First let me introduce myself. My name is John Barker, and I work at an institution. As most of you know, I'm here to talk about students' summer jobs. In many parts of the world, university students work in the summer. They need the money, and they can get some working experience. Traditionally, they get jobs as servers, cashiers, and lifeguards at swimming pools. These days, however, more and more students are working at dotcoms. Dotcoms are Internetbased companies which offer goods and services online. Today's young people already know a lot about computers, and they can quickly learn more. The pay is usually much better than at the traditional summer jobs. There are other advantages besides the pay. Students see dotcom jobs as a good start on their future. In addition to providing good experience, the work is also enjoyable for most. On top of this, their coworkers treat them with respect. Dotcoms are new and need new ways of thinking. Imagination is more important than formal qualifications. So some students are even quitting school to start their own dotcoms. 18.Who are the listeners? A.Servers. B.Cashiers. C.Students. 答案:C 19.What is dotcom? A.A computer shop. B.A department store. C.An Internetbased company. 答案:C 20.Which is mentioned by the speaker? A.Where to apply for a dotcom job. There's something for all levels of skills and ambitions. The Kenai River Trail A half mile down this trail are wonderful views of the Kenai River Canyon. There are really two trailheads (小道的起点); the main “upper” trail starts at mile 0.6 of Skilak Lake Rd, and the other at mile 2.3. Turnagain Arm Trail This 11mile hike begins at Potter Trailhead (Mile 115). Initially used by Alaska Natives, the trail, can also be accessible to points along the way: McHugh Creek (Mile 112), Rainbow (Mile 108) and Windy (Mile 107). Iditarod National Historic Trail The National Historic Iditarod Trail is a 24mile hike used by gold miners and sleddog teams until 1918, when the Alaska Railroad was finished. It's a twotothree day hike through superb mountain scenery to Girdwood (where it's known as the Crow Pass Trail), and is the region's best backpack adventure. Put up a tent at Echo Bend (Mile 3), or rent one of two yurts (毡房) ($65 per night) close by. For a shorter outing you can turn around at the Perch, then return to the Dew Mound Trail at Echo Bend and then to the Nature Center, making this a scenic 8mile trip. Reed Lakes Trail Two alpine lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and towering granite (花岗岩) walls: the 7to9mile Reed Lakes Trail is one of the most wonderful hikes in the region, and worth the climb. Once you reach upper Reed Lake, continue 1 mile to Bomber Glacier, where the ruin of a B29 bomber lies in memorial to six men who died in a 1957 crash. 21.Which of the following was originally used by Alaska Natives? I opened my back door only to find six inches of wet, heavy snow piled up against it. I knew I had quite a job of shoveling out ahead of me, so I grabbed my snow shovel. It looked a lot more ready to work than I did. I sighed and pulled on my boots, gloves and heavy coat. The cold wind was below zero and cut into my face as I slowly shoveled off my car roof. After that, I started my way to my daughter's house, shoveling the path as I walked. It took a while to get her driveway clear and I knew I still had a lot to do. Next came the paths down the hill to my own car covered in snow. I grabbed the broom to sweep them off as well. I felt uncomfortable when the wind blew the swept snow back. Then I started to shovel out my driveways. My back was aching as I worked. I wished I could be building a snowman instead of shoveling. Winter sure had seemed a lot more fun when I was a boy. When I finished, I examined my work. It didn't look half bad. I smiled and looked at the woods covered in white. They were such a special sight. I leaned on my shovel and took it all in. Then I thanked God for the beauty of the day and started up the hill with the snow shovel in one hand and the broom in the other. Suddenly, an urge came over me and I dropped them both. I spread my arms, fell back into the blanket of white and happily moved my arms and legs to make an angel in the snow. As you go through the seasons of this life, take joy in your work, take joy in your play, take joy in your life. Remember that the course of your days rests in your own hands. And always know in your heart that God loves you through the snowstorms as well as in the sunshine. 