I think it's a little frightening! It doesn't look friendly and its I think it's a lovely picture. The koalas are cute. 2.Discuss. ·If you have a chance to save one of them, which one would you like to choose? Why? 1. Ask students to read the two posters and think about the question. ·What information do the posters involve? 2. Ask students to read the two posters again and complete the table. poster on the left poster on the right situation reason hope Suggested answer: poster on the left poster on the right situation “Ugly” animals are not treated equally as cute ones. A lot of animal homes are being destroyed. reason They are regarded as less cute. Billions of trees are being cut down every year. hope Consider "ugly" animals as important as cute ones. Be aware of the paper consumption. 1. Write a one-sentence summary.(Activity 2) Ask students what each poster mainly talks about. Let them write a one-sentence summary for each poster. Suggested answer: Poster on the left: "Ugly" animnals are just as important as cute animals because nature needs variety to function properly. Poster on the right: Cutting down trees to make paper destroys the natural habitat of many animals. 2. Look and discuss. Ask students to look at the posters again and discuss the questions in groups.(Activity 3) ·What does each poster use to stir up emotions? ·Who do you think is the intended audience for each poster? Why do you think so? ·What does each poster want people to do? How do you know? ·In your opinion, which poster is more effective? Why? Suggested answers: ·The first poster uses an ugly picture of an animal to get a reaction from the reader, but then makes the point that this reaction is part of the problem, because all animals should be protected, not just ones we think are cute. The ugly rodent is also framed by a Mickey Mouse outline, showing the difference between how we see them in cartoons and how they really are. The second has a cute picture and the headline is written as if the koalas were speaking to the reader which may make them more sympathetic. ·The posters are intended for everyone because they appeal to protecting our planet which we all live on, and to our paper consumption which we all rely on. ·The first poster wants us to consider “ugly” animals as just as important as cute ones, because it asks us directly to do that. The second wants us to be aware of our paper consumption. It doesn't tell us to change directly, but it appeals to our emotions to change because what we are doing is not fair to animals like koalas. ·I think the “Give Ugly a Chance!" poster is more effective, because the viewer will react to the ugly animal first, but then read that this reaction is part of the problem that needs to be dealt with. Ask students to think about the following questions. ·Can you explain the structure of an effective poster? ·What are the features of an effective poster? After analysing the features of the two posters, ask students if they are clear about how )make an effective poster. Tell students to find out some expressions about the wildlife rotection in A Day in the Clouds. Suggested answer: They were hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur. The population dropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their habitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet,we must change our way of life. Only when we learn to exist in harmony wvith nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet. Ask students to make a poster about an endangered animal. (Activity 4) (1)Choose one of the animals in the textbook or one of your own. Do some research to add to the animal fact sheet. (2)Follow these steps to organise your poster. Ask students to exchange drafts and comment on others' drafts according to the checklist. ✓ Does the poster include key information about the animal? ✓ Does the poster explain why it is endangered? Does the poster support its information with facts? ✓ Is the message of the poster clear, i.e. can you tell clearly what the designer wants the reader to think or do? ✓Is the image on the poster effective? Suggested answer: Protect These Gentle Giants The Eastern Lowland gorilla is critically endangered. They are threatened by human activity. They are hunted for their meat. Their natural habitat is being destroyed by farming, mining, and logging. There are less than 4,000 left in the wild. You can help by spreading the word about their difficult situation and supporting charities that work to protect them.
