Mid-afternoon on a particularly busy Tuesday, I took leave of my desk at work and walked into a local Starbucks, only to find a space where neither my clients (客户) nor my children would ask me to do something.
Inside, I ran into Kate, a co-worker of mine. The topic of parenthood came up. I complained about how packed my schedule was. From the minute I woke up to the minute I fell asleep, I was constantly in demand and always had someone knocking at the door. But a bit of sadness seemed to come over Kate’s face.
“Well, my daughter’s in San Francisco and she doesn’t seem to need me at all these days.” Kate said. It was in that moment that I realized although I might often feel in high demand, there will come a day when I’ll actually miss that same stress I now complain about.
And as our conversation continued, it turned to our children’s younger years, with Kate smiling proudly, thinking of the little boy and girl she raised who are now a man and a woman. But I noticed her smile was marked with regret. She explained that she often wondered about what she could have done differently when her children were in their earlier years.
This got me thinking. Is regret an unfortunate footnote (注脚) to parenthood? With that in mind, I asked six older parents one question: What is your biggest regret from your early days as a parent?
It turned out that all of them thought they could have done it better. But, each of them also has a strong, healthy relationship with their kids. Whatever regrets their parents might have had about their upbringing, one thing is clear — it didn’t affect them in a meaningful way.
The bottom line is, we all feel like we could be doing this parenting thing better, And quite clearly, years later, we’re still going to look back and wish we tried things differently. But the past can’t be changed, and neither should it.
24. Why does the author go to a local Starbucks?
A. To have an appointment with one of his clients.
B. To have a discussion about parenthood with Kate.
C. To enjoy a delicious coffee with her friends.
D. To escape from the pressures around her.
25. Why did Kate feel sad and regretful?
A. Because she couldn’t get on well with her daughter.
B. Because she hardly paid any attention to her kids.
C. Because she was disappointed with her kids’ performance.
D. Because she thought that she could have done better.
26. What can we learn according to the fifth and sixth paragraph?
A. Not every parent has a good relationship with their kids.
B. The author was moved by what these parents had done.
C. These parents didn’t make a meaningful life for their children.
D. None of the parents were totally content with the way they raised kids.
27. What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Give as much love as you can to kids.
B. Don’t limit kids’ freedom as they grow up.
C. Treasure the present and be a good parent.
D. Learn how to be a good parent from others.

Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be unrecognizable from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing severe erosion (侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors-like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and that the more heat-trapping gases humans put into the atmosphere, the worse the influences on the world’s beaches are likely to be.
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast revolves around the beach for much of the year.
Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking action. Places like Miami Beach are trucking in thousands of tons of sand to patch up (修复) badly eroded shorelines, while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle.
However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments are able to stick to modest cuts to heat-trapping gas pollution, the researchers found that 22%of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40%by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited.
28. Which is the biggest contributor to severe beach erosion?
A. Damaging storms. B. Wave erosion.
C. Coastal building. D. Sea level rise.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. It is hard to protect coastal beaches.
B One third of storms take place near beaches.
C. Beaches are of great significance to our lives.
D. Most Australians live on beach tourism.
30. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. Popularizing the beaches.
B. Holding sand in place.
C. Reducing the project costs.
D. Stopping global warming.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Half beaches could disappear by 2100.
B. Climate change is doing harm to our lives.
C. The beach is more than a vacation destination.
D. Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion.

Few people doubt the value of developing students' thinking skills. A focus on critical thinking is common in education. In the Australian Curriculum, critical thinking and creative thinking are known as “general capabilities”. The US has a similar focus through their “common core".
Many approaches to developing critical thinking are based on Philosophy for Children. One strategy that has a large impact on students' ability to analyse and evaluate arguments is argument mapping, in which a student's reasoning can be visually displayed by capturing the inferential pathway from assumption to conclusion. This type of argument-based intellectual engagement can show high outcomes in terms of the quality of thinking in any classroom. Research also shows deliberate attention to the practice of reasoning in the context of our everyday lives can be significantly improved through targeted teaching.
Teachers at one high school in Australia, who have much training in critical thinking teaching methods, developed a task that asked students to determine Australia's greatest sports person. Students needed to construct their own criteria for greatness. To do so, they had to analyze the Australian sporting context, create possible evaluative standards, explain and justify why some standards would be more acceptable than others and apply these to their candidates. They then needed to argue their case with their classmates to develop criteria that were solid, defensible, widely applicable and produced a choice that seized significant and relevant aspects of Australian sport.
Researchers looking at the gains made in a single term of teaching critical thinking with argument mapping said the critical thinking gains measured are close to those that could be expected to result from three years of undergraduate education. Students who are taught to think well also do better on subject-based exams and standardized tests than those who do not.
In terms of developing 21st century skills, which includes setting up students for lifelong learning, teaching critical thinking should be core business.
32. Which of the following can explain the underlined word “capturing" in Paragraph 2?
A. Describing. B. Attracting. C. Designing. D. Blocking.
33. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To construct the criteria for being great.
B. To acknowledge the teachers' outcomes.
C. To present how to teach critical thinking.
D. To emphasize the importance of reasoning.
34. What is the author's attitude toward teaching critical thinking?
A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Cautious.
35. What does this text imply?
A. Teaching methods should vary among schools.
B. Research on education deserves more attention.
C. Critical thinking should be valued in education.
D. Concepts of critical thinking aren't well received.

Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school and having people like me. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit so the first day would be perfect.
On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was geometry, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope I see you again and your day goes all right.”
I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular.
A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to go find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it?” He looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.

W: Today I have some interesting news for animal lovers. Scientists have created a clever way to protect farms from elephants in South Africa of course elephants don’t attack humans or try to eat pets but when these creatures wander near farms or houses they can easily crush plants structures or cars with their feet. Recently farmers have started using bees to keep elephants away. Why would this work elephants aren’t big fans of bees when they hear recordings of bees through speakers around the farm they run away. Bees can stay and elephants can breathe in these insects through their sensitive noses. The best part is that it doesn’t harm the elephants it just reminds them to stay away. This creative solution was proposed this spring with tests of its results beginning this summer and finishing this autumn. If this works it will protect farms all over Africa. It’s amazing how creative ideas like this can help protect both animals and farms. Now let’s hear from the owner of this agricultural center.

D None of the parents were totally content with the way they raised kids.
27. What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Give as much love as you can to kids.
B. Don’t limit kids’ freedom as they grow up.
C. Treasure the present and be a good parent.
D. Learn how to be a good parent from others.
D 25. D 26. D 27. C

文章第一段中提到“Mid-afternoon on a particularly busy Tuesday, I took leave of my desk at work and walked into a local Starbucks, only to find a space where neither my clients nor my children would ask me to do something.(在一个特别忙碌的周二午后,我离开了办公桌,走进了一家当地的星巴克,只为找到一个既不会被客户也不会被孩子要求做事的地方。)”
根据第四段中提到“She explained that she often wondered about what she could have done differently when her children were in their earlier years.(她解释说,她经常在想,当她的孩子们还小的时候,她能做些什么不同的事情。)”;同时结合第五和第六段“What is your biggest regret from your early days as a parent?( 在你为人父母的早期,你最大的遗憾是什么?)以及“It turned out that all of them thought they could have done it better. (结果他们都认为他们可以做得更好。)”可知,这说明Kate对自己在孩子小时候的教育方式有所反思,认为自己当时可以做得更好。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“With that in mind, I asked six older parents one question: What is your biggest regret from your early days as a parent?(带着这样的想法,我问了6位年长的父母一个问题:你做父母之初最大的遗憾是什么?)”以及第六段“It turned out that all of them thought they could have done it better. (结果他们都认为他们可以做得更好。)”可知,在作者询问的年长的父母中,没有一个父母对他们的养育方式完全满意即他们对于自己抚养孩子的方式并不是完全满意,还有欠缺的地方。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The bottom line is, we all feel like we could be doing this parenting thing better, And quite clearly, years later, we’re still going to look back and wish we tried things differently. But the past can’t be changed, and neither should it.(最重要的是,我们都觉得我们可以做得更好,而且很明显,多年以后,我们回首往事,还是会希望我们尝试了不同的方法。但是过去不能改变,也不应该改变。)”可知,作者认为抚养孩子方面我们能做的更好。多年后我们可能回首往事时希望尝试的方法有所不同。但是我们改变不了过去,就不要改变它,而是珍惜现在的生活即过去是不能改变,要珍惜现在的时间,尽最大努力做父母。故选C。
C
B. One third of storms take place near beaches.
D 29. C 30. B 31. A

The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors,得知有很多因素会造成沙滩被侵蚀,其中海平面上升是导致沙滩严重侵蚀的最大因素。
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities得知很难夸大世界上的海滩有多重要。
根据第四段while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle. 得知this指代的是Hold sand in place。
Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. 故选A。
D
A 33. C 34. B 35. C

In terms of developing 21st century skills, which includes setting up students for lifelong learning, teaching critical thinking should be core business.

For example, some people eat mainly gourmet foods, such as caviar (鱼子酱) and lobster (龙虾), and they eat only in expensive restaurants. ___36___
Human beings can eat many different kinds of foods, but some people choose not to eat meat. ___37___Their personalities might be similar too. 67.

Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. Their shrill laughing let me blush with shame. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there, keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do is just to make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was certain, that is, I must removed myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to leave until they walked far away.
Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I felt very strange since I was new here without making any friends. Turning around, I saw Diane who came up to me with a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me. What a kind and friendly girl she was, I thought. I was deeply moved so that I left all my embarrassment and sadness behind. On our way home, we talked a lot and I was surprised to find we had a lot in common. I also realized the true meaning of a friend.
