I need to arrive at work at 6 am, which means I have to leave my house at 5 am. Yes, it is quite difficult to wake up at 4 am. Our firm arranges for cab drivers to pick up employees from their homes before 5:30 am. But since we don’t have consistent cabs, the drivers end up having to roam around to pick up the fifteen people.
An employee comes to the office early regularly. He usually gets picked up first by the drivers. So he happens to know the addresses of most of the employees. He usually helps the drivers pick up the rest employees. He patiently directs the cab drivers while also calling each employee to inform them the cab is a few minutes away from their home.
Yesterday, I was wondering how this person can do this every day, without complaint, even though it’s neither part of his job, nor giving him any added advantage. I thought: “This is a person who definitely deserves a thank-you note.” So I just wrote a card to him yesterday evening, telling him that he has a great attitude and that all the employees really appreciate his act of service. Then, I put the note in an envelope, along with some chocolates.
Today, when I was supposed to hand my envelope to him, I felt a rush of fear and confusion pass over me. Maybe it was because I had never spoken to him or I was uncertain about how he would react — whether he would doubt my intention. However, when he was getting out of the cab, I thought: “I know my intention is good, and that’s the reason why I should give it to him. What he thinks of it is his own decision. I should do what I feel is right.” So I handed the envelope to him. And now, I feel happy! Maybe I made someone’s day today.
51.What do the underlined words “roam around” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? (no more than 3 words)
52.How does the employee do for the cab drivers and other employees? (no more than 15 words)
53.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us? (no more than 10 words)

I’ve always been creative since I was a little girl. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts (手工) and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation.
Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance company out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change.
One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up.
As I dreamt bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness.
As it became clearer that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance company became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfilment (满足感).
I knew I needed to make a bigger change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a difficult decision—leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma.
The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love. Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand.
Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today.

A man in black clothes jumps high into the air. Before he lands, he strikes a pose. Sometimes, he carries a red fan. With long white sleeves(袖子), he spreads his arms like wings. His dance is eye-catching, often attracting crowds.
He is Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong. Since 2020, he’s made short videos of himself dancing in London. He has performed at the city’s parks and iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge. The 35-year-old has nearly 5 million sfollowers on Douyin, where he shares his videos.
Classical Chinese dance combines martial arts movements with those of traditional Chinese opera. He started to learn it at 12. “I was attracted by the dancers who play ancient heroes through the movements of classical Chinese dance,” said Ma.
Later, Ma studied at the Beijing Dance Academy. Since 2019, he has been teaching classical Chinese dance at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Two years ago, Ma had to give online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his small home, he could only make small moves. One day, he took his wife’s suggestion and danced at Greenwich Park, a popular tourist spot. She recorded Ma. He then edited the video, added music and sent it to friends. “Surprisingly, they loved it, which inspired me to share it online,” said Ma.
Later, Ma made more short videos. He combines his dance moves with dazzling action. People are often curious about his performances. So, while dancing, he likes to interact with them. As his videos went viral, he received messages from people around the world.

Teamwork is an important part of the health and fitness program at Spirit Club, where most of the participants have disabilities.
Jared Ciner created the program two years ago, “Our main focus is the same thing as any other gym’s, which is to help people be active and healthy, but the difference is that we do change a little bit to make sure that it is right pace for the people we are working with, so that everybody can follow along.”
Ciner used to work as a director for a local organization aimed at helping people with disabilities and as apart-time personal trainer at gyms. “I noticed that many of the people who I was working with who had disabilities did not exercise, struggled with weight problems, and were looking for more physical methods and more social ways,” he said.
His volunteer experience in Ethiopia working with children from very poor families helped him understand the influence of organized physical activity, too. “That helped me realize how much organized physical activity can help people connect to each other and increase people’s self-esteem (自尊),” Ciner said.
Classes at Spirit Club are interactive, and students can come with parents. They participate in partnered workouts and learn balance, strength, speed and agility (灵活性). They are also encouraged to eat right.
Alan Bradshaw, who is mentally disabled, has been coming to classes for two years. “He recently lost 21 pounds,” said his mother. “He is more outgoing. When he first started, he couldn’t sit on the floor, get down on the floor. He is doing that now. Great changes have happened to him and it is an important step forward for him. He likes the gym because he can make friends easily and exercise at the same time,” she said.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.
I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.
We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.

