I have loved my favorite dance group called Above & Beyond for 15 years. They have always been a positive influence in my life through their songs and kindness.
A few days ago, the group were holding a concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.I was going to go with my boyfriend but he had to leave for a business trip. When I was worried I had no one to go with, my best friend Sandra called me and said, “Karina, I will go with you and take care of everything.Just buy your ticket before they are sold out.” I was so excited!
Above & Beyond would pick four people from the crowd during the concert, take them to the stage and push a button from one of their songs.I remember saying to Sandra when we got there, “Imagine if we get to push the button tonight.” We both laughed and said, “Um, no.”
After enjoying the music for two hours, a gentleman in black started walking towards us.I thought he was going to the people behind us because they were a little noisy, so I said to Sandra, “Uh oh, someone is getting kicked out.” But he came straight to us and said, “No kidding.Above& Beyond would like to invite you to push the button.” I did not believe it at first, but he repeated what he had said and I started crying. He took us through huge crowds of people cheering and giving us high fives. We went backstage and I saw Tony, who was a member of the group. He walked up to me, hugged(拥抱) me and said, “Are you ready to push the button?” I cried so much out of happiness.
That day made me believe that when you want something badly enough, it can happen.

It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom.Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all.Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest.Music with a higher intensity(强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume(音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn't matter.Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance.Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there's actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It's hard to convince my students that music doesn't help with their concentration.Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply.I don't have writer's block. It's easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me.“You could actually be singing along with what you're listening to and doing well in math.”

Do you ever listen to the songs that your parents like? Chances are that you don't.You probably think the music that they like is old and boring and that the songs on your playlist are much cooler. But scientists found that people's music taste changes as time goes by.So it is likely that your own musical preferences will follow a similar path to your parents', whether you like it or not.
We used to think that culture and personality(个性) are the only reasons for different music choices. But researchers at the University of Cambridge noticed that as people enter into different age groups, their social environment changes, and so does their music taste. There are some musical periods that people go through in their life.
The first period comes in the teenage years, during which people like strong music such as punk and rock, because teenagers tend to be aggressive or want to be independent.
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyles change and they want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become fonder of contemporary music, such as pop and R&B, which is usually uplifting and danceable.
When middle age comes, most people have settled down.During this period, people prefer music, such as jazz and classical, as well as music like country, folk and blues.
As for old people, they prefer old songs in their childhoods. They generally listen to relaxing music, such as country music and jazz music. But you must be questioning. “Aren't there old people who are still interested in or even crazy about rock music?” Of course there are.But their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. At that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youth.
