When my daughter was seven years old, she came home from soccer practice clearly downhearted. When asked, she told me what a teammate said: her teeth were too yellow. My heart broke for her. As parents, we try to keep our children safe, but we can’t always be there to protect our kids from unkind words. I tried to console my daughter. I told her that she has a beautiful smile with nice, strong, healthy teeth. I told her not to let someone else’s criticisms influence her. On the inside, though, I worried. From my youth, I’ve struggled with the concept that my self-worth was directly related to my physical appearance.
When I became a mom, I was afraid that this concept would take root in my daughter. I wanted to protect her little ears from unkind words that might skew(歪曲) her idea of self-worth. I wanted to protect her little eyes from unrealistic beauty standards set by magazines, television, and movies. I wanted to protect her little heart from being broken by the thought that she didn’t live up to the standards in some way.
How, then, can we teach our kids that they are much more than their appearance? We can start by modeling kindness, and self-acceptance in our own lives. Kids tend to copy what adults do and say, so be careful. If we are putting ourselves down, our kids will follow in our footsteps. Instead, adopt a positive attitude when it comes to your own self-worth. Praise kids for their acts of kindness, like sharing with a friend or helping a family member without being asked and talk to them about how it makes them feel.
It’s a hard thing for parents to teach children to be confident in their own skin and to pay more attention to their inner beauty than outward appearance. It’s also worthy of note that there’s nothing wrong with telling your kids they are beautiful. I tell my kids that they’re beautiful all the time. Hopefully, in doing so, they’ll begin to understand that there’s so much more to them than just their shells.
4. What does the underlined word “console” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A. Influence. B. Comfort. C. Accompany. D. Criticize.
5. What does the author try to express in paragraph 2?
A. Her expectation of her daughter’s future. B. Her concerns about her daughter’s growth.
C. Her hope to protect her kid from falling ill. D. Her attempts to keep her daughter energetic.
6. How should we educate our kids about self-worth according to the author?
A. By delivering a speech to them. B. By sharing our ideas with them.
C. By accepting all their decisions. D. By setting a good example to them.
7. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Encourage kids to ignore the outer beauty.
B Avoid praising the appearance of our children.
C. Teach our kids the significance of inner beauty.
D. Try to listen to our children as much as possible.
B 5. B 6. D 7. C

