Most people love animals. Many children’s books use animals as the main characters. Many people look after animals as pets. The love for animals may be why both children and adults (成年人) enjoy going to zoos.
In the past, zoos were usually started by rich people. The first zoo was started by a queen in Egypt in 1500 BC. Raising animals was a way for people to show they were wealthy and powerful. Sadly, the animals in the early zoos were not treated well. They didn’t receive enough attention or care.
Today, zoos still bring people pleasure, but they try to protect animals and teach people as well. Zoos must follow rules. People must provide animals with a clean place to live, food and water, and health care. In this way, the rules help protect the animals.
Some people think the rules are not enough. They want to do more to protect the animals they love. For example, people disapproved of the use of some large animals in shows. They thought the zoos didn’t have enough space for the animals to show. They also thought the animals were not treated properly. With so many people against the shows, the zoos decided to make a change.

Why do We Yawn?
Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
41.What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean?

History can be a difficult subject for many students. It’s important to remember. However, history is just a collection of stories in fact. Learning history can help us better understand the present and make us wiser. If you have trouble in matching the story and its time, maybe you can memorize them by making a timeline (时间轴). Here are some suggestions to help you make a timeline.
Firstly, make a list of important dates. Find key dates from your textbooks and class notes. Combine (整合) this information as a list to make sure your dates are in time order.
Secondly, organize your timeline. Draw a straight line from one end of your page to the other. Then, begin filling in your dates in order from the oldest to the latest. Draw a box under each date and begin filling it in with the key information you need to remember. Make sure it includes information about important people, events and places.
Thirdly, move forward in time. Continue filling in your dates in your timeline along with descriptions (描述) of what happened and why it is important. Make notes of connections among events by drawing arrows (箭头). Use different colors to make the timeline visually (视觉上地) friendly. This can also help you quickly find important names or other key information that appear in your timeline more than once.
Fourthly, test yourself. Once you have finished your timeline, put it away and try to recreate it from your memory. This will tell you what you really know. If you don’t get everything right for the first time, go back to brush up on the parts that you missed.
Once you recreate everything from the beginning, you will know that you have your history information memorized.

In many countries, people discovered children with a talent (天赋) for sports early and they encouraged them to become good players by training for hours every day. While some people see this as a good way to improve children’s health, others think that too much training can be harmful.
People who are against (反对) training children for so long say that there are many bad sides. Here are some:
It takes the child such long hours that it can make the child not close to his or her family.
Players who spend too much time training pay less attention to education.
Parents may also care more about the sports results than the child.
Dr. Christine Carr, a psychologist (心理学家), suggests that parents take some important steps to let their kids make good use of sports. Carr says that children should learn life lessons from sports. Learning to deal with failure (失败) is an important life skill that kids should learn from sports.
Other psychologists point to the importance of letting children make their own decisions. Top player Michael Phelps said that he thanked his parents for letting him decide how much he trained. By allowing Phelps to decide what to do, his mother also saw him improve as a student.
Another thing is the importance of developing a close relationship (关系) with the family. Dr. Carr suggests eating dinner together.

Zhong Kaitong, a fourth-grader from Guangzhou, enjoyed a fun vacation this summer. Instead of attending English or math training courses, she played badminton and basketball most of the time.
A new guideline(指导方针)introduced by central authorities(中央政府)on July 24 helped Zhong enjoy some free time during the summer. Aiming to ease(减少)the schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school students, the guideline calls for reducing homework, improving the quality of education and regulating(规范)after-class activities, Xinhua reported.
According to the guideline, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline (汽油), but that may change in the future: cars can also run on other liquid fuels (液体燃料) and electricity.
Gasoline is from oil. The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物). Gasoline provides great power for cars. However, it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise. So gasoline can’t be the best fuel.
Another choice is electricity. Electricity cars can be as efficient as cars using gasoline, and they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive. Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.
The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.
One way to make such fuels is to get CO2 from the air and put it in water. Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.
Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use. But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.
For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it. Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline. Governments and car producers are doing everything they can to cut down the costs. In the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.
41.Gasoline provides cars with ________.

