating.
At the end of the day, Annie says they are happy to be making a difference.“ Frustration over the unfair circumstances built into society led us to meet incredible people,” says Annie. “I know I'm not alone on this journey to help the underserved- and I know my journey has only just begun!”
24. What issue in Houston do the Zhu sisters focus on?
A. Poor access to fresh food for kids. B. Kids’ dislike for green vegetables.
C. Food supplies in supermarkets. D. Childhood obesity and illness.

A. Serve as a healthy food provider. B. Collect fresh food from grocery stores.
C. Inform users of fresh produce available. D. Publish authoritative information on food.
26. What are the volunteers assigned to do during the event?
A. Sell fresh produce to the underserved. B. Distribute as much free food as possible.
C. Raise awareness of a healthy diet among kids. D. Tend kids and provide them with healthy food.

Animals being extinct from the Earth is a serious issue. When this happens in order to use their fur or skin for fashion, it is even worse, since it's not even for a matter of human survival. That's why a London zoo decided to make a powerful statement at the Siamese crocodile enclosure (鳄鱼围栏).
When visitors come in expecting to see a crocodile, they' re greeted with the handbag instead, making a very effective and powerful point about illegal wildlife trade and the harm it takes on the species involved.
A sign by the enclosure reads,“ This bag used to be found swimming in slow- moving rivers and streams across Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade.”
Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range. A huge part of the dec line of population is due to humans using their wetland habitat for rice farming , and things only took a turn for the worse when large- scale hunting for their skin for commercial purposes began in the 1950s.
The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was confiscated at a UK airport, according to Benjamin Tapley, leader of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL London Zoo.
Tapley told The Huffington Post,“ We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world. At ZSL, we are working globally with governments and local communities to protect wildlife, support law enforcement(执法) that targets illegal trade networks, empower local communities affected by IWT and reduce demand for threatened wildlife.”
28. Why does the sign say this handbag used to swim?
A. It is made of a crocodile's skin. B. It is made into a crocodile shape.
C. It is light enough to float on water. D. It was kept in flowing river at first.

30. What does the underlined word“ confiscate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Found. B. Made. C. Seized. D. Stolen.
31. What do Tapley's words focus on?
A. The harm IWT caused. B. The purpose to show the handbag.
C. The importance of wildlife protection. D. The crisis endangered animals are facing.

Cows love having an open area of grassland. But in some parts of the world, this is only feasible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being kept inside is not always enjoyable for the cows, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cow owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specially. The program simulates(模拟) grassland in summer and was designed for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cows see red most easily but have a hard time telling the difference between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia—— where the VR headsets were first developed by vets —— found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5. 8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
The cow owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals.“ They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being used around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the“ structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a“ unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the animals
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow's mood and its milk production. They said,“ Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly. ”
32. What does the underlined word“ feasible” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Influential. B. Possible. C. Necessary. D. Meaningful.
33. What's the result of cows wearing the VR headsets?
A. They could tell the difference between blue and green.
B. Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
34. What's Izzet Kocak's possible attitude towards the VR headsets?
A. Favourable. B. Tolerant. C. Uncaring. D. Concerned.
35. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field. B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality. D. A cow with good moods can produce more milk.

Culture is one of the most important concepts within sociology because sociologists recognize that it plays a crucial role in our social lives. 36
Sociologists define the non- material aspects of culture as the values and beliefs, language, communication and practices that arc shared in common by a group of people. Expanding on these categories, culture is made up of our knowledge, common sense, assumptions and expectations. 37 It informs how we walk, sit, carry our bodies and interact with others: how we behave depending on the place, time and“ audience”: and how we express identities of race, class and gender, among others.
38 This aspect of culture includes a wide variety of things, from buildings, technological gadgets and clothing, to film, music, literature and art, among others. Aspects of material culture are more commonly referred to as cultural products.
Sociologists see the two sides of culture —— the material and non- material —— as closely connected. Material culture emerges from and is shaped by the non- material aspects of culture. 39 But it is not a one- way relationship between material and non- material culture. Material culture can also influence the non- material aspects of culture. 40 This is why cultural products tend to follow patterns. What has come before in terms of music, film, television and art, for example, influences the values, beliefs and expectations of those who interact with them, which then, in turn, influence the creation of additional cultural products.
A. It is composed of both non- material and material things.
B. Without culture, we would not have relationships or society.
C. Culture is also what we do and how we behave and perform.
D. Material culture is composed of the things that humans make and use.
E. Culture is different from social structure and economic aspects of society.
F. In other words, what we value, believe and know influences the things that we make.
G. For example, a great documentary film might change people's attitudes and beliefs.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing funny games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables —— my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips(郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other. It was after a tornado that everything changed.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel(漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once- beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear,“ It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella's family returned in their car.

