June is around the corner, meaning summer is almost here! we’ve asked our book critics for some advice: What upcoming fiction and nonfiction are they most looking forward to reading? Here’s a look:
Daughter of the Merciful Deep by Leslye Penelope
I was hooked when I first saw the gorgeous cover for Daughter of the Merciful Deep by Leslye Penelope. But the novel’s premise put it at the top of my summer reading list. Penelope is known for unforgettable characters, world—building, beautiful writing and robust Storytelling. Her latest work, inspired by actual events —the drowned Black towns of the American South —promises a magical, mythical and powerful tale of a young woman’s quest to save her town. A historical fantasy must—read. (July 4)—Denny Bryce
The Lucky Ones by Zara Chowdhary
In 2002, two train carriages were set on fire in Gujarat, India. Within three weeks, more than 2, 000 Muslims were murdered in response by Hindu mobs. By the end of the year, more than 50, 000 Muslims became refugees in their own country. The Lucky Ones is a unique biography in English of this largest—ever massacre in independent India. It is also about a communal crisis bringing a fractured family together. A must—read in our warring world today. (July 16)—Jenny Bhatt
Liars by Sarah Manguso
I have long been a fan of Sarah Manguso’s crystalline prose, from her fragmented illness biography The Two Kinds of Decay to her tightly constrained 2022 novel Very Cold People. Her second novel, Liars, marries restraint with rage—in it, Manguso traces the full are of a 15-year relationship between Jane, a successful writer, and John, a dilettante artist—cum一 techie, in aphoristic vignettes. The result is a furious, propulsive meditation on wifehood, motherhood and artistic ambition. (July 23)—Kristen Martin

Selina Zhang, a high schooler, has invented a trap that could potentially get rid of lanternflies in the city. She first noticed this pest in grade school. At the time, Zhang was visiting a market near her hometown. The colorful bugs caught her eye, and she was intrigued as she had never seen a bug quite like it.
Zhang’s first encounter with the spotted lanternfly relates to the quote, “Not all that glitters is gold. ”This bug with bright red underwings standing out from black forewings might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem.
This insect has a healthy appetite for most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits. This invasive pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily infested areas. It is known to be a nuisance (讨厌的东西) in outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles.
Zhang eventually realized that this insect posed a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. Most people choose insecticides to manage this invasion, but this can leave harmful remains affecting crucial pollinators. Some others use a sticky band wrapped around a tree trunk to trap pests. This method is also unsafe as it can trap other small animals and insects in its grip.
In search of an ecologically acceptable method, Zhang got inspiration from chess boards and the“Dance Dance Revolution”. She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks on end, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time and navigated unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study, Zhang knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella from her family’s patio.
She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created an solar-powered, self-cleaning“tree”that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic mesh (网).
4. What does the quote “Not all that glitters is gold” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Things looking valuable may be worthless.
B. Zhang’s hometown fails to get rid of the bug.
C. Bodies of the beautiful lanternfly are glowing.
D. The bug destroys agricultural industry despite its beauty.
5. What can be learned about lanternflies?
A. They live on greens and animals.
B. They have a bad effect on people’s life.
C. People hate them laying eggs everywhere.
D. Their underwings are shorter than their forewings.
6. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The application of the trap. B. The source of the trap.
C. The process of inventing the trap. D. The challenges of designing the trap.
7. Which of the following can best describe Zhang?
A. Persistent and innovative. B. Creative and modest.
C. Reliable and knowledgeable. D. Intelligent and confident
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. A

