As the late afternoon the sun beat down on his farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to go back home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6 and Everett, 3, had followed along. To have a drink, Louie stepped on a well with a covering which is easily broken.
Brandon had just finished locking the gate when he turned around and saw only his youngest son.
“Where's Louie?” he shouted.
“He fell in the hole!” Everett said.
EXERCISE
Brandon quickly realized what had happened. Noooo! He thought. Louie can not swim! He ran to the well and without thinking, jumped in.
As he fell some 70 feet down the well, Brandon hit the ice-cold water. He grabbed Louie, who was frightened, trying to stay afloat in water that was too deep for either of them to stand.“All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy. Each second in the well meant a greater risk of hypothermia (低温症).
Looking up to see Everett's face above the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you're going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and get someone to help!”
EXERCISE
About 15 minutes later, their neighbors, Christi and Mark Mackenny, were driving by when they noticed Everett alone by the side of the road, waving. They pulled over and asked if he was OK. “My daddy and Louie are in a hole,” he told them.
The couple drove onto the farm, and the boy pointed them to the well. Mark dialed 911 while Christi called another neighbor, Dan Athen.
After hearing from Christi, Dan ran to his barn (谷仓), grabbed a thick 85-foot rope and then with his son Ryan, 13, sped to the Lesebergs' farm. Eric Duncan, who works on Brandon's farm, and his friend Jocob MaKenny also arrived to help.

3.高分范文赏读
They decided to work together to get them out. Dan took out the thick rope and tossed it down the well. “Brandon,” Dan shouted, “send Louie up first.” Brandon tied it around Louie, and then shouted back, “OK, you can pull now!” The neighbors grabbed the rope and began pulling. The moment the small boy emerged they wrapped him with dry clothes and rushed him to their truck, where the heater was still on. Then they turned attention to Brandon and pulled him up as they had done with Louie.
LECTURE
Forty minutes after he'd jumped into the well to save his son, Brandon came out of the well, cold and wet. Just as the neighbors reached out to grab him, he collapsed to the ground, exhausted. A minute later, the rescue team arrived and helped check their bodies. It was a relief that other than some nasty scratches, neither of them suffered hypothermia. When the Lesebergs were refreshed, they praised all neighbors as heroes and expressed their heartfelt thanks. Dan Athen wasn't buying it and said, “If there is a hero, it's three-year-old Everett. He's a real lifesaver.”
写在最后的话:
当生活中遇到困难甚至危险时,沉着应对、勇敢求助,支援的力量会及时到来,共克难关。

QUIZ
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Summertime is lots of fun, but when it's too hot it can instead be very uncomfortable and dangerous.
When the temperature rose to 38℃ in Fort Worth, Texas several years ago it was especially difficult for those who didn't have an air conditioner (空调). 95-year-old World War Ⅰ soldier Julius Hatley was one of those who have to stand the burning heat. His air conditioner had broken and he was completely burning up.
QUIZ

Still, even at 95, he was doing everything he could to get by without help. Julius tried spending time under the trees in his garden—but at one point, he just couldn't take it any more. So he took action. Not knowing what else to do about the extreme heat, 95-year-old Hatley called his local Fort Worth, Texas police department.
William Margolis was the officer on duty that day. He knew this was a common 911 call. For the police, Hatley's request was not an urgent call because there were more important and bigger event waiting for them to do. Still, Margolis and his partner Christopher Weir managed to spare time for a visit.
When they got there around 8:30 am, they found his house was 38℃ to 39℃ already. And the temperature was still rising. After checking the room for a little while, Margolis and Weir quickly discovered that both Hatley's central air conditioning and window unit were broken, leaving the man to suffer alone.

The two men didn't have a solution to Hatley's problem right then, but they promised they would find it out. It didn't take long, however, for Margolis to realize that he just couldn't shake the image of the poor, old man out of his head. He requested that he and Weir make a stop at a shop, where they could buy Hatley a new air conditioner themselves.

But the kindness didn't stop there. What they didn't expect was that more people were to join in the kindness. While shopping, the officers told Hatley's problem to the shop assistants, asking them which models were best suited to his needs. Touched by the men's decision to buy the air conditioner themselves, the shop assistants also joined in, donating $150 towards the cause. Margolis and Weir invited another officer to help them fix the air conditioner in Hatley's house. And now they are working on getting his windows replaced, his house repainted and food provided every week.
