Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬出), I saw how you could learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful “language”.
My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority. Guiding my explorations into this strange pew landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing oneself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could develop a person into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the adhesion between us and the world. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology, rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.
4. Why does the author like rock climbing?
A. It challenges her to compete with men.
B. It allows her a unique attitude toward rock.
C. It makes her feel connected with the earth.
D. It teaches her how to possess a new language.
5. What does the writer find important in climbing?
A. Balance. B. Concentration. C. Determination. D. Perseverance
6. What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd?
A. Every mountaintop is within reach.
B. Climbing goes together with nature.
C. The best climber is the one having fun.
D. You cannot achieve high unless you change.
7. What does the underlined word “adhesion”in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Process. B. Progress. C. Connection. D. Altitude.
C 5. B 6. B 7. C
根据最后一段中“This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.(这种联系是我热爱攀岩的核心。我回到岩石上,因为在这里我感觉与我们的土地有联系)”可知,作者喜欢攀岩是因为它让她感觉与地球有联系。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.(与散步不同,在散步时我可以心不在焉地漫步,而在攀岩时,专注的观察是至关重要的)”可知,作者在攀岩中发现专注很重要。
根据第四段中“Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements.(与许多登山者以目标为导向的心态不同,她并不关心山峰或个人成就。Shepherd把山看作是一个整体环境,她把凯恩戈姆山脉视为一个充满植物、岩石、动物和元素的有生命的地方)”可知,Nan Shepherd并不关心登顶或个人成就,她把山看作是一个整体的环境,她赞颂凯恩戈姆山脉是一个充满生命的地方。由此可推知,作者从Nan Shepherd那里学到了攀岩是与自然融为一体的。故选B项。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology, rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth.(我已经与超越日常的过程有了身体上的接触。通过与重力、地质、天气节奏和深时的工作,我与地球建立了实际的关系)”可知,作者在攀岩过程中与地球建立了实际的关系,即作者与地球之间有了某种联系,再结合“Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the adhesion between us and the world.(在高耸多石的地方呆了这么久,改变了我对我们与世界之间adhesion的看法)”可推知,改变的就是“联系”,划线词adhesion与下文connection同义。故选C项。

Though writing by hand is increasingly being overshadowed by the ease of computers, a new study finds handwriting helps people learn certain skills surprisingly faster and significantly better than learning the same material through typing or watching videos.
Brenda Rapp, a professor of cognitive science in Johns Hopkins University, led an experiment, in which 42 people were taught the Arabic alphabet, split into three groups of learners: writers, typers and video watchers. Everyone learned the letters one at a time by watching videos of them being written along with hearing names and sounds. After being introduced to each letter, the three groups would attempt to learn what they just saw and heard in different ways. The video group got an on-screen flash of a letter and had to recognize it. The typers would have to find the letter on the keyboard. The writers had to copy the letter with pen and paper. After as many as six sessions, the writing group reached this level of proficiency (熟练) faster than the other groups.
Next the researchers wanted to determine to what extent the groups could generalize this new knowledge. In other words, they could all recognize the letters, but could anyone really use them like a professional by writing with them, using them to spell new words and using them to read unfamiliar words? The writing group was best — decisively — in all of those things.
Rapp says it’s because handwriting reinforces the visual and aural lessons. The simple act of writing by hand provides a perceptual-motor (感知运动) experience that unifies what is being learned about the letters (their shapes, their sounds, and their motor plans), which in turn creates richer knowledge and fuller true-learning.
Although the participants in the study were adults, the researchers expect they’d see the same results in children. The findings have implications for classrooms, where pencils and notebooks have taken a backseat in recent years to tablets and laptops.
8. In this study, what is the advantage of writing by hand?
A. It contributes to a faster and better learning. B. It can’t be replaced by computers and Internet.
C. It combines visual and aural images into study. D. It never makes any mistake in the six sessions.
9. How were the people divided into groups in the experiment?
A. On the basis of their interest in letters. B. According to their way of learning letters.
C. Considering the time spent in learning letters. D. By their levels of proficiency in letters.
10. What effect do the researchers expect the study have on students?
A. Uncertain. B. Negative. C. Beneficial. D. Challenging.
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To advertise a method. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To introduce a research. D. To explain a phenomenon.
A 9. B 10. C 11. C