For years, humans have fought with the dandelions. Most people consider dandelions as terrible grass for they can get in the way of the crops’ growth: They pull them by the roots or kill the plants against chemicals. But our war with the dandelions may be over soon.
Stem It’s no secret that the dandelion has its uses. Young dandelion leaves make a delicious salad. Dandelion plants have many long, thin roots, which allow water and air to mix in and keep soil healthy. Dandelion flowers also attract ladybugs. Ladybugs are good for gardens because they can eat small bad insects. However, most people still think of the dandelion as a wild plant. Their thoughts need to be changed. If you pick a dandelion, you probably notice the milky juice that comes from the stems.
Dandelion juice is a natural source of rubber (橡胶). Around 30,000 different products are made from rubber today. Most of these products are made from rubber that comes from the rubber tree. But there are problems with these products. Some people have a serious allergy (过敏) to this kind of rubber. And a fungus (真菌) is killing out many of the rubber trees on our planet.
Scientists are looking for dandelion juice to become a good source of rubber in the future. Dandelions are easy to plant and grow quickly. People who are allergic to rubber products made from rubber trees are not likely to be allergic to dandelion rubber. When we make peace with the dandelion, we’ll be planting it, instead of pulling it.

Everyone needs deep sleep, because our body fixes itself when we are in deep sleep. However, deep sleep doesn’t happen right after we get into bed and close our eyes. It takes time and happens only a few times during sleep. From the picture, we can know the time when deep sleep usually happens.
In the picture, REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement (快速动眼睡眠期), and NREM stands for Non-Rapid Eye Movement (非快速动眼睡眠期). During REM sleep, our eyes move quickly from side to side, and that doesn’t happen during NREM sleep.
NREM sleep comes after REM sleep, and it has three stages. In the first stage, others can easily wake us up because we are in light sleep. In the second stage, our heart rate (比率) is slow, and our body is cool to get ready for deep sleep. The third stage is deep sleep. It’s more difficult for others to wake us up in this stage because our body is busy fixing itself. But it doesn’t last long.
We go back to the stage of REM sleep about 90 minutes after we start to sleep. This stage is part of light sleep, too. And dreams usually happen here. Then NREM sleep comes back. Although we can go back to NREM sleep again, we don’t always get into the third stage. This is why a long sleep doesn’t always make us feel good. The key lies in how much deep sleep we get. And how can we have as much deep sleep as we want? Doctors haven’t got the answer yet.
36.Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A.deep sleep B.light sleep C.NREM sleep D.REM sleep
37.According to the passage and the picture, dreams usually happen during Period ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
38.What can we learn from the picture?
A.REM sleep only happens once.
B.After the three stages of NREM sleep, people wake up.
C.People first go into NREM sleep, and then REM sleep.
D.People won’t get into the third stage of NREM sleep after three hours of sleep.
39.From the passage, we can infer (推断)that ________.
A.our eyes move quickly during NREM sleep
B.deep sleep lasts for a long time
C.deep sleep is good for our bodies
D.doctors know how to get more deep sleep
40.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
Many people have always believed that animals hunting for food always catch the ones that are young, old or sick. Till now there is no proof (证据) of this fact. But latest research by French scientists in Paris, France, has proved that it is true. A report on their research came out in The Economist magazine recently. How did they do it?
The scientists studied the hunting habits of cats. And they studied the health of birds that were killed by cats and those killed in accidents. They made a careful study of one part of the birds’ bodies which was a sign of its good health. That part was the spleen (脾).
The scientists chose the spleen because of a particular (特定的) reason. Healthy birds have larger sized spleens than those which keep getting ill. So from the size of the spleen the French scientists could find out if the birds killed by cats were healthy or sick.
They examined more than 500 birds from 18 different species (种类) and made very interesting discoveries. The spleens of birds killed by cats were much smaller than those killed in accidents. It means that they were not very healthy. This was true of 16 out of the 18 species they studied. In a word, the spleens of birds killed in accidents were three times larger than the spleens of birds killed by cats.
Also most of the birds killed by the cats were young. Of those that died in accidents, half were young and half were adult. So while it is true that the young and the sick birds are at a greater danger of becoming a cat’s lunch or dinner, old birds are able to take care of themselves.
41.What has the latest research by French scientists proved?
A.Many animals catch others for food.
B.We should stop hunting to protect animals.
C.When animals hunt, they catch the weak ones.
D.People are only allowed to hunt the young, old or sick animals.
42.Why did the scientist choose the spleen to do the research?
A.Because it’s very useful for cats to catch birds.
B.Because it’s important to see if the birds are healthy or sick.
C.Because from its size, we can find out if the birds can fly.
D.Because it’s the most important part of a bird’s body.
43.Which of the following is TRUE about the research?
A.All the 18 species they studied had the same result.
B.They caught the healthy birds to examine their spleens.
C.The spleens of birds killed in accidents were much smaller.
D.Scientists studied over 500 birds from 18 different species.
44.What kind of birds will be more likely to be caught by the cats?
A.The adult. B.The old. C.The healthy. D.The young.
45.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.The result of a new research about hunting. B.A way to protect the birds.
C.The important part of birds’ body. D.A particular idea about hunting.