I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house as I always did when I heard the piano. Before ringing the bell, I stood against the wall and sighed sadly. I daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt it my duty to try.
The door opened. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me. With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned (皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “Jennifer, what are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.
“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play.
“See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’ horse sees her plight (困境) and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. Luckily, they make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.
I was delighted and advised to try another one. Pasha smiled and together we played many pieces of music that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.
56.Why did the author sigh sadly? (no more than 15 words)
57.How did Pasha inspire the author to play the piano? (no more than 8 words)

I recently returned from a language study trip to Seoul, Korea, where I had a great time but also experienced some culture shock. Luckily, I had learned about the three phases (阶段) of culture shock before. More importantly, I had learned that they would pass.
Phase one of culture shock is excitement at being in a new and different place. Nothing is boring; everything is interesting every day. I found in Seoul how interesting it is to be in a foreign country, where almost everyone looked different from me and people spoke a different language, how fun it is to have the chance to practice the language in stores and restaurants, and how great it is to order delicious Korean food for a reasonable price and pay no tip!
Then, phase two sets in. That’s when the excitement wears off, and you begin to feel the frustrations (挫折) of living in a foreign culture. I could speak to people in short phrases and sentences, comment on the weather, or get simple directions. But I couldn’t really talk. I had a hard time finding what I needed. Besides, Korean food became dull to me after a while.
I began to find ways to deal with my issues, which is the third phase of culture shock. I found things I liked, things in the foreign culture that made life pleasant. I loved the baths in Korea—so relaxing. So I went to the Dragon Hill Spa in Seoul. I became a frequent visitor to a nice coffee shop. I went to see the palace with a Secret Garden, which sounded attractive. I did not, however, go to all the palaces, temples or museums. That would have been boring for me.
The other part of Phase 3 is acceptance. I wanted to bury myself in Korean culture, but I did not love everything. I had to accept that reality. Knowing what I didn’t like, then accepting it, made me enjoy more what I did like.
50.Why did the author go to Korea? (no more than 5 words)
51.What does the underlined words in Paragraph 3 probably mean? (1 word)
52.Why was the author frustrated in Korea? (no more than 10 words)
53.How did the author get to enjoy his life in Korea? (no more than 10 words)
54.Would you like to study abroad? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)

Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family. “Mum and Dad made all our furniture,” she said. “Not because we couldn't afford it: they just liked making things.
When Daniella visited a design exhibition with her class at the age of ten, she realised she wanted to follow her parents’ example. Since that day, she’s been making furniture. “I’ve learnt by helping Mum and Dad, and through watching videos online.
Her first piece was a table, made soon after visiting the exhibition, and similar to one she’d seen there. “They had furniture from the last hundred years, and I copied a 1920s design.” said Daniella. “Unluckily, no one has wanted tables like that. But I was very chuffed because of the good quality of my table.”
Daniella started selling her furniture at a local market. “This gave me the chance to find out what people thought about my designs. But finally, I had to give up because the market closed down,” said Daniella. “After that, I started an internet business and it was doing so well.”
Recently, Daniella was asked to take part in a local design show. “One of the organisers had bought one of my pieces off the internet. I couldn't believe it when she told me there'd be a thousand visitors.” she said. “I had little idea what visitors would think about it. My furniture is quite different—mine is more traditional,” Daniella said. But Daniella received lots of orders at the show and the future is looking bright for this young design star.

When parents talk about school safety these days, they’re usually referring to the increase in violence at schools. But research shows that school-age children are actually nine times more likely to suffer an injury while doing sports than to be the victim of violence while at school. Accidents can be prevented if parents are on the lookout for potential dangers. To help you keep your kids free from harm, here are some safety tips:
*Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers. Remember, a stranger is anyone you or your child doesn’t know well or trust.
*Be sure that your child walks to and from school with a sibling, friend or neighbor.
*Teach your kid, whether walking, biking or riding a bus to school, to obey all traffic signals, signs and traffic officers. Remind him to be extra careful in bad weather.
*When driving your kid, deliver and pick them up as close to the school as possible. Don’t leave until they are in the schoolyard or building.
*If your child rides a bike to school, make sure he wears a standard helmet. Research shows that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85%.
*Teach your kid to arrive at the bus stop earlier, stay off the street, and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.
*Be sure that your kid knows his or her home phone number and address, your work number, the number of another trusted adult and how to call for emergencies.
46.Who do you think the passage is written to? (no more than 2 words)
47.Please explain the word “potential” in English. (no more than 3 words)

