A month ago, when we were brainstorming ideas for my column, my editor approached me with a challenge: spend $10 at the local second-hand store Goodwill and turn my finds into new treasures. I hesitated. I was doubtful about my ability to turn trash (废物) into treasure. But the New Year seemed like a good time to push the limits of my creativity, so I made up my mind to give it a shot.
I took my $10 and went to the Goodwill. I spent over an hour digging through shelves, looking for something I could safely upcycle. I was not especially handy, so I didn’t want to use anything with breakable bits. I also didn’t want to damage an old hardcover book for the purpose of decoration.
Therefore, I took a step back and decided to choose a project before I picked my items. I thought back to an article I once wrote on container gardening and decided that I could make a pretty planter out of almost anything. With my new goal in mind, I chose a basket and a bag of stones I could use for drainage (排水) for plants.
It felt cheap to just fill the containers with soil, but my limited skills left me with few tools at home. Plus, I needed plants. So I picked up paint and plants from the market. Then I sprayed (喷) the basket. I never seemed to be able to add enough color to the basket. I figured it might look better when it dried. Next morning, although I followed a number of online recommendations, I found my workspace was a mess after watering my precious plants in their new home.
The process of turning trash into treasure was stressful, but the finished products have found a place in my home. Unconsciously, I have fallen in love with it and hopefully, I will gain some of the skills that will take my game to the next level next year.
24. Why did the author regard the editor’s suggestion as a challenge?
A. For lack of enough time. B. For being short of creative ideas.
C. For the complexity of the task. D. For being inexperienced in recycling.
25. Which word best describes the author’s character according to paragraph 2?
A. Conservative. B. Flexible. C. Sensitive. D. Modest.
26. What inspired the author to grow plants?
A. A planting project. B. An article about gardening.
C. The editor’s words. D. The items found in the Goodwill.
27 What does the author’s upcycling lead to finally?
A. A messy workspace. B. A new career path.
C. Valued parts of home. D. Better painting skills.

A research team led by Prof. Gan Jianping, from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in China, carried out field observations and conducted numerical simulations (数值模拟) in the South China Sea (SCS) recently and disclosed never-before-seen characteristics of the ocean movement in the SCS.
The complex ocean circulation system controls the energy change and water mass transport in the SCS, and affects the biogeochemical processes, the carbon budget, ocean ecosystems, regional climate change, and the sustainable economic and social development in surrounding countries and regions, which account for about 22% of the world’s population. Studies on the SCS circulation and dynamics are regarded as the foundation of understanding the SCS.
In the past few decades, there has been growing global attention to ocean circulation research on the SCS. However, scientific understanding of the three-dimensional water movement in this region is still very limited and sometimes even wrong. This is caused by the lack of acts of careful watching, no reliable numerical model, and limited knowledge of the complex physical processes in the SCS circulation.
Until recently, a research team led by Prof. Gan confirmed that the SCS circulation has a three-layer (层) structure, where sea water circles anticlockwise, clockwise and clockwise in the upper, middle and bottom layers, respectively. The study also found that the three-layer circulation is composed of the dynamically active “hotspots” along the continental slope (斜坡) surrounding the deep basin, instead of an orderly structure in the entire region as previously thought.
Prof. Gan says “Because of failure to discover the dynamic ‘hotspot’ in the sea, almost all global models cannot accurately simulate the three-layer circulation structure and related physics in the SCS. Therefore, compared with research on the open ocean, our understanding and simulation of the SCS circulation, forced by multiple factors and many dynamic processes, requires greater effort and determination than expected.”
28. Which aspect of the study on the SCS circulation is stressed in paragraph 2?
A. The focus. B. The goal. C. The significance. D. The background.
29. What made it difficult to understand the SCS water movement?
A. Few detailed observations of it. B. Little global attention to it.
C. A shortage of numerical models. D. Ignorance of the physical processes.
30 What did the study find about the SCS circulation?
A. It covers hotspots of the entire region. B. Its three-layer structure is in good order.
C. It is formed in the deep basin of the SCS. D. Its lower layers circulate in the same direction.
31. How does Prof. Gan find their work?
A. It is a bit conventional. B. It is rather challenging.
C. It is partly unsuccessful. D. It is physically demanding.