24.According to the first paragraph, why did the author sigh? At the ongoing World Class Theater for Chinese Audiences meeting on Thursday, the dialogue Theatre and Youth: Theater Practice for Youth dealt with this issue. Wang Keran, a producer from a Chinese cultural company, stressed that the theater industry needs to carry out comprehensive (综合性的) education concerning the theater for the young, while Zhou Xing from China's Ministry of Education said that theater education has a broader definition, which includes human thoughts, emotions and expression. Overseas theater directors and actors including Jean Varela, Florence Mach and Oriol Broggi, also share their experiences and thoughts on this topic. In the eyes of Varela, theater education is one of the most important means to raise people's ability to appreciate the artform. “I was forced by my mum to attend these performance classes in the hope of helping me get rid of my shyness over my obesity (肥胖) when I was a kid. It turned out she was right,” he said. March, who focuses on arts education and research, said that his project Spring of School aims to help youngsters aged 14-16 with the goal of “helping them become better people”. These guests also gave different advice to encourage more and more young people to walk into the theaters. Anais Martane came up with the idea of lowpriced student tickets on days like Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which she said will help kids turn the performing arts into a hobby. “In France, the price for kids can be very low, so that parents can take them to many plays. This is also an important part of theater education,” she said. 28.What is the experts' common opinion about theater education? But psychologists say that gallows humor can be an important way to relieve stress. “Humor makes you feel in control and it can give you that feeling that everything is okay even when it's not,” says James M. Jones, a psychology professor at the University of Delaware. Psychologists say that just because you're laughing doesn't mean you're wasting time. Occasional teasing among colleagues, particularly if it revolves around things associated with the job, can boost creativity, departmental cohesiveness (凝聚力) and performance. “There are a lot of stressors out there,” says Ed Dunkelblau, a psychologist with the Institute for Emotionally Intelligent Learning in Chicago. “But gallows humor is a way of making difficult things a little less difficult.” This is true as long as the humor is used for the right purpose. The main point of it should be inspiring people—not laughing at them. “Anything that would lift morale (士气) in terms of the company would be good humor,” says Thierry Guedj, a professor of business and psychology at Boston University. “Before you say or do anything, think about, ‘How is this helping my employees' morale?’” You want to give your employees and coworkers a sense of belonging, so don't make observations that are aggressive. Most obviously, Dr Guedj says, don't make comments about people's physical appearance, or faith. If you have any doubt, it's appropriate, don't go through with it. Or you can take aim at the one person you know won't be offended (冒犯): Yourself. “If there's going to be a joke or story, it should be you,” Mr Dunkelblau says. For example, if you're a marketing manager reviewing a failed campaign that you led, begin with a line like, “The guy who gave permission to this deal might just be looking for work next week.” “People with the ability to laugh at themselves can give other people permission to laugh at themselves too,” Mr Jones says. “And if you can laugh at yourself, you feel better about yourself.” 32.According to the text, gallows humor has the following functions EXCEPT ________. A.reducing pressure B.improving performance C.making people more creative D.leading to a big mistake 答案:D 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But psychologists say that gallows humor can be an important way to relieve stress.” D。 33.What is Ed Dunkelblau's attitude towards gallows humor? A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Neutral. D.Uncertain. 根据第三段中的“But gallows humor is a way of making difficult things a little less difficult.” A。 34.Which of the following would Dr Guedj most probably agree with? A.Gallows humor is the basic source of morale. B.Gallows humor allows people to laugh at others. C.Gallows humor may sometimes be used for the wrong purpose. D.Anything that may lift morale can be called gallows humor. 根据第四段中的“This is true as long as ... says Thierry Guedj”可知,他认为只要幽默被用于正当方面的时候,就会有很好的作用。 C。 35.When people use gallows humor, they should ________. A.observe who is aggressive B.show a sense of belonging C.doubt about the result of humor D.try to avoid irritating others 答案:D 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“so don't make observations ... about people's physical appearance, or faith”可知,当我们在展示幽默的时候,不要嘲笑别人的缺点。 