根据文章第一段“a new study finds handwriting helps people learn certain skills surprisingly faster and significantly better than learning the same material through typing or watching videos (一项新的研究发现,手写帮助人们学习某些技能的速度惊人地快,而且比通过打字或观看视频学习相同的材料要好得多)”可知,研究发现,手写的优势在于能更快更好的学习。故选A。
根据文章第二段“42 people were taught the Arabic alphabet, split into three groups of learners: writers, typers and video watchers (42人被分为三组学习者:作家、打字员和视频观看者)”以及“After being introduced to each letter, the three groups would attempt to learn what they just saw and heard in different ways. (在这些字母被介绍给每一个人后,三组人将尝试用不同的方式学习他们刚刚看到和听到的东西)”可推知。在实验中,受试者是按照学习字母的方式来分类的。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,再根据文章最后一段“Although the participants in the study were adults, the researchers expect they’d see the same results in children. The findings have implications for classrooms, where pencils and notebooks have taken a backseat in recent years to tablets and laptops.
通读全文,再根据文章第二段“Brenda Rapp, a professor of cognitive science in Johns Hopkins University, led an experiment (约翰·霍普金斯大学认知科学教授Brenda Rapp领导了一项实验)”以及“Although the participants in the study were adults, the researchers expect they’d see the same results in children. (尽管这项研究的参与者都是成年人,但研究人员预计他们在儿童身上也能看到同样的结果)”可推知,本文是一篇研究性文章,介绍了手写在学习中优于键盘打字和观看视频,故写作目的为介绍一项研究。故选C。