With the aim of supporting people in the flood-hit areas, our school held a donation activity in the lecture hall on
Saturday morning, attracting the active participation of all teachers and students.
At the beginning, our headmaster gave a speech, introducing the situation of the disaster-stricken areas and calling
on people to show love. All the teachers and students responded positively. Then, the school leaders and our teachers
came forward and put money into the donation box one by one. Finally, the student representatives walked onto the
platform and donated the money on behalf of each class. It was full of love and warmth at the activity site.
Not only did this activity help pass love and warmth to the people in need, but also it inspired all the people present.
I believe if united, any difficulty can be overcome.
【读后续写参考范文】
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car. As they stepped out, greeted by the sight of the garden in
ruins, obvious disbelief and sorrow overwhelmed them. Luella dragged her feet slowly towards the dying tulips, knelt
down and petted them gently, tears rolling down her cheeks. Instantly, a pang of sympathy tugged at my heart.
Encouraged by my parents, I approached Luella, hugged her tightly and whispered, “Don’t worry. We are here to help.”
The tearful girl nodded in gratitude. The next hours witnessed all of us shedding sweat for the clean-up. Soon we
managed to restore the order of the garden. In the end, we all felt a bit relieved except Luella.
Even after the debris was cleaned, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden. I was wondering what we
could do to cheer her up when an idea flashed through my mind. I proposed rebuilding the garden, which was approved
of by the people present. Immediately, the reconstruction kicked off. Over the following months, we nurtured the tulips
with great care, watching them grow and blossom. As time went by, I returned to my cheerful self and we became
inseparable friends. Meanwhile, the garden was transformed into a paradise of natural beauty — rows upon rows of
elegant tulips swayed gently in the breeze, injecting vigor and vitality into the garden, symbolizing our friendship.

Text 1
M: How was your trip to London, Daphne?
W: It was fantastic! I visited a lot of places, such as the British Museum and the London Eye. The weather was fine
there. Horrible traffic, though.
Text 2
M: Jenny, have you returned the books you borrowed last month from the library?
W: Oh, no! I nearly forgot it! Er, today is Saturday. I will return them the day after tomorrow. Thank you for reminding
me.
Text 3
W: What is your favorite kind of tea, Andrew? I like black tea with milk.
M: I like green tea, but I don’t put any sugar in it. Some people also like to drink iced green tea, but I’ve never liked it.
W: Me, neither.
Text 4
M: Did you really make this yourself?
W: I sure did. I’ve seen it in cookbooks and in restaurants, but it was my mother who taught me how to cook it.
M: It tastes really great.
Text 5
W: I haven’t seen Amy for nearly two years. She must have changed a lot.
M: Yeah. The formerly shy girl who hardly ever participated in after-school activities has become one of the most active
players in her class.
W: Really? That’s unbelievable.
Text 6
M: It’s John’s birthday today. We are going to the cinema after school.
W: After school? I have got to study for the maths test tomorrow. When will the film start?
M: At 6: 45.
W: I think I’ll stay in school and review maths, and then I will join you.
M: OK. We’ll get the tickets first. You meet us at Kirsty’s Corner a quarter earlier before the film starts. We’ll be having
some ice creams there before the film starts.
Text 7
M: Sally, what kind of music do you enjoy most besides folk music? Rock?
W: No. I hate rock music. It’s too noisy. Why do you ask?
M: I’ve got two tickets to a concert. Would you like to go with me?
W: What kind of music is it for?
M: Pop. It begins at 7: 00 tomorrow night. And it’ll last 3 hours.
W: Not bad. I’d like to go. How about having dinner first?
M: That’s exactly what I’m thinking about. Do you know any good places for dinner?
W: Of course. Let’s meet at Rose Restaurant opposite Victorian Arts Center.
M: Oh. I know the place. It’s next to Forest Park, right?
W: Yes, that’s right. See you later.
Text 8
M: I’m a little hot after the warm-up exercise.
W: It is good for us to warm up in such a cold day. I think we’re ready to start our tour.
M: Yes. The sign says this building is the oldest part of the castle.
W: Yeah. It’s a pity that there are only empty buildings here now. It would be nice to see what’s inside.
M: We can go to the museum later. There might be something you want to see.
W: Oh, great. I never get tired of looking at things in museums. I love its history.
M: Me, too. It is amazing to think how different life was for the people who lived on this land in the old days. Shall we

Text 9
M: You don’t seem to like the paintings in this room.
W: That’s right. I don’t understand the modern art and I don’t like it at all.
M: If you don’t understand it, how could you say that you don’t like it?
W: Perhaps I am a little narrow-minded and conservative. I really can’t keep pa ce with so many changes nowadays. So,
I just can’t imagine that modern artists are really serious.
M: I won’t argue with you, but I think you’re being unfair. A modern artist is different from a traditional artist in his
work.
W: Are you trying to tell me these strange paintings mean anything? A child could paint better than that.
M: I guess there’s no point in discussing the matter any further. You have your opinion and I have mine.
W: Right. Everything has two sides. Let’s go to enjoy paintings in other rooms.
M: All right. But just like other artists, modern artists also try to get across their personal feelings about the world
through paintings.
W: Yes. I should enjoy their artworks more often, so I can understand them better.
Text 10
M: It seems like there’s never an end to schoolwork. However, myHomework is a student planner that can help you
manage your school life. I’m Rigo, the creator of myHomework. When I was in college, my biggest problem was
staying organized. I went to the app store searching for a student planner app. But the ones available were not that useful
and you had to pay for them. So, I created myHomework in 2009 before graduation and then joined a big company to go
on developing it. The app allows you to search for classes, tests and homework. It’s free, but if you pay a small extra
charge, you can visit the myHomework website and receive homework reminders. A built-in rewards system encourages
kids to complete their work, and then adds new homework through a service called Kiip. Till now, myHomework has
grown into one of the most popular education apps in schools.