“Your hair looks nice today.”
This is an example of a compliment. It feels nice when someone notices and praises you for something. But are there cultural differences in making compliments?
Sometimes I receive compliments for things that I don’t think it is worth. For example, when a taxi driver says “Wow, your Chinese is so good!” even though the only thing I said to him was “Hello, please take me to the airport.” It feels insincere (不真诚的) to receive a compliment like this for saying just one simple sentence. However, I know he’s just trying to be polite.
It also seems like Chinese people are a bit more humble (谦虚的) than others when they receive a compliment. They often think little of the compliments they receive. I enjoy this quality, as people like this are more honest. I’ve noticed that older people are quite humble.
When and where should you give compliments? I try my best to compliment people in the service industry. People sometimes complain about the bad service in restaurants, stores and other places. But if I get good service, I’d love to compliment whoever served me, such as by saying “the food was delicious” or something like that. This will encourage them to continue to provide good service to others.
36.What does the underlined word “compliment” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.问候 B.赞美 C.抱怨 D.关注
37.What does the writer think of a compliment after saying one simple sentence?
A.Pleasant. B.Dishonest. C.Impolite. D.Humble.
38.What do we know from Paragraph 3?
A.The writer often praises taxi drivers. B.The writer speaks Chinese very well.
C.Praising others can be a way of being polite. D.Most of the compliments we receive are not true.
39.Chinese people think little of a compliment because they are _________.
A.humble B.uncomfortable C.relax D.upset
40.Which statement is TRUE?
A.The writer only compliments people in the service industry.
B.It is impolite for people to complain about bad service.
C.Everyone who served the writer got a compliment from him.
D.The writer believes that compliments can be very encouraging.
An adult usually spends about 11 hours a day looking at the screen of a cell phone, tablet, television, or computer. What all of these screens have in common is that they give off blue light, which some say is bad for our eyes. Now, a new way to keep our eyes bright could be coming soon to stores.
Blue light has been said to trouble natural sleep cycles and be bad for our eyes. This belief is based on a study made on lab mice. In the study, blue light caused harm for part of the mice’s eyes. However, the structure of the human eye is different from that of a mouse’s eye.
New studies show that blue light from phone or computer screens is no more harmful than sunlight, the largest source of blue light. Still, to get a good night’s rest, it’s best not to view any kinds of bright light two to three hours before bedtime. In addition, looking at screens for too long may cause eyestrain and could lead to a lot of eye disorders and even blindness.
Scientists now believe they have discovered a deep red light of a specific wavelength that could help to improve vision and protect our eyes as we age. In a recent study, people between the ages of 28 and 72 used a device that shone special red light into their eyes once a day. At the end of the study, the ability to detect colors improved by 20% in those over the age of 40. The best part is that the device used is simple, safe, and only costs around $15 to make, so it should be quite affordable when it hits the market.
As technology and our life become increasingly connected, it is fitting that technology could end up being both the cause of and solution to our vision problems. We can see that!
41.According to the first paragraph, spending too much time on the screen is bad for our________.
A.hands B.eyes C.backs D.stomachs
42.What is TRUE about the study made on lab mice?
A.Blue light is bad for the mice’s eyes. B.Blue light is terribly bad for human eyes.
C.Mice’s eyes are used to seeing blue light. D.Mice’s eyes are the same as those of humans.
43.What gives off the most blue light?
A.A phone screen. B.A TV screen.
C.A computer screen. D.The sun.
44.How can we describe the device giving off red light in the recent study?
A.Expensive but helpful. B.Difficult to use but cheap.
C.Helpful and not expensive. D.Very big and kind of cheap.
45.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.We can’t stay away from blue light at all.
B.Technology can help deal with vision problems.
C.No one can see the helpful technology come.