It’s a typical day at school. You’re playing soccer with your friends. One of them kicks you the ball and you run for it. You trip. You fly through the air. You land—hard, right on your face! The next moment, you’re in the nurse’s office. Your bleeding nose is being checked by laser sensors (激光传感器) that coming out of a...robot? Has the nurse’s office been taken over by sci-fi aliens (外星人) from outer space?
No. You’ve just been pushed forward 15 years into the future. And it’s a future that Susan Epstein, a computer science professor who teaches artificial intelligence, is really excited to think about. “I am crazy about this kind of thing! You could go up to the robot, put your nose in, and the machine would decide whether you needed to be treated, and how.”
Aside from being cool, an AI nurse has other advantages. It doesn’t need to take vacations. It doesn’t need to get paid a salary. And it might figure out what’s wrong with your nose faster than a human would. There are all kinds of ways that AI could be used to help make us healthier and researchers are studying how to use AI to diagnose (诊断) lung disease, cancer, and more.
Our robot nurse isn’t meant to completely take the place of humans, though. “It would work with real, live nurses and doctors,” says Epstein, “there are things humans are good at, like building trust among members of our own species or comforting someone who’s hurt or sick. A big part of medicine is the relationship between a doctor and a patient.”
Epstein points out that AI programs will never be perfect—no matter how much we might want them to be. But if AI can diagnose a deadly disease more precisely even 10 percent of the time, think of how many lives it could save. “Besides”, says Epstein, “I think there are probably patients who might prefer to have a machine for a doctor!” Would you?
8. What’s the function of para 1?
A. To introduce a scientific study.
B. To lead to the topic of the text.
C. To describe an experience of the writer.
D. To give an example to support an argument.
9. What can be inferred from Epstein’s words in para 4?
A. Humans are better at treating patients than AI doctors.
B. AI doctors alone can cure patients of most of the diseases.
C. Patients’ trust in doctors may affect their treatments positively.
D. Patients may receive as much comfort from AI doctors as from humans.
10. What is true about AI doctors and nurses according to the text?
A. They are better at trust-building.
B. They will take over humans.
C Their biggest strength is being cool.
D. They are life-saving if properly used.
11. What’s Epstein’s attitude towards AI doctors and nurses!
A. Negative. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
B 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据第一段的“You fly through the air. You land—hard, right on your face! The next moment, you’re in the nurse’s office. Your bleeding nose is being checked by laser sensors (激光传感器) that coming out of a. . robot? Has the nurse’s office been taken over by sci-fi aliens (外星人) from outer space?(你在空中飞翔。你着地,迎面着地!下一秒,你就在护士办公室了。你流血的鼻子正在接受激光传感器的检查。机器人吗?护士办公室是不是被来自外太空的科幻外星人占领了?)”和第二段的“No. You’ve just been pushed forward 15 years into the future. And it’s a future that Susan Epstein, a computer science professor who teaches artificial intelligence, is really excited to think about. “I am crazy about this kind of thing! You could go up to the robot, put your nose in, and the machine would decide whether you needed to be treated, and how.”(不。你被推到了15年后的未来。这是一个让教授人工智能的计算机科学教授Susan Epstein非常兴奋的未来。“我对这种事很着迷!你可以走到机器人面前,把鼻子伸进去,机器就会决定你是否需要治疗,以及如何治疗。”)”可知,第一段引出文章的主题,即未来的机器人护士,故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的““It would work with real, live nurses and doctors,” says Epstein, “there are things humans are good at, like building trust among members of our own species or comforting someone who’s hurt or sick. Officials at Northland Pines School District are working with a tech company called Spooky Action on a program to allow students to use the Internet through drones (无人机).
About 10 percent of Northland Pines students don’t have any Internet access at home, and as many as 40 percent have poor connection speeds which hardly meet the demands of home learning. District leaders have tried for more than ten years to close that gap, but there are no easy solutions. “We’re a district of about 500 square miles and getting Internet connect ion for every family is a challenge,” says Harlan Leusink, the director of technology for the district.
The program will use drones that are connected to a power source on the ground and that can stay in the air for weeks and even months. The drones will serve as flying cell towers. However, the purpose of designing drones had nothing to do with the education but it was related to disasters. “A hurricane comes in and blows down all your cell towers; it’s pretty easy to put up a flying cell tower,” Rahul Tiwari, Spooky Action’s CEO, says. “It’s not necessary to replace a cell tower. The idea is to quickly meet the Internet needs of a community without having to build a million cell towers everywhere.”
While the drones can stay in the air for more than a month, that’s not usually necessary when they provide the Internet for students. Tiwari says the drones will be active during peak (高峰) class and homework times and won’t be flying overnight.
Leusink says his district is looking at the drone service as a proof-of-concept for where and how they need to set up more permanent (永久的) devices (设备). If a drone in a certain area gives students good coverage in that area, he says the next step will be for the district to look for more permanent land-based solutions.
12. What problems does Northland Pines School District have?
A. It has poor Internet access and connection.
B. Internet access at home is impossible there.
C. It has difficulty developing its transport services.
D. Students there pay little attention to online learning.
13. Why were Spooky Action’s drones designed at first?
A. To offer daily supplies after disasters.
B. To replace cell towers in remote areas.
C. To improve the national educational standards.
D. To provide the Internet service during disasters.
14. What can we infer from what Rahul Tiwari says about drones?
A. They have closed the teaching gap.
B. They cannot meet students’ needs.
C. They don’t need to work all the time.
D. They will fly close to local cell towers.
15. What step will be taken for the district?
A. Developing new-type drones.
B. Further testing the drone services.
C. Offering more wireless hotspots.
D. Building permanent equipment properly.
A 13. D 14. C 15. D