The summer reading season is here. Some people will opt for paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option?
According to 2023 data from the literary industry research group Words Rated, when it comes to pulp (纸浆) and paper, print book publishing is the world’s third-largest industrial greenhouse gas producer, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the United States to make paper for books.
So many publishers are switching to on-demand printing. For example, Chronicle Books, are reducing their initial print runs to see how well the titles sell before they print more. “We felt that it was better to have a higher cost and have less waste,” said Chronic le Books president, Tyrrell Mahoney.
Publishers are also rethinking book design. It might be a surprise, but certain fonts (字体) can be more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper.
Digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees, pulping and shipping. Moreover, tech companies that make e-readers such as Amazon, which sells the market-leading Kindle e-reader, offer recycling programs for old devices.
“By choosing e-books as an alternative to print, Kindle readers helped save an estimated 2.3 million metric tons of carbon emissions over a two-year period,” said Corey Badcock, head of Kindle product and marketing.
But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint mainly at the producing stage. Their cases are made with fossil-fuel-derived plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.
Berners-Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything , said the average e-reader has a carbon footprint of around 80 pounds. “This means that I’ve got to read about 36 small paperback books-worth on it before you break even,” he said.
“If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do,” Berners-Lee said. “But if I buy it, read a couple of books, and decide that I prefer paperback books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.”
8. Why are publishers switching to on-demand printing?
A. To further reduce costs.
B. To increase market sales.
C. To make books more durable.
D. To be more environmentally friendly.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards digital devices’ carbon footprint?
A. Optimistic. B. Dismissive. C. Objective. D. Defensive.
10. What can we say about the carbon footprint of reading according to Berners-Lee?
A. Heavy e-readers will have a lower carbon footprint.
B. Paperback readers contribute less to carbon emissions.
C. The carbon footprint of reading is unworthy of attention.
D. There’s no way to measure the carbon footprint of e-readers.
11 What is the best title for the text?
A. An Eco-Debate: Is My E-Reader Really Greener?
B. The Decline of Paper: A Look at Modern Publishing
C. The Future of Reading: E-ink Technology Advances
D What’s Better for the Climate: A Paper Book or an E-Reader?
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. D

(根据文学产业研究机构Words Rated 2023年的数据,在纸浆和纸张方面,印刷图书出版业是世界第三大工业温室气体排放国,美国每年有3200万棵树被砍伐,用于制造书籍的纸张。)”和第三段中“So many publishers are switching to on-demand printing.( 因此,许多出版商正在转向按需印刷。)”可知,出版商转向按需印刷是因为这样更环保。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中“By choosing e-books as an alternative to print, Kindle readers helped save an estimated2.3 million metric tons of carbon emissions over a two-year period (通过选择电子书代替纸质书,Kindle阅读器在两年的时间里减少了230万吨的碳排放。)”和第七段“But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, mainly at the producing stage.(但数字设备也会产生大量的碳足迹,主要是在生产阶段。)”可知,作者客观陈述了数字设备的碳足迹。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do.(如果你买了一个电子阅读器,然后在上面读了很多很多的书,那么这是碳排放最低的事情。)”可知,Berners-Lee认为容量大的电子阅读器的碳足迹较低。故选A项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读前文,根据第一段中“Some people will opt for paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option? (有些人会选择平装书,因为它们很容易借阅和分享。其他人则会选择电子阅读器。但哪一个是更环保的可持续选择呢?)”可知,本文主要谈论了纸质书和电子阅读器,哪个更环保。D“哪个对气候更好:纸质书还是电子阅读器?”符合主题,故选D项。

