(23-24九年级上·山东济南·期中)Do you know where the colors of your clothes come from? The answer is dye (染料). The clothes we wear these days are mainly dyed by machine. But in the past, people did this by hand.
Tie-dye (扎染) is an old way of dyeing in China. It is a kind of art with a history of more than 1,000 years. The dyes often come from plants. People use the natural plants to make the colors. They put the clothes in the colors and take them out after some time. Then they put the clothes in the sun. After that, the clothes become beautiful.
Nowadays tie-dye is very popular even among many young people. They like to wear tie-dye clothes. And many foreign friends like to buy tie-dye clothes as souvenirs. In 2006, the tie-dye skills were added to China’s national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list.
Anning in Yunnan is well-known for tie-dye. Yang Cheng, 52, is the inheritor (继承人) of tie-dye. He learned the skills from his mother in the 1980s. And he has passed it down to his daughter. He thought people should try their best to make tie-dye skills better. Yang Cheng has learned all the old skills of tie-dye. At the same time, he also tries to make some creative designs. Yang likes telling people about the history of tie-dye in Chinese culture. And he thinks that the old skills are very important. “The old skills are the roots of our culture,” he says. So now he teaches tie-dye skills in schools and other places. He wants more young people to learn about the old skills, and he also hopes that one day tie-dye will be part of fashion everywhere. He thinks it’s important to keep this traditional Chinese art alive. Some might worry that tie-dye will be replaced by machinery dyeing. But Yang is confident. “Machines can’t do what we do,” he says. “They can’t replace our creative hands.”

(23-24九年级上·江西宜秋·期中)When I was a boy, my family would sometimes get together at my great-aunt’s tiny house over the summer, Relatives from all over the country would come to visit. Then our family connection became deeper and we know we are all one and a big, beautiful family.

Although I tried my best to chase after my brothers and sisters, they were all too fast for me, I became more and more sad. 1 finally lunged at (扑向) one of my brothers and fell face down into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes.
Then I saw one of my cousins standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before, I easily caught her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing happily while she turned and started to chase one of my older brothers.

(23-24九年级上·江苏徐州·期中)I prefer to go slowly when I drive in the mountains of my home, because the forest scenery is beautiful no matter what the season is. This morning I was driving slower than usual because an early March snow had made the roads slippery. Going up a mountain road, I had to slow down as I rounded a sharp, snowy curve (转弯处). That was when I saw a strong and handsome male deer standing in the middle of the road. I came to a full stop and for a few seconds we just looked at each other. His eyes seemed wise and calm. Finally, he nodded his head at me. I nodded in return and waved with my hand for him to go on. He then jumped and ran across the road, up the hill, and back into the woods. I drove on smiling at the magic of this moment and thanked that I had been going slowly enough not to hit this beautiful creature.
Most of us rush through this life not knowing what we are missing. We hardly get to enjoy what each day brings us. Wouldn’t it be better to go slowly through our days here? Life is meant to be savored. Moments are meant to be valued. Days are meant to be lived in love and joy not flown through at a crazy speed.
The next time you find yourself going too fast, slow down. Take the time to watch the sunrise fill the world with light. Take the time to smile, laugh and sing. Take the time to read and relax. Take the time to live your life with love and delight in all the miracles each day brings you. If you do, your life will be much better and more beautiful. (23-24九年级上·河南漯河·期中)Andrew Bradford, the new kid in the neighborhood, didn’t get out much. All windows in his house were covered, and not a thing could be seen from outside.
One night, Isabel came to Nico’s bedroom when the moon was full.
“Andrew is outside.” she said. “He is climbing the old tree in his yard.”

(23-24九年级上·黑龙江鸡西·期中)I am 22. I used to work in a hotel. It was boring.
One day a guest and I had a conversation. She asked me, “Do you like your job?” I was sad because I knew the answer, “No.”
She was 74 and gave me the most beautiful advice that I remember in all my life: “You are too young to hate your job, young man. Go to get your passport and start your adventure (冒险).”
So I did.
Since I was a little kid, I was dreaming to know Europe. So the next day I had my pass-port. And one week later, my plane tickets.
It was impossible to have a long holiday. So I resigned (辞职). My boss said I was crazy. My friends said that I was not responsible (有责任心的). I just paid no attention to those voices.
It was Europe in winter. Not the best time to travel there. But Europe in winter is really cheap.
I packed some books, a camera, 4 shirts, 2 trousers, a coat, gloves, 2 pairs of walking shoes, candies and music for the journey.
I had little money. I just walked and walked. I went to high mountains and big cities. I saw some beautiful sunsets. I heard some of the best musicians (for free). I discovered that there was still love in the world. I realized that sunrises are not always blue or yellow. Some-times they mix.
I spent 22 days and $1,500 (including the plane tickets). What I did to save money:
1 Used CouchSurfing (沙发客).
2 Ate 20-cents bread.
3 Went to Burger King to get free potato chips and water.
4 Learned to cook.
5 Talked with local people. They always know where to do cool and cheap stuff (事儿).
6 Only went to free museums (only in England).
Until this point in my life, I never had a clear idea of how to deal with my life. Now I do. I want to be a photographer so that I can inspire (激励) people with my pictures. Thanks to this travel. Thanks to that lady.