Killer whales are mama’s boys. A son will follow his mother, taking bits of fish and other food, throughout his life, even as his sisters grow up and have babies of their own. This neediness comes at a significant cost to mom, who gives up having additional children to look after her boy, according to a new study.
Michael Weiss has observed the mother-son bond in killer whale groups off the Pacific coast of North America. “It’s kind of wild,” says the behavioral ecologist. These animals live for decades, yet even fully grown males “act like little kids around their mom, rolling around and swimming right beside and behind her like they're still babies”.
Weiss wanted to know whether these high-maintenance children came at a cost — particularly, whether they hurt a mother’s ability to raise more children. He and colleagues studied 40 years’ worth of data on three Pacific pods (小群动物), social groups typically consisting of a couple dozen killer whale mothers and sons that traveled and hunted fish together. Sure enough, the team found a “huge effect”, Weiss says.
In a given year, mothers of sons were less than half as likely to have another baby as were childless females or mothers of daughters. Strikingly, both a 3-year-old son and an 18-year-old son lowered their mom’s chances of having more children, Weiss says.
The researchers suggest mom’s favoritism toward her boys developed because of the particular social structure of these pods. When a daughter gives birth, her babies stay in the same group as her and her mom and therefore compete with the rest for food and attention. By contrast, a son doesn’t bring more mouths into the group — he mates with females in passing pods who then go on to raise children in their own social units.
His kids are thus “someone else’s problem”, Weiss explains. So, it makes sense for mom to give more energy to him than to his sisters if she wants as many grandchildren as possible with the least competition.
The team didn’t establish exactly how sons prevented their mothers from having more babies. Weiss says he hopes to do more research across populations, and in different species of whales. But now, killer whales remain an extreme example of parental care across the animal kingdom. “In other animals,” he says, “at some point, you just stop relying on your mom as much.”
12 What can we learn about a mother killer whale’s chance of having more babies?
A. It is independent of her son’s age. B. A mother of a son won’t have another baby.
C. A mother of daughters has the least chance. D. It changes with the social structure of the pod.
13. What can be inferred from the research?
A. Male killer wales can’t grow fully.
B. Male killer wales are precious in their social structure.
C. Baby killer wales live with their grandmother.
D. Baby killer wales compete against their father for food.
14. Why do mother killer whales favor their boys?
A. To increase the pod’s population. B. To compete with other pods.
C. To gain support from boys. D. To save food.
15. What does Weiss think of the mother-son bond in killer whale groups?
A. It is extremely rare in nature. B. It shows that killer whales have feelings.
C. It doesn’t exist in other species of whales. D. It slows male killer whales’ development.
A 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据第四段中“In a given year, mothers of sons were less than half as likely to have another baby as were childless females or mothers of daughters. Strikingly, both a 3-year-old son and an 18-year-old son lowered their mom’s chances of having more children, Weiss says.(在某一年里,有儿子的母亲生育另一个孩子的可能性不到无子女女性或有女儿的母亲的一半。引人注目的是,无论是3岁的儿子还是18岁的儿子,都会降低他们母亲再生更多孩子的几率,Weiss说)”可知,无论是3岁的儿子还是18岁的儿子,都会降低母亲再生育的机会。即母鲸鱼是否有更多孩子与她儿子的年龄无关。故选A。
根据第五段“The researchers suggest mom’s favoritism toward her boys developed because of the particular social structure of these pods. When a daughter gives birth, her babies stay in the same group as her and her mom and therefore compete with the rest for food and attention. By contrast, a son doesn’t bring more mouths into the group — he mates with females in passing pods who then go on to raise children in their own social units.(研究人员提出,母亲对儿子的偏爱是因为这些群体特有的社会结构而发展的。
根据第六段“His kids are thus “someone else’s problem”, Weiss explains. So, it makes sense for mom to give more energy to him than to his sisters if she wants as many grandchildren as possible with the least competition.(他的孩子们因此变成了“别人的问题”,Weiss解释道。因此,如果妈妈想要在最少的竞争下获得尽可能多的孙子孙女,她给予儿子更多的精力而不是女儿,这是有道理的)”这表明母亲偏爱儿子的原因之一是为了节约食物,减少群体内的竞争。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But now, killer whales remain an extreme example of parental care across the animal kingdom.(但现在,虎鲸仍然是动物王国中父母抚育的一个极端例子)”可知,Weiss认为母子关系在虎鲸群体中是极端的例子,这在自然界中是非常罕见的。故选A。
Why is it important to think in English? Things will just be easier and faster if you don’t translate so much. ____16____ That’s very unrealistic, particularly if it’s not the only language you speak. But the more you practice, the easier it becomes. So, what can be done to help you think in English?
•____17____
Nowadays, most people look at their phones or computers constantly. If you change the language to English, not only will you possibly learn some new vocabulary, but English will become a bigger part of your daily life. Besides, think about the apps that you use frequently and change the language settings.
•Describe what you see in English in your head.
You can do this when you’re sitting at home, walking in a park, or traveling on a train. If you’re a beginner or you’re feeling lazy or you don’t have much energy, you can just use single words.____18____
•Imagine sentences you might use in a conversation.
It can also be a good idea to write sentences down and practice saying them so that they almost become automatic. ____19____ For example, if you’ve recently reached an English-speaking country and you’ll attend a party, it’s possible that people will ask you questions, like where you’re from or what your plans are.
•Think of what you’ve done at the end of the day in English.
Before you go to bed, you can also write them down. If you think that will take too much time, a nice alterative is just writing down positive things. ____20____ Not only might that put you in a better mood, but you are also likely to finish tasks more efficiently.
A. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
B. Try to think in English as much as possible.
C. However, it is better if you can use full sentences.
D. Change the language of your electronic devices and apps.
E. Try to predict the types of conversations that you will have.
F. So, anything that made you happy or that you enjoyed is OK.
G. It doesn’t mean you have to be thinking in English all the time.
G 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. F
空前“Things will just be easier and faster if you don’t translate so much. (如果你不翻译那么多,事情会变得更简单更快)”讲述在用英语思考时,不要过多翻译,空后“That’s very unrealistic, particularly if it’s not the only language you speak. (这是非常不现实的,特别是如果这不是你唯一会说的语言)”强调该空的做法不现实,所以G选项“It doesn’t mean you have to be thinking in English all the time. (这并不意味着你必须一直用英语思考)”符合题意,承上启下,选项中的“thinking in English all the time”呼应前文的“don’t translate so much”,后文进一步解释一直用英语思考这件事不现实。故选G。
【17题详解】
由后面段落的结构和位置可知,该空是本段的主旨句,且是祈使句结构。根据空后“Nowadays, most people look at their phones or computers constantly. If you change the language to English, not only will you possibly learn some new vocabulary, but English will become a bigger part of your daily life. Besides, think about the apps that you use frequently and change the language settings. (如今,大多数人经常看他们的手机或电脑。如果你把语言换成英语,你不仅可能会学到一些新词汇,而且英语将成为你日常生活中更大的一部分。此外,考虑一下你经常使用的应用程序,并更改语言设置)”强调把平时用的手机或电脑中的语言改成英语,所以D选项“Change the language of your electronic devices and apps. (改变你的电子设备和应用程序的语言)”符合本段主题。故选D。
【18题详解】
空前“If you’re a beginner or you’re feeling lazy or you don’t have much energy, you can just use single words. (如果你是初学者,或者你觉得懒惰,或者你没有太多精力,你可以只用单个单词去表达英文)”强调用单词去表达英语,C选项“However, it is better if you can use full sentences. (然而,如果你能使用完整的句子就更好了)”承接上文,强调用完整的句子去表达英语会更好,和前一句形成对比。故选C。
【19题详解】
本段的主题是“Imagine sentences you might use in a conversation. (想象一下你在对话中可能用到的句子)”,所以本段都在围绕imagine sentences这一主题。E选项“Try to predict the types of conversations that you will have. (试着预测你们将要进行的对话类型)”中的“predict”呼应主题imagine;且承接下文,空后“For example, if you’ve recently reached an English-speaking country and you’ll attend a party, it’s possible that people will ask you questions, like where you’re from or what your plans are. (例如,如果你最近到了一个说英语的国家,你要参加一个聚会,人们可能会问你问题,比如你从哪里来,你的计划是什么)”用具体的例子来解释如何预测对话类型。故选E。
【20题详解】
空前“If you think that will take too much time, a nice alterative is just writing down positive things. (如果你认为这将花费太多时间,一个不错的选择是写下积极的事情)”作者建议如果觉得花费太久,可以写下积极的事情,F选项“So, anything that made you happy or that you enjoyed is OK. (所以,任何让你开心或喜欢的事情都可以)”承接上文,选项中的“happy”和“enjoyed”呼应前文所说的“positive things”。故选F。