There is a strong smell that comes off Ratna Raju’s farm in the southeastern Andhra Pradesh state of India. The smell comes from a mixture of natural materials, like cow waste and untreated sugar. The natural materials help grow and protect crops in an area often hit by extreme weather and heat.
Farmers like Raju say natural materials protect their crops from climate change because the soil can hold more water. And they stress the crops’ stronger roots help plants deal with strong winds. Supporters say natural farming is successful in the state because of government support. Now, these methods should be spread across India’s agricultural lands. Without government support for natural farming, most Indian farmers still use farm chemicals and fertilizers. That puts them at risk when extreme weather hits. Many farmers are calling for greater state investment to help them deal with climate change.
Last December, a storm brought heavy rainfall across India’s southeastern coast. It flooded towns and fields. Early studies showed more than 240,000 hectares of crops were destroyed in Andhra Pradesh state.
Raju said the rainwater on their farms flowed into the ground in one day. The soil can take in more water because it is less solid than soil with farm chemicals. Soil with farm chemicals is dry. He added that planting different crops throughout the year helped keep the soil healthy. However, Raju’s neighbor, Srikanth Kanapala, said his farm was flooded for four days after the storm. Kanapala often uses farm chemicals and fertilizers on his farm. And he said seeing Raju’s crops held strong while his crops failed made him want to learn about other farming methods.
Kanapala expected a potential financial hemorrhage of up to $600 as a consequence of the storm, a sum that constituted a significant economic burden for a farmer in India. “For the next planting season, I plan to learn from other farmers to give up farm chemicals,” he said.
12. What drives the expansion of natural farming in India?
A. The limited farms. B. The climate impact on crops.
C. The increased use of chemicals. D. The reduction of fertilizers.
13. What can be inferred about farm chemicals from paragraph 4?
A. They help crops grow strong roots.
B. They enhance soil’s water absorption.
C. They ensure soil remains consistently wet.
D. They make crops less resistant to the storm.
14. What does the underlined word “hemorrhage” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Loss. B. Increase. C. Benefit. D. Aid.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Chemicals: Harming Indian Farms
B. Storms: a Threat to Indian Farmers
C. Natural Farming: an Answer to Extreme Weather
D. Indian Agriculture: Facing the Effect of Climate Change
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了自然农业中的一种天然材料可以保护农民的作物免受气候变化的影响。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Farmers like Raju say natural materials protect their crops from climate change because the soil can hold more water. And they stress the crops’ stronger roots help plants deal with strong winds. Supporters say natural farming is successful in the state because of government support. Now, these methods should be spread across India’s agricultural lands.(像拉朱这样的农民说,天然材料可以保护他们的作物免受气候变化的影响,因为土壤可以容纳更多的水。他们还强调,作物结实的根系有助于植物应对强风。支持者表示,由于政府的支持,自然农业在该州取得了成功。)”可知,气候对农作物的影响推动了印度自然农业的发展。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Soil with farm chemicals is dry. He added that planting different crops throughout the year helped keep the soil healthy. However, Raju’s neighbor, Srikanth Kanapala, said his farm was flooded for four days after the storm. Kanapala often uses farm chemicals and fertilizers on his farm.(施用农药的土壤是干燥的。他补充说,全年种植不同的作物有助于保持土壤健康。然而,Raju的邻居Srikanth Kanapala说,风暴过后,他的农场被洪水淹没了四天。Kanapala经常在他的农场使用农药和化肥。)”可知,农药会使作物对暴风雨的抵抗力降低。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句后文“a sum that constituted a significant economic burden for a farmer in India(对印度的一个农民来说,这是一笔巨大的经济负担。)”说明农民的经济损失巨大,从而推知划线词句“Kanapala expected a potential financial hemorrhage of up to $600 as a consequence of the storm(Kanapala预计,这场风暴可能造成高达600美元的经济hemorrhage)”其中划线词应为“损失”的意思,与A项同义。故选A项。
【15题详解】

When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. ____16____Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.

____18____ When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted.____19____But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”.____20____ However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.

Penelope is known for unforgettable characters world—building, beautiful writing and robust Storytelling. Her latest work, inspired by actual events —the drowned Black towns of the American South —promises a magical, mythical and powerful tale of a young woman’s quest to save her town. A historical fantasy must—read. (July 4)—Denny Bryce

But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, mainly at the producing stage. Their cases are made with fossil-fuel-derived plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.
Berners-Lee the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything , said the average e-reader has a carbon footprint of around 80 pounds.
A Heavy e-readers will have a lower carbon footprint.
B. Paperback readers contribute less to carbon emissions.
C The carbon footprint of reading is unworthy of attention.
D. There’s no way to measure the carbon footprint of e-readers.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. An Eco-Debate: Is My E-Reader Really Greener?
B. The Decline of Paper: A Look at Modern Publishing
C. The Future of Reading: E-ink Technology Advances
D. What’s Better for the Climate: A Paper Book or an E-Reader?
D
