You never forget your first whale. The impact it makes 21 you is huge and life is never quite the same again.
The world seems to be having more and more whale lovers. Since its beginnings in the mid-50s, whale-watching 22 (grow) quickly and now more than 13 million people join 23 (organize) whale watching trips every year.
The trouble is that a few hours of whale watching simply isn’t enough. You go out in the morning and, 24 lunchtime, you are planning your next trip; by teatime, you are planning the one after that. All your holidays center around whales: the only books you read are those about whales, you wear whale T-shirts, and 25 you meet your friends you talk about whales.
So, what is it about these larger-than-life animals 26 makes them so special? Their size is one possible explanation. Imagine 27 (sit) in a small boat next to a blue whale almost as long as a Boeing 737; only a lump of rock could remain 28 (unmove) by an experience like that.
They are great fun to watch, too. Humpback whales, for example, 29 routinely leap into the air and land back in the water with a huge splash. Then there is the striking and deeply moving level of trust 30 many whales show towards people. It’s a truly humbling experience when an enormous whale comes alongside the boat and greets you like an old friend.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Is it better to be an early bird or a night owl?
Rare is the chief executive who values the virtues of a lie-in. Tim Cook, boss of Apple, maker of the iPhone, wakes between 4am and 5am. So does Bob Iger, his counterpart at Disney, a media 31 . According to one survey, two-thirds of the chief executives of large American companies are up by 6 o’clock; for 32 Americans the share is less than one in three. For those aspiring to corporate greatness, the message seems clear: you snooze, you lose.
Your guest Bartleby 33 no such ambitions. But he has, in the past, experimented with early starts, and can confirm that their benefits go beyond the smug sense of satisfaction that comes from arriving at your desk before your editor. Inboxes can be cleared and tricky problems mulled over before the rapid and continuous delivery of emails and meetings begins, leaving you feeling well prepared for the day ahead.
Those quiet hours of the morning need not be spent 34 on work. In a popular genre of TikTok videos, influencers film themselves performing elaborate morning routines in which they submerge themselves in ice baths, recite affirmations and mindfully prepare coffees. In one widely pilloried video, Kris Krohn, a business coach, 35 how he wakes at 4 in the morning to “align the pharmacy of the body and over-dopamine the mind”.
Although Mr Krohn’s routine may lack scientific proof, plenty of research finds 36 in early rising. In a study conducted in 2012 by Renée Biss and Lynn Hasher, then both at the University of Toronto, early birds reported feeling happier and healthier. Night owls, their nocturnal opposites, tend to have less sleep, which can 37 on their mood and health — as well as their productivity. Andrew Conlin of the University of Oulu, in Finland, and co-authors found that men who rose late made 4% less money than those who were up early.
Early birds are certainly held in higher regard. Rolling into the office late continues to be 38 upon in most workplaces. A study published in 2022 by Jessica Dietch of Oregon State University and her co-authors found that night owls were perceived by respondents as being “lazy”, “ 39 ” and “immature”. To pile on the stereotypes, they are fatter, too, according to research by Lap Ah Tse of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and colleagues.
Rising early is not, though, all upside. Those ready and waiting to receive work when the boss arrives may be given more of it. If the early bird gets the worm, the clever worm stays in bed. Urgent tasks often come up during the day, meaning that those who come in early may end up working just as late as their dawn-averse colleagues. The more emails you send in the morning, the more responses you are 40 to get back.

Professor Heinz Wolff, who has died aged 89, was a bioengineering pioneer. He established the discipline, named it and, in a 60-year career, made significant contributions to medical research. But to the British public, he was best known as the dotty scientist who fronted The Great Egg Race, a BBC show in which colour-coded teams were set engineering challenges (the first was to transport an egg in a vehicle powered by rubber bands). With his trademark bow tie, half-moon glasses and Mittel-European accent, he looked really like Professor Branestawn, as described by W. Heath Robinson. Yet while he cheerfully exploited his reputation as a “peculiar egghead”, he was very serious about his work and inspired thousands of young people to consider scientific careers.
Born in Berlin in 1928, Heinz Wolff was the son of Jewish parents. His mother died in 1938, and the next year the family fled. They arrived in Britain on the day war was declared. “We really cut it rather fine,” he said on Desert Island Discs in 1998. After leaving school, he worked as a technician at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where he invented a machine to count red blood cells, and then at the National Institute for Medical Research’s pneumoconiosis research unit in Cardiff, where he designed a means of measuring dust levels in coal miners. He went on to study at University College London and graduated with a first in physics and physiology. Then, in 1983, he founded the Institute for Bioengineering at Brunel University. His particular interest was in technologies to improve the lives of older people, but he was also heavily involved in space research and worked as an adviser to the European Space Agency.
Wolff had made his first appearance on TV on Panorama in 1966, encouraging Richard Dimbleby to swallow a “radio pill”. On The Great Egg Race, which ran from 1979, his task was to get opponent teams representing organizations such as the chemical company ICI. Challenges included building a hovercraft from a lawnmower, and inventing a bicycle that could ride on water. Marks were awarded for entertainment value and technical accomplishment. The show ended in the mid-1980s, but Wolff continued to judge scientific competitions, on TV and elsewhere. A natural entertainer with an inexhaustible curiosity about the world, he said he’d be happy to dress up as a clown if it got children interested in science.
56.The word “dotty” (paragraph1) is closest in meaning to ________.
A.strange B.serious C.famous D.genius
57.Which of the following statements is TRUE of Heinz Wolff according to the passage?
A.His family left Berlin after World War II began.
B.He used to major in physics and physiology.
C.He invented a machine while in University College London.
D.His interest lay in helping those living in war-stricken areas.
58.Heinz Wolff didn’t mind looking ridiculous as long as ________.
A.he could keep being curious about the world
B.he could combine entertainment and technology
C.he could help arouse children’s interest in science
D.he could appear on TV to judge scientific competitions
59.Which of the following is an achievement made by Heinz Wolff?
A.Representing a chemical company.
B.Designing a method to count red blood cells.
C.Being the first scientist to front TV shows.
D.Setting up the subject of bioengineering.