Many of us love live music — listening to a singer singing classics we love to sing along to. But while it can be lots of fun nodding our heads to the loud music, it can also harm our hearing. Studies suggest that one in ten adults have made their hearing damaged by loud noises or music.
There are lots of tiny hair- like cells (细胞) inside our ears. These cells are known as hair cells because very small stereocilia (静纤毛) sit on top of each cell. These groupings of stereocilia can be damaged when you are in a noisy environment for a long time. Once damaged, these cells cannot respond (作出反应) to sound, and therefore we are left with noise- induced hearing loss, which can be lasting. It can also leave us with ringing sounds in our ears.
So, what sounds are too loud? Sound is measured in decibels (dB) (分贝). The safe level of sound humans are thought to be able to stand is 80 dB.The booms of a firework show can reach 120 dB, the sound of a food processor can be around 85 dB, and live music can be around 110 dB.If these sounds continue for a long period of time, it puts our unprotected ears at risk.
Your hearing is important, and there are some steps you can take to be as safe as possible. Firstly, when listening to music, especially while using your headphones, make sure you keep it at a proper volume. Also, don’t get too close to the speakers that are playing music. And, if you go to live concerts, why not take some earplugs (耳塞 ) with you? Finally, if you have ringing sounds in your ears, it might be wise to speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

C.what we can do to reduce noises. D.how loud noises affect our hearing.
39.What can be a safe level of sound?
A.80 dB. B.85 dB. C.110 dB. D.120 dB.
40.What can you do to protect your ears if you are in a live concert?
A.Use headphones. B.Wear earplugs.
C.Choose a side seat. D.Stay away from the stage.
Hangzhou hosted the 19th Asian Games from September 23rd to October 8th, 2023. The Games are very “smart” thanks to the use of many exciting technologies.
The place for the tennis finals is sometimes called the “Small-Lotus (莲花)”. On the top of the stadium (体育场), there are eight “petals” (花瓣). Each petal weighs 160 tons. They can open and close freely. It takes 15 minutes for each petal to open and close. It’s built this way for different kinds of weather.
What if there’s an accident during the game and the athletes need first aid? Drones (无人机) can be used to send things over. They can fly as far as 20 kilometers and travel 16 meters in one second.
Every dish at the Asian Games should be safe and healthy to eat. In the kitchen of the athletes’ village in Hangzhou, there is a special system that can tell people’s faces. If a “stranger” goes into the kitchen, an alarm will go off to let people know.
Do you want to walk around at the stadiums but can’t make it in person? You can try the Hangzhou Asian Games’ metaverse (元宇宙)! You can try it with an app on Alipay. Inside, it’s like an online cartoon world. You can enjoy the charm of the stadiums both from the outside and inside.
It will be sad if you can’t find your way. Augmented reality (AR) is here to help. There’s a mini-program called the Hangzhou Asian Games AR service. You can just turn on your phone’s camera, and it will see where you are and then show you the way.

How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local parks? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains (大脑). However, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
As a result, some doctors are studying the connection (联系) between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a math test. During the test, their heart rates (心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than those people’s in the other group.
The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our brains to rest and slow down, and can trigger positive (积极的) feelings and a sense of peace. Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. They found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside. And Republic of Korea is another good example. It has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, maybe it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.

