Closer to modern times, someone ❷who is remembered for his ability to combine humour with more serious messages is American writer, Mark Twain. Twain's particular style of writing is funny and often mischievous②.For example, in his classic novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, he famously says, “Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.” But he is equally well known for his witty③ remarks in his everyday interactions④ with people. For instance, while on a lecturing tour of the United States, Twain went into a barber's shop to get a haircut and a shave⑤.The barber, not recognising him, asked if he had a ticket to the lecture. When Twain replied that he didn't, the barber told him that if he wanted to go to the event he would have to stand, as there were no seats left in the theatre.Twain's response was, “That's just my luck.I always have to stand when that fellow lectures!” 剃(须);刮去(毛发) 【亮句应用】 ❶while引导的让步状语从句 (2023·北京)While you are able to pick up a new habit in a few weeks, it takes many months to build a healthy habit. ❷who引导的定语从句 (2024·1月浙江续写)And with each step she took, she left behind a legacy of inspiration for those who followed in her footsteps, knowing that even without a clear sense of direction, there's always a way to find one's way. [教材原文] Story A A famous art collector was walking through the city when he noticed a dirty cat lapping①milk from a saucer② in the doorway③ of a store.[1] He did a double take④. [1]画线部分属于“Sb was doing sth when…” He noticed that the saucer was an antique⑤ and very valuable, so he walked casually⑥ into the store and innocently⑦ offered to buy the cat for 20 dollars. The store owner replied, “I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale⑧.” The collector said, “Please, I need a hungry cat with a good appetite⑨ around the house to catch mice. I'll pay you 200 dollars for that cat.” The owner said “sold” and handed over⑩ the cat. The collector continued, “Hey, for the 200 dollars I wonder if you could throw in⑪ that old saucer[2]. The cat's used to it and it'll save me from having to get a dish.” [2]“I wonder if you could…” And the owner said, “Sorry my friend, but that's my lucky saucer. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retired for the night⑬, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes woke up and asked his faithful⑭ friend, “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” “I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes,” replied Watson. “And what do you deduce from⑮ that?” Watson thought for a minute. “Well, according to the studies on astronomy⑯, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies⑰ and potentially⑱ billions of planets. According to the positions of the stars, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. According to the scientific measurement⑲ of time, I deduce that the time is probably a quarter past three. According to the current atmosphere⑳, I forecast that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. He had had problems at work and his wife had left him for another man. So, after he had been feeling depressed for over a month, he decided to go to the doctor. He had to wait for what seemed like ages in the doctor's surgery [4]. The bleeding man next to him was looking at his watch nervously; a woman was coughing and sneezing badly; and a baby was screaming. Finally, after he had been waiting for about half an hour, he was called in for his consultation. The doctor was writing a note at her desk when he came in.“Sorry, I'm just finishing something. I'm afraid we've been very busy this morning.” She then turned to the man. “So, what's the problem?” she asked. “Well, I've been having a bit of a crisis, you know, lots of problems,” replied the man. “And I've been doing a lot of work.” “Mmm, you're looking very pale.” The doctor started to examine him. “Well, everything is working OK,” she announced afterwards. “You have slightly high blood pressure and you're breathing quite heavily, but otherwise everything's fine.” “So what can I do?” asked the man. “I'm going on a trip soon. I will be working in the United States for three months. This time next week, I'll be arriving in New York.” The doctor thought for a while. “I think what you need is a good laugh. That would do you a lot of good. A circus is performing in town. Why don't you go to see it? I hear there's an amazing clown who'll really make you laugh. His name's Grock.” “I am Grock,” replied the man sadly. middle-aged adj. down adj. 流血,出血 bleed to death失血而亡 [拓展] blood n.[U]血 give blood 献血 sneeze/sniːz/vi.打喷嚏 n.[C]喷嚏 scream/skriːm/vi. 咨询;请教 consultant n.[C]会诊医师;顾问 a bit of a…(谈及负面事情时用)有点儿 crisis/ˈkraIsIs/n.[C,U]危机;危难时刻 financial crisis 经济危机 in crisis 处于危机之中 pale/peIl/adj.(人、面孔等)苍白的;白皙的 examine/IɡˈzæmIn/vt. Step One Fast reading Ⅰ.Read the passage and then fill in the blanks.