The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side. Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said.
Sadie patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said. Ren stepped on the diving board, vputting his goggles (护目镜)vover his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏),and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you use your arms or legs?”Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes.“I can’t swim. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water.”
Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry. I will teach you how to swim. The water is my favourite place to be.”Ren thought for a while, and nodded gently.

Ren and Sadie finished gym class and walked home together. Sadie said to Ren gently and sincerely, “as your friend, I hope you can tell me why you are afraid of water.” Hesitating for a second, he shared an experience that he was once narrowly drowned in the river. “Let’s face and overcome it together.” Sadie said firmly. From then on, Sadie tried all means to help Ren. Gradually Ren overcame his fear and he swam freely in the pool. Sadie even encouraged him to take part in the coming swimming race. When that day came, Ren stepped on the diving board and he kept calm and attentive.
The gym teacher blew the whistle and this time Ren dived bravely. He swam to the other side with incredible speed and technique. The gym teacher walked to the other side of the gym and knelt down. “Incredible, Ren!” The gym teacher helped him out of the water, shaking his hand excitedly and cheerfully. “Congratulations, you pass!” Ren held his fist tight and waved to Sadie gratefully with tears in eyes. Sometimes, it is the encouragement and support from your loved ones that help you step out of your comfort zone and overcome yourself, to develop the potential to the fullest.

A Process. B. Progress. C. Connection. D. Altitude.

D
Weiss wanted to know whether these high-maintenance children came at a cost — particularly whether they hurt a mother’s ability to raise more children.
12. What can we learn about a mother killer whale’s chance of having more babies?