Sometimes, using hand gestures can be more informative and convenient than using words, especially when you can’t speak someone else’s language. But before you head out into the world using the hand gestures you already know, you may want to do some research first to find out what signs are acceptable — and where.
V for Victory?
In Asia, "V" stands for victory. But in Western countries, it can mean peace, too. When you make the sign, be sure to have the front of your palm facing outward. Showing people the back of your hand is an impolite gesture in the UK.
L for Loser.
The letter "L", made with your thumb and index finger, stands for "Loser" and is an insult. So it’s best to avoid making this sign.
Blah-blah-blah!
This gesture looks like a talking mouth. It is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little. It’s also a little rude.
Fingers Crossed.
Crossing the index and middle fingers is used to wish for good luck. Students might make this sign before an exam. Of course, it doesn’t actually help!
ILY Sign.
This really nice hand gesture is from American Sign Language. It combines the letters "I" "L" and "Y" to mean "I love you".
Counting with Fingers.
And finally, for the most useful signs — how to count the numbers from one to ten. Notice how English-speaking countries use both hands instead of one. So the next time you go to a market in the US, remember to use these signs to bargain.
26.How many gestures are mentioned in the passage?
A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6.
27.When a young man falls in love with a beautiful lady, which of the following signs he may make to her?
A.B lah-blah-blah. B.Fingers Crossed.
C.ILY Sign. D.Counting with Fingers.
28.When you make the sign "V", it’s to show people the back of your hand in the UK.
A.ictory B.peace C.polite D.rude
29.Lily is hanging out with her mother in the mall now. They may use the sign when shopping.
A.V B.Counting with Fingers
C.Fingers Crossed D.L
30.According to the passage, which is TRUE?
A.It’s best to avoid making "L" sign because it is an insult.
B.Crossing the index and your thumb fingers is used to wish for good luck.
C.ILY Sign is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little.
D.You can make "V" gesture anywhere because it always stands for victory.

Do We Really Need Smart Cities?
Cities around the world are racing to become “smart”. It’s just like a classroom full of hard-working students. Take Toronto, Canada, for example. Technology (Tech) company Google has made a 1,500-page plan. It’s going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting (融雪的) roads.
To build smart cities, we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy (隐私).
But there is a more serious problem: Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know all too well from our personal lives, sometimes tech products are not dependable. The Internet and our computers break down regularly. Tech products also age quickly. Only a few years into their lives, problems may become more and more common.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly? Can you imagine the result?
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025. If we use smart technologies widely in cities, we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill?
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving city problems. Smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own. Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to do the job, doesn’t it?
As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our city problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas work better.
61.The underlined word “students” in Paragraph 1 refers to “_____”.
A.cities in Canada B.advanced technologies
C.cities around the world D.people living in the cities
62.What is tech company Google going to do?
A.Invent snow-melting roads. B.Remake 2 neighborhoods in Toronto.
C.Keep the company more efficient. D.Make a plan for rebuilding Toronto.
63.What do we need to build smart cities according to the passage?
A.The best of old ideas. B.Lots of new technologies.
C.More building materials. D.The Internet and computers.
64.The example of a road that needs to be repaired is used to show __________.
A.tech products break down regularly in smart cities
B.it is difficult and expensive to manage a smart city
C.smart technologies can't solve problems on their own
D.many new technologies become outdated in five years
65.Which of the following titles is also suitable for this passage?
A.How People Build a Smart City B.The Smartest City in the World
C.The Advantages of Smart Cities D.Why I Don’t Support Smart Cities