Is Paperless Office Really Paperless?
A rising economy increased paper sales by 6 to 7 percent each year in the early to mid-1990s, and the convenience of desktop printing allowed office workers to indulge anything and everything. In 2004, Ms. Dunn, a communications supplies director, said that plain white office paper would see less than a 4 percent growth rate, a primary reason for which is that some 47 percent of the workforce entered the job market after computers had already been introduced to offices.
For office innovators, the dream of paperless office is an example of high-tech arrogance(傲慢). Today’s office service is overwhelmed By more newspapers than ever before. After decades of development, the American government can finally get rid of the madness on paper. In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.
“Old habits are hard to break,” says Ms. Dunn. “There are some functions that paper serves where a screen display doesn’t work. Those functions are both its strength and its weakness.” Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.
“We’re finally seeing a reduction in the amount of paper being used per worker in the workplace,” says John Maine, vice president of a paper economic consulting firm. “More information is being transmitted electronically, and an increasing number of people are satisfied that information exists only in electronic form without printing multiple backups.”
To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities. For example, Xerox is developing electronic paper: thin digital displays that respond to a stylus, like a pen on paper. Marks can be erased or saved digitally. Even with such technological advances, the increasing amounts of electronic data necessarily require more paper.
“The information industry today is composed of a thin paper crust surrounding an electronic core,” Mr. Saffo wrote. The growing paper crust is most noticeable, but the hidden electronic core is far larger and growing more rapidly. The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.”
63.Which of the following statements is NOT a reason for the slowdown in American paper sales?
A.Workforce with better computer skills.
B.Slow growth of the U.S. economy.
C.Changing patterns in paper use.
D.Changing employment trends.
64.What does the last sentence in Para 3 mean?
A.We have to look at paper consumption from different angles.
B.There is little chance that paper consumption will fall in the digital age.
C.Paper consumption will be greatly reduced in the digital age.
D.People are no longer so addicted to paper in the digital age.
65.The innovations from Xerox and other companies feature ___.
A.the intergration of digital technology with traditional paper
B.the chance from traditional paper to digital technology
C.the combination of the use of computer screens and cell phones
D.a new type of computer writing and communication
66.What can we draw from the example of the aviation industry in the last paragraph?
A.The dream of the paperless office will be realized some day.
B.People usually prefer to have face-to-face meetings instead of using computers.
C.More digital data use leads to greater paper use in the digital time.
D.Some people are no longer opposed to video-conferencing.

Why should mankind explore space? Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? 67 . The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be located. Additional resources are always beneficial when used wisely, and can increase our chances of survival. Knowledge or techniques acquired through exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from the developers into society at large. 68 . Also, we have already benefited from other by-products, including improvements in earthquake prediction — which has saved many lives — in satellites used for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick saucepans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry!
69 . The chances of a large comet hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species. Human technology is reaching the point where it might be able to detect the possibility of this happening, and enable us to minimize the damage, or prevent it completely, allowing us as a species to avoid extinction.
In certain circumstances, life on Earth may become impossible: over-population or wide spread diseases, for instance, might eventually force us to find other places to live. While the earth is the only planet known to sustain life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to inhabit other planets and moons. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. 70 .
A.The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives.
B.Space allows us to expand and succeed: for the sake of everyone on the earth, now and in the future, space exploration is essential.
C.The mysterious space objects varying in size have been fascinated scientists and scholars for years.
D.It appears that we are driven to ensure the success and continuation of not just our own genes, but of the species as a whole.
E.Therefore it still poses a problem for us human beings whether to explore the space at the cost of our own homelands.
F.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.