根据第二段的“About 10 percent of Northland Pines students don’t have any Internet access at home, and as many as 40 percent have poor connection speeds which hardly meet the demands of home learning. District leaders have tried for more than ten years to close that gap, but there are no easy solutions.(大约10%的Northland Pines学生在家没有任何互联网接入,多达40%的学生网速较差,难以满足家庭学习的需求。十多年来,地区领导人一直试图缩小这一差距,但没有简单的解决办法。)可知,Northland Pines学区的问题是它的互联网接入和连接都很差。故选A。
根据第三段“However, the purpose of designing drones had nothing to do with the education but it was related to disasters. “A hurricane comes in and blows down all your cell towers; it’s pretty easy to put up a flying cell tower, ” Rahul Tiwari, Spooky Action’s CEO,says. “It’s not necessary to replace a Cell tower. The idea is to quickly meet the Internet needs of a community without having to build a million cell towers everywhere.”
根据第四段“Tiwari says the drones will be active during peak (高峰) class and homework times and won’t be flying overnight. (蒂瓦里表示,无人机将在上课高峰和作业时间活跃,不会在夜间飞行。)可知,从拉胡尔·蒂瓦里关于无人机的言论中,我们知道无人机不需要一直工作。故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Leusink says his district is looking at the drone service as a proof-of-concept for where and how they need to set up more permanent (永久的) devices (设备). If a drone in a certain area gives students good coverage in that area, he says the next step will be for the district to look for more permanent land-based solutions. (Leusink表示,他所在的地区正在将无人机服务视为一种概念验证,以确定他们需要在哪里以及如何设置更永久的设备。他说,如果某一地区的无人机能很好地覆盖学生,下一步该地区将寻找更永久的陆地解决方案。)可知,该地区将采取的措施是妥善建造永久性设备。故选D。

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I’m often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I’ve put together some good tips for starting an art journey.
·Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. ___16___ You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
·Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. ___17___
·Continually challenge yourself to try something new. ___18___ Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club;we’ve all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
·___19___ Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path. ___20___ Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A. Get out of your comfort zone.
B. Make career plans and set goals.
C Don’t throw away your beginner art.
D. Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E. You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times.
F. Evaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.
G. You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.
C 17. G 18. A 19. D 20. E

I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. (从小开始。我建议使用一个素描本进行小规模的学习和实践。这些小的学习和实践可以提供灵感,并成为未来更复杂的作品的跳板)”以及后文“You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come. (你会想要回顾一下自己的艺术之旅,看看自己已经取得多少进步)”可知,空处应是一个过渡句,从给出建议使用一个素描本进行小规模的学习和实践,到回顾自己的艺术之旅,所以C项“Don’t throw away your beginner art. (不要扔掉你的初学时的艺术作品)”符合文意,和后文形成顺承关系。故选C项。
【17题详解】
分析设空处,位于段尾,是对本段的总结,根据前文“Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. (经常作画,且从生活中作画。没有什么比不断练习更能提高你的艺术水平了。无论你是绘制静物、肖像还是风景,都要尽可能地从真实生活中去观察和绘制)”可知,本段主要讲述不断练习绘画,所以G项“You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition. (你会逐渐形成只有通过反复练习才能获得的绘画肌肉记忆)”是对前文的总结。故选G项。
【18题详解】
分析设空处,空处位于第二句,此处应是对前一句的进一步解释,并同时引出后文,根据前文“Continually challenge yourself to try something new. (不断挑战自己,尝试新事物)”以及后文“Artistic growth can be a bit painful. (艺术的成长可能会有点痛苦)”可知,A项“Get out of your comfort zone. (走出你的舒适区)”是对前句的进一步说明,和后文构成顺承关系。故选A项。
分析设空处,位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability. (寻求并接受有建设性的反馈对于你的成长非常重要。我在社交媒体上发布我的作品,并因此结识了一些最友好的人。无论我的艺术水平如何,他们都让我感到受到了重视和尊重)”可知,本段主要讲述了是分享自己的作品,所以D项“Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so. (如果你感觉舒适的话,分享你的作品)”符合文意,是本段的中心句。故选D项。
【20题详解】
分析设空处,空处位于第二句,此处应是对前一句的进一步解释,并同时引出后文,根据前文“The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path. (你的旅程不会是一条笔直的道路)”以及后文“Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life. (坚持下去,给它时间,付出努力。你将收获艺术生活的回报)”可知,E项“You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times. (你会遇到障碍,有时你会感到气馁)”是对前句的进一步说明,和后文构成顺承关系。故选E项。