(23-24九年级上·吉林长春·期中)When I was in the sixth grade, my teacher asked our class the question, “What does ‘doing the right thing’ mean to you?” She asked us to think about it over the weekend, and to talk to anyone else we thought might have a good answer. By Monday, we were asked to hand in an article on it, and be prepared to show our answers.
The whole weekend, I tried to come up with something that would impress (使留下深刻印象) my teacher and be easy to do. I talked to my parents, called my grandmother, and asked my next door neighbor. Everyone had good answers, but I didn’t feel like I could do them.
On Sunday afternoon my parents took me to my Aunt Cindy’s house. After dinner, my parents told me to play with my four-year-old cousin Andrea while they visited. I turned on the television and found a Disney movie for Andrea, and then I sat down and started to write my article. I still know what I was going to write about. Soon I felt a pair of eyes on me. It was Andrea.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“I have to write an article about what doing the right thing means to me.” I answered. Andrea laughed. “That’s easy,” she said.
“Okay, tell me the answer,” I said.
“Doing the right thing means: Be nice to your family and friends. Do what your mum says. Never lie. Take a bath when you’re dirty. Gain some knowledge and new abilities. Don’t waste water and electricity...”
I looked at Andrea amazingly. Not only had she answered a very difficult question for me, but I could easily follow all of her rules. And all I had to do was to be nice. So when I wrote my article back home, I included the story about Andrea.
Two weeks later, my teacher returned everyone’s articles. I received an A+ along with a little note my teacher had written: “Always do the right thing—and give Andrea an A+, too!”

(23-24九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)The hum of millions of locusts on the move is broken by the screams of farmers and the clanging (哇嘟声) of pots and pans. But their noise-making does little to stop the greedy insects from feasting on their crops.
Since the beginning of 2020, the East African country of Kenya has been fighting against the nation’s worst desert locust outbreak in over 70 years. The destructive (破坏性的) swarms, some as big as three times the size of New York City — about 192 billion insects — are eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal farms.
“These things are terrible,” says Keith Cressman, an official with the UN Food and American Organization (FAO).“A swarm the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined.”
Experts say the locusts are easy to control with pesticides. However, due to a delay of action and a lack of resources to battle such large numbers, the locust invasion (入侵) is still out of control. If efforts are not made in time to control the bugs, they could have grown to be 20 times their current number by March. That is the start of the planting season in Kenya. Even worse, experts believe that if control efforts fail, yet another generation of locusts, which bave a lifespan of between three to five months, could appear just in time for the September harvest season.
“Although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers and huge vacuums have been suggested in the past, these are not of use for locust control,”the FAO says.“People and birds often eat locusts. But that’s not enough to largely reduce the bug’s population levels.”
36.What are the farmers most probably doing with their pots and pans (in paragraph 1)?
A.They are driving the locusts away. B.They are cooking meals.
C.They are making music. D.They are holding a ceremony for a good harvest.
37.What does the example Keith Cressman used (in paragraph 3) show?
A.Locusts grow in number very quickly.
B.Manhattan is faced with a locust outbreak as well.
C.Large numbers of locusts are destructive to food resources.
D.People in New York and California have been eating too much food.
38.Which of the following statements are true?
①Locusts can’t be killed by pesticides.
②Locusts can live for three to five months.
③Kenya’s planting season starts in September.
④The later people start to control the locusts, the worse the situation will be.
A.①② B.①③ C.③④ D.②④
39.According to the article, why is the locust invasion still out of control?
①Because there have been too many locusts.
②Because the locust swarms move too quickly.
③Because Africans don’t know how to kill locusts.
④Because measures were not taken in time to deal with the locusts.
A.①② B.①④ C.②③ D.③④
40.What can we know about the FAO by looking at the end of the article?
A.It is encouraging more people to eat locusts.
B.It thinks locusts can be a main food source for people.
C.It has found an effective solution to the problem of the locust invasion.
D.It has been unable to work out a method to control the locusts up till now.

