Meanwhile, Portia’s father has left a will stating that any man who wishes to marry her must choose the correct casket out of three, one gold, one silver, and one lead. Many men have tried and failed, but Bassanio correctly chooses the lead casket and wins Portia’s hand in marriage. Back in Venice, news reaches Antonio that his ships, which were carrying his goods and making him money, have been lost at sea. He is unable to repay his debt to Shylock, who demands his pound of flesh as agreed. Portia, disguised as a lawyer, arrives in Venice to help Antonio. She argues that Shylock  must take it without losing any blood, as stated in their agreement. Shylock is forced to give up his claim, and Antonio is saved. Before, there was other research suggesting that people wouldn’t like to give feedback because they’re afraid that it will hurt the other person’s feelings, or doing so may harm their relationships. The APA research found out there might be another reason why people refuse to give feedback: They don’t fully realize that their suggestions can help improve others’ performances, so they often underestimate others’ needs for such feedback. To test their thought, the APA researchers did a series of experiments with 1,984 volunteers. In one experiment, volunteers were shown 10 possible awkward (令人难堪的) situations at work, where they could give or receive useful feedback. In another experiment, volunteers were asked to think of a situation where they had the chance to give or receive useful feedback. In the final experiment, volunteers worked in pairs—one practises a speech for a competition and the other listens and provides feedback. During these three experiments, those who should give feedback always underestimated receivers’ needs for it. The more important the feedback was, the more often volunteers underestimated the other’s needs for feedback and the less likely they wanted to offer it. The gap (差距) was smaller in more daily situations, such as when the other person had food on their faces. The researchers were surprised to find that simply asking “If you were this person, would you want feedback?” helped volunteers understand the value of feedback to the other person and helped close the giver-receiver gap. “Feedback is a key to personal growth and improvement.” said Francesca Gino, the leader of the research. “The next time you hear someone mispronounce a word, or see a dirty mark on their shirt, point it out to them—they probably want feedback more than you think.” 42.According to other research before, people don’t give feedback because ________. A.they don’t like doing so B.they’re afraid of bad results C.they’re bad at getting along with others D.they can’t realize others’ needs 43.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.The experiment. B.The feedback. C.The situation. D.The speech. 44.How can we make people more willing to offer useful feedback? A.Help them to remember great feelings of helping others. B.Train them to pay attention to much bigger problems. C.Encourage them to ask about the other persons’ needs. D.Get them to imagine they’re in the other persons’ shoes. 45.What does Francesca Gino mainly try to do in the last paragraph? A.Present a fact. B.Give warnings. C.Provide advice. D.Make a summary. 根据第二段中“Before, there was other research suggesting that people wouldn’t like to give feedback because they’re afraid that it will hurt the other person’s feelings, or doing so may harm their relationships.” 根据第四段中“The more important the feedback was, the more often volunteers underestimated the other’s needs for feedback and the less likely they wanted to offer it.” 根据第五段内容“The researchers were surprised to find that simply asking ‘If you were this person, would you want feedback?’ helped volunteers understand the value of feedback to the other person and helped close the giver-receiver gap.” 根据最后一段内容“‘Feedback is a key to personal growth and improvement.’ said Francesca Gino, the leader of the research. ‘The next time you hear someone mispronounce a word, or see a dirty mark on their shirt, point it out to them—they probably want feedback more than you think.’” (每空一词) 46.I think prices of daily goods bought (凭借) the Internet are lower than store prices. 47.What great progress the recent medical (研究) on deaf children has made. 48.We can leave (无论什么时候) you are ready. 49.In this park, you can enjoy all the water sports, or (简单) lie on the beach. 50.You should have the (勇气) to take on new challenges. 51.Flying across the Atlantic Ocean was a great in the human history. Without Eva, St Clare’s life was empty. But he started to think of Eva’s words about his slaves(奴隶). So one morning he went into town and he started the legal steps necessary for Tom’s emancipation(解放). The next day he called Tom. “Well, Tom,” he said, “I’m going to make you free, so pack your things, and get ready to leave for Kentucky soon.” He was upset when he saw the sudden light of joy in Tom’s face. He did not expect Tom to be so ready to leave him. “Are you so unhappy here? Am I not a good master?” he said. “No, no, Master! You are a good master, but I’m happy because I am a free man.” “I understand, Tom. You’ll be free in about a month,” said St Clare. “Do you think that with your work you can earn the clothes and food and the life that I give you every day?” “No, I don’t, Master is too good, but I prefer to have poor clothes, a poor house, poor everything, but to know that they are mine and not Master’s.” One day, St Clare went into town alone. While St Clare was walking into town, he saw some drunks fighting, and he tried to stop them. One of the men had a knife. When St Clare tried to take it from him, the drunk killed him. St Clare’s death made things very dangerous for the slaves. While he was living, they belonged to him, and he treated them kindly. But now they belonged to Marie, and they knew things were going to be very different. Miss Ophelia treated Tom with respect and kindness, so Tom decided to ask her to help him. “I will speak for you, Tom, and do my best,” said Miss Ophelia, “but there isn’t much hope.” “Absolutely not,” was Marie’s answer. “I can sell Tom at the highest price and make a lot of money. Besides, he doesn’t need his freedom. Slaves don’t know what to do with freedom.” —Taken from Uncle Tom’s Cabin 56.How did Tom feel when St Clare wanted to make Tom free? 57.Why did Tom prefer to go home and live a hard life? 58.What did St Clare do when some drunks were fighting? 59.Did Marie also treat Tom kindly?
