After looking for arguments and supporting details, I have to ask you, what methods do writers often use to support their arguments?
a. citing ideas from experts or authorities
All right everyone, I think it is time to check answers. The first one, citing ideas from experts or authorities. Both Robert and Cathy used this method. 【鼠标】Robert used it from line 5 to 7: According to a parenting expert, Denise Daniels, communicating through a screen makes it more difficult for children to concentrate or show kindness to others. 【鼠标】Cathy cited Eileen Kenndy-Moore from line 16 to 17, as Eileen Kennedy-Moore, an authority on the subject, points out, online friends ‘fill holes real-life friends can’t.’
b. giving examples
The second method is giving examples. 【鼠标】Only Robert used this method. Form line 12 to 15. For example, instead of having proper conversations with their friends, some people are only concerned with their online popularity – how many likes did I get? How many followers do I have?
d. referring to common knowledge
after carefully reading, I noticed that neither of them applied using data as a method to support their arguments, so let’s move to the fourth one, referring to common knowledge. 【鼠标】 In Robert’s blog line 8 to 10, As we know, important social skill are developed through direct contact with other people. It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships. When we see the phrase ‘as we know’, we can clearly know that the writer is trying to refer to common knowledge. However, Cathy uses this method in another way, which isn’t very easy to find out. Have you found out how she uses that method? 【鼠标】Well, it is in her blog, line 12 – 14, nowadays, your friends are just a click away. Whenever someone needs help, friends from all over the world can immediately provide useful suggestions or information. She actually mentions real life situation to prove her arguments, in other words, this is another way of referring to common knowledge.
e. using comparison and contrast
The last one is using comparison and contrast. 【鼠标】 Only Cathy used this method from line 6 to 9. Traditional ways of communicating, like letters and phone calls, can be limiting and take time. However, you can share photos, videos, news stories and websites with your friends online. She compared traditional ways of communicating with what you can do with a friend online. we can clearly find out the advantage of keeping friendships online.