Why not take a more measured approach to a happier, healthier you? From your office to your bedroom to your car, these small changes can have a big impact on your life.
Wake up ten minutes earlier. When you start your morning in a hurry, you set a stressful tone for the day. (I’m speaking from experience here.) Even ten extra minutes in the morning can help you feel more calm, collected, and ready to face the day.
Spend five minutes in silence or meditation (冥想). You’ll soon realize, whether it’s in the morning or evening, that five minutes of sitting quietly with your eyes closed feels a lot longer than five minutes. But just this short silence can foster a quietness that carries through the day. When things go off the rails, simply close your eyes and recall that earlier quietness.
Walk. Is there one trip you’d normally make in the car (to work, the gym, the store) that you can make on foot? Walking saves money (good for you) and gas (good for the environment) and burns calories (around 2,000 steps equal one mile), which is good for your health.
Tell someone you love them. Life is never long enough to say this as many times as it should be said. Whether your mother, a friend, a significant other, or your dog, make it a habit to tell someone at least once a day that you love him or her. While it may feel strange at first, you will never regret it.
Stand (or sit) up straight. Good posture prevents back and neck pain and even build confidence. When driving, tilt (倾斜) your rearview mirror (后视镜) up a bit. You’ll have to sit up to see. At your desk, the top of your computer screen should be at eye level. Put a small cushion in the curve of your lower back, and your spine (脊柱) will become straight.
56.What does the text mainly talk about? (No more than 10 words)
57.Why is getting up ten minutes earlier in the morning suggested? (No more than 18 words)
58.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “foster” in paragraph 3? (No more than 2 words)
59.What benefit can you get from good posture? (No more than 15 words)
60.Do you like going to school on foot? Why or why not? (No more than 25 words)

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School.
During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even though it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationary was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.

I had many experiences studying in groups. But the most impressive experience for me was an English singing competition.
Last term, we had to sing an English song in groups in the singing competition. The song our team chose was Try Everything.
Although most of the team members quickly learned the melody (曲调), there were still a few students who couldn’t sing it or were too shy to sing it in public. So, we taught those who couldn’t sing and encouraged those who were very shy. Finally, we sang it really well and got first prize.
From this experience, I realized that studying in groups has a lot of superiority. Everyone has advantages and disadvantages. When we work in teams, we can learn from each other and fill in teaming gaps. Also, it’s easy to give up when studying alone. And with each other’s encouragement. We’ll be more likely to be able to persist. What’s more, when we discuss in groups, we can learn how to communicate with others and achieve the team goals together.
Just as the saying goes, “Alone we can run faster, but together we can go further?” So, let’s enjoy group study!
51.Which experience made the author feel it memorable in group learning? (no more than 5 words)

54.How did the author feel when thinking of handing the envelope to the employee? (no more than 5 words)
55.What message is carried in the passage? (no more than 25 words)
【答案】51.Travel around/Drive around. 52.The employee directs and informs them the address of each one. 53.Why that employee deserves a thank-you note. 54.He felt worried and confused. 55.Do what you feel is right and ignore others’ reaction because what they think of it is their own decision.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者感谢他们公司第一个被接的员工的故事。
51.考查词句猜测。根据第一段的“pick up the fifteen people(接这15个人)”可知,司机要接15个人,所以要开车到处转,roam around的意思是“四处闲逛”,和travel around/drive around意思相近,故答案为Travel around/Drive around.
52.考查细节理解。根据第二段“So he happens to know the addresses of most of the employees. He usually helps the drivers pick up the rest employees. He patiently directs the cab drivers while also calling each employee to inform them the cab is a few minutes away from their home.(所以他碰巧知道大多数员工的地址。他通常会帮助司机接其他员工。他耐心地指导出租车司机,同时给每一位员工打电话,告诉他们出租车离他们家只有几分钟的路程。)”可知,该员工指导并告知他们每个人的地址。故答案为The employee directs and informs them the address of each one.
53.考查主旨大意。根据第三段“Yesterday, I was wondering how this person can do this every day, without complaint, even though it’s neither part of his job, nor giving him any added advantage.(昨天,我想知道这个人是如何做到每天都这样,没有抱怨,即使这不是他的工作的一部分,也没有给他任何额外的利益。)”可知,第三段主要告诉我们为什么那个员工值得写一封感谢信。故答案为Why that employee deserves a thank-you note.

