Organic farms use no manmade chemicals to increase crops or control insects and disease. The study showed that organic fields produced fewer crops, on average, than other fields. However, the scientists say the organic methods improved the health of the soil and used half as much energy. The Swiss scientists compared the effects of organic and traditional farming methods over a period of more than twenty years. They grew crops on four fields of land in Switzerland. Two fields were grown using traditional farming methods. The others were grown using organic farming methods. The crops and soil use were similar in all the fields studied. The study found that the organic fields produced about 20% fewer crops than the other fields. However, the farmers used less fertilizer and energy on the organic fields. They found the organic fields were healthier. The scientists say the organic fields had more nutrients in the soil. The soils in the organic fields also had more biological activity than the other fields. The organic fields had more helpful organisms and a larger number of different organisms. The organic fields had almost two times as many insects, including helpful insects. In traditional farming, chemicals designed to kill harmful insects also kill helpful ones. The researchers say the findings show that organic crop production rates change little over time, and that soil fertility increases. They say the finds suggest that organic farmers can help the environment by increasing soil fertility. Organic farming is becoming increasingly popular in some countries. Many people believe that eating organic food is more healthful than eating food grown with chemicals. Some people are willing to pay more money to buy organic food. 1.What does the study show about the organic methods? A.They have more output than other fields. B.They benefit the health of the human and the soil. C.They use more energy than traditional ones. D.They can control diseases without using any chemicals. 根据第一段最后一句“However, the scientists say the organic methods improved the health of the soil and used half as much energy.(然而,科学家说有机方法改善了土壤的健康,并且只消耗了一半的能源。)”和第三段最后一句“They found the organic fields were healthier.(他们发现有机农田里的庄稼更健康。)” B。 2.In what way do the researchers carry out the experiment? A.Selecting the best seeds. B.Using the latest technology. C.Applying different methods. D.Planting crops in special soils. 根据第二段第二至四句“They grew crops on four fields of land in Switzerland. Two fields were grown using traditional farming methods. The others were grown using organic farming methods.(他们在瑞士的四块土地上种庄稼。用传统的耕作方法种植了两块地。其他两块用有机耕作法种植的。)”可知,科学家们实施实验是通过使用不同的耕作方法,再进行比较来得出结果的。故选C。 3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning organic fields? A.Its strengths. B.Its products. C.Its application. D.Its shortage. 根据第四段第一、二句“The scientists say ... had more biological activity than the other fields.(科学家说有机土壤中的养分更多。有机田土壤的生物活性也高于其他田。)”可知,本段主要谈论了有机土壤的优点。故选A。 4.What can we infer from the text? A.No insects exist in organic fields. B.Organic farming is environmentfriendly. C.People can't afford organic food at present. D.Organic crop production rate increases rapidly. 根据倒数第二段最后一句“They say the finds suggest that organic farmers can help the environment by increasing soil fertility.(他们说,这些发现表明,有机种植者可以通过提高土壤肥力来改善环境。)” 1.demonstrate v. 肥沃,富饶 be willing to ... B Movies about the future often show people travelling around in flying cars. Last Tuesday, that vision came a step closer to reality for a Japanese company called SkyDrive, as it showed off its new flying car, the SD03, in action. The small car flew around for four minutes, staying about 1-2 meters off the ground. The SD03 is powered by batteries and has 8 motors, which lift it straight off the ground. What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board. Toraohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, said, “Of the world's over 100 flying car projects, only a handful have succeeded with a person on board.” Many groups worldwide are working to develop flying cars. Some governments, including Japan's, are supporting the idea, hoping that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxi rides in cities. Flying cars could also help reach places that can't be reached by road. What happens when a motor fails? If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just people in