It is widely agreed that the overuse of coal and oil has caused serious environmental problems. Scientists are trying to find new clean energies that do not pollute the air, the water or the ground. Solar power(太阳能)is one of them.
Solar power is a kind of electricity which is produced by taking energy from the sun, using solar panels(面板,电池板). The power is easy to get and will never be used up. Whenever it is sunny, there is the power. The power is clean and renewable. It helps to reduce waste and pollution, which is great for the environment. For some areas that are too far away to send electricity to, solar power is especially necessary. People there use solar power for lights, TVs, computers, washing machines, fridges and many other things.
Therefore, more and more countries, such as China, the USA, Japan and India, encourage scientists to develop practical(实用的)technology to put solar power to use. However, the power is not as widely used as expected(预期的).
One of the challenges(挑战)is that a solar power system needs sunshine. Countries or areas with a lot of rain, like the UK, are not suitable to develop such power systems(系统). Secondly, a solar power station requires a very large site(地点)to fix(安装)enough solar panels to collect sunlight and change it into electricity. What’s more, solar panels are expensive at present though the energy itself doesn’t cost anything.
Today scientists are working hard to develop more practical and cheaper solar power systems. Maybe one day solar power will be one of the most important clean energies in our life.

C.Because fixing solar panels needs very large sites. D.All of A, B and C.
39.What is the main idea for the Paragraph 4?
A.The ways to use solar power. B.The advantages of solar power.
C.The places to build the solar power stations. D.The difficulties of putting solar power to use widely.
40.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Solar energy itself is expensive. B.Solar power will be used up very soon.
C.Solar power is a kind of clean and useful energy. D.Solar power is much better than the other energies.
What are fossils?
Fossils are the remains of plants or animals. For such remains to be considered fossils, scientists have decided they have to be over 10,000 years old. The word fossil comes from the Latin word “fossilis”, which means, “dig up”. Fossils can be divided into “body fossils” and “trace(痕迹) fossils”. Body fossils are the remains of a plant or animal’s body. Trace fossils are the remains of the activity of an animal, such as footprints, egg shells, and nests.
How are fossils formed?
Some animals were quickly covered after their death by sediment(沉淀物) like earth, mud or sand. Over time, the parts of the animals that didn’t rot (usually the harder parts like bones and teeth) were covered in the newly formed sediment. Then, a lot of chemical changes happened to the animals bodies. Water with minerals(矿物质) went into the bone and took the place of the chemicals in the bone with rock-like minerals. In the end we get a heavy, rock-like copy of the original object - a fossil. There weren’t any changes in size and shape when an object changed into a fossil, but the fossil of a bone doesn’t have any bone in it! It is chemically more like a rock! According to scientists, fossils have been found on every continent(大陆) on Earth.
41.Trace fossils can’t be formed from the ______ of some kind of animals.
A.footprints B.nests C.eggs D.bodies
42.______ brings the rock-like minerals into the bone.
A.Sunlight B.Earth C.Water D.Air
43.According to the last paragraph, the fossil is as ______ as the original object.

As climate change brings dangers to people, we are now facing another problem—underground climate change. With the development of cities, the rising underground temperature is causing the ground to heat up and deform, reported a research team from Northwestern University, US.
In the last three years, the team had put more than 150 temperature sensors under Chicago. The places include subway tunnels (隧道), underground parking lots and basements (地下室) of buildings. The temperatures they recorded were surprising. For example, air temperatures in underground structures can be up to 25℃ higher compared to the undisturbed ground temperature. After collecting data in Chicago, the team created computer models to see how temperatures will influence the ground until 2051.
When heated, some soft materials may contract (收缩), and other materials, such as stone, may expand (膨胀) in size. The models showed that warmer temperatures can cause the ground to expand upward by as much as 1.2 centimeters, or sink downward by as much as 0.8 centimeters. This may even cause the ground to crack (开裂), leaving people who live and work above in dangerous situations.
“The effects can be very bad, but it takes a long time to see them,” Rotta Loria, who led the study, said in a report. As scientists have already known a lot about underground climate change, future plans for cities should take it into consideration. Materials that take in heat can be used to keep the heat from entering the ground.
The team also pointed out that the rising temperature could be seen as an opportunity. City planners can try to collect heat underground and send it above for heating.
61.Which place might belong to the “undisturbed ground”?
A.Forests. B.Subway tunnels.
C.Basements of buildings. D.Underground parking lots.
62.What did the research team find in Chicago?