Is it true that British people have a different sense of humor than people in other countries? Let's have a look at what we laugh at in Britain. __36__ It's not just politicians who make us laugh, but anyone whose job is to tell other people what to do and who takes themselves too seriously. We laugh at authority, but also sympathetically laugh with anyone who we think is treated badly. __37__ Our clowns are often silly people doing silly things—Mr Bean, for example—while in America, they are often clever people doing clever things and winning. The fact that we laugh when other people might feel hopeless is one of the oddest things to appreciate about British humor. We do have a strong sense of irony (反讽). “Not very pleasant,” we might say after some terrible experience. __38__ “It's a bit windy today,” we might say in the middle of a typhoon, or “There's a slight problem,” when something has gone very seriously wrong. __39__ Another thing that can make it difficult to understand British humor is that we don't always laugh or even smile when we say something funny. __40__ Do you think the British sense of humor is unique? A.In addition, we tend to play things down. B.We often keep a straight face even when we're making a joke. C.Culture plays a big part in how funny you may find something. D.We know they can't win, but if they do so sometimes, it's even funnier. E.Brits don't express extreme feelings; we just “keep calm and carry on”. F.Brits turn to laughter as a form of medicine when life knocks them down. G.To the British, powerful and important people are often sources of laughter. 36.G 根据下文“It's not just politicians who make us laugh, but anyone whose job is to tell other people what to do and who takes themselves too seriously.(让我们发笑的不仅有政客,还有那些以告诉别人该做什么为职责的人以及那些把自己看得太重要的人。)” 切题,选项中的powerful and important people对应下文中的politicians,故选G。 37.D 根据上文“We laugh at authority, but also sympathetically laugh with anyone who we think is treated badly.(我们会嘲笑权威,但也会同情地笑那些我们认为受到虐待的人。)” 切题,选项中的they指代上文中的anyone who we think is treated badly,故选D。 38.A 根据上文“We do have a strong sense of irony (反讽). ‘Not very pleasant,’ we might say after some terrible experience.(我们确实有强烈的反讽意识。当一些糟糕的经历发生后,我们可能会说‘不是很愉快’。)”可知,此处应指出英国人在淡化一些严重的事情。A项(此外,我们倾向于淡化一些事情。)切题。故选A。 39.E 根据上文“‘It's a bit windy today,’ we might say in the middle of a typhoon, or ‘There's a slight problem,’ when something has gone very seriously wrong.(‘今天有点风’,我们可能会在台风中说,或者当一些事情变得非常严重的时候,说‘有个小问题’。)” 40.B 根据上文“Another thing that can make it difficult to understand British humor is that we don't always laugh or even smile when we say something funny.(另一件让我们很难理解英式幽默的事情是,当我们说一些有趣的事情时,我们并不总是笑,甚至不笑。)” 切题,选项中straight face对应上文中的don't always laugh or even smile,故选B。 Last month, when Alex posted a video of him working on the painting of a fox on social media, his fans were amazed to find him holding a brush in his __41__ because he has lost the use of his hands. After finishing my homework, I was so tired that I fell asleep immediately. Suddenly, I saw a UFO land in the yard. Out came an alien, who looked tall and strong with two heads and three eyes. When I saw the alien walking towards me, I was too astonished to move. The alien seemed to be saying something to greet me but I couldn't understand it. Just at that time, a loud noise woke me up. It was my alarm clock. Do you think my dream is interesting? Write to me about your dream. My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings, and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four. In the early 70's my mother attended college during the day and I was in day care. One day at day care I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald's for dinner?” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald's.” No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding her mother tried stopped Susie's tantrum (发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let's go to McDonald's.” Susie stopped yelling. With a smile on her face she grabbed her mother's hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate (不准确的); I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum. That day my mother picked me up early from day care because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone?” She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can't have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.” By now we were standing in the long holiday line to pay the bill, and I figured it was a good chance. “Mama, stop. Mama, get up,” I tearfully pleaded. [精彩范文] By now we were standing in the long holiday line to pay the bill, and I figured it was a good chance. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, “I want that telephone,” over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, “Becky, you had better get up by the count of three or else ... One ... Two ... Three.” Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, “I want a new car. I want a new house. I want some jewelry. I want ...” Shocked, I stood up. “Mama, stop. Mama, get up,” I tearfully pleaded. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the store, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, “Your mom got you good. I bet you'll never try that again.” And I didn't, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective than any physical mark.