These days our society develops rapidly and forces people to rush. It appears that people have got used to being in a hurry. However, it’s better for people to take their time and live their life at a slower pace than to hurry to get things done.
The main reason that convinces us to be against doing work in a hurry is the possibility of doing wrong in a rush. When people do their jobs or take action in a hurry, they can’t make a sound decision and probably regret later. As the saying goes, “Haste makes waste.” We should think carefully before making a decision and do our work less quickly. We should not make mistakes by doing work hurriedly.
Slowing down the pace of life helps people enjoy their life better. For example, taking a train to some place certainly will take more time than taking a plane. However, taking a train makes people have enough time to get to know a lot of new friends. Besides, it allows people to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. On the contrary, being in a hurry will make us lose chances of enjoying our lives.
Finally, slower life pace provides better health conditions for us. As is known to all, taking action in a hurry bothers people and raises their stress. People think if they are not in a hurry, they will become a loser and that annoys them. But being in a hurry can hurt people both physically and mentally (精神上). According to some studies, people who have a slower pace suffer fewer diseases, tend to be happier and live much longer than those whose life is tense, even if the former finish jobs more slowly than the latter.
In short, working quickly will bring about more material benefits to make our society more advanced. Yet, much stress can’t bring enjoyment, friends and health, which are much more important than money and other material advantages. Therefore, take your time and live your life at a slower pace.

【原文】 On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will pay back invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I’m sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you’re willing to work hard.
Questions:

【原文】
Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot … you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more! Walking is a basic, simple exercise that’s suitable for almost everyone.
Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.
Questions:
14.What’s the topic of the passage?
15.Why is walking good for people’s mental health?
16. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about walking in the passage?

【原文】W: Hi, Bryan. How are you doing? You look tired.
M: Oh, I’m a little burned out. I’ve been surfing the Net for the last few hours.
W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure.
M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting.
W: Well, did you get the information you needed?
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have lot of more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.
W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.
M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relative information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars.
W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M:I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read though what I got on the Internet and start working on my subjects.
W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.
M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.
Questions:
17. Why does the man look tired?

【答案】

【答案】63.B 64.B 65.A 66.C
【分析】本文是一篇社会类短文阅读。随着信息化的发展,越来越多的公司实行无纸化办公,但是,无纸化办公真的无纸吗?
63.细节理解题。根据文章第二段In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.可知,尽管美国经济状况良好,纸张的销售却显著放缓。故选B。
64.句意理解题。根据文章第三段Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.
To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities.可知,为了减少纸张的使用,施乐公司与其他公司正在努力将数字和纸张功能结合起来。故选A。
66.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.可知,信息时代最大的讽刺是我们正在变得无纸化,从而可以推断出在数字时代,更多的数字数据的使用导致更多纸张的使用。故选C。

【答案】67.D 68.A 69.F 70.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述人类探索太空的原因和必要性。
67.根据上文“What prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? (是什么促使我们遥远的祖先从树上迁移到平原,并继续迁移到所有可能的地区和环境?)”和下文“The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival. (一个物种的分布越广,它的生存机会就越大。)”可知设空处应是回答上文,即物种会迁移的原因,所以D选项“似乎我们被驱使着不仅要确保我们自己基因的成功和延续,还要确保整个物种的成功和延续。”起到承上启下的作用,符合题意,故选D。
68.根据上文“Knowledge or techniques acquired through exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from the developers into society at large. (通过探索或准备探索而获得的知识或技术将从开发者那里渗透到整个社会中。)”可推断下文应是进一步说明这些知识或技术在社会中的作用,所以A项“这些技术可能在医学上有应用,可以延长我们的寿命或提高我们的生活质量。”符合题意,故选A。
69.根据下文“The chances of a large comet hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species. (大彗星撞击地球的几率很小,但迟早会发生。过去的这种撞击可能是恐龙和其他物种灭绝的原因。)”可推断上文应是说明宇宙的运行应该存在危险,故F选项“虽然太空中可能有许多关于宇宙如何形成或如何运作的奇迹和解释,但它也存在危险。”切题,故选F。
70.根据上文“While the earth is the only planet known to sustain life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to inhabit other planets and moons. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. (虽然地球是已知的唯一能维持生命的行星,但人类的适应能力肯定能让我们在其他行星和卫星上居住。生活方式确实会有所不同,但人类的生活和文化在过去已经适应了,在未来肯定会适应。)”可知说的是探索探空的趋势和必要性,对探空探索进行总结,故B选项“太空使我们得以扩张和成功:为了地球上的每个人,现在和将来,太空探索是必不可少的。”符合语境,故选B。

【答案】I’ve learned that a photography exhibition is to be held and that you’re collecting advice on the way of arrangement. I’m writing this letter to share my opinions with you. In my opinion, it is more advisable to hold the photography exhibition in school library than on campus website. My reasons are as follows.
At first, the library of our school is spacious, which provides visitors with a comfortable environment for appreciating the exhibition, so they will have a nice experience. Besides, watching the exhibition at school library is more convenient for visitors to interact with others. Last but not least, a photography exhibition held on campus website has far less impact than that held in school library, because people may assume that holding a photography exhibition on website is just like a virtual activity. Therefore, I suggest the exhibition be held in school library.