【答案】Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence.
The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations. Fortunately, more and more people have realized these problems. Measures have been taken to cope with these problems by the government. Laws have been passed to stop pollution. I hope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better.
That’s all. Thank you.

The prize may go to the fastest, but sometimes, the first one to cross the finish line isn’t the only winner. Nowhere was that more true than at a recent 5K invitational (邀请赛) in Shelbyville, Indiana.
There were two players in the match: Levi LaGrange and Axel Aleman who hadn’t known each other before. Levi LaGrange, an 18-year-old student from Western Boone High School, has been expecting to be a professional sportsman for many years. Axel Aleman, who is from Sheridan High School, is a friendly and generous person and he is always more concerned about others than himself. Axel once said to his classmates, “When you are standing at a crossroad, you can choose the path of self-interest, or you can go the extra mile for someone in need. As a teen athlete, the choice is extremely clear.”
The game went very well at first. However, with less than half a mile to go, Levi LaGrange slipped, twisting his ankle. He said, “I was running up the little rolling hill and I hurt my ankle. I felt something was wrong with my ankle.”
Levi stopped and signed to Axel to pass him. Generally, winning a match should be the mission for a sportsman, But at that moment, the race became a secondary concern for Axel. “I was able to see he was in a lot of pain,” Axel recalled. “As I got closer to him, he narrowly fell down. I asked if he was all right. He said he felt like something broken in his leg.”
Rather than running ahead, in an extraordinary act of true sportsmen, Axel refused to leave Levi behind. “As soon as I saw him, I knew I had to do something,” Axel said. “It just seemed like the right thing to do. That mattered more than the race. I told him I wasn’t going to leave. I wanted to help him finish the match.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Minutes later, Axel walked closer to Levi.

Axel gained a lot from the incident.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Minutes later, Axel walked closer to Levi. Axel picked Levi up and encouraged him to hold on to the end. Placing an encouraging hand at his competitor’s back, Axel remained with Levi for the remainder of the race. They advanced side by side, with eyes looking at the finish line. They even sang a song to cheer each other up. Eventually, the two crossed the finish line within seconds of one another. Axel even made sure Levi went first. To their surprise, the event organizer announced that they were both winners together.
Axel gained a lot from the incident. In the following days, Axel received lots of positive comments now and then. While he might have enjoyed the praise for his kindness, for him, the best harvest was the friendship with Levi. We might not always recognize when life hands us an opportunity to help others, but when it really does, we should take action. Axel said, “I would just really hope people do the right thing.” Yes, we should do that, not for others, but for ourselves.
⑤ 偶尔、不时:now and then→from time to time/sometimes
【点睛】[高分句型1] Placing an encouraging hand at his competitor’s back, Axel remained with Levi for the remainder of the race.
[高分句型2] While he might have enjoyed the praise for his kindness, for him, the best harvest was the friendship with Levi.

B. Avoid praising the appearance of our children.
C. Teach our kids the significance of inner beauty.
D. Try to listen to our children as much as possible.

B To lead to the topic of the text.
C. To describe an experience of the writer.
D. To give an example to support an argument.

The prize may go to the fastest, but sometimes, the first one to cross the finish line isn’t the only winner. Nowhere was that more true than at a recent 5K invitational (邀请赛) in Shelbyville, Indiana.
There were two players in the match: Levi LaGrange and Axel Aleman, who hadn’t known each other before.
