“HICCUP!” A loud hiccup(打嗝)flew out of my mouth. I just finished my sweet dish when it all began. It was 16 by another one, then another.
My friend Sam turned to look at me with 17 . He thought for a while and then gave advice. “ 18 this, Charlie,” he said. “Block your ears and swallow(吞咽) three times. My grandma says that stops the hiccups.”
I tried it. About 30 seconds passed with no hiccups! But then 19 started up again.
At break I hiccuped while playing basketball. Just as I was getting ready to shoot the ball, Sam came 20 behind me.
“Boo!” he shouted.
I was scared and dropped the ball. “ 21 did you do that?” I asked.
“I’ve heard that a bad 22 will stop the hiccups,” Sam explained. “But you’re still hiccuping, so I guess it didn’t 23 .”
Next, our class visited the school 24 . Sam and I looked at a book of world records.
“ 25 this!” Sam read aloud. “In 1922 a farmer got the hiccups and they lasted 65 years!”
“That’s too bad,” I said 26 between hiccups.
I was getting embarrassed(尴尬的). It was time to go to the nurse.
“Hiccups happen because of a muscle(肌肉) in your chest,” the nurse explained. “It helps you breathe. But 27 it may make you take in air too quickly. That’s a hiccup. The 28 news is that hiccups usually go away on their own.”
“Not these hiccups,” I told the nurse. “They’re going to last for 65 years!”
I stopped talking 29 the nurse could hear the hiccups. A minute passed. No hiccups. My 30 hiccups were finally gone!

If you have ever played in or watched a soccer game, you have seen the referee(裁判)point to players and hold up yellow or red cards. The referee uses these colored cards to show an offense(犯规)by the player. The referee does not have to use language. The color of the card explains the punishment.
This system(制度)is based on the traffic light. The yellow color on a traffic light means caution and the red color means stop. In soccer, a yellow card refers to a warning to a player. A red card means that a player is out. The player must leave the field immediately and may not return to player in the game. But for what reasons are red and yellow cards used in soccer?
This system of using colored cards was created in 1966. During the quarter-finals of the 1966 World Cup, England was playing Argentina. Two players on England’s team had been pointed serious offense by the referee. One of Argentina’s players was sent off the field. However, the referee did not make these calls clear during the game. Some people at the game didn’t even realize what happened until they read reports about the calls in the newspaper later. There was no system in place to announce(宣布) the calls during the match. Often in a match, the officials and the players were the only ones that knew about a call.
In 1966, an English referee thought a better system was needed to make the teams and everyone clearly know about calls as they happened. He also wanted a system that did not use language. Soccer players came from countries around the world. He modeled the red and yellow card system on the traffic light. This system worked so well that other sports also used it.
( )34.The topic of the passage is ________ red and yellow card system is used in soccer.

( )37.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Soccer players need to speak English.

C.A referee from the UK created the system.
D.Most people knew the offense clearly before 1966.

If you are looking to stay cool and comfortable during the hot months, you may be interested in Metaura Pro-a new wearable air conditioner(可穿戴式空调). As the world’s first wearable air conditioner, it can continuously blow cold air to keep you cool.
You can wear Metaura Pro on your neck wherever you go. The wearable air conditioner comes with an app for complete control. For example, in fan mode(模式), it can produce cold air that is 7°F cooler than normal air and in cooling mode, the air it produces can be up to 18°F cooler than normal air.
With a weight of 435g, Metaura Pro is not too heavy to wear, but it can be easily seen by anyone. It has a rechargeable battery and can be charged(充电) quickly. With a fully charged battery, it can run for up to 8 hours.
Metaura Pro is driven by a powerful motor. It has 26 small fans to give cool air and drive away the heat around the user’s neck. With its special cooling system, Metaura Pro can easily change hot air into cold air. “Traditional fans don’t produce cold air in a hot environment. They only circulate(使循环) hot air. The stronger the wind blows, the hotter you get. This is certainly not what you want during those hot summer days. That is why we created Metaura Pro to provide a better portable(便携式) cooling solution,” the product website reads.
The price of Metaura Pro is not very high. People can buy it for $159 now. If you are interested in it, you can follow this website. Maybe in the near future, you can give it a try.

About 50 percent of food in the US is wasted. Wasted food produces gas that will cause global warming, and brings other problems like energy emergency(能源紧张). To reduce food waste, people in the food packaging industry(食品包装行业) are working to develop products for longer shelf life.
Jonathan Deutsch, a professor of food science, says, “All food packaging is designed to explain the contents, protect the quality, and make sure the safety of the product.” When packaging keeps food safe and fresh for a longer time, less waste happens.
Making food last longer is not easy because different food types need different packaging. Fats, for example, change when meeting air and light. That’s why fatty foods, like potato chips, are always kept in packages which light can’t get through. And cookies are afraid of getting wet. Keeping those snacks in a fully closed package will help them stay fresh and tasty longer.
Packaging can extend(延长) shelf life by keeping out gases in the air, like oxygen(氧气). Oxygen causes problems for many different foods. So many food packages are designed to solve the air problem. Vacuum-sealed packaging(真空包装) takes off any oxygen between the food and packaging, which can increase shelf life from a few days to a few weeks. Modified atmosphere packaging(气调包装) is another solution. Unlike vacuum-sealed packaging, which takes off as much air as possible, this packaging replaces the air with a right mixture of gases. Red meat needs some oxygen to keep its colour, but too much oxygen can make it go bad. This kind of packaging can extend shelf life while keeping the product’s colour.
While packaging can help reduce food waste, people also need to consider the environmental influence of the packaging itself. Scientists are working to develop more proper materials. And more people get to know the importance of reducing food waste. “Unlike many of the challenges we face right now on our planet,” said Shukla from Food & Wine magazine, “Food waste is something that every single person can do something about.”
( )42. People work on food packaging to make food__________.
A. produce more energy B. produce less harmful gas
C. be kept fresh for a longer time D. be away from air pollution
( )43. In Paragraph 3, the writer mentioned potato chips and cookies to__________.
A. explain food must be kept without light
B. explain packaging depends on the food type
C. show wasted food is bad for the environment
D. show food goes bad quickly when getting wet
( )44. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Packages are designed to keep oxygen inside.
B. Vacuum-sealed packaging is used to package red meat.
C. The materials of packages are friendly to the environment.
D. Modified atmosphere packaging mixes air properly in packages.
( )45. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

Recently, the Al chatbot(聊天器) ChatGPT has become a hot topic. Many people are deeply attracted by the robot. However, when it comes to education, some people hold different opinions about whether ChatGPT is offering help or making things worse.
In my opinion ChatGPT has helped me in many ways from giving cooking tips to writing emails, but I’ve never tried to use it in my education. It can collect lots of information for us, but we sometimes are not sure whether the information is correct. Also, depending on it to do our homework will just make us stop thinking.
Whether ChatGPT is good or bad for education, I think it all depends on how students use it. If students use it to help them better understand certain topics that teachers may not explain clearly in class, I think it can really help their learning. However, if ChatGPT is simply used for homework or cheating on exams, I think it will do no good.
I think ChatGPT is terrible for education. This is because it’s powerful to allow lazy and hardworking people to achieve the same level of excellence with the same level of education. This makes students who should work hard
become lazy.