Some ants have figured out how to avoid getting lost: build taller anthills, according to a recent study.
Desert ants living in the hot, flat salt pans of Tunisia spend their days looking for food and reach as far as 1.1 kilometers from their nests. To find their way home, desert ants use a navigation system, relying on the sun’s position and counting their steps to track their location relative to their nest.
But this system becomes increasingly unreliable as the distance from the nest increases. “We realized that, whenever the ants in salt pans came closer to their nest, they suddenly pinpointed the nest hill from several meters distance,” says Markus Knaden, a researcher at Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology. “This made us think that the hill serves as a nest-defining landmark.”
So Knaden and colleagues captured ants from nests in the middle of salt pans and from along their shorelines. Only salt-pan nests had distinct hills, up to 40 centimeters tall, whereas the hills on shoreline nests were lower or barely noticeable. Next, the team removed any hills and placed the captured insects some distance away from their nests. Salt-pan ants struggled more than shore ants to find homes. Shore ants relied on the shoreline for guidance and weren’t affected by the hill removal, the researchers concluded.
The team further conducted another study to see if desert ants were deliberately building a taller hill when their surroundings lacked any visible landmarks. So, the researchers removed the hills of 16 salt-pan nests and installed (安装) two 50-centimeter-tall blocks near eight of them. The other eight nests were left without any artificial visual aid. After three days, the researchers found that seven ants from the unaided nests had rebuilt their hills. But only two ants from the nests with man-made blocks nearby had bothered to rebuild.
“It implies that ants regularly assess the complexity of their environment and change their decisions based on their conclusion,” says ecologist Judith Bronstein of the University of Arizona.
32. What aspect of ants is the recent study mainly about?
A. Challenges of survival. B. Landmarks of habitats.
C. Intelligence of navigation. D. Comparison of varieties.
33. What does the underlined word “pinpointed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Explored. B. Recognized. C. Climbed. D. Crossed.
34. Why did researchers set shoreline ants in the experiment?
A. To observe different ants’ reactions. B. To prove impacts of various habitats.
C. To disturb desert ants’ navigation system. D. To test anthills’ functions and significance.
35. What conclusion about desert ants can be drawn from the follow-up study?
A. Evaluate and make changes. B. Visual aid is a must.
C. Cooperation brings victory. D. No man-made blocks are used.

Hearing that one neighbor had just welcomed a new litter, Allen, a 9- year- old boy, rushed to see the newborn cats. However, during his visit, Allen noticed one of the cats wasn’t moving due to disability on its hind (后面的) legs. So while the other little cats were exploring their surroundings, this one stayed behind.
Allen was significantly affected by the scene of this lonesome cat. He returned home and started to wonder whether he could do anything to help. When the boy told his mother about that, the mother recalled a video about pet wheelchairs.
They finally found the video on YouTube, in which an animal lover, Addy, shared a heartwarming and innovative project: building a wheelchair for a pet cat with mobility issues due to a hind- leg injury. As a caring pet owner, Addy took viewers through the DIY process of making a custom wheelchair to aid her cat’s movement and improve its quality of life. She began by measuring the cat and based on the measurements, cut the plastic pipes to make a frame (支架). Then she connected the pipes and attached the wheels to the back end of the frame. Finally, she added a harness (保护带) to ensure it was fit and comfortable for the cat.
Seeing the cat in the wheelchair moving around happily with the support, Allen thought that would be the best option for the little cat.
But the wheelchair in the video seemed too big and too heavy for a newborn cat. Where could he find the suitable materials?
His mother unearthed an old bag from the cupboard, whose belt was just fine for the the harness. As for the frame, they searched the storage room in their house and found an old umbrella, whose frame provided enough thin iron bars that were durable and light. But they were difficult for him to cut off. Allen thought his father could help. However, where could they find the small wheels? (320 words)

【原文】W: Holidays are special days for the people of one nation or culture. On these days, every day, activities such as work or school are normally stopped. Every country has several important holidays which can be national, religious or simply cultural. For example, people usually celebrate the start of spring on January first. Many holidays are celebrated in the winter, which is why this period is also known as the holiday season. Christmas is the biggest annual holiday for the Christian world celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
In most of the world it is celebrated on December 25. However, many traditional eastern churches use a different calendar, so for this reason they celebrate Christmas on January seven in addition to its religious importance, Christmas has also been adopted as a cultural holiday by many non-Christians. Each country has unique Christmas traditions, but nearly all of them include a large family gathering, decorating the house, exchanging gifts and having a long feast.
In some European countries, people go caroling that is singing special Christmas songs on the street or in the church. It has also become popular to have a Christmas tree both inside the house and on city squares.

C. For the complexity of the task. D. For being inexperienced in recycling.
25. Which word best describes the author’s character according to paragraph 2?
A. Conservative. B. Flexible. C. Sensitive. D. Modest.
26. What inspired the author to grow plants?
A. A planting project. B. An article about gardening.
C. The editor’s words. D. The items found in the Goodwill.
27. What does the author’s upcycling lead to finally?
A. A messy workspace. B. A new career path.
C. Valued parts of home. D. Better painting skills.
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. B 27. C

Prof. Gan says, “Because of failure to discover the dynamic ‘hotspot’ in the sea, almost all global models cannot accurately simulate the three-layer circulation structure and related physics in the SCS.
30. What did the study find about the SCS circulation?
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

A Explored. B. Recognized. C. Climbed. D. Crossed.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. A

故选A。
4. 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“After three days, the researchers found that seven ants from the unaided nests had rebuilt their hills. But only two ants from the nests with man-made blocks nearby had bothered to rebuild.(三天后,研究人员发现,无人帮助的蚂蚁巢中有七只蚂蚁重建了它们的丘陵。 故选A。

(320 words)

【答案】参考答案:

Allen got all the necessary materials for the wheelchair ready. Then he went to the neighbor’s to measure the cat and came back with the data. Together, they built a tiny wheelchair for the little cat. The caring boy was excited and proud when he looked at the wheelchair. It was a joint effort.
