(2024·江苏省盐城市高二期末)There lived two brothers, John McNeil and James, in a village in Kentucky in the north of America, who had lost their parents in a terrible earthquake ten years before. Worse still, ten-year-old John McNeil suffered from serious autism (自闭症). He often stayed at a corner without saying anything with others and frequently ran everywhere, so his brother James was concerned about his safety. EXERCISE On a windy, cold day, John McNeil forgot to put on his shoes and ran out the door. He headed straight for the 125-foot electrical tower behind the McNeil home and didn't realize the danger of the structure. That day his thoughts were set on climbing to the top of that tower, touching the sky. Maybe he thought he could meet his parents in the sky. What a poor boy! His seventeen-year-old brother, James, was always close by. James always made sure that no danger came to his little brother. But today was different. Today, John ran out the door unnoticed. He was making his way to the sky step by step by the time James saw him. John, like most autistic children, had no idea about fear or danger. James, on the other hand, realized that he had to face his greatest fear of all—the fear of heights. EXERCISE However, James understood the danger of the electrical tower but chose to follow his younger brother secretly, trying not to look down, all the way to the top. He finally reached his brother and held him with his right hand. With his left hand, he held a metal bar to help stabilize them both. What a thrilling scene! EXERCISE James was shaking. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ Hundreds of people came together at the base of the tower. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ EXERCISE LECTURE when on a windy, cold day what John McNeil _____________________ the 125-foot electrical tower. LECTURE Hundreds of people came together at the base of the tower. A collective gasp escaped the crowd as they witnessed the two brothers making their descent. Strangers joined hands, forming a protective circle around the tower, ready to catch the brothers if they fell. The unity and compassion of the onlookers were obvious. Finally, James and John reached the ground safely, greeted by the applause and cheers of the crowd. James, still trembling from the height he had faced, embraced John tightly. (2024·黑龙江省牡丹江市第一中学高二质量检测)When our youngest sister was born, my little brother Tom was six and I was eight. I had always been the “Big Sister” and he had always been “The Baby”. Our sister's arrival was a complete surprise to both of us. In those days no one worried much about sibling rivalry (兄弟姐妹间的较劲), and no “experts” told us how to deal with another child in the house. We had wise and loving Grandpa and Mom, however. QUIZ 15 I was excited about the baby and loved to hold her and help care for her. Tom's feelings were quite different! He just looked at her and left, preferring to spend the evening in his room. When I went to his room to talk to him and try to get him to play games with me, he just looked away. “Why did they have to get that baby?” Tom asked. Later that night, Grandpa came over to see the new baby. As he held her, he said to Tom, “You know, she's a lot like the baby lamb I'm raising on the bottle. I have to take care of her and feed her often, just the way your mom does with the baby.” Tom said, “I'd rather have the lamb.” QUIZ 16 Grandpa heard and said, “Well, if you'd rather have a lamb, maybe we could trade your little sister for it. I'll give you a day to think it over, and if you still want to trade tomorrow, we'll do it.” I thought I saw him wink at Mom, but I knew I must have been mistaken because Grandpa never winked at anyone. After Grandpa left, Mom read to Tom for a long while. Tom kept looking at the baby, and Mom asked him to hold our little sister while she went to the bathroom. When Mom came back, Tom was gently touching the baby's smooth black hair, and as he held her hand, she took hold of his finger. QUIZ 17 “Mom, look! She's holding my hand!” Tom smiled. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ “She's a day older now. She's holding my hand!” Tom smiled. “Sure, she knows you're her brother,” Mom smiled. He held the baby for more minutes, and seemed much happier at bedtime. The next day, Tom and I spent much of the day watching the baby bathe, watching her sleep and holding her. That evening, when Grandpa came back and asked Tom whether he was ready to trade, Tom looked surprised that Grandpa had remembered the bargain. He began to worry that Grandpa would take our sister away. QUIZ “She's a day older now. I think she's worth five lambs now,” Tom said. Grandpa looked shocked, and said he had to think it over.