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
58.What made the music change in Pasha’s playing? (no more than 10 words)
59.Please explain the meaning of the underlined sentence. (no more than 15 words)
60.What do you think of Pasha? Why? (no more than 25 words)
【答案】56.Because she failed to learn music well though Mrs. Windsor had taught him for free. 57.By telling stories while playing the piano. 58.The development of the plot. 59.The author acknowledged that when playing the piano she only moved figures automatically without thinking. 60.Pasha is not only a friendly girl but a great and intelligent piano player.Because she helped the author learn piano in an effective way.
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者在新朋友的帮助下如何学习钢琴的故事。
56.考查细节理解。根据文章第一段“I daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt it my duty to try.(我幻想着我宁愿做什么。我接受了足够的辅导让我能够阅读、理解,甚至写一些音乐作品,但我没有天赋。但是温莎太太主动提出免费给我上课,所以我觉得我有责任去尝试)”可知,Windsor太太好心给她授课、学习音乐,但是作者一直学不好,这就是她难过的原因,所以当要去Windsor太太家时,她难过地叹气。故答案为Because she failed to learn music well though Mrs. Windsor had taught him for free.
57.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段第二句“There was a long pause. “Jennifer, what are you hearing in the music?”(停顿了很长时间。“Jennifer,你在音乐里听到了什么?”)”可知Pasha尝试让Jennifer听到音乐里的故事。根据第七段第二句“Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.(现在公主出现了,她正在水边采花)”可知在后来她又在弹琴时跟Jennifer讲了故事,故可知通过边弹钢琴便讲述其中的故事,她带给了Jennifer灵感。故答案为By telling stories while playing the piano.
58.考查细节理解。根据第七段三四句“A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed.(一段快乐的音乐及时传到了Pasha舞动着的手指上。“哦,但她滑倒了!”音乐发生变化了)”可知,音乐之所以变化,是因为相关故事情节发生了变化。故答案为The development of the plot.
59.考查句意猜测。根据第二段倒数第二句“I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned (皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements.(我把手指放在琴键上。然后我皱起眉头,集中精力让页面上的音符与手指的动作相匹配)”可知,作者弹琴完全就是手指位置和音符位置对上,是机械僵硬的;而后文第三段第二三句“There was a long pause. “Jennifer, what are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.(停顿了很长时间。“Jennifer,你在音乐里听到了什么?” 我很奇怪地看着她,承认我不知道她的意思)”可知,Pasha问她听到什么时,她承认没听到什么,这也说明她弹琴只是手指在动,没有思想。故答案为The author acknowledged that when playing the piano she only moved figures automatically without thinking.
60.考查推理判断。根据第二段第三句“With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play.(Pasha笑着坐在我旁边的钢琴长椅上,打开我的乐谱,让我弹奏)”可知Pasha很友善,愿意教一个不认识的人学钢琴;根据第七段第三句“A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers.(一段快乐的音乐及时传到了Pasha舞动的手指上)”再结合她用边弹奏边讲故事的方法教会作者弹钢琴可知,Pasha很擅长弹钢琴且充满智慧。故答案为Pasha is not only a friendly girl but a great and intelligent piano player.Because she helped the author learn piano in an effective way.

阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。

Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family. “Mum and Dad made all our furniture,” she said. “Not because we couldn't afford it: they just liked making things.

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
52.How did the team members overcome the difficulties? (no more than 10 words)
53.What does the underlined word “superiority” refer to? (1 word)
54.What’s the main idea of the 4th paragraph? (no more than 10 words)
55.Do you like group learning? And give your reasons. (no more than 25 words)
【答案】51.An English singing competition. 52.By teaching and encouraging those couldn’t sing well. 53.Advantages./Benefits. 54.Advantages to studying in groups. 55.Yes,I do. I like group learning. Because group learning can make us walk longer, and we can do things better.
根据文章第一段“But the most impressive experience for me was an English singing competition.(但给我印象最深刻的经历是一次英语歌唱比赛)”可知,作者感到难忘经历的小组学习是一次英语歌唱比赛。故答案为An English singing competition.
52.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“So, we taught those who couldn’t sing and encouraged those who were very shy. Finally, we sang it really well and got first prize.( 所以,我们教那些不会唱歌的人,鼓励那些非常害羞的人。最后,我们唱得很好,得了一等奖)”可知,员们通过教导和鼓励那些唱不好的人来克服困难。故答案为By teaching and encouraging those couldn’t sing well.
53.考查词义猜测。根据文章第四段“Everyone has advantages and disadvantages. When we work in teams, we can learn from each other and fill in teaming gaps. Also, it’s easy to give up when studying alone. And with each other’s encouragement, We’ll be more likely to be able to persist.( 每个人都有优点和缺点。当我们在团队中工作时,我们可以互相学习,填补团队的空白。此外,独自学习时很容易放弃。有了彼此的鼓励,我们更有可能坚持下去)”可知,小组学习有许多好处或优势。由此推断,划线词“superiority”为“优势或好处”。故答案为Advantages./Benefits.
54.考查段落大意。根据第四段“From this experience, I realized that studying in groups has a lot of superiority.(从这次经历中,我意识到小组学习有很多优势)”可知,本段大意为小组学习的优势。故答案为Advantages to studying in groups.
