My daughter Emma is in Grade 7. In her class, there is a young boy called Jake. He is quite overweight, so he is usually fooled.
For several nights Emma came home from school, being upset about the fact. She also mentioned that Jake had no school supplies (用品) as his family couldn’t afford them. She said she wanted to help him. So one night, we sat together and discussed the situation.
The next day Emma asked Jake to make a list for her. She would give extra supplies that she had at home to him. He was very thankful and made a small list: erasers, paper, pens and pencils.
That evening Emma and I went to the store where we bought everything on his list! Also, Emma mentioned that he needed a new pencil box. When we got home, we put all the supplies into a new schoolbag with a note, “Jake, I hope you can enjoy the supplies.”
The next day, I asked the school headmaster to give the bag to Jake. After Jake read the note, he thanked Emma very much and said he loved those all! Later that day when I picked up Emma after school, she was happy. As for Jake, I saw him walking home happily with his new schoolbag. It was a good feeling to know we had made a difference in his life!

Painting and writing on walls is nothing new. In prehistoric times, people in Africa and Europe painted pictures of animals and people in caves. Graffiti (涂鸦) has been found at ancient sites in Greece, Italy, Syria and Iraq. In the Roman town of Pompeii in Italy, archaeologists (考古学家) found a lot of graffiti written in Latin, including political and romantic messages, and even some magic spells!
In the 1970s, young people in New York used pens to write their names, or “tags”, on walls around the city. One of the first “taggers” was Demetrius, a teenager from a Greek family. He wrote his tag on walls in his neighborhood and in subway stations on the way to school. Other teenagers saw Demetrius’s tag and started writing their own tags on walls, buses and subway trains all over New York. Their tags were bigger and more colorful and appeared on trains, buses and walls around the world. In the 1990s and 2000s, a lot of graffiti artists started to make pictures, too.
In many countries, it is a crime to paint on walls and street artists can have problems with the police. In other countries, street art is permitted (准许) in certain places. Nowadays, street art is more popular with the public. In some cities, there are street art festivals. In Bristol in the UK, there is a street art festival in August every year. Artists paint all the buildings in a street. Lots of people come to watch the artists and take photos. Street art can be seen in galleries (美术馆), too. Many young street artists use the Internet to communicate and share their works with others.
Although we don’t know what will happen to street art in the future, we can be sure that it is here to stay!

B. to tell the development of graffiti and street art
C. to tell what will happen to street art in the future
D. to tell the relationship between graffiti and street art

It might be fun to use your smart phone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smart phone for a long time can cause eyestrain (劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smart phone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smart phones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.
46. According to the passage, you can’t sleep well because you ________.
A. take a break every 15 minutes
B. have lower levels of white matter
C. use screens too much before bedtime
D. are the people from 13 to 64
47. You may read the passage in ________.
A. a novel B. a travel diary C. a guide book D. a science magazine
48. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Ways to Keep Healthy
B. The Harm of Using Screens Too Much
C. The Ways to Use Screens
D. The Best Time to Use Screens

Who invented the umbrella? There are many different opinions. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it, some say the Romans invented it and some say Luban’s wife invented it in ancient China. There’s even an interesting story about its invention in China.
Luban was the most famous craftsman in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were soaked when they got back home. Luban’s wife said, “If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful.” Then Luban said, “That’s easy. I will build many pavilions (亭).” His wife replied, “That’s a good idea, but it is not convenient. Is it possible to make a movable pavilion, which could always follow the people?” She thought all day and all night. One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus (莲) leaf over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. That gave her a great idea. Then, she made the first umbrella in ancient China.
Since the umbrella was invented, it has been part of people’s life in every corner of the world. Right now, there are many kinds of umbrellas, such as beach umbrellas, kids umbrellas and market umbrellas.
How many umbrellas are made every year in the world? Maybe millions or even more. One interesting thing is that most umbrellas in the world are made in China. Shangyu in Zhejiang Province alone has more than 1,000 umbrella factories and it is called “China Umbrella City”.
