At Bright’s Zoo in the US, there is a very unusual baby giraffe. What makes this giraffe special? It doesn’t have any spots (斑点) at all.
Giraffes are famous for their spots. But this baby giraffe born at Bright’s Zoo has no spots at all. Instead, its fur (皮毛) is light brown. It was born perfectly healthy.
David Bright who runs the zoo, said, the young female giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world.
Giraffes are born quite large. This one isn’t quite a year old, but she’s already about 2 meters tall. A giraffe’s spots appear when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means this giraffe will never have spots.
To name the giraffe, Mr. Bright’s family came up with four possible choices for a name. All of the names are in Swahili, a language spoken in parts of Africa. The zoo also asked people to vote (投票), along with what they mean in English: Kipekee—“unique”; Firyali—“unusual”; Shakiri—“she is the most beautiful”; and Jamella—“one of the great beauties”. Finally, Kipekee was chosen.

When Wang Haiyan was 13, she started learning to make shadow puppets (皮影) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of theater that uses puppets (木偶) made from leather (皮) or paper, performed with music and singing. It tells us about traditional stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving (雕刻), and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said.
“You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.”
It took Wang three years to learn this skill. She used a stone to make her left hand stronger while practicing. It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complicated (复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
College student Huang Meiqi, 22, visited Wang’s studio in 2020 in an activity organized by the art platform LOFTER. She leaned to carve and perform with shadow puppets there. Encouraged by this, Huang made a lamp (灯) that looks like shadow puppets. She put 3-D printed shadow puppets on the lamp cover. When the lamp is turned on, you can see the shadows of the puppets.

After only a few minutes of walking down the road from where her house was, Dorothy and Toto found the yellow-brick road that the Witch (巫婆) of the North had spoken about.
“Well, Toto, here we go!” said Dorothy.
For hours they passed through a beautiful forest, but then the land opened up on both sides of the yellow-brick road, and they were walking through farmland. With no trees now, the sunlight shined down on them, and made them hot and tired. So she stopped to sit on the grass.
Corn was growing along the road there, and a scarecrow (稻草人) was there to keep the crow (乌鸦) away. Dorothy looked at the scarecrow for some time.
“I must be too exhausted. Toto,” she said. “I thought that I saw the Scarecrow smile at me.”
“That’s because I did smile,” said the scarecrow.
“You can talk?” said Dorothy, amazed.
“Yes,” he answered. “Could you help me down from here? It’s very hot today, and I’m tired of working.”
Dorothy then helped him down from the stick he was hanging from, and put him on the grass.
“Thank you very much, little girl,” he said. “What brings you here?”
“I am going to Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz. My home is very far away, and I was told he could help me get back there.”
“He can do that?” asked the scarecrow.
“I don’t know. I was told that he can do many great things.”
“Do you think that he could give me a brain? I only have straw in my head now, and I can’t think very well. I have always wanted a brain.”
“He might be able to help,” answered Dorothy. “You are welcomed to come with me, and when we get there, I can ask the Wizard to help you.”
“Really? You will do that for me?”

①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical (垂直的) Take-Off and Landing vehicle (车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “it would never be crowded again, because the sky is very,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy (能源).” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come? There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most of them need long runways to take off and land. Flying straight up and down like a helicopter (直升机) makes it easy. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be difficult, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think? Would you enjoy riding to school or visiting a friend in a self-flying taxi? Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future?
36. What is Sebastian Thrun’s attitude (态度) about the future of flying cars?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Angry. D. Surprised.
37. Why are some companies developing cars as air taxis?
A. To make them faster.
B. To make them greener.
C. To make them cheaper.
D. To make them safer.
38. What can we learn from the passage?
A Flying cars have been used widely so far.
B. Flying cars cannot work without pilots.
C. eVTOLs still need special place to take off.
D. eVTOLs can solve safety problems.
39. What is the possible structure of the passage? (①=Para. 1 ②=Para. 2…. )
A. B. C. D.
【答案】36. B 37. C 38. C 39. C

David Bright, who runs the zoo, said, the young female giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world.
24. In which country was the spotless giraffe born?
A. Japan. B. The US. C. South Africa. D. India.

“He might be able to help,” answered Dorothy. “You are welcomed to come with me, and when we get there, I can ask the Wizard to help you.”