(23-24九年级上·广东韶关·期中)Chen Yuanchun is a teacher at a rural (乡村的) primary school m Cangyuan, Yunnan Province. The 44-year-old woman teaches Chinese, but she is very interested in computer technology. She has introduced coding (编程) to her students as an important information technology skill.
Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2018. She became one of the first teachers in Cangyaan to take training courses on coding. The training was challenging for a beginner like Chen. She needed to learn how to tell a machine to perform actions and finish tasks (任务) through different orders. She worked very hard because she believed this skill would be useful for her students.
After the training, Chen started a new group in her school to teach the students coding, but some parents opposed her plan. They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was teaching their children to play video games on the computer.
So, Chen could only teach students of her own class at first. For teens, coding does not include writing difficult coding languages. Instead, Chen taught them how to create interesting animations (动画片) and games.
After only one term, every student was able to create something through coding. Learning coding also helped them become more creative and improved their problem-solving skills.

(21-22九年级上·湖北恩施·期中)Last Sunday, I went to the post office to subscribe (订阅) some magazines. I was there for half an hour and there was still a long line in front of me.
My turn came at last. I quickly got everything done, and was about to leave. Just then, someone came nearer to me. I stopped and saw the old man with a dirty coat on him.
He told me he wanted to send some money home but he didn’t know how to fill in the table in the sheet. He asked me if I could help him.
“But you can ask the clerk.” After these few words, I looked away. “I have asked her. But I still don’t finish it. Would you kindly help me?”
Just then, my mobile phone rang. It was an excuse to refuse him. I had my own business to do. Hopelessly and sadly, he gave up begging me and tried to find someone else who would lend him a hand.

While I was jumping rope, my smartphone took a fall to the floor which created cracks (裂缝) on my screen. The music kept playing but I could see only one tenth of my screen while the rest was black. The next morning, I decided not to use it for 24 hours. I felt a sense of calm that day, which led to my not using it for one week. One week ended up becoming 60 days in total without my smartphone.
Let me tell you some of my feelings during the challenge.
To be honest, I became bored at first without my phone, but my mind went through all kinds of topics. Boredom is a perfect way to create new ideas on a business or project. When you are bored, you make your mind relax to reach all possibilities (可能性).
I also read a survey showing that adults checked their smartphones 85 times a day, or once every 10 minutes. As I learned in my challenge, by not having my smartphone, I fell into deep work more easily, so I completed my tasks in a shorter time.
What’s more, without my phone, I avoided reading negative (负面的) news and opinions. That helped make a big improvement in my mental health, the biggest reason for it was truly communicating with people. It brought me more connections with humans in the real world. I went to more dinners with friends and asked more questions to strangers.

(23-24九年级上·甘肃武威·期中)Jim Davidson said reading played a “very, very important role” in his children’s lives as they were growing up. During his twenty years as a writer, the father of four became worried about illiteracy (文盲) in America and decided to do something about it.
Davidson started “Bookcase for Every Child” project (项目) in his hometown of Conway, Arkansas, USA in 2005. The project provides low-income (低收入的) children with bookcases, and a starter set of books to encourage reading.
Davidson’s project is different from other projects. Instead of raising money from the public, he gets many people personally to take part in the project.
“We decided to build 50 bookcases each year and give them to low-income children,” said Davidson. “I can promise you this is the nicest piece of furniture (家具) in most of these low-income children’s homes.”
Today, the project has spread to eight communities (社区) in five states. He said the project’s early success belonged to the community members. “I knew a lot of people all over the community and was able to choose a group of people to do the job,” said Davidson. The group included members such as librarians and a workman.

Wang trained very hard for many years to become an astronaut. The hardest part was desert (沙漠) training. Wearing a spacesuit and carrying heavy equipment, she walked several kilometers through the hot and sandy desert. “Sometimes it was so windy and dusty,” she says, “that we couldn’t see each other even though we were just a few meters away.”
Wang loves her job. She remembers watching the first Chinese astronaut go into space. “I was so proud and also very excited. But as I watched it, it came to my mind: we have male pilots (飞行员) and female pilots. And then a male astronaut. When will there be a female astronaut? And today, it’s me becoming one of the first few.”

Being a snake researcher allows Takacs to travel to many beautiful and far away places. But it is also dangerous. He has been bitten by venom snakes six times, but has learned to be careful. “Explorers (探险者) have to know their limits,” he says. “Then we can push those limits further.”

Davidson’s love for the project grew deeper after his wife died in May, 2013. For him, spreading the bookcase project all over the country is the best way to remember her. And he hopes to have at least one project in every state in his country.