the car, but people on the ground, too. That's why the SD03 has eight motors—as backups. Some people believe flying cars reduce traffic jams. But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air. With many cars flying around, these systems would be too complicated to be managed in real time by humans. Besides, flying cars are expensive. When it's ready, SkyDrive's flying car is expected to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000. However, people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced challenges at first, too. With time, many of the big problems were solved. By 2050, Mr Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. “I think flying cars will become normal in the near future.” he says. 5.What was special about this test flight? A.The car flew higher. B.The car was cheap. C.The car flew on its own. D.The car carried a driver. 根据第二段第二句“What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board.” D。 6.Why is the SD03 equipped with eight motors? A.To ensure its safety. B.To increase its flying speed. C.To make it look cool. D.To enable it to carry more weight. 根据第四段第二、三句“If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just people in the car, but people on the ground, too. That's why the SD03 has eight motors—as backups.(如果飞行的汽车穿过城市,事故不仅会伤害车里的人,还会伤害地面上的人。这就是为什么SD03有8个引擎作为备份。)”可知,SD03有8个引擎是为了保障它的安全。故选A。 7.Which aspect of the flying cars is mainly discussed in Paragraph 5? A.Their design. B.Their application. C.Their cost. D.Their disadvantages. 根据第五段中的“But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air.”及“Besides, flying cars are expensive.” D。 8.What is Mr Fukuzawa's opinion about flying cars? A.They can be easily bought. B.They have a long way to go. C.They have a promising future. D.They are environmentally friendly. 根据最后一段中的“By 2050, Mr Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. ‘I think flying cars will become normal in the near future.’ he says.” 1.vision n. A Fun Friend for Everyone Is your idea of a perfect pet one that is soft, furry and loving? How about one that is easy to care for and won't make a mess? 1 A robopet, short for robotic pet, is not a real animal, but it looks like one. It's also often covered in soft fur. 2 The fake fur on robopets is harmless to anyone. These batterypowered pets can do many things that a real pet can do. They bark or pure, play games and more! 3 Robots are limited in what they can be programmed to do. But this technology is improving. Soon, it may be difficult to tell the difference between a robopet and the real thing. Older people are especially fond of robopets. They may not have the energy or mobility to care for a real pet. Older people may also have memory loss and can forget to care for a real pet. Or they may not be able to afford the food and medicine that animals need. But robopets don't require such care and can be a fun presence in someone's life. 4 Robopets are popular with children, too. For children who are scared of real dogs or cats, robopets can also gradually help them face their fears. And if kids want to go beyond the typical dogs and cats, they can choose something more imaginative. 5 Caring for a robopet can be a good way to learn responsibility. A.But don't worry if real cats or dogs make you sneeze. B.In short, they make a loving companion for people of all ages. C.You can have both with a robopet! D.Robotic toy leopards, dinosaurs and more are also possibilities. E.Whichever robopet you choose, you will have a fun friend. F.Robopets give them the opportunity to enjoy a pet without any of the responsibilities. G.Of course, robots can't totally take the place of animals. 1.C 根据设空前“Is your idea of a perfect pet one that is soft, furry and loving? How about one that is easy to care for and won't make a mess?(你认为的完美宠物是一个柔软的、毛茸茸的、可爱的宠物吗?又或者是一个很容易照顾,不会搞成一团糟的宠物?)”可知,设空处起到承接上文的作用,C项(一个机器宠物会让你两者兼得。)符合语境,故选C。 2.A 根据设空前“A robopet, short for robotic pet, is not a real animal, but it looks like one. It's also often covered in soft fur.(机器宠物,是机器人宠物的缩写,并不是真正的动物,但它看起来像真的。它还经常覆盖着柔软的皮毛。)”和设空后“The fake fur on robopets is harmless to anyone.(机器宠物身上的假皮毛对任何人都无害。)” 根据设空后“Robots are limited in what they can be programmed to do.(机器人能够被编程来做的事情是有限的。)” 5.D 根据设空前“And if kids want to go beyond the typical dogs and cats, they can choose something more imaginative.(如果孩子们想要平常典型的狗和猫之外的宠物,他们也能够选择一些更有想象力的东西。)”