B.The underground temperature has risen to 25℃.
C.Local underground temperatures are rising.
D.Climate change affects the underground temperature.
63.Which of following may be caused by underground climate change?
A.Cracking in the ground. B.Contractions in buildings.
C.Expansions of soft materials. D.More earthquakes.
64.To lower underground temperature, researchers suggested ________.
A.we use materials that take in heat B.we collect heat underground
C.we cut down human activities D.we protect the underground environment
65.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What the team will study in the future. B.How to make use of the rising underground heat.
C.How to control the temperature underground. D.What the results will be if we don’t take action.

In the world of gestures, the best suggestion is to remember the two A’s-Ask and Aware(意识到). If you see a gesture that is new or puzzling, ask a local person what it means. Then be aware of the body signs around you. Let’s check out three common hand gestures, the OK-Sign, the Thumb-Up and the V-Sign.
1. The OK-Sign
This gesture was popular in the USA during the early 19th century by the newspapers that were starting using first letters to shorten common phrases. Use the gesture to tell a French person their cooking is wonderful and maybe they’ll throw you out. In Japan, it can mean money. If you travel internationally, the safest rule is to always ask the locals to show you their insult (侮辱) signs to avoid any possible uncomfortable situations.
2. The Thumb-Up
When Europeans count from one to five, they use the Thumb-Up to mean one and the index finger (食指) becomes two; but most English-speaking people count one on the index finger and two on the middle finger, in this case, the Thumb-Up will mean the number five; it’s commonly used by hitch-hikers(搭便车的人) who are thumbing a lift; it is an OK-Sign; and when the thumb is sharply upwards, it becomes an insult.
3. The V-Sign
Winston Churchill popularized the V-for-victory sign during the World War II, but his two-fingered gesture was done with the palm (手掌) facing out. What about the palm faces towards the speaker? It would be an insult.
36.The best suggestion in the world of gestures is ________.

There is great excitement and argument(争论)over Artificial Intelligence(AI, 人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting. but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons, Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence(情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction(互相作用), and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But it hasn’t been proved that robots can imitate this well.
I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decisions. These are skills that they can get as they get more life experience and are given the space to experiment.
To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data(数据)you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

A.telling stories B.comparing views
C.raising questions D.giving suggestions
42.We can learn that some people think a good teacher might be able to ________.
A.use AI as much as possible in the class teaching
B.help kids think more freely and creatively than AI
C.have high intelligence to deal with the heavy teaching work

43.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why teachers can be replaced in classrooms. B.There is argument over Artificial Intelligence.
C.How helpful AI can be to both students and teachers. D.AI is only being used successfully in education.
44.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

36.The underlined word “damaged” means ________ in Chinese.
A.瘫倒 B.损坏 C.取消 D.废除
37.What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Live music should be canceled. B.People should listen to soft music.
C.People are deeply troubled by noise. D.Loud noises could cause hearing damage.
38.The second paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.the dangers of loud noises. B.the causes of hearing loss in people.

三、阅读理解

福建省厦门外国语学校石狮分校2023-2024学年九年级上学期期中考试英语试题
【答案】
61.C 62.B 63.B 64.C 65.D

65.标题归纳题。根据“As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our city problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas work better.”(作为一名工程师,我认为智能技术应该在城市中占有一席之地。然而,这个地方并不是到处都是。对于我们的许多城市问题,我们并不需要最新的技术。最好的旧想法效果更好。)以及全文可知,作者不太支持智慧城市的想法,故选D。

A.heavy B.big C.old D.clean
44.We can know that ______ from the passage.
A.scientists think that the fossils may have a history of 100 centuries.
B.people haven’t found any fossil on the continent of Africa.
C.we can find some real bones in the fossils of a bone.
D.there are many kinds of sediment in the fossils.
45.This passage most probably comes from ______.
A.an advertisement B.a medical magazine
C.a science book D.a notice

A.to ask a local person what they mean B.to know the body signs around you
C.to check out three common hand gestures D.to remember the two A’s-Ask and Aware

B.There is argument over Artificial Intelligence.
C.How helpful AI can be to both students and teachers.
D.AI is only being used successfully in education.
