Laughter is more like an animal call than it is like speech—but it's also one of our most important forms of communication.
In this talk, Sophie Scott will explore the natural history and neuroscience(神经学) of laughter, stressing its role in social contact and play, as well as its role in emotional expressions and communication. She will set out what we know about the neural basis of laughter awareness and production, and a little of what we know about laughter and humour.Sophie will also present some of the reasons why so few people study laughter scientifically.
Sophie has pioneered the study of the human voice as a social signal, and she has recently started to look for the ways that nonverbal emotional expressions like laughter are used socially. At night, she wants to turn theory into practice in the talk show.

My mother is now 90.Thankfully, she is blessed with good health.
I still remember ten years ago when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.
One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone.Because she had never been.Of course, that was ridiculous. There was no way my brother and I could allow that.A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us.Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone, after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days.He took her to all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship them to Canada. They would be arriving in three or four weeks. My mother beamed(眉开眼笑) as she told this story. The blanket seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived in Canada. He called our mother to inform her he was in Ottawa.
“I invited him over and he came by for a cup of tea.We drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her trip of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realization that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption:“Get busy living or get busy dying.”

Zhang Ying, 23, could have been a news host after four years studying broadcasting and talk show hosting at the university. So could Du Xintong.Instead of just becoming talking heads on TV, they decided to use their knowledge to help millions of children with speech disorders to find their own voices. They co-founded Voice Changer, which offers language rehabilitation(复原) for teenagers in China through online and in-person service platforms.
According to Zhang, each child needs to finish at least one three-month course, which consists of three 40-minute sessions a week. The length of the overall training program is dependent on each child's condition upon their evaluation.
“When we are teaching in-person courses, the parents cannot accompany their children. The children may feel a bit nervous in a strange environment, but they soon get used to it and start to enjoy the training,” she says.
They also launched a mini-program on WeChat that provides online services for families of children with speech disorders—parents can upload their child's information and recordings to the self-testing tool and get a report. As well as online speech therapy(治疗), there are also online courses for parents, including guidance for speech therapy at home.
“We insist that parents should accompany their children when taking online courses as they need to play the role of both teaching assistants and deskmates,” she says.
There are only 10,000 speech therapists in China, many of whom are not full-time.Unlike common volunteer work, to be a speech therapist volunteer, complex training is required before services can be offered.
“Speech therapy is a complex subject which requires knowledge, including training in education, psychology, linguistics and so on,” Zhang says, adding that their team has developed a training system for the volunteers to grow into professional speech therapists. They prefer to employ college students majoring in related subjects, such as broadcasting, linguistics, Chinese languages and literature or special education.

As for us students, doing voluntary work is an effective way to participate in social activities. In other words, it gives us the chances to prepare to fit into the society in advance.
Through voluntary work, the living conditions of people in need are improved. For example, lots of children in remote areas don't have access to enough food and clothes, let alone education. Some people donate money and clothes while some volunteers go to these areas to teach these children, bringing them knowledge as well as the latest information of the world. In this way, these children's qualities of life are improved and they'll integrate into the society more easily and get a sense of belonging.
The more voluntary work we do, the more steady and harmonious our society will be.Volunteers spread warmth and care all over the world, strengthening union and trust among citizens. As Ban Ki-moon once said, “Volunteerism is a source of community strength. It can bring positive social change by promoting respect for diversity, equality and the participation of all.”

Dear friends,
As we all know, bad eating habits are still very common among us students. Some like to have snacks and some are particular about food. All these bad habits will surely do harm to our health.
To keep fit, we should have various healthy diets, which generally include fish, meat, vegetables, fruit as well as main courses.Besides, we'd better have meals regularly. In my opinion, we should develop healthy eating habits which are significant to build ourselves up.Only in this way can we have enough energy to study better.
That's all.Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen.Because we had just moved into the neighbourhood, I couldn't imagine who it would be.Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.
“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard.Would you like some of those, too?”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I'll get my money.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello.Would you like to come in for some tea?” Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie.”
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea.It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. “What is your name?Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away.He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables.Ours was the only door opened to him that day.
注意:续写的词数应为150左右。
One possible version:
When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day.My daughter excitedly waited for his next visit and made full preparations. As the old man visited us the next day, he was amazed by all of the preparations for him, including apple pies. His eyes were filled with tears. We became friends and I and my daughter enjoyed the company the old visitor offered us.But before long, he had to move to live with his daughter and we hadn't seen him ever since.
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home—a letter from the old man's daughter. She informed us that our dear old friend had passed away and sent us another letter written by the old man, which said, “Thank you for all your kindnesses to an old man. When I was lonely, you took me in.When I was badly in need of a family, you accepted me.My last few years are filled with happiness because of you.”
