C Wang Zhenyi (王贞仪,1768-1797) was born and grew up in what is now the city of Nanjing, China. At the time, girls were prevented from getting a formal education and were expected to be housewives. However, her father and grandfather encouraged her to read the books in their libraries and educate herself. She was interested in reading works on astronomy (天文) geography, mathematics, medicine, as well as poetry. At 18, she decided to study astronomy and math and write poetry. In the late 18th century, stars and outer space were often viewed as supernatural matters. Many people at the time often looked to the sky for signs of what the future held.
