“I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” With her eyebrows raised she continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show—I think you have great potential (潜能) to be someone very important.”
I listened carefully to every word.
“I’ve been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far.”

How to stop complaining (抱怨) and enjoy a happy life? You can find answers in the book A Complaint-Free World. I’m sure you will get even more if you read it.
A Complaint-Free World
Who
Will Bowen, the writer of the book, is American. He loves sports, traveling and reading.
In 2006, he began the “Don’t complain” campaign (运动): He asked each person to wear a bracelet (手环). As long as the person felt his complaint, he had to change the bracelet to the other hand until the bracelet could be worn on the same hand for 21 days.
What
If a team wants to succeed, the members should never complain about each other. It’s better to change themselves. In fact, we complain about ourselves sometimes. If so, we should learn to accept ourselves; If we complain about others, we should try to turn complaints into requests. Only in this way, will there be a great change in our life.
How
Less than a month after the book came out, 60 million people joined the “No Complaining” campaign. Bill Gates said, “No one can refuse such a book unless he refuses all the books.”

Have you ever had a question in your mind about why we Chinese people are still using chopsticks? Why don’t we use forks and knives?
Chopsticks are kitchen and eating tools. They have been used all over East Asia for over 2,000 years. They were first invented and used by the Chinese during the Zhou Dynasty. Chopsticks later spread to other countries across East, South and South East Asia. They are usually made of bamboo or wood. But at first, chopsticks are not used as eating tools. They were probably used for cooking such as stirring (搅拌) the fire. Then people found it was convenient to eat by using chopsticks. Then chopsticks began to be used as eating tools during the Han Dynasty.
Why not use forks and knives? In our mind, forks and knives are made of metal (金属). They are more similar to weapons. How could dangerous weapons be used on the eating tables? And can you imagine how terrible it is to use forks and knives while we are taking food out of the hot pot? Then chopsticks perfectly solve this problem.
What’s more, we believe in the idea of being simple. With the two sticks, we can do many things. Also, chopsticks contain (包含) the principle (理念) of “Yin and Yang”. Besides, if you take a close look at the chopsticks, you will find the chopsticks are round on one side and square on the other side. So the round side means the sky and the square side means the earth. And when we hold chopsticks, our fingers are between the two sticks. That’s our understanding of the relationship between man and the world.
31. Why does the writer ask two questions at the beginning of the text?
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To show the importance of chopsticks.
C To describe the influence of chopsticks. D. To predict the future of chopsticks.
32. Which question’s answer can’t be found in Paragraph 2?
A. When were chopsticks invented? B. Why are we still using chopsticks?
C. What are chopsticks made of? D. What were chopsticks first used for?
33. Which of the following may be a kind of “weapons” ?
A. Guns. B. Grapes. C. Chopsticks. D. Caps.
34. What does the writer mainly want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Chopsticks are the perfect eating tools. B. Chopsticks contain much Chinese culture.
C. People hold chopsticks between the two sticks. D. The two sides of the chopsticks mean the earth and the sky.
35. Which can be a proper title for the text?
A. The History of Chopsticks B. Chopsticks and Cooking
C. Culture in Chinese Chopsticks D. Chopsticks or Forks and Knives

Two eighth graders from Austin, US, have created a “smart cane (拐杖)”. It helps people who can’t see things clearly.
Ahyan Hassan and Hasan Rizvi made the cane for a school science competition. The cane has sensors (传感器) that can “see” obstacles (障碍物) up to 1.5 meters away. It won the first prize in the competition.
“We put blood, sweat and tears into this. We were really excited to win.” Hassan told the newspaper KXAN News.
The boys have been best friends since the third grade. “We have lots of things in common. We both like science and have curiosity (好奇心),” Hassan explained. “When we see something, we always want to know how it works or why it works.”
Their idea came from the old canes of Rizvi’s grandfather. “My grandfather is almost blind and has bad legs,” Rizvi said. “It’s hard for him to get from place to place.” So the boys added some sensors to a cane. When they “see” things, they send information to the cane. Then the cane will shake to remind the user.
“I hope this encourages other people to think outside the box, and that’s my goal,” Rizzi said.
Both boys hope to become engineers when they grow up. They also plan to improve their invention to compete in more science fairs in the future.

A To introduce the topic of the text. B. To show the importance of chopsticks.
C. To describe the influence of chopsticks